Someone asked Eddie Van Halen” what’s it like to be the greatest guitar player in the world?” Eddie said” I don’t know, ask Roy Clark”
I'm convinced no one ever said that phrase... LOL. I have heard it from multiple artists about multiple other artists...so I have my doubts!
Truth!!!
I have heard that to in it is true so the one's who don't believe are just jealous.
@@Fizzledark oh hold the fort: Snopes has spoken 😂
Yep I remember that
A man. A guitar. No speakers. No synthesizers. No electronic “magic”. PURE. MUSICAL. TALENT. Roy Clark was AMAZING.
He was THE master of all stringed instruments.....R.I.P. Roy Clark
If it had strings, he could play it. He may not have been the best in the world at every instrument, but he was great on all of them. And on guitar, he may have been the best. At any rate, it would be a close run thing between him and Chet.
Jerry Reed was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. A lot of the greats would emulate his playing, because he WAS so good.
@@SpookyFreeHalloween As was Merle Travis. Chet emulated Mertle.
Les Paul...another
And don't forget about Terry Kath.
A picker. A comedian. A singer. An American icon!
Roy Clark is one of the world's greatest musicians. Primarily played country music. He can play just about any string instrument on an expert level
He was a master on the banjo also
@@vonsanson3120 And the fiddle...
I saw on the old TV show He-Hall he also played the bagpipes.
@@larrylucas1079Hee Haw
This man it is the most amazing man that ever played strings. He is also the biggest goof ball and loved to make everyone laugh.
you just witnessed on of the greatest if not the greatest guitar players ever. he can play every stringed instrument
Yeah, watch him on a fiddle, a banjo, and, apparently because of his little bit of stage fright, he threw in all his silliness and humor, which was just terrific! I’d throw Glen Campbell in there as another guitar master! His voice sold him commercially, but from his time on the wrecking crew All the way through, He was a beast!
They're called stranged instruments where Roy is from
Facts!!!!
if it had strings, that man could play it. And play it well
Watch some old episodes of HeeHaw and experience the magic of Roy Clark
One of the most under rated guitar players ever, EXCEPT amomg other guitarist.
Man, he was never “ under rated “ but yes he was a guitarist for guitarist
He was never considered unrated.
Real guitarists know that Roy Clark is always part of the conversation. He just may be the GOAT!
And he could play Banjo just as good
Roy Clark and Glen Campbell, two of the greatest
Alice Cooper tells a story about how he owed Eddie Van Halen a favor and Eddie asked Alice, who was close friends with Glen Campbell, if Alice could arrange a GUITAR LESSON for him with Glen. Think about that. Eddie asking for a guitar lesson with Glen Campbell.
Fun fact: Alice Cooper is Dave Mustaine's Godfather.
Glen Campbell and Roy Clark doing Ghost Riders in the Sky is one of the best
If you look at most of the people on the list, when they wanted help, they went to Campbell or Clark. Glen Campbell doing The William Tell Overture is mind blowing. Of course, Roy Clark could play pretty much anything with strings.
@@wegotlumpsofitroundtheback5065 Glen had a huge talent for chord progressions, and arrangment.
He was very mechanically knowledgeable about the guitar from a young age.
When his alzheimers had taken everything,he still played, not remebering his licks.
But staying on point like a pro.
I hadnt heard of this, but im not surprised.
No tricks. No effects. Just talent.
And taught by his father to play ❤
Another Fun Fact. Not only was he a talent in the music world.
He was also Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles MLB. He said he was pretty sure he would have made the Big leagues. However, there was way more money in music in the 1960's, than in Baseball.
So he chose Music!
If Mr. Clark had decided to play rock music he'd be talked about in the same vein as Hendrix, Clapton, Stevie Ray, etc. The man was beyond phenomenal as a musician.
Roy Clark was in a class all his own.
He can play classical, flamenco, finger picking, he even throws in percussive techniques. This particular song is flamenco. He is definitely up on the list of greats! RIP RC! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Throw a violin or banjo at him, he'd blow your mind there, too.
Malagueña is a famous Classical Spanish composition renowned for it being one of the most difficult songs. If you can even play this, you're a certified bad ass. Roy is an incredible performer and is just as good on the banjo, the mandolin, and the violin and is a good comedian, to boot.
HEE HAW!!! Not a country fan but those shows were fun!
I thought it was originally from Cuba?
Malagueña is a classic folk dance from Malaga, Spain. The amazing part where the audience clapped is meant to correspond to the footwork of the female dancers (the Malagueñas, or ladies of Malaga).
As a little girl I had no idea how talented he was. He was just a favorite character on Hee Haw!! He is just wonderful. My Daddy use to tell me “Lucretia, he is a great guitarist”.
I had the amazing privilege of hearing Roy Clark play a concert that included Malaguena in the late 1980s. Astonishing to watch
The best live show I ever attended was a Roy Clark show in Branson. To watch him play Malaguena in person is something you will remember for the rest of your life. No doubt, I have seen the best guitar player in the world.
Wow and he was still playing that song and playing that well in the late 80s 🏆
I'm an old English guitarist and I can't tell you a damn thing about 'best'. I will tell you that Roy was admired, influential, respected and loved. And that is more than enough.
Every great guitar player from every genre knows who Roy Clark is.
Roy Clark was absolutely brilliant playing anything with strings! He was the CMA instrumentalist of the year more than once.
This is pure guitar. An artist. The canvas. No filter. Nothing. Just talent
My mother gave me tickets to see Roy Clark. I was not thrilled because I remembered Roy Clark from Hee Haw and thought he was corny country. It was one of the best performances I have been blessed to see. He was so talented and very funny. He was also so kind to his audience.
Mother knows best!
I'm so jealous! What an experience!
You couldn't meet a nicer down the earth man that Roy Clark. My dad and Roy fished together several times over the years and Roy was just salt of the earth.
When I was young, I got to usher at one of his concerts. I'm not a big country fan, but I enjoyed every minute of it.
Thank you for sharing your story. How nice.
Miss him!
I grew up near Branson (back when that actually kind of meant something) Roy was like a king. Everybody knew him, loved him had pictures with him had stories of meeting him in a restaurant and he'd pick up your check. Just all kinds of lovely stories. Andy Williams was another that was pure class that spent a lot of time in Branson.
You are spot on....he IS just what you see....love my cuz and when people tell these stories..RIP
Roy Clark was a strings master. Guitars, banjos, mandolins… nearly everything with strings. A country boy to boot.
He was also drafted by the Baltimore Orioles.
He said he was pretty sure he would have played MLB. He said he could make a lot more money in music in the 1960's
One of Roy Clark's greatest joys in life was playing music. He played something like 27 instruments but was best known for his guitar work.
the tv show was The Odd Couple and as you might have noticed, it was filmed in front of a live studio audience. one take. it was his masterpiece to play that showed off his real skill.
Even the camera's at that time couldn't keep up with his strumming He was so fast it was a blur. Lol
Roy was an absolute genius with any stringed instrument. He could play anything and was equally adept at serious music or comedy. I have to suggest his songs of "Thank God and Greyhound" or "Dueling banjos". "Yesterday when I was young" will tug at the heart strings and make you think.
Yes! Thank God and Grayhound is amazing!
This particular song has been around a long time. The title is Malaguena I believe. This is the short version. There is a live version of the full song.
@tombarr561 Yes! "Dueling Banjos", is one of my favorites!
Yesterday When I was Young--makes my heart ache every time.
Dueling Banjos is a classic example of call & response on guitars and its performance at its finest and greatest!!Fun and catchy, and very entertaining... I second checking that one out as well.😄✌
In the 70's I really wanted a guitar and dad kept saying no. Finally he thought he would shut me down and said he would buy me a guitar when I could play Malaguena. He loved Roy Clark and was sure I would never be able to figure it out cause you know.... just a girl and all. I borrowed a guitar from the school band teacher and worked tirelessly for weeks on end but I figured out a simplified version, played it for my dad and got my first guitar! I never came close to playing like Mr. Clark, but I always loved listening and watching him play!
No tricks, no games, just great talent. The man was just super.
Roy Clark and Chet Atkins have long been known as two of the best guitarists of all time, long before our modern-day great rock guitarist. He is a country singer who can do classical guitar too.
My husband's best friends father in Law, Mr Goens, made several guitars for Chet and probably Roy to. He was a master Luther. Nice man. I just can't remember his first name.
Roy, Jerry and Chet. None better to ever do it
Roy Clark should definitely be on anyone’s top 10 guitarists list. What he’s doing is so difficult. He’s playing classical Spanish/flamenco style on a regular acoustic guitar with percussive tapping, harmonics, finger-picking. It’s just pure unadulterated talent; no frills or gimmicks, simply skill. So glad u reacted to this. xx
indeed.
The man took an acoustic guitar & just played it like a strumming, musical, God. Roy Clark was one of the greats who inspired many future guitarists.
It’s always a privilege to watch a genius like Roy Clark perform!
Roy Clark was tops with multiple stringed instruments.
He is on The Rolling Stones list of 250 greatest guitarists of all time. Check the list you be surprised of the order they are in
Yeah the fact that Roy isn't #1 tells me the list is bullshit
The list is a totally politically correct list. Several greats were left off the list Gatemouth Brown, uncle Ted and several other greats that Rolling Stone didn't like personally
Roy Clark can play anything with strings.
I *LOVE* to watch folks react to this! Your face showed just how incredible Roy Clark is. A lot of people think he was just a guy on Hee Haw (tv show) who played with Buck Owens and wore overalls. Roy Clark is one of the greats and sorely missed!
Roy Clark won lots of awards in his day. Clark was only fifteen when he won National Banjo Championships, which led to his guest appearance at Grand Ole Opry two years later. He really was a professional classical musician who loved country music. PS, he's a wonderful singer too. He sang, Yesterday When I Was Young. Love that song.

Thanks for sharing Mr. Clark's resume. ❤
And the list goes on...
You just witnessed the birth of the guitar tap/slap ! It was to make the sound of a Famenico dancers feet! Roy Clark is a guitar god! PLEASE check out his cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues"! He creates sound effects of the train tracks, gun shots and it is a very funny performance! He get's silly! Also, Dueling Banjos with Buck Trent and "Orange Blossom Special" with Jimmy Henley
! RC mastered any instrument with strings! Rest In Paradise Mr Clark! 🤠
Roy Clark is a classically trained violinist and guitarist who also plays the banjo and mandolin.
Classically trained by his dad and semi professional
There wasn't a musical instrument made that Roy Clark couldn't play ! To do this acoustically is next level !
Next dive in the rabbit hole should be ""Orange Blossom Special" - Roy Clark & Jimmy Henley" to see how versitle he is
Oh yes please !
Roy Clark is the GOAT! If the guitar had strings, he could play it. Listen to more of Roy. It will be one rabbit hole you'll be glad you went down.
Shock and awe, right? He is amazing. One of the best of all time.
Roy.........is 1 of the Greatest Banjo & Guitar Players to EVER Live.
We had to watch Hee Haw when we were kids, Lawrence Welk and Star Trek. Family time 😉
Same here. It was a tradition in Georgia. I forgot about HeeHaw
The Hee Haw Hunnies…
Add carol burnett after
We had to watch what the folks were watching. Only 1 t.v.
Roy Clark is an absolute legend. Loved him on Hee-Haw.
Roy could play anything with strings.

That's for sure. Kudos to the young folks for giving these truly great artists a listen.
Malagueña" (Spanish pronunciation: [malaˈɣeɲa], from Málaga) is a song by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. It was originally the sixth movement of Lecuona's Suite Andalucía (1933), to which he added lyrics in Spanish.
We are watching Roy play 4 different guitars and drums without switching instruments.
Roy is legendary! I'm 66 and I remember you could always find the Roy Clark guitar books at any music store in the early 70's and probably earlier.
Determining the GOAT when it comes to guitar is totally subjective. Everyone has our favorites, and Eddie, Stevie, Jimmy, Mark Knoffler, many others get mentioned alot. But there is no mistaking Roy Clark is also incredibly talented and would be hard to argue he deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest!
Not to mention ( I suppose some would say this is being picky ) that all time goes back to the Baroque period;
Really picky is : even today most guitarists ( all around the world) aren't recorded - some, at least, because they don't want to be
This song was written in 1933 and is a great example of classical Spanish guitar. Being played by one of the 20th century masters of the guitar only makes it better.
Malagueñas is one of the traditional styles of Andalusian music (flamenco) from Málaga in Spain. Roy IS the MASTER of stringed instruments!
The best concert I ever saw Roy Clark at the Calgary Stampede 1977. We left speechless.
Not only was Roy the best guitar player ever he was an awesome person.
I actually watched this episode of the Odd Couple when it first aired. Legend.
I wonder if we did. I would have been awfully young and don't remember, and my parents are both gone now so I can't ask them if they remember. I have been hoping that someone who was in that studio audience will pop up in one of these comments sections and describe that amazing experience. Every time someone reacting to this pops up in my feed I'm all in.
If it had strings, this man could play it at a different level. His banjo playing was phenomenal.
Roy Clark was the best! He was a Master Musician. The true GOAT !
The old school country/bluegrass guys are on another level of guitarists!! Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Jim Stafford, Jerry Reed!!!! If it's got strings, Roy can play it on an Elite level!! Guitar, banjo, fiddle!!!
Don't forget Chet Atkins!
Caterina Valente - Malagueña (1955) th-cam.com/video/SLMbmecCFlg/w-d-xo.html is the famous one. Malagueña meaning "from Málaga", a city in Southern Spain.
The lady who sings and dances, Caterina Valente, Italian-German-French, is arguably the Worlds first super star, with a singing career in half a dozen languages and on all continents. She promoted/exported the Brazilian Bossa Nova to North America, Europe and Asia.
Malagueña is a Spanish folk dance. Spanish guitar, flamenco guitar, that's right. And you're right, playing this is meant to be serious business. You are allowed to clap, if you do it in time, and crying or shouting ¡Olé! is on point, too.
A guitar plays, everyone else dances.
Thanks for the history. Great info.
Roy Clark can play anything with strings. I love his bango playing.
Roy Clark is a legend playing the guitar.
People from Spain, go..."oh ya, thats a master right there" . When Roy does the "slap" thing, its at a point when the dancers stomp their feet to the same rythm. Absolutely stunning!!!
You don't have to know anything about guitar to realize you just watched a master at his craft! One of the 🐐 s
Roy Clark was an outstanding musician and entertainer. He could play any stringed instrument with excellence and also had a fabulous sense of humor.
Now you should hear Roy doing Dueling Banjos with Buck Trent on Hee Haw! You will absolutely love it!
You need to keep in reference that at the time of this recording, Roy Clark was almost unknown outside the world of Country/Western music. He was a "HeeHaw" regular [look that one up!] and although anyone who watched him there saw his guitar prowess, most of the rest had no idea who he was or what he could do.
Brother's hand is a blur. Mad respect!
I’m 67 yrs old and I’ve pretty much always listened to classic rock. But I grew up watching Hee-Haw on TV. And after listening to Roy Clark for many years, I truly Do believe that he is the best ever. And I’m also proud to say that he was a fellow Virginian from FarmVille. R.I.P. Roy.
Roy Clark was a BEAST. And that performance, wow. Could you imagine going to a taping of a sitcom and getting treated to THAT?!
I was thinking about suggesting this video! Roy was very talented, played multiple instruments, sang, acted and very funny. I believe there are also some videos out there with Roy and Johnny Cash playing together.
That is Flamenco . He does an excellent job playing this song. Roy Clark was under appreciated for his talent.
When I was 13 I asked my parents to take me to see him in concert and they did. He was just as amazing on banjo and fiddle. I’m 61 now and still haven’t seen anyone like Roy Clark
Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, and Lindsay Buckingham. Masters of the 12 string acoustic guitar. One of the hardest and most beautiful sounding guitars out there. All have great sets out there on TH-cam.
Imagine growing up in this era.........where music changed, inspired, intensed, delighted, and all the other words out there.........
Roy had a hit in the 60’s with singing “Yesterday, When I Was Young.”
*_Thank God & Greyhound You're Gone_*
I been watching Roy Clark for decades, he was on hee haw, yes he is amazing. Loved your reaction
Sadly he left the world in 2018. I first heard him as a child in the 70's on a TV show called Hee Haw. My dad is 89 and still plays his music in his band.
A music virtuoso. Give him any instrument and he could play it. Same with Barbara Mandrell. She's worth checking out. The style is flamenco. Wait til you see him on the banjo
OMG... I had forgotten about her!!! thank you
Roy Clark was an amazing guitar, banjo and other string instrument player. Malaguena is a classical piece.
The man was oozing with talent! Love him, RIP Roy Clark. Love your reactions, thanks for sharing.
Roy Clark can make a guitar sound like a train coming down the tracks! I kid you not the man is the best!❤
Roy Clark is an underrated guitar player in this year of 2024. I'm 55 and remember watching the Odd Couple and especially Hee Haw. The man was amazing !!!!!!!!!
Im so glad you stumbled on Roy Clark. He was super talented. Did you ever watch Hee Haw?
Look up more of Roy Clark. You will be amazed at what he can do...any kind of guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, harmonica & so much more. People don't take him seriously because he's a country singer. They dismiss him.
Roy can do it all sing, play many instruments, comedy. He hosted along with Buck Owens a show called "Hee Haw."
One of many greats in Country Music. Along with Roy are Glenn Campbell, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins & many others. When these guys got together is was great joy for us. They left their egos behind & enjoyed picking together. All you see is the smiles on their faces.
Wait til you see what Roy can do with an electronic guitar. We saw this stuff all the time on tv. Many times on " the Hew Haw show".
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting him at a private performance around 40 years ago. An amazing artist and an incredibly humble, funny, kind human being. He could play anything with strings. I love your channel and hope to see more Roy Clark on here
Wait till my man discovers Rodrigo y Gabriela - "Tamacun" or "Hanuman". He is gonna lose his mind, especially a live version where he can see Gabriela play. Her "percussion style" of play still baffles me and I've been playing for 30 years.
B.P. , if you watch her play, watch her right hand. As it strums the rhythm, she is hitting the body of the guitar to mimmick the drums. So she is essentially playing 2 instruments simultaneously
Roy's been doing that for decades but I will check them out
They are fantastic
Roy Clark is an amazing musician/singer/comedian. His true music talent often gets overlooked because people think of him as just that guy from Hee Haw. However, as you see here his guitar skills are top notch. While he does play some classical music, he often gets cast as a country musician. Some recommendations of more Roy Clark:
Instrumentals:
12 Street Rag (the black and white of him playing it on an electric is amazing)
Duelin' Banjos (there are videos of him playing this on guitar and banjo)
Orange Blossom Special (I think there is a video of him playing this on the fiddle)
Singing:
Thank God and Greyhound
Yesterday When I was Young
Folsom Prison Blues (I would recommend the duet of him and Johnny Cash for this one)
This is a deep rabbit hole, but worth exploring. Also I'll mention another top guitarist who could sing and that is Glen Campbell. A great introduction of his guitar skills, is him playing the William Tell Overture. There are many videos of him playing it. It is hard to pick a bad version of it. He played it on electric and 12 string accoustical (which is insane given the speed). One thing that I find impressive about both of these guitarists is that they played with little to no distortion. Any mistake and you are going to hear it. But as you saw here, they both achieved levels of perfection that are hard to believe. Thanks for the reaction.
This is jawdroppin playing. Way beyond most guitarists. But the thing that makes it sublime is the way it flows and never stumbles or seems hurried. Just a perfect musical statement
An American Treasure Roy Clark.
You are witnessing the genius that music and artists were in my day.
I might be an old woman now, but the tradeoff is that I got to grow up in the middle of it all.
Roy Clark is a master of string instruments, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and hosted a country music variety show called Hee Haw for about 20 years. Check out him doing Dueling Banjos with Buck Trent. Great reaction
I love his banjo picking too, one of if not the greatest picker, plus a great comedic actor and sweet human being.
Roy was so phenomenal. He was in my belief, in the top 2 percent of guitarist in the world. No one will ever do what he was able to do on just an acoustic guitar. He played electric very many times, but he was so consummate and what he did.
Thank you, Pegasus, for reacting to my suggestion. You always do a top-notch reaction.
Roy was one of my favorite human beings. He was a host on Hee-Haw. He is super funny, just a talented person.
I know of Roy Clark ( country singer/guitar legend,) thanks to my grandparents watching a country comedy variety show named " HE HAW" Roy Clark was one of the main stars.
Roy clark is in the grand ole oprey fir a reason! He is one of the best. Check out more of his work! He is someone you should watch!
Roy Clark was one of the most gifted guitar virtuosos that ever lived. Not at all what you would expect from a country artist. He was also funny as can be. Here he’s appearing on a prime time situation comedy called “The Odd Couple.“
Tommy Emanuel - Classical Gas! Guitar player extraordinaire. Does things with a guitar that you can’t believe.
Tommy Emanuel's version of "Classical Gas" is one of my all time favorites. BP needs to hear it!
Roy Clark was so great. Hilarious too!
I grew up watching Roy Clark.
The man was a legend. He could play any stringed instrument.
I truly love your reactions, particularly how Roy Clarke has left you speechless. He was a truly brilliant musician and all-around great guy. He made us laugh on "Hee-Haw" and then made us cry when he played and sang so heartbreakingly "Yesterday when I was Young". This is what pure talent and a lifetime spent mastering an instrument gets you.
