Mussorgsky is my jam! I loved Night on bald mountain since I was a kid.
The opening to the suite gave me Hammer horror vibes. I had visions of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee strutting through a haunted mansion like absolute bosses. The rest of it was... surreal and strange. Beautiful and thought provoking. It made me think about not just the prog bands of the same era, but how much influence they've had on more modern prog sounds as well, despite being so obscure.

So awesome Brandon, thanks for honoring my request and in the most excellent and positive way as you always do! 🥳 I know this was a lot to take in on first listening, so kudos to you and everyone who gave it a shot. 🤗I've been listening to these two songs since the mid 70's so they are like part of my DNA now! 😅 I'd say that these two songs are the best of their best, IMHO, with side 1 being pretty darn good but for what ever reason doesn't pull me back in nearly as often as side 2.
Their second album titled "Two, Too" . . . . and it's a rare moment when I try to listen to it! There are a couple songs I like, in particular "Carrollon" which is a pretty amazing short high energy piece with surprising complexity (and maybe some vocals recorded at half speed then sped up?) and well worth many listens but most of the rest . . . I really don't know what they were thinking (or drinking?) it was such a drastic change, it's like they all joined a cult together, or left the prog rock cult they were previously in? 🤷‍♂😅 As one reviewer said:
"They changed their symphonic prog approach to a more mainstream , I don't know how to call it, Hollywoodian cabaret, if exist such thing"
And the original album cover . . . I'm sure they were all probably in tears one night laughing over the idea of a sort of Monty Python gag with the whole band being dressed in ballet tutus and leaping into the air in ecstasy 😂 but . . .the music for the most part sounded far too close to the way the album cover looks so it was quite a shock for fans of the first album! 😧 They still display excellent musicianship and there are many excellent and impressive moment through out but as a whole, it just fell flat due to the drastic change in writing style and maybe production quality? Not to be overly critical, I just don't want people who fall on love with "Atmospheres" & "Night On Bald Mountain" to excitedly buy the Two, Too album and be "tutu" disappointed! 😉

You're very welcome my friend and thanks for introducing me to this amazing band and amazing 2 pieces! We should get more early AM viewers after midnight...this video is already doing better than 3 of my most recent! (TH-cam gives me a realtime ranking of my latest 10 vids as you probably know). Thanks for your honest thoughts on album 2. I wonder what I would think. And I still have to learn why they broke up so soon. I think I saw that Ryche went on to play with Nektar and Renaissance! I'm sure the others continued musically as well. I will play a bit from their top rated song on album 2... brb............Carrollon.....OK, just heard parts of it...more HUGE rapid fire energy there!....I'm still hearing lots of Yes and ELP in that one. The vocals are amazing! So I definitely would listen to and likely enjoy the whole song 😁 Thanks again my friend for a great 1st Patreon suggestion!!!

Atmospheres: Early Genesis vibes, the lead singer sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel too.
A Night On Bald Mountain: Genesis vibes again, with some Van Der Graff Generator thrown in. Mercy!
Kicking myself for not knowing about this artist until now
BTW, a disco version of " Night On Bald Mountain " is on the " Saturday Night Fever " soundtrack(much shorter in length), by David Shire

Not a bad way to spend the night...with Side 2 of this EPIC album, huh? Pretty sad that they only lasted for 2 albums...what else could they have created? Oh yes, that sounds familiar...95% chance I've heard that disco version, but will give it another listen now to make sure. It will go well with all the fireworks that are going off right now 😊 Thanks for being first tonight my friend... 🥇

Have you ever heard of Isao Tomita? He did classical music on very early synthesizers in the 1970s. His version of "The Planets" is stunning!

    • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, Tomita's interpretation is brilliant. 👌Also Patrick Gleeson did an electronic version called "Beyond the Sun: An Electronic Portrait of Holst's The Planets" and I love that one also but it's very different being more of a direct reproduction of the score, while Tomita's is a more freely artistic interpretation? Both great!

      Sure, Isao Tomita
RIP, were among early Synthesizer (particularly a growing Moog modular over the years ) a true pioneer, I heard particularly "Pictures of an exhibition" by Moussorgsky when I had the Vinyl 😎
He also released his own version to that Debussy prelude " the Engulfed Cathedral" on his early album, Snowflakes are dancing around 1973 I think. What a sound exploration it was. Recommended in the early 70's instrumentals experiences

Awesome! First song were very Genesis "Trespass" acoustic oriented, second long one had everything in a tale from prog to instrumental and cinematic. I heard Moussorgsky and then Debussy prelude "the Engulfed Cathedral", and some original parts (a bit of child in time Deep purple), Mike oldfield, is it a grandiose pastiche ? Very captivating, this should be listened several times. Great discovery!

'Atmospheres' was more Genesis than Genesis but very muted vocals. The other one was impressive too, but a little chaotic for me.... I'll have another listen.

  • @ericjourdain892
    @ericjourdain892 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I really like the first song, it's so mellow and well, atmospheric.
The voice mix sounds like low-fi 2010.
    Thank you Brandon!
    Now for Mussorgsky:
The opening sounds like a slapstick Broadway version of Phantom Of The Paradise to me, and VERY pretentious as a "suite".
Could be in its best moments a very good soundtrack for a giallo, and I thank John for such a sonic experience, I could picture a couple of bloody murders while listening.
The term "suite" is employed for soundtracks when they mash up all themes of a movie together, and that's exactly how this makes me feel like.
    Very interesting journey!

Extra Credit! 😁 For those interested, here are some links to some information and some of the source music that inspired Fireballet's "Night On Bald Mountain". There are many interpretations that vary widely so if you don't care for the ones I list give a couple other's a try? I personally find it fascinating and fun to listen both the original piano compositions and later fully orchestrated versions, and then come back and listen to Fireballet's interpretation! 💖🤓💖
    Mussorgsky / Rimsky-Korsakov:
    From this Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_on_Bald_Mountain
""Night on Bald Mountain", also known as "Night on the Bare Mountain", is a series of compositions by Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881). Inspired by Russian literary works and legend, Mussorgsky composed a musical picture called "St. John's Eve on Bald Mountain" on the theme of a Witches' Sabbath occurring at Bald Mountain on St. John's Eve, which he completed on that very night, 23 June 1867. Together with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko (1867), it is one of the first tone poems by a Russian composer.
"Although Mussorgsky was proud of his youthful effort, his mentor, Mily Balakirev, refused to perform it and Night on Bald Mountain was never performed in any form during Mussorgsky's lifetime. In 1886, five years after Mussorgsky's death, Rimsky-Korsakov published an arrangement of the work, described as a "fantasy for orchestra." Some musical scholars consider this version to be an original composition of Rimsky-Korsakov, albeit one based on Mussorgsky's last version of the music"
"It obtained perhaps its greatest exposure through the Walt Disney animated film Fantasia (1940), featuring an arrangement by Leopold Stokowski, based on Rimsky-Korsakov's version.
At the climax of the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, an arrangement of the piece is heard, while the Wicked Witch of the West pursues Dorothy Gale and her friends.
David Shire arranged an orchestral disco adaptation, "Night on Disco Mountain", for the 1977 motion picture Saturday Night Fever.
The German progressive thrash metal band Mekong Delta features a cover of the piece on their fourth studio album, Dances of Death (and Other Walking Shadows).[26]
The second main level of Earthworm Jim ("What the Heck?") opens with this theme.[27]
The Nintendo game Donkey Kong Country 2 has a version of the song called “Haunted Chase” in the level “Haunted Hall”.
Yoko Shimomura arranged a version of the piece for the international release of the 2002 video game Kingdom Hearts.
A section of the piece is found in the 2014 video game Skylanders: Trap Team during the final boss fight with the villain Kaos.
A version of the piece was arranged for the game The End Is Nigh titled Golgotha - Night On Bald Mountain (Mussorgsky 1867) by video game composer team Ridiculon
The Russian dancer and choreographer Igor Moiseyev also created a piece from variations of the same theme.[32]
The piece appears in the 2022 film Babylon.
The piece from Fantasia once again returns in the 2023 short Once Upon a Studio."

    Debussy :
    From this Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_cath%C3%A9drale_engloutie
""La cathédrale engloutie" (The Sunken Cathedral) is a musical composition by the French composer Claude Debussy for solo piano, published in 1910. It is the tenth piece in Debussy's first book of préludes. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content."
"This piece is based on an ancient Breton myth in which a cathedral, submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, rises up from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent. Sounds can be heard of priests chanting, bells chiming, and the organ playing, from across the sea.[2] Accordingly, Debussy uses certain harmonies to allude to the plot of the legend, in the style of musical symbolism."
"Various arrangements and transcriptions of the piece exist. A transcription for solo organ was made by Léon Roques and Jean-Baptiste Robin in 2011 (recording Brilliant Classics 94233). It was arranged for orchestra by Leopold Stokowski as "The Engulfed Cathedral" and released in a recording in 1930. It appears in a cover version on the album Grand Guignol by John Zorn's band Naked City. Sections of Debussy's piece are also used in the introduction and final of Renaissance's song At the Harbour, from their 1973 album Ashes Are Burning. Isao Tomita arranged the piece for electronic synthesizer as part of his Snowflakes Are Dancing recording of 1973-1974. John Carpenter used it as sound track in his 1981 science fiction movie Escape from New York. The composer Henri Büsser made a transcription for orchestra of this piece in 1921, while composer Colin Matthews arranged it for the Hallé Orchestra in 2007."
