    The small screen was added in post production. He was actually having a cup of tea and a cigarette with his right hand.

    The thing with Tom is that He knows A LOT of theory and practice. He became so free with the fret board, that He can change directions in a fly, modulating and adapting. Consequently, as I can read in some comments, some people feel that is less pleasant or musical than a melodic pattern that we can relate. It can feel for some like there is not enough feeling. In fact, your brain is not accustomed with the dynamic that He can put in any scale or connecting different ones. He is at a pick and climbing up even more. All technique should be effortless with the right practice. He did it. He is awesome. Way better than a lot of the shredders with a lot of speed, but not even close to the freedom that Tom has building his scales.

    • @DaveDexterMusic
      @DaveDexterMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Alternative opinion: it's great playing but if people don't find it musical then it's not the fault of their brain. Some people simply don't enjoy the tonality. There's plenty of music that I don't understand, or didn't understand at one point, that I still found beautiful without any idea of what was being accomplished.

      Ivan Carlos Santiago Yeah, it's like with Picasso. He could shit on a canvas and if you said.. WTF! This is shit. There'd be someone there to tell you that you just don't get it. Uhhh. It's a form of expression which speaks (and smells) to your inner soul. A masterpiece of a statement which transcends the everyday norm!! This sucks!

      Someone said that Coltrain couldn't play because of he was too much ahead for the time. Tom is and doesn't want to be for everyone. Govan in this is much more "clever" (in italy we say "paraculo") because he tries to be more "public oriented" with his "tricks" and melodic phrases!

    Just an opinion. This guy is very, very special and I've been listening to the best all my horribly long life; forget the chops, everybody's had that for years, usually hammering out the same dorian cliches we've all been using since 'Kind of Blue' only in 16ths at 240bpm. This guy's different, because of note choice, their non- sequential dynamic, time variation, implying other harmony and all in perfect time; just very, very, musical. Most shredding doesn't move me at all, Parker/Adderly/Farlow etcetc played just as fast AND over moving harmony that you had to make, but this guy's all that and as emotive as Albert King, and that's really something. For me.

    There shouldn't be any criticism at all on this video. Some people say they see this video and they just want to quit,but it should be used as inspiration to try harder. I'm a decent player,never had lessons, all by ear, no training, and he's on another level than I am, and I'm OK with that because Tom has obviously put in the work and time to be as amazing as he is, it's only our own fault if we don't take the time and put in the hard work it takes to be better than we are. Remember, there was a time when even Tom, or anyone else this good , thought like some of us, but they didn't quit, and in not quitting, they put in all it took, and look at them now. We all can do it too, we just have to work hard at it. Tom, you're amazing. Thanks for inspiring

    Plenty to take out of Tom's playing for me in his note selection though. Great attention to the melodic possibilities of each chord, using different scale flavors and chromatic runs.
