I attempted to get a permit to produce ethanol in PA. I was honest and forthright, and they shot me down quickly and said no matter how many acres of land I own, no matter how much safety I include, no matter how knowledgeable I may be, no matter how upfront and honest and legal I would commit to being, they have decided that I am not free to pursue my happiness by distilling on my home land. America is not what it should be, it should be about we, the people, not them, the politicians. Not everything should be about their damned money.
WoW! Thanks so much for the great info and going into detail, This has helped me a bunch get my head around ethanol still. Thta is a crazy nice lookin still u got there my fried, its a peice of art for sure Cheers
Getting a wireless mic system would be worthless due to the high amount of background noise. Best bet is to change production styles and narrate over recorded video.
Mike, what would you think about adding two doublers very near to the boiler of the still (to maintain heat) containing Ca(OH)2 in one and activated carbon in the other? Would this succesfully heighten ABV while cleaning the product while killing two birds in one stone (e.g. spirit filtration)? Or would this just add too much time to distilling?
Mike, so your flute system acts as a double still scrubber...nice! I like your run time too. I have seen all day long to pull a gallon out of 15...nice one! my best find on fuel on the market is $30ish per gallon so yes making your own works...I understand there are flavor additives for your fuel too, rum, wiskey flavor and naked would be vodka flavored fuel ...its win win...3 thumbs up
I personally am not interested in making Alcohol-I simply want to know how to build that Flute piping-I love how it looks. I was planning on making a Solar Hot water tank using that Flute design. Can you tell me where you got it-or how you made it. Thanks.
That is a sick system. I'm jealous. I had the same problem with my ball valve. Their all made in Italy. I soldered mine in and I think that the seal was lost because of the heat. I took the nut/arm off and pulled out that nut that holds the shaft on. Put some tape on it and had to use vice grips because you have to push and twist. Never had a problem after that.
Always make sure that the Ball Valve is WIDE OPEN when sweating it. This allows for the heat to pass through and dissipate without damaging any of the seals.
i think this product is a must have if you can possibly afford one. i have seen other countries ration fuel and huge waiting lines to get only a couple gallons. during ww2 Germany had farmers making fuel out of potatoes to help provide fuel to the millitary. in a emergency a guy could power one off a generator. maybe make gas for a chainsaw provided you have two stroke oil allready or make a fuel for camp stoves, lanters even small amounts of fuel for a vehicle. i need one of these things.
Fixing your leak on the ball valve is easy. First turn off the water supply, pull the handle. Then pull the packing nut that you are talking about tightening completely off. You can buy a roll of valve stem packing & simply push some new packing in hard around the valve stem & then tighten the nut back down pretty hard. If it goes down all of the way simply pull it back off & add more packing material then repeat. This will tighten the stem, then adjust the stem tension with the packing nut.
Im trying to work out the cost of a gallon of ethanol. Your spending about $25 on sugar and 5 on yeast only to make about 4gal of Ethanol. Is that about right?
I have seen a few setups that have the plates and viewing ports. I just cant seem to find out why their are these viewing ports or why there are plates. If the end product goes up and then condenses iinto liquid isnt that all that matters? Additionally they say you need to measure temp at what is it 170 ish to make sure your pulling ethanol instead of methonol 140 ish. What are you measuring mash temp, air temp, or tank temp? Thanks
Also known in the petrochemical industry as a sight glass and sometimes a bulls eye. 39 years ago I started working as a chemical plant operator and have worked in many refineries, chemical plants, etc. The distillation columns I am used to range from 15 feet to 280 feet high.
Those plates all run at different temperatures. So the first plate vaporizes and condenses to a higher concentration. Then this vaporizes and condenses to an even higher concentration. This repeats with diminishing returns. Without the plates the liquid would condense with a purity of the 1st plate. More plates = more distillation. This allows 1 column to act like 4 or 5+. Source: Chemical Engineer
hey i would like to buy one of these but wouldn't mind actually picking one up in person..pay with cash. I live in pa so im guessing it about a 10 hour drive. just wondering if something like this is possible....I will be off work until next monday
as soon as i get my money right im buying from you guys. trying to get all the info i need so i can operate the right way not trying to go the popcorn sutton way lol but yeah i love the product you guys have 5 hours 4 gallons
Actually, this unit runs less than $2,500. This is the 26 gallon version. The one you are referring to is the 50 gallon version and yes, it's much higher in price. We started with a homemade still for around $100, then moved up to the 8 gallon for about $500. When we get bored with that, this 26 gallon version will be next on the shopping list...
Hey speedman42, if you lower your temp to around 60-65C you will get a higher percentage of ethanol; somewhere in the neighborhood of 94% overall grade for the entire run. It might take a few more minutes for the run to process but with that kind of difference in quality it is definitely worth it. That way, you are actually squeezing every last drop of ethanol out of the wash with way less water integration. Just a recommendation. Works great though.
Pretty well self serve -I got to get my reflux going just looking for the right kettle have all the rest done was want ing to use a electric coffee pot they condensate real good -Yours is cuttting edge though .
Congress did not include a personal use exemption for distilled spirits in the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as it did for Wine and Beer. Possession of an unregistered still and production of distilled spirits without a Federal permit or payment of tax are illegal and implicate numerous Federal offenses: 26 USC Section 5601 Violations punishable as felonies with up to five years in prison. So if you think you can get any kind of permit, ethanol or otherwise, you'll be in for a surprise (after they give your serial number and name to the TTB like they did us).
Is it a good unit? Does it produce 95 percent? I built a 60 inch x 2 inch column with a 12 inch cooler column. It is like a Fractionating style still. The still is mounted to a 13 gallon beer keg. The cooler column itself is a 12 inch long 3/8 inch copper tube. I boil around 74 degrees to 84 degrees (the temperature controls itself) for 5 to 6 hours and produce about 13 pints of 95 percent ethanol. Some of it is put through a carbon filter at about 2 pints per hour, and the rest is drunk as is. Does my still do a great job? It has been doing a magnificent job for 8 years now, and it does not miss a beat. Oh I nearly forgot, what did my gear cost? Wait for it... It cost me $80 Australian. Cheers.
please tell me your Sydney side. im down in Wollongong and would love someone local to converse with. These Merican lads know there stuff without doubt, Mike at Hillbilly, George at barley and hops are 2 prime examples but someone in my neck o the woods would be great...
How is the Hillbilly flute compared to the Mile Hi flute. both seem pretty cool except hillbilly is a single piece and expensive. Im looking to invest in a still of this magnitude but before i shell out thousands i wanted to make sure im choosing the best option. what do you all think?
Mile Hi is made in China, workmanship is poor, and final condenser is not very efficient. If you ever have a problem with ours we are here to make repairs or do any warrenty work. We will also help you learn to run your column. Thank you for asking
Ryan Walthuis Mile Hi products ARE NOT made in China. They are modular system that are tig welded, very adaptable and very easily cleaned compared to the single one piece brazed type of columns.
I would like to have a gallon of that to run my rc hydroplane,, should make it scream down the river,, I got a quart of heads to run it on and I couldn't believe how cold the carb was and the intake manifold,, it was ice cold,, but it ran likea bat out of hell
Nice demo - thanks for sharing. Assuming you're actually using it for fuel, I've gotta ask though - 50 lbs. of sugar, hours of effort and only ~3 gallons of ethanol... how is that any cheaper than actual gasoline?
If you are running at 70C at the head you should check your thermometer, either that or you are not distilling ethanol in your still, at 88% alcohol you should be running the still at around 80C.
@kindrixxx my generator runs of gas. i think ethonol would work. then again if it came down to it in an emergency situation open flame would be king. burn some wood with a mesh grill to set the still on gtg. getting the water out of the ethonol is the trick. i found the best way to do this " in theory" is dynamic seperation when you mix ethonol with some gasoline. you add water drop by drop untill you see the water drop out of suspension from the ethonal and seperate.
hello? i have watched your video and what no one can answer me is what dose the reflex tube has over the coil ? one hing is the money cos the reflex tube is like 20 time the price of a coil condenser.
I have trouble understanding you with all the background...wish I could hear as you seam to have a lot of knowledge to give. I really wanted to know more.
reckon the idea is the duplicity, or tricity.. heck he might try anything lol... but if you gona have one, why not be able to drive it and drink it, but don't mix the two right?
ANSWER TO 3/8 BALL VALVES... FYI.... most all 3/ 8 -1/2" ball valves are notorious for leaking gas and or liquid. I am not sure why but a wise man told me this a long time ago when I installed a gas heater in my shop.. There is nothing that can be done meaning more pipe dope or whatever.. My 2 cents.
Yeah, every ball valve ever made from every factory needs the packing nut tightened down when installed. Especially when the valve was soldered on rather than screwed on.
what is the benefit of reflux tube over coil condenser? copper coil has worked for over 200 years why change to reflux tube? plus NO ONE can tell me what dose copper have to do with the quality of moonshine? i use stainless steel everything and my moonshine turns out great every time! and clean up is a lot faster then copper!
As far as "Reflux" goes, in this video he is describing the action that is occuring. This is not a typical "Pot Still" but a "Reflux" still. The product is vaporized, condensed and vaporized several times over to get a higher alcohol percentage compared to a regular pot still, which is only vaporized once and then condensed once. One of the most beautiful small stills I have seen. Would love to have one. Good job.
Love the set up! Difficult to F it up! Great Job! Thanks!
Very well explained , great video ! I want one....
Beautiful still and great explained 😊💖
It is Totally Amazing! Great work!
WoW! Thanks so much for the great info and going into detail, This has helped me a bunch get my head around ethanol still.
Thta is a crazy nice lookin still u got there my fried, its a peice of art for sure
Cheers
Mike I have a similar set up. Have not run it yet. Great explanation. Thank you.
That is one PURDY setup! Nice Job!
Nice work and we will be buying our next still from you!
If you can afford that flute you can afford a wireless mic set. Sound is rough but I absolutely love everything else. Awesome
That's the owner Mike. He's a good ol boy, just because he can afford it don't means he needs it.
Getting a wireless mic system would be worthless due to the high amount of background noise. Best bet is to change production styles and narrate over recorded video.
Thank you for the video. Very informative.
Nice setup bro and very informative...
great video mate, well done.
Hi Mike all the way from Australia, great flute set up. Ever sent one to Australia?? love one of these at home....
Thank you - great video - do you have videos on how you make your mash?
The reflux still is a thing of human ingenuity and beauty
@ 23:26 ... it never gets old watching the stream runnin....;)
love the little view windows in the reflux!
hello? i have been making moonshine for about 6 months now but its only 8 or 10 gl how long dose it take to run off 50gl?
What kind on controller is that? have a rough time finding the TG 5500
Mike,

how about the cooling system? do you have a video on that? I see the barrel
!BRILLIANT !
Good stuff
Damn nice set up, did you buy this or build this?
I personally am not interested in making Alcohol-I simply want to know how to build that Flute piping-I love how it looks. I was planning on making a Solar Hot water tank using that Flute design. Can you tell me where you got it-or how you made it. Thanks.
what is the biggest still you guys make?? I'm looking for something in the 500 gallon range.
Magnificent !
How much did all that equipment cost ?
That is a sick system. I'm jealous. I had the same problem with my ball valve. Their all made in Italy. I soldered mine in and I think that the seal was lost because of the heat. Good stuff man
where do i need to go to get a permit? and how hard are they to get?
how much do you put in your gas tank ??
@speedman42 I assume you are able to run this still like a pot still with plates open... Is that correct?
how long did that take?
love the lap sponge filter
how does the deflagameter work? and is that needed to keep your levels at a purity level for fuel? I dont understand or see how its piped
I was thinking the same thing Drewgo, And then how much on the heating bill? (propane/electric or whatever it may be)
i think this product is a must have if you can possibly afford one. i have seen other countries ration fuel and huge waiting lines to get only a couple gallons. during ww2 Germany had farmers making fuel out of potatoes to help provide fuel to the millitary. in a emergency a guy could power one off a generator. maybe make gas for a chainsaw provided you have two stroke oil allready or make a fuel for camp stoves, lanters even small amounts of fuel for a vehicle. i need one of these things.
what proof do you need for fuel?
good job.. how much does one of these cost?
do you have to worry about methanol?
Fixing your leak on the ball valve is easy. First turn off the water supply, pull the handle. Then pull the packing nut that you are talking about tightening completely off. While I appreciate the great job you've done, the economics and the fact that you're ok with 10% water don't spell "fuel". But great job.
It's called re-distilling after.
makes sense. And truly cool.
+Wforacing2010 ~ or more precisely, a stripper run. And come on, its not as if anyone really believes this if for fuel do they?
This video is 9 years old ....are they still in business??
That ain't how Popcorn made his damn likker... You guys are like rocket scientists.

What does it take to get a permit?
Is it left handed?
@dreamssofblue and what would you run the generator off?! 10l of deisel to make 1l of ethanol. clever
How are the "heads" collected? wouldn't they reflux back into the boiler?
Selsley01 Good info. Since everything is being condensed do you just go by taste to know when the heads are past?
hey i would like to buy one of these but wouldn't mind actually picking one up in person..pay with cash. I live in pa so im guessing it about a 10 hour drive. just wondering if something like this is possible....I will be off work until next monday

just take out , or don't run the deflagamator.

Thumbs up if you came to see a musical moonshine flute!
Yeah, every ball valve ever made from every factory needs the packing nut tightened down when installed. Especially when the valve was soldered on rather than screwed on.
WTF I wanted this to be a musical instrument of some kind!
Your phone is ringin', dude
used mirrors to heat our tank with the sun. Sun + mirrors = high heat . just something to think about.
I imagine that the ethanol permit is just so he can distill legally. Since he is making fuel he doesn't have to pay liquor taxes.

nothing new been going on for a century
No you can not make personal consumption you can make it for fuel with the right permits
Agree with Morganman1975, get the audio squared away. Rest of the video was great ..... that I could hear. Good thing I'm a visual learner.
This is totally professional fuel grade system cost 12k before you get excited like i did. Very nice if you got the bucks. Is the same system design they use in hvy industry. That is how i ended up here...so this is the top model i would guess for the pocket home unit.
can you save the tails and put it in the next boiler run when making ethanol for fuel.
I always keep my fuel in quart Mason jars!!
great video wanted more info on tails and headers though for avoiding methanol
+Nathan Asphyxia Right around the first 50 ml of a run is what is known as the "headers" which should be thrown away. You can distinguish the tails from the heart by the taste. Caleb Blakeley thank you!

There is no exact measurement to tell you when you have finished with the foreshots, heads, hearts, or tails. The best way is to use taste and smell. To say the first 50ml is incorrect
what kind of tastes and odors will the methanol imbibe on the liquor?
hick pride! haha :D
Me want this !!!
So the only reason I have the illusion of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is because I'm allowed it.....that still sucks.
Why do you need permission (permit) to make your own fuel? I thought I heard some where about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness....could have swore I heard that somewhere ...hmm.
i hope that aint lead solder you used. wouldnt want yer motor to get lead poison
I'm so glad the government has outlawed making ethanol unless you ask them for permission and pay them. Sigh.
