Here's ten incredible Wes Montgomery lines to deepen your bebop vocabulary! These came from his solo on the song "Tune Up" from his album "Movin Along" on Riverside (1960). Extremely underrated album! These licks are great examples of his playful and hard swinging style. Check out some of the key concept analysis and takeaways at the end of the video!

    Alex
Electric bass player is Wes' brother, Monk Montgomery

According to what I've read it was his brother, Monk Montgomery, who played electric bass.

Hello Alex, I've been a Wes Montgomery fan since I was in highschool in the 1960s. I play guitar and Wes was a big influence. I love your transcriptions. The really sound like him. Keep up the great work. Rony Be.

A beautiful video . I am a lover of Wes's playing , but I'm practising these licks on chromatic harmonica . Your video gets right down to business with useful insights into what is happening in these licks . Thankyou !

Wes used a 6 string Danelectro bass - my nerdy intuition makes me think it compliments James Clay's flute. At least jazz makes nerds cool 😀 Great licks, I really like that ya slowed em down too, cheers from county Devon, England.

Hi, great teaching from you and excellent skills. Wondering of could You made with this method some whole song of Herb Ellis? It’s perfect way for me and I think many of us to better remember melody by practicing licks with You like here, but with whole songs. Kind regards from Poland 😊

I really dig your approach to teaching Wes Stuff. I just started playing bumpin', and it has taken me a very l long time; probably not the best song choice to start learning jazz. Do you have a video of improving my thumb speed and left hand?

These are great. And your playing is, too. This is not a complaint: The last two eighth notes in the notation for the second bar of the ninth example don’t match what you’re playing, which sounds right.

The major seventh over the flat 7th is what is confusing to me, but it's done a lot in Jazz. What is your spelling or theory, just a simple passing tone from nowhere? In secondary dominants is where you see it a lot.

I thought there would be two hundred fifty one licks 😛 Those rhythmic phrases (along with the accents) are absolutely swinging---I'm actually more interested in that more than the notes. Great playing by the way.
