I ride slow technical rocky rooty stuff in Hawaii. Looking for options for my aer 48. Recently came across your diy kit. Would this help? Or am I better off with a spring conversion?
Hello and thanks the comment. The stock AER48 Valving / hydraulics is the weak point of the fork which results in its less then good performance. To not address the valving and only modify the spring component of the forks from a pneumatic spring to a coil spring would be a lateral sideways move. The JBI Suspension WP AER48 Pro Fork DIY Kit addresses and resolves the shortcomings of the stock AER48 valving setup. Which results in a better feeling / performing fork.
I'm happy to offer an unsolicited testimonial to JB's excellent "J-Kit". 🙂 I ride very-novice vet MX, found and followed JB's videos for a while, talked to him on the phone, called a friend to tell him I was about to order, he told me was just installing his. Before I ordered, we then compared back to back with my stock bike to his. Despite my buddy having 40 lbs on me, the different was immediately noticeable, the first third of travel is way more plush - more slippery feeling, but the last third has much better hold-up, allowing you to drop the air pressure, helping again with the plushness. We really noticed the difference on small chatter, the square edge breaking bumps that form in hot and dry California (like Hangtown). I then paid the favor forward, lent my forks to another buddy for a race weekend, he then ordered the same kit. For sake of data points, we had maybe a 60lb spread in our weights, with the lightest of us (second buddy) being the fastest. The main difference in settings - per JB, was the rider-weight sensitive rebound stack. For a counter-point, I also tried other friends' bikes done by local tuners, and to get the hold-up, the forks were so hash on the small stuff that I found them to be unrideable. JB really threaded the needle on this, in a perfect world, WP would license his kit to put it on their stock bikes. I have been having to (and am still) re-learning how to ride a bit, as I had been compensating for fear of bottoming. This setup has saved my bacon multiple times already though, coming up short tripling into rollers, expecting to hear a "clang" and go over the bars, but having the fork absorb to about 8mm of bottoming. That one incident paid for the kit right there. The only issue with these, is that you will then notice that the weak link moves to the shock - but JB can dial you in there too! Keep up the good work, JB!
Hello. The JBI Suspension WP AER48 Pro Fork DIY Kit tuned to the “Flowly Singke Track Spec” or “Technical Single Track Spec” depending on the terrain is recommended. If looking to change to a spring option JBI offers both WP and KYB kits.
