Anytime a transmission or portal gear sits on a pin inserted through a shaft, the pin seat in gear is only rounded on one side of the gear. If u look closely on ALL transmission or portal gears the gear "SHOULD" only go on one way but it can be installed either way because it appears as if it doesn't matter which side the pin sit's on, that's why we're seeing/hearing random videos of clicking SCX10III Jeeps & SCX10II UMG10's with various degrees of clicking depending how many transmission or portal gears are sitting on pins incorrectly! Some have just been lucky cuz it's a 50/50 chance of getting each gear seated on their pins correctly! Axial should make this clear in the instructions, luckily I saw a few other videos before I built my SCX10III Jeep. Exocaged said he installed his in the correct orientation and still had significant clicking. I believe I also watched an interview with one of the Axial designers admitting there was an incorrect tolerance on the transmission gears and that is the root cause of the clicking. And that putting the gear in backwards emphasised the issue.

excellent job and thanks for the free info as I just ordered this gear set to install in my 10III as I build it the first time and yes a two speed trans geared correctly is a must, 1St gear should be dead slow and 2nd should be about walking speed, my full size 2020 JLU Rubicon has low gear to creep over obstacles and not to get to the mall faster! if we are going to play tiny trucks correctly it should have low low 1st gear and scale 2nd gear, those that run only one gear aren't playing scale tiny trucks correctly and should only be allowed to drive to the mall.
I like having the 2 speed. Our comps we have around here have sometimes have longer driving sections in between the technical sections due to our terrain. So the 2 speed helps with those few extra seconds on the time clock.
I have a 2 speed but I use it very infrequently, the only time high gear is ever used is combined with me saying “yeah, and it has a 2 speed transmission too”. Also, thank you for reaffirming my decision to not use the 2 speed option in this kit, when it finally gets here.

Hi, first of all thank you for the great content. I am completely new to the RC crawler world and your videos have been a great source of information and inspiration. In fact, i am in the process of building an SCX10.3 as my first truck. Second, i apologize for the length of this post. From my point of view, the 2 speed transmission makes perfect sense for this vehicle. I understand that for a hardcore crawler fan having, the latest and greatest in your truck is a no-brainer and that spending over 200$ on a high power brush-less system is not a problem. However, from my perspective its just too much. I have ordered a 20$ crawlmaster motor that should be butter smooth at low speed and provide an appropriate top speed for this truck in second gear. It seems to me that you are spending a lot of money for the fast brush-less system, spending more money to slow it down and ending up with the same speeds that an inexpensive brushed motor provides. Am i missing something? Is brush-less simply overkill for this type of rc? Finally, the two speed transmission is one of the elements that take this kit closer to a 1:1 vehicle and that is appealing to me.
Thanks for the comment, but yes, you are missing something. I'm gaining additional reduction, and therefore not taxing the motor but adding the gearing. It's not an expensive change, and well worth it in my opinion. Using your less expensive brushed system would still benefit from it. Brushless is NEVER overkill in my opinion.
Thanks for the reply. I did not consider that angle. I would love to see a comparison between a brushed and brushless system on the same crawler. Keep up the great content.
I've just upgraded to a 2 speed in my trx4 sports. And its probably my favorite mod. Mixed with the crawlmaster sports 550 12t its got amazing crawl control. But in high gear its got plenty of wheel speed for mud, sand, ect or simply sending it on a mission from my camp site
I wish trax-ass would make different ratios for the 2 speed. I’d go with the stock 64:1 low and a 20:1 high. But I’m living in between running a 13t pinion.
Thats because there is an actual significant difference in those gears. The spread is much higher so using 2nd actually feels like a faster gear in the TRX4.
@@TheNamesArif I wouldn’t mind owning an Arrma, but I only have one HH product which is my CRAPra kit. I just bought the OG SCX10 1 Today. I love it. Im for 1 DISLIKE the new SCX10 series, i hate the portal axles. So much aftermarket for the OG SCX10. Im putting Vanquish products on it to the max. 2.2 tires, brushless, castle sidewinder ESC, spektrum 5 ch radio, 3s 2200 battery. Will be just used for trail runs, youtube videos, but no Competitions.
I'm with you and Josh... Never felt the need for a 2 speed in a SCX10... Any of them. I would like to see how to lock it out, and just have Dig. I asked you for advice in your last Video... It's OK you didn't answer. That's an EPIC idea!! And even an easy upgrade. Just add the Gears in the build. 😉 IF by some miracle I win the SNU/Holmes contest... I'll probably get a SCX10 III. If not, I'm going in another Brushed direction. Please stay SAFE! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I like my two speed set up. I like doing long trails of between 3 and 6 km's (about 2 to 4 miles...) And I like to be able go a quickly across the flat spots and have the wheel speed for climbing the sandy banks. Even with brushless....
Thank you so much to the man who made the Gear Ratio Spreadsheet, Its helped so much in working out which pinion I'm going to use and weather or not the optional gears are for me. I'm not going to use the 2 speed, i have a Mamba X and a Slate motor to go in.
Agree on the two speed being redundant with the appropriate ratio/pinion, but my objection is for weight and complexity. I enjoy wheelspeed, because I want my tiny truck to act like a 1/1; driveable in a range of environments.
i removed the unlockable diffs and 2 speed in all my trx4's got 45:1 gearing in all of them with an underdrive gear in the rear and it's plenty fast with a 2700kv puller pro, way faster than it should be but it's nice
I think some of the 2 speed arguments need to also look at what type of trail are you running. If some big open area between optical is a nice to open things up
I run a two speed, mostly to get a really low gear crawl and control, but can switch for more wheel speed if needed. I'll admit I seldom use the second gear but when I need it I have it.
Stock trucks with one speed goes plenty fast on 3s and I put an 18 tooth on a vaterra one time and it would fly but crawl suffered and motor was short lived
Awesome informational video. I have done this and it does amazing for crawling. Currently have a roc412 3100kv motor. Still plenty of wheel speed if i need it but the crawlability is so much better over stock. Also run a 12t pinion.
Something interesting to note, and you can see this born out in data logs, is that you’re not really getting any more torque at the wheel when you’re gearing down. The motor simply draws less amps lol. It’s easier for the motor and makes crawling smoother, but unless your driveline is bound down it will just rev high and do nothing.
Great info, thanks Matt👍 I installed the two speed but really won't engage it unless I'm running with my son and his TRX4. He feels the need for speed🤣😂
Hey bud searching for an option to help what I thought was the lowest way to go... swap to a 11tooth pinion. I did this and it is really loud at half to full throttle. I put a 17tooth in and it's all nice and quiet and smooth but to fast. Can I go back to 11tooth and change another gear to mesh better. Please help me out I don't like this thing to race I really only want to slow crawl. With 3slipo and a 1800kv fusion set up it's still faster than I want with with 11 tooth.( I keep the remote set at 75 percent.)
Matt. First issue that I have with my SCX10-III are the lengths of the shock springs. The kit comes with 13mm x 62mm long springs (green & red). With these, I have the front and rear adjustment collars all the way up on my rig; but, still want to lower the overall height of the III if that was possible. Researching shorter springs and/or lower spring perches. Second issue is that the right front wheels lifts too easily and unloads on steep climbs. Feel that the kit should have come with stiffer springs at the rear to help control that issue. Bottom line...I am hoping to find something like 13mm x 55mm springs with about a 2 lbs/inch rate. Or, will try other shock/spring assemblies. FYI...I am running the new Proline Jeep JL body (210 grams painted) for better performance than what the kit body allows (500 grams?). Fits pretty well.
If you want to shorten the overall length of the shocks, put some nitro fuel tubing under the piston, It will limit the travel and shorten the shock length. Easy fix.
@@scalebuildersguild Matt. A little too easy...LOL With internal spacers, I would still end up with no available adjustability of the springs via the shock collars. Thanks!
I enjoy 2 speeds, as I have a orginal 10.1 with the rc4wd 2 speed, and under drive gears sets, so once I get my 10.3 I'll actually try that 98 to 1 reduction, with a holmes brushless system
I feel that the problem with most 2-speeds is that the difference between 1st and 2nd gear is not great enough. The TRX-4 2-speed is better than most, but it could be better. If your 1st gear FDR is ~60:1 then make 2nd ~20:1.
And kudos to Suicide Shift for his gearing spreadsheet. Being able to review the formulas used within it helps with understanding gearing. Will be using it to create a workbook of spreadsheets for my other crawlers. Yes, I am a spreadsheet nerd! LOL
I've never used a 2 speed before. I have the scx10.2 kit but never hooked up the 2 speed. I never had a problem with its overall speed so i did not see the point it using it. But im very interested in the dig unit on the scx10.3. Waiting on mine to come in.
Most of the places I use a crawler have a lot of flat sections that it's nice to have a 2 speed for. I can flip a switch, blast through those to the more fun sections. They are mostly a straight shot, so unlocking diffs is pointless for me. I am not happy with the way the SCX10-3 2 speed is however. The ratios are so close that it seems pointless. The TRX4 is better in that respect, however I like the SCX10-3 more.
The two speed in a crawler has never really interested me, I locked out the three speed in my Tamyia semi as third is way too fast, unless I wanted to drag race it. A little faster than a normal walking pace is fast enough.
took the two speed gears out after the first run, useless , put in 12t pinion and waiting on the other gear set, Installed the OD front gears while building it.
I have not builded mine yet , waiting for all the upgrades , tips . I thinking of just going with the 11 tooth pinion. 13 t or 16t Holmes hobbies crawlmaster sport. Do you think I can getaway with not putting in spacer for 2 speed , and try to hold it in place with zip tie or something? Definitely want dig . Ordered the 24% over drive from super shafty. Soooo many options. What do you think of my motor choice, ?? I do want to stay with brushed. I have hobbiewing 1080. Thanks for all the awesome videos. 😊
3s and I'm crawling plus I have the power to make all wheels dig in, I don't get the number ratio I would like to see a regular out the box crawler versus this two speed deal...
You asked what hop ups I'd like to see. I'd really like to see a faster 2nd gear. Or some sort of 2 speed gearing options. Does anyone know if that's available? As some of the guys already said, these trucks are for driving, not carrying. I'd rather carry an extra battery than carry the truck!
Yes I love having 2 speeds! In our area you need wheel speed just as bad as slow control! When your on loose terrain slow just spins and slides down hills gotta pop in into second and power up! Plus it’s fun to bash a bit and get a little air! I think it is a shame they made a 2 speed with wry little difference in speed from 1st to 2nd gear! Because of that I’m seriously considering a trx4 over the scx10.3! Pretty bad when a scx10.2 can probably out do the new scx10.3 in cog and over all climbing! Going off what I’ve seen of it so far. Also gotta keep in mind sensored brushless systems are really expensive! So not everyone can afford to just slap a brushless on there crawlers. 😔
Scale Builder's Guild True edited to very little difference. All I mean is the 2 speed trx4 and 2 speed tf2 are both faster and slower out of the box seems. 🤔 I’m considering a new crawler but kinda torn between scx10.3 and the trx4. So far the trans gearing seems better on the trx4 ? I already have a scx10.2 also. So what’s your opinion? Is anyway you could compare the 2 like nine stock with the same motors and battery? Haven’t seen it done yet. 😅
Scale Builder's Guild oh are you getting here standard axle version when it drops? Very interested in that? Curious if it will be worth getting to. ✌️😊
You mentioned that gear reduction from the portals is why the manual lists the 1:1... My question is: Do you intend to further reduce the gearing ratio AND keep the portals, or do you plan on switching to regular shafts when they are released? Thank you very much for your videos and insight!
I have the portals installed, so there's no way to get further reduction, at the highest, you can get 98:1 reduction. Once you lose the reduction at the portal, expect it to be closer to 60-ish FDR.
This makes me want to get the truck more now and use a different body.. Not a JK fan.. I like the 2 speed for getting to crawl spots. Id like to see the 2nd gear now tuned for speed so there's even more of a speed difference.
Mmmmmm I don’t know about the 2speed... too many moving parts and it’s just extra weight, but the dig on the other hand is a different story, I feel like the dig is an essential part of crawling and should still be able to work during this pandemic 😂
I'm no expert that's for sure, but I'm still gonna give my opinion! I have the Capra, and the SCX10iii (also SCX10ii UMG & TRX4), both are using Hobbywing Axe 540 1800Kv systems (Castle is very expensive and hard to get in UK at the moment), on 3s with stock pinions, both are good at crawling, and seem to have loads of power down low, and good wheel speed. Rather than using a high Kv motor (2850Kv) and gearing down why not use a lower Kv motor (1900Kv)? Anyway the two speed on the SCX10iii does seem a little pointless, and at low speed its hard to tell which gear you are in as they are very close, perhaps they could have made the lower gear a little lower and the high gear a little higher. What I would really like is for one of the manufacturers to make quieter or silent transmissions, I guess it would involve helical gears which would be expensive and complicated to make and implement. My UMG10 is too loud!
The idea here is to add reduction, not just less KV. I keep all the torque, and in fact, actually increase it be reducing the gearing. Just putting a slower motor in won't garner the same results.
Thanks for the explanation, perhaps you could make a head to head video, to show the results of high Kv with low gearing Vs Lower Kv with higher gearing, would love to see the results, anyway I enjoy watching your videos, thanks and stay safe!
To be honest I don’t really think 2 speed transmission is that useful because most of the time I’m going to be crawling over rocks and going quite slow. If you want to go fast get a slash or a UDR or something geared higher.
Great video as I'll probably be using that chart, thanx. Me personally,I prefer 2 or even 3 speeds as if I need a little more acceleration and speed,I know its there. I gotta ask, where did you get your action of yourself? I'd love to get 1 for myself, thanx.
I like ignorant low speed torque.(high turn brushed and spur and pinion as far as I can go). So, the 2 speed can bring it back to a fair trail speed. Not enough wheel speed for steep lose dirt. But, that just sends you into the bushes anyway. =)
I seem to find a little faster than normal walking speed is more than enough for a trail/ crawler truck.. if I want speed I run my 1/8 brushless monster truck
this was a very helpful video. I have ordered my SCX10iii and should have it by May. With this being my first kit I going to do both the dig and 2 speed. But I have a feeling I will be ditching the 2 speed after a few runs since there is no need for the speed but wanted to see if it would work for the purpose of driving it to the location I am crawling at.. since I am lazy and do not want to carry it. The gear ration file is very helpful and thank you for sharing that. Is all this with it still being with the portal still in it and not a straight axle?
Yes the portal gear ratios are in the spread sheet. If in the future one decides to go with straight axles, (no portals) just adjust the numbers for the portal gears to 1 and 1 respectively. This will null out that calculation. This is the same as what I list as the "transfer case" gears at 27 and 27 respectively. This is 1:1 so the gear ratio for the spreadsheet does not change unless you update the "New Value" column with the new Transfer Case gear numbers. I hope that did not confuse things.
Hi Matt, I notice most of your rigs have a very clean wiring look with what appears to be a protective sleeve. What product is that? Thank you, and great stuff with the videos!
What’s a good gear reduction for a stock RTR SCX 10 2 with a 4400 kv brushless I changed cause the stock motor burnt up...? Love the channel, great stuff man...
That is a LOT of motor for these trucks. I would consider getting a lower KV motor if you cannot get your speed to where you like it. I also have a sheet for the SCX10II as I own one of those as well. drive.google.com/file/d/1AJKqNaYa0rMnErDJQw89WmFJ0Nm68P_l/view?usp=sharing Put in your numbers for the gears, battery, Kv, and tire size. This way you can see what your top speed is now and how much you can slow it down with available gear changes.

This is the obvious first mod to do to the 10iii in my opinion. 👍
IF by some miracle I win the SNU/Holmes contest... I'll probably get a SCX10 III. If not, I'm going in another Brushed direction.
Please stay SAFE! 😷
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
On the next III build I do, I'll be sure to detail the 2 speed delete. It's really, really easy.
I just ordered the gears and will be adding a 11T pinion
I just ordered mine Friday can't wait for it to get here. love your videos on it thank you.
Hope you enjoy it!
Where did u guys order for scx10 .3?
Agree on the two speed being redundant with the appropriate ratio/pinion, but my objection is for weight and complexity.
I enjoy wheelspeed, because I want my tiny truck to act like a 1/1; driveable in a range of environments.
I really enjoy having a 2 speed in my rr10 bomber. Granted that’s a rock racer but I like it.
Little different application, no?
i removed the unlockable diffs and 2 speed in all my trx4's got 45:1 gearing in all of them with an underdrive gear in the rear and it's plenty fast with a 2700kv puller pro, way faster than it should be but it's nice
I think some of the 2 speed arguments need to also look at what type of trail are you running. If some big open area between optical is a nice to open things up
I love the idea of a two speed due to brushless systems are expensive and I always have brushed motors in my collection
I dig your vids, I would like to see a video about dig n second gear for a real rc rockcrawler fan and having fun outside! Thanks
I cover that in the initial review video! And demo it!
I run a two speed, mostly to get a really low gear crawl and control, but can switch for more wheel speed if needed. I'll admit I seldom use the second gear but when I need it I have it.
Thanks for sharing!
SCX10III's athletic ability is great! 7:02
Thanks for this post. Not a fan of the 2 speed for what I do. More interested in getting the crawling performance up.
That’s very interesting! That’s the kind of data I’m very interested in seeing.
Great info, thanks Matt👍 I installed the two speed but really won't engage it unless I'm running with my son and his TRX4. He feels the need for speed🤣😂
23% OD 12t pinion, 2700PP stubby mine creeps. Can’t imagine a two speed, mines locked out.
Awesome in depth info like always, thanks for sharing! Cheers crawling friends-
Our pleasure!
I've got a 3300kv axe in mine have yet to test it but I'm going to put the 11 tooth in there first
Here's an important tip. Thank you. That was very helpful.
You're welcome!
I feel that the problem with most 2-speeds is that the difference between 1st and 2nd gear is not great enough. The TRX-4 2-speed is better than most, but it could be better. If your 1st gear FDR is ~60:1 then make 2nd ~20:1.
I run a 55t in my scx10.2, speed is not something I worry about when crawling.
And kudos to Suicide Shift for his gearing spreadsheet. Being able to review the formulas used within it helps with understanding gearing. Will be using it to create a workbook of spreadsheets for my other crawlers. Yes, I am a spreadsheet nerd! LOL
Can't wait to get mines scx10 iii
I've never used a 2 speed before. I have the scx10.2 kit but never hooked up the 2 speed. I never had a problem with its overall speed so i did not see the point it using it. But im very interested in the dig unit on the scx10.3. Waiting on mine to come in.
No two speed for me. I use either the RC4WD or more often the GCM Racing scale drivelines.
love the intro..... *blows dust and coughs= everyone at home jumps...then laughs* lol
You explain very good..looking foward for the next one..✌
Spreadsheet is trick. Nice video.
Yes! Thank you!
I built mine with a 12t pinion and a 1800kv hw axe. Haven’t tried it yet but hoping it’s really controllable
Great video and the new t'shirt design is super
I'm glad you like it!
Just run it like that an see what needs replacing over time just for something different just a thought 👍👍
The TRX4 is better in that respect, however I like the SCX10-3 more.
excellent information as usual..... love the truck, just a pity we cant get them over here in the UK yet.
Sorry to hear that, I thought some arrived there first.
@@scalebuildersguild yeah but unless you had a preorder in or a youtube guru..... well you know the rest ... lol
The two speed in a crawler has never really interested me, I locked out the three speed in my Tamyia semi as third is way too fast, unless I wanted to drag race it. A little faster than a normal walking pace is fast enough.
Thanks for all the great info on gearing
Any time!
took the two speed gears out after the first run, useless , put in 12t pinion and waiting on the other gear set, Installed the OD front gears while building it.
Where do you buy the gears that go inside the transmission, the different size ones ? 🙏
Links are in the description!
I see it now. didn't Scroll down thank you 🙏
I have not builded mine yet , waiting for all the upgrades , tips . 😊
Only time I use 2nd gear is when I get back to the parking lot and I want to sling the mud/water out of the tires.
Awesome video man. Thanks for the info👍👍
3s and I'm crawling plus I have the power to make all wheels dig in, I don't get the number ratio I would like to see a regular out the box crawler versus this two speed deal...
I want to get a new body painted up nice for my crawler. Any suggestions to where i could send one to be done?
Harley used soots for his check it out on face book
Do some chassis upgrades!!!! Please🤘🏼
id like to see a gear ratio calculator standard with the build instructions..........
You should bring out the HEMTT
I no longer own it, GCM Racing took it off my hands.
So when’s the skid plate for a 3 gear gonna show up? I sat in wonder, listened to the sound of heavy thunder.
I'll never go back to that style of trans again. Far more options here.
Ehh. Too many bells and whistles. More parts=more to break.
Almost no difference is a bit of an exaggeration. There’s at least 5mph difference!
Scale Builder's Guild True edited to very little difference. All I mean is the 2 speed trx4 and 2 speed tf2 are both faster and slower out of the box seems. 🤔
I’m considering a new crawler but kinda torn between scx10.3 and the trx4.
I'm interested in seeing, if running straight axles will tuck the axle up into the chassis enough to make 4.19s look good.
Can't help you there, yet.
This is a great "yet."
Great job!
Great information, thank you! 👍✌️
Glad it was helpful!
Now that's more like it ! Fast is for bashing lol
This makes me want to get the truck more now and use a different body.. Not a JK fan.. I like the 2 speed for getting to crawl spots. Id like to see the 2nd gear now tuned for speed so there's even more of a speed difference.
They're not independent, and so far, no easy way to get the spread to be larger between 1st & 2nd.
11T spur result is 98:1? Then that's what I want since my 1:1 scale jeep has that - or close to it
Mmmmmm I don’t know about the 2speed... too many moving parts and it’s just extra weight, but the dig on the other hand is a different story, I feel like the dig is an essential part of crawling and should still be able to work during this pandemic 😂
If I'm out hiking/trailing. High gear works great for walking speed. Low gear seems to fall behind.
Great video as I'll probably be using that chart, thanx. Me personally,I prefer 2 or even 3 speeds as if I need a little more acceleration and speed,I know its there. I gotta ask, where did you get your action of yourself? I'd love to get 1 for myself, thanx.
A friend made it for me many years ago. Thanks for watching!
For my $450 budget, What crawler should I get?
Not really up to me to answer without a lot more info. The best truck is the one that puts a smile on your face.
Good video as always. I was hoping for cats though.
Next time!
I like ignorant low speed torque.(high turn brushed and spur and pinion as far as I can go). So, the 2 speed can bring it back to a fair trail speed. Not enough wheel speed for steep lose dirt. But, that just sends you into the bushes anyway. =)
Also , 2s is for in the house.
I seem to find a little faster than normal walking speed is more than enough for a trail/ crawler truck.. if I want speed I run my 1/8 brushless monster truck
some great info there
this was a very helpful video.
These ratios will work for portals or straight axles, whenever they come out. But yes, the calculations I'm showing still have the portals.
Was just curious as to why u don't keep your rc's on blocks/jacks? Do u have flat spot issues with your tires? Love the videos.. ty
I rotate them daily.
Magnet mounts qualify as an upgrade?
Hi Matt, I notice most of your rigs have a very clean wiring look with what appears to be a protective sleeve. What product is that? Thank you, and great stuff with the videos!
AlexTech wire shroud. Get it on Amazon.
@@scalebuildersguild Thank you, Matt. Much appreciated!
What’s a good gear reduction for a stock RTR SCX 10 2 with a 4400 kv brushless I changed cause the stock motor burnt up...? Love the channel, great stuff man...
I'd start by reducing the pinion size and increasing the spur.
That is a LOT of motor for these trucks. I would consider getting a lower KV motor if you cannot get your speed to where you like it. I also have a sheet for the SCX10II as I own one of those as well. drive.google.com/file/d/1AJKqNaYa0rMnErDJQw89WmFJ0Nm68P_l/view?usp=sharing
Put in your numbers for the gears, battery, Kv, and tire size. This way you can see what your top speed is now and how much you can slow it down with available gear changes.
