Joel's death in The Last Of Us Part 2. After I've learned about Joel's impending death from a leaked source online, Naughty Dog quickly reassured upset fans that it was just a rumor and that there was no truth to it. But that wasn't true and Joel did ended up dying by the hands of a gorilla named Abby. 😡

That's like showing a thumbnail of an obviously dead character that's supposed to die in a later season for House of the Dragon.
They should be adding a spoiler warning in the video and not showing it in the thumbnail.

Bioshock is a perfect example of how to do a plot twist that shocks everyone who experiences this landmark of a game.
I know the twist in that one. I was never able to get through the first game. Though I do wonder why the guy wanted to die.
The plot twist doesn't really work in bioshock at all, if the game was instead a side scroller then it would work, but if jack is trigger by the frase and instead of doing what they told me i pass my time looking for little sisters or for the audiophones then your brain control doesn't work at all, the order was would you kindly kill him, not would you kindly kill him but you can do you own things and then do what i told you, don't worry you can took your time, if you want i have time

No other video game characters' deaths have affected me so badly as those of Arthur's and Joel's. The first time I saw it happen I absolutely cried my eyes out. During a single playthrough I'd become so attached to Arthur that when he died it actually hurt so bad. And of course I already had come a long way with Joel.
Clayface's reveal was truly memorable to me when I played Arkham City, it was fantastic and amazing.

Idk if it counts because it happens in the intro of the game but Liu Kang’s death in Deadly Alliance had me shocked as a kid seeing my favorite character killed.
I mean, it's Mortal Kombat. The point of the game is one character kill the other.
@@SuperSylar Liu Kang was the protagonist four the first four games and then he got killed off. Also unlike other deaths in the series he remained dead until the reboot.
Even though it still sucks that they killed off Lee at the end of the first season of TellTale's TWD at least Clementine always remembered what he taught her and therefore he didn't die in vain.
I disagree that it sucked. I look at it more like Lee was given a 2nd chance in the world to do right by someone and in the end he earned his chance and his redemption

Doms death was the saddest moment for me in video games

Finding out that the humble one time encounter with a traveling merchant is actually a fated encounter and this humble merchant is the Grandmaster using everyone as chest pieces..
That mf is the fucking Devil.

The moment in God of War Ragnarok that shocked me was when Sindri revealed that Brok actually died, and only has 3 quarters of his soul restored, which led to some severe consequences.
Joel dying, was shocking and not shocking at the same time to me. I could see it happening. Like it makes sense, that someone out there. Would want revenge, for what he did. But I didn’t think it would actually happen.
It was genuinely hard for me to push through after Dom sacrificed himself. I really felt that one.
Same man I played all the gears games co op with my dad when i was a teenager and he always played Dom. Once Dom was gone my dad didn't wanna play anymore for a while lmao.
Another good one would've been - The part in The Darkness where you get forced to watch as your girlfriend, Jenny, gets her brains blown out, directly in front of you, by the man who adopted you from an orphanage and raised you. Only to betray you in such a heartbreaking way. - That still sticks with me to this day. Grim Beard actually made a great video about it recently which I suggest people go check out if you don't remember the game or still want to give it a try.
damn I have never even heard of that game before and just watched it on youtube, that is awful.

To me most shocking moment was in Bioshock 2 when Elenor harvested all the little sisters. You just watched and there was nothing you could do to stop it. Elenor even mentioned, this is what she learned from me. On that moment, my jaw dropped on the floor. This was like over 10 years ago and still haunts me.
That was awful, Still remember it vividly to this day
KOTOR reveal scene is all the more shocking because we have all the hints dropped before - and presented to us in a new light.
It's amazing what RDR2 did with John Marston. We assumed he always cared about his family more than anything in RDR1, but RDR2 shows what an influence Arthur Morgan was on him. John was completely unrecognizable in RDR2 at first. Abandoning the gang and his family for a year, and not believing Jack was his child for a bit. Arthur made him realize what truly matters which gives John's actions and his ultimate sacrifice more meaning.
I don’t like that he needs to thanks Arthur for everything he has and is in rdr especially when Arthur wasn’t supposed to exist

This isn't going to be on a lot of lists but just the fact that you play the entirety of chapter 6 in Red Dead Redemption 2 as a man diagnosed with turbecolisis and on his way to die. Just Arthur's whole story I found really moving and surprising. Maybe not "shocking" in the traditional sense but idk a single other game that has you play as someone questioning their whole life choices and someone who is rattled with a lot of guilt and shame. I found it all very relatable. What's actually the most shocking thing to me is that Arthur Morgan has become my favorite videogame character ever and I have played a lot of games.

Doms sacrifice I don't care what anyone says this is one of the most emotional moments in video games if you connected deeply with the characters in The Gears of War universe I almost tear up every time I see this I know what it's like losing a brother it's the worst feeling in the world

Every video game has shocking moments that will blow your mind. There are so many that could've made my list, honestly, but these moments really shocked me. Would you kindly? is definitely a powerful phrase that brought the tension rising high as you progress in the game, which is why the twist reveal was so shocking to most people and I kindly agree. It was shocking enough that the first Last of Us game had a unexpecting gut-wrenching opening moment with the death of a child, and the fact that they did it again in the second one is equally shocking, props to them on bringing some shocking moments, it's like it happened in a movie (most video games can't pull off a twisting opening in the game like this one). However, out of all of these shocking moments, it was Metal Gear Solid that took the top for me because the fact Psycho Mantis can read your memory cards, which is very cool (and scary if you were a kid), he can also turn your camera off to make it look like your TV is having some technical difficulties, but the cherry on top was you have to beat him switching your controller from one end to another. I've never played MGS so I wouldn't know about and I originally doubt it, but after I found the truth (seeing other gameplay), It swoon me over immediately. Now that you've seen my top 3 and my description, Would You Kindly Like this Comment? :)
Honestly, both AC II and MGS2’s endings are hands down 2 of the greatest “WTF moments” in ALL of gaming where you had this celestial being break the 4th wall and talk to YOU as the player (well, Desmond) to convey the dire warning…and the other making you question what is actual reality! Then later find out the actual people you thought were behind everything had died over a century ago, and changing the perspective for the entire saga past and future, I mean it truly does not get any better than that!!!
Aerith floating down in the water with the music in the background made me cry while watching this list. So many memories from that game but that whole sequence destroyed me. First time I realized games could be emotionally affecting and truly amazing.
The end of the first Bioshock, when all "little sisters" you rescued, are gathered around you in the moment you die, made me cry.
That White Phosphorus scene is the reason why I didn't finish Spec Ops. No Russian was different but this one made me think about why people go to war and why those who don't want to fight suffer more.

There's a dark theory that Aerith didn't die to Sephiroth's sword, rather he paralysed her and her body went into shock so when she's laid into the water by Cloud, he actually subjected her to a slow drowning death and he was the one to truly kill her.
Eeeer... no. People tend to check for vitals and stuff.
Still gotta give an honorable mention to Destiny 2 for several moments, Perma killing Cayde-6, just how far Savathûn's plan reached and the reveal that almost all of 4 years of Destiny 2 was her machinations and then the twists during The Witch Queen. Probably not the most not important across all of gaming, but watching the Destiny lore community get turned on its head in the last year and a half has been a ride
I stood in line for 8 hours back in 2009 to be the first person to get MW2 at my local gamestop. There was a line around the block. I had so much fun with that game and I'll never forget what it was like the moment Sheppard betrayed us. Seeing a younger generation experience that love for those characters and having them ripped away gives me a sense of happiness. Fulfillment
Bass's Betrayal on Megaman 7 rented it back in 1996 In Pokemon Coloseium turns out The Mayor of Phenac City was the real mastermind behind Cipher.
I never thought Sheperd's death at the beginning of ME2 was all that shocking considering it is undone literally seconds later.
Sora disappearing/dying in kingdom hearts 3, Raiden changing the timeline in mortal Kombat 9, ghetisis turning on n, finding out shadow was artificially created
As someone that played Final Fantasy VII not knowing of Aerith's demise in advance, that one hit hard. The others, I did know.
Joel's death was one of the many things that got leaked for The Last of Us 2. His death was already expected when the game came out, so it wasn't shocking at all.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, my all-time favorite video game. I said, "the reveal that you are Revan better be in this list" and holy crap it's #2

Seeing Joel died in The Last of Us 2 was as devastating as seeing Optimus Prime died in the Transformers animated movie in the 80s.
I’ve played the game, but damn. Unsubbing after that thumbnail. Not worth the risk in future if they’re going to exploit the algorithm to ruin an experience for the maximum number of people possible.
It’s a crime that God of War Ragnarok Tyr reveal isn’t on here. No one saw it coming and it killed off a beloved character
Joel’s death followed by being forced to take control of the person who killed him right after without knowing her backstory kept me from finishing the game for almost 2years. I could not handle that 😢
Last of us part 2 is a fantastic game why do people keep hating on that game so what if joel dies Abby did what she thought was right after what joel did, joel was the villain of that game.

@@natechalmers So did I . Mostly because this character showed as a villain for murdering Joel has became latter a better person after saving that former Seraphite transgender boy named Lev . Maybe people are complaining about the fact that the story was only about revenge and the consequences that goes with it, especially the fact that Ellie lost everything at the end just as Abby lost all her friends except Lev.

Y'all should change the thumbnail. There has been a huge influx of new TLoU fans since the tv series started, many of whom are now playing the game for the first time, and that thumbnail could ruin the experience for a lot of people without them even clicking on the video.
I'll be honest I'm suprised Sigurd from Fire Emblem Genology of The Holy War isn't on this list due to the fact how he was the protagonist of the first part of the game before he was killed and then his son Seliph took over. Since back then I figured something like that was shocking for players at the time.
Abby killing Joel in The Last of Us part 2 was the most shocking for me of all the shocking moments in video games that one would actually be my number one
In 1997 12-year-old me had no idea how to process the death of the person I shipped with the main protagonist.
I definitely played the rest of the game with the idea that I'd be able to get her back somehow, so when we prepared for the final battle and gave tribute to the dead character I really felt the profoundness of it.

I think Harry Osborn from Marvel's Spider-man PS4 video-game should have a spot on this list because how unexpectedly surprising memory-blowing he is still alive, recovery healing, and well. That's the Most uniquely remarkable surprising moment.

Joel death in the last of us 2 still on my mind
Red dead redemption 2 when you continue on playing as John Marston after Arthur Morgan dies.
While playing as Jackson in the first Modern Warfare, witnessing the nuclear explosion and ensuing death of the character I was playing was a huge shock.
The opening the ME2 was super jarring but holy mother of God wad ME3 on another level. I loved the universe so the way everyone was dealing with the Reaper threat absolutely broke me😭😭
RDR2, killing my fucking horse then Arthur had me going "NO!"
I will never get over Dom. I’ve replayed 1-2 a couple times. I can’t bring myself to go back to 3.
While shocking moment is that there is a hospital bed in the Oscorp building penthouse and Harry Osborn never even travel to Europe.
Arieths death got spoiled for me. I never played FF7 and never even completed 50% of the game after I bought it for the switch. But I knew it happened years before I bought the game!
Joel’s death hits hard ‘cause literally everyone knows he got killed off for no damn reason. It sucks knowing it did not have to be written that way. Trash of Us 2, most garbo story of all time.
One moment that caught me by surprise was in "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2" when Raziel found out that the soul-devouring entity that inhabited the Reaver sword was, and had always been, himself. And this was just after finding out that he was the one that killed his past self, not that he minded doing that; the human Raziel was a dick.
When Joel died, I cried so hard...
I grew attached to Joel and Ellie's daughter father relationship. It reminded me of how much I missed my dad when I moved out of my parent's home.
Then my dad died in Nov 2020, the same year the 2nd game came out...
When I got the game a month after my dad died and saw Joel pass and how hurt Ellie was, it broke me, and made me realize that my dad was gone.
I stopped playing the game after that. I might go back to it, but that scene hurt my heart so much man.
I had to stop playing tlou2 for the night (midnight release) because I was devastated and needed to grieve for joel.

I love gears of War 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for the campaign. They were all emotional and I'm excited for a gears of War 6 for the campaign
The most shocking moment in a game for me is Sully’s death being a hallucination in Uncharted 3. I seriously believed he was dead for good before I got the game.

Dom's death in Gears 3 hit me like a freight train. Heartbreaking. I'll never forget it. For me Dom's death is number 1 and it's really not close. Joel's death in The Last of Us is probably the closest in 2nd

Dr. Exavolt being evil in Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is my absolute #1 shocking moment. Would have killlllled for a sequel to that game
When Joel died I wanted to break my controller
Samus is the best woman in gaming. She has confidence for days, is intelligent enough to argue with and beat a super computer, is capable of wrestling down gigantic beasts with her bare hands, has a kickass suit of armor and an equally awesome arsenal, has an incredible backstory regarding her origins, survives being infected by a deadly parasite, has a toned body that can handle any athletic feat that stands in her way, and so much more. The icing on the cake is that in almost every game where we see her face, she's attractive as hell. Her creators even made a welcomed mistake when trying to reduce her sexiness by giving her a skintight bodysuit instead of a realistic athletic outfit. Her only flaws are that she has recurring trauma from Ridley in modern games (He's practically a gag at this point), she loses her powers in almost every game through hilariously silly reasons, and she has a very inconsistent design in 3D games under the helmet. Minor flaws aside, she absolutely has an arsenal of excellent traits that makes her an incredible character. In her various manga adaptations and backstories, she's always started off as a rash and reckless girl who has the power to back up her bark, but rather than continue to be an immature wild child, she grows in every aspect to become a respectable woman.
Samus is the best.
For me, the most shocking moment was Joel's death in The Last of Us 2.

My wife is not a gamer, but she loves watching me play games with great stories. She thoroughly enjoyed the likes of Red Dead 2, breath of the wild, Hollow Knight, Sekiro. . . The last of us... and the last of us 2. That scene in the last of us 2 broke her. She fell in love with Joel's character while watching me play the first game and upon seeing that scene she cried harder than almost any other time, aside from Glenn's death on the walking dead.
I have a love hate with TLOU2. Because it was an amazing game.. . . But my wife doesn't watch me play games anymore since that scene.
GTA 5 torture segment is the most overblown moment in gaming. It's a videogame and we do worse all the time in other game. Pearl clutchers act like every time you press "X" to fake-torture, a real kitten gets drowned somewhere in the world. How oh how have I gotten on with my life without therapy after that? Probably because it was the 37th most memorable thing in the game.
