    On the blue and white one, when you edge stitched it closed, did you use a zigzag stitch too? Nice tutorial

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't use a zigzag stitch for the edge stitch. I wasn't worried about that one section not stretching.

    which needle is best for stretched fablics ..?

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  ปีที่แล้ว

      The sewing machine needles I like to use for knit fabric is a ballpoint needle or a stretch needle

    Can one use cotton fabric?

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  ปีที่แล้ว

      For this headband you can only use knit fabric. You can't use cotton fabric that doesn't stretch because it won't stretch around your head.

    does it matter what kind of sewing machine is used?

    • @HeatherHandmade

      any sewing machine with a zigzag stitch works great!

    I'm not understanding the extra seam. Why cut 2 when you can make it out of one straight piece and move the twist opposite to your finishing seam once the end is sewn... I will try it out and see what happens!

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It helps stabilize both sides so that the twist stays inthe front

      I actually have two scrap lycra pieces that are 8.5 by 11 so its also a great use of scraps

    Thanks so much for this tutorial! What kind of thread are you using? I used a regular cotton thread and it immediately snapped when I stretched the headband to put it over my head. Is there a certain thread you would suggest?

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a poly cotton all purpose thread. Did you use a zigzag stitch?

    • @hannahmitchell2558
      @hannahmitchell2558 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeatherHandmade thank you for the response! I did use a zigzag stitch (on the widest setting), and I was incorrect in my first comment, I actually used a 100% polyester all purpose thread. When you stretch the headband can you feel the tightness of the thread at all?

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannahmitchell2558 No, I can't feel my seam when I stretch my headband. That's very curious because there shouldn't be a problem but there's lots of factors when sewing knit fabrics. Was the zigzag stitch long or short? (Like basting vs regular stitches) What type of fabric were you using?

    • @hannahmitchell2558
      @hannahmitchell2558 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeatherHandmade Oh, interesting... I did a long zigzag (set to 5/5 on my machine) with low tension and an average stitch length. I've played around with it a bit and have started doing a longer straight stitch for the seams and reinforcing it with a narrower zigzag over the top of it. That's strengthened the seam to prevent it from breaking easily, but I can definitely still feel the seam when I stretch the headband. Would you mind sharing what setting you use when stitching your headbands? It looks like you're using a narrower zigzag here.

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannahmitchell2558 I think the problem is the longer stitch length. It makes the zigzag stitch less stretchy. I usually do a 3 width and a 2.4 length (that's the regular stitch length). Sometimes I even have to go up to a 3.5 width with really stretchy fabric.

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you might want to make it an inch or two shorter so that it stretches around your head instead of just sitting on your head. Does that make sense?

    I feel silly, but for the twist headband, the second one, I can't for the life of me figure out how the second step is pinned and sewn. Camera angels could help if I could see what's going on while it's being sewn. Going to keep trying though!

  • @everythingsperfectagain8112

    Curious why you didn’t just take a long 20” piece for the second one Instead of sewing two 10” pieces together to make it long?

    • @HeatherHandmade
      @HeatherHandmade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did two pieces since the side seams help keep the twist in the right place. It also helps keep the sides flat instead of bunching up.
