They were actually slightly bigger than a wolf, standing 4 to 4.5 feet tall and 9 to 11 feet long, at least the Yale specimen and the Harvard Specimen. Which is about the size they look here ;)
To be fair. The size of these raptors are closer to the size of the Dakota and Utah Raptors. They can stand at up to 5-7 and maybe about 12-16 feet long These raptors could easily look a person in the eye. Deinonychus was slightly bigger than a wolf.
The decision to make them puff-up their plumage instead of snarling was a great choice, a lot of birds and reptiles don't usually have the facial muscles to do so and it's more of a mammalian trait anyway. Also love how well they (almost) blend into the scene, you got the lighting and camera movement perfectly.

Came out awesome! I appreciate you basing it on enlarged Deinonychus. Most folks just compare the movies ones directly to Velociraptor mongoliensis, despite that not being the species that inspired the movie version. You even acknowledged Greg Paul's book, the one Michael Crichton used as reference, which instead called them Velociraptor antirrhopus! For those unaware, that book also anticipated the future discovery/identification of larger Dromaeosaur species (like Dakotaraptor or Achillobator), which is what inspired Crichton's larger Deinonychus. Really great work here, very good lighting matches too.
This instilled in me the exact same terror I felt the first time watching this movie. There’s something so intimidating about how these are real bird like animals stalking you. This was absolutely worth the wait, phenomenal job, Coolio!
Love how even the movements were made more twitchy like that of birds. The lighting, the plumage itself and how it puffs and moves and everything else is incredible! And what a great design. This is so cool
It’s an incredibly small detail, but I LOVE the feathers on the top of the deino’s head flaring up like those on cockatoos do when they’re interested in something. I’ve always interpreted it as their equivalent of raised eyebrows. Update: after watching this for like the tenth time, I realized that their eyes also pin (their pupils constrict) when they’re see something interesting! Also I love their darker feathers, they remind me of crows, birds that are known for their intelligence.
I love how their head movements have been changed to be jerky and stiff like a bird’s. It makes them feel a lot less like movie monsters that emote like humans and more like living, breathing animals.
god this is incredible! i adore all the little bird-y details you threw in as well- the eye pinning, the feathers fluffing up, the chirruping/"purring" noises they make. im obsessed and im going to show all my animal nerd friends immediately.
been following this project since the beginning, can't imagine how satisfying it must be to have it all come to fruition after all this time. phenomenal work!
Birds are scary, Geese are terrifying. Raptors are paralyzing! (I love who you handled the eyes on this project. The eyes just whisper murder by looking at them)
The CGI is really good. Blend in seamlessly. I like the choice of eye color and their movement, I always imagine them move more like a bird, the little head tilt movement to show their curiosity of the surrounding. Overall a really good remake of the iconic scene from Jurassic Park.
Damn, this is so smooth and cool that the algorithm decided to bless this video with a notification in my inbox for a channel that I've never watched only hours after it released. Great work!
The slightly erratic head movements mimicking modern birds is eerily realistic. Also the detail of one using its mouth to open the door instead of incorrectly positioned fingers was a nice touch.
This is incredible. I've wanted somebody to do updated JP dinosaurs and you've nailed it. The integration into the scene and replacement of the original CG/puppets is nearly seamless, especially impressive on the shots with a lot of camera movement. I appreciate the Texas switch at 2:14, where thr new CG wings pan down to the original puppet feet.
Universal should really hire you to revamp the original Jurassic Park film cause this is amazing, like you managed to somehow use your 3D models of Deinonychus and make em actually fit within the film without having these Jaguar sized birds stick out like a sore thumb. I give this a 9.5/10!
I've been following this project for a long time now and I gotta say, everything is so well done! The way the animals are animated, how they look, the work to get them into the environment, the lighting, everything is beautiful! My favourite detail you added is how the feathers move. Like how they puff up when they're agitated or ready to pounce. Even the pupils dilating when they're trying to look at something. Great job!
Probably the best looking accurate raptors I’ve seen editing into Jurassic park. If they look like this or at least similar to this. They would be terrifying. Fantastic job on the rendering and animations.
These are the best dromaeosaurs I’ve ever seen put to screen in my entire life outside of prehistoric planet. Absolutely well done, this is stunning in every way, and I would hire you on the spot if I were a filmmaker looking for effects and CGI artists
I remember seeing the first shots of this! It turned out incredible. The pinning pupils and the feathers standing up add so much. Also a huge fan of the head movements being just a liiiittle more twitchy and bird-like than the original.
A podcast I watch regularly said that feather dinosaurs in the Jurassic series would just as if not scarier than the typical reptilian ones and I disagreed. This video proved me otherwise, thank you
You have no idea how happy this made me to watch. The jerky movements are very fitting. Whether that was deliberate or just a result of embedding your models into a live scene is irrelevant because it works so well. I’d watch every dino scene with realistic models if you made them. Also, I’ve seen a still image on Pinterest of these raptor models in the JP kitchen a long time ago. I always wondered who made this. Glad to finally come across your video.
The subtleties are what really sell this SO WELL. Opening the door with the moith because they couldn't move their hands the old way. The jerky, bobbing head movements like an inquisitive bird. When the one jumps on the counter, there is arm flapping to steady itself.
Absolutely awesome! Incredible job matching the lighting of the scenes and the compositing must have been a nightmare, especially with all those pots and pans! The movements of the Deinonychus were really well done too. Great mix of avian and reptilian tendencies. Super smart to keep the CUs with the feet the same, that way you still have the animatronic feel in some shots.
I’ve been following your progress on Twitter, good LORD it looks incredible!! The only thing I love more about the raptors is the detail the deinonychus opens the door with his mouth instead of his hand, I also love the movements being more bird like! AWEOME JOB!
Ngl, the TikTok text to speech for Deinonychus broke my immersion a bit. This is truly magnificent work! While not how I would’ve handled the design of the animal, this is some excellent compositing work. You nailed mimicking the lighting from the scene, and your animation is on point. Bravo!!!!
Wow, this looks phenomenal! The CGI is better than the original! You should consider remastering the rest of the movie, so it's scientifically accurate. I know longtime fans of the franchise, like myself, would absolutely love to experience a more true-to-nature version of the film. Apart from the dinosaurs' appearances, you could even edit in a few lines of dialogue that would explain why the Jurassic Park tyrannosaurus can only detect prey that's moving. In the original book, the reason was because of the amphibian DNA that was used to fill in the gaps of the dinosaurs' gene sequences. The vision of frogs is based on movement. Someone with the proper editorial skill set could change Dr. Grant's dialogue about raptor's at the beginning of the film, so he doesn't mention T-rex'a vision, and then add a line in "Mr. DNA's" presentation that references how the frog DNA altered the eyesight of certain species. You could crowdfund the project, if it's too much work to do for free. If happily pay money to see a remastered version of the film!
I absolutely love the little subtle changes you made with how the Raptors interacted with the environment, from how the first one opens the door with its mouth instead of its hand (they were incapable of pronating their wrists) to how to nudged the ladle instead of licking it due to having a stiff tongue. The way you also had changed their body language with feather ruffles, dilating pupils and head bops shows you really did your research into how they would've most likely behaved in life, and how attentive you were into getting it all just right. Keep up the good work with more like this!
Honestly, with how they were animated more closely to birds with their jerky head movements showing how fast they could be, the feathers flaring up to emote, and the eagle eyes looking at you, it makes them more terrifying if they're still around.
Amazing that we can now do something as a hobby on our home computers that once took teams of special effects artists using the most expensive workstations available months to achieve. Incredible work.
been following this on and off over the years, so happy its finished!! and holy fucking shit those birds are horrifying 😭 the way you used the lighting was masterful, amazing work!
I think one of the things that makes this feel so much more real is that replacing almost all the shots with cgi gets rid of the disconnect in mobility and fidelity between the original practical and cgi parts. This feels so much more consistent and immersive.

THE EYE PINNING IS SO GOOD. i dont think ive seen that before, really clever. the way the head feathers fluff up... wow you killed this.
Wait the animation is actually so good. Obviously I've never seen a live raptor, but I love how they're more birdlike in their movements.
I love how their head movements have been changed to be jerky and stiff like a bird’s. It makes them feel a lot less like movie monsters that emote like humans and more like living, breathing animals.
I absolutely love the bird-like head movements! It really makes Dinosaurs feel like the missing link between reptiles and birds.
god this is incredible! i adore all the little bird-y details you threw in as well- the eye pinning, the feathers fluffing up, the chirruping/"purring" noises they make. im obsessed and im going to show all my animal nerd friends immediately.
been following this project since the beginning, can't imagine how satisfying it must be to have it all come to fruition after all this time. phenomenal work!
“ It’s a DEINONYCHUS” I almost choked 😂
Birds are scary, Geese are terrifying. Raptors are paralyzing!
(I love who you handled the eyes on this project. The eyes just whisper murder by looking at them)
This is by far the best version of accurate dinosaurs being placed in the original film that I've ever seen. Hope you make more of this.
What?
@@evolution3138 Ironic that the first feathered dinosaur was discovered in Germany!
Jfc dude this came out really well
Bot
This is incredible. I've wanted somebody to do updated JP dinosaurs and you've nailed it. The integration into the scene and replacement of the original CG/puppets is nearly seamless, especially impressive on the shots with a lot of camera movement. I appreciate the Texas switch at 2:14, where thr new CG wings pan down to the original puppet feet.
0:27 Staring one of these raptors in the face would be kinda terrifying.
Ya think
Real ones were tiny. Why the text speech to change the name to the bigger ones
Damn you dissappear for 2 years and come back with this masterpiece?! What a great Christmas present this was ❤🦕🦖😊
Seeing the build up on twitter to finally seeing it complete was SO worth it. Good work my dude!
I love how you animated them. Some scenes it looks like it’s really there and other scenes it looks like the suit the actors would wear.
Universal should really hire you to revamp the original Jurassic Park film cause this is amazing, like you managed to somehow use your 3D models of Deinonychus and make em actually fit within the film without having these Jaguar sized birds stick out like a sore thumb. I give this a 9.5/10!
@matthewpastrikos7383 probably but can't blame Spielberg for inaccuracy that's all they had to work with 30 years ago.
Dude, you outdid yourself!
The lighting, the movements, the rendering and the compositing are all fantastic. Super convincing! Amazing work!
This deserves WAY more likes and also i love how the raptors move like birds
bro this is amazing, spot on!!
3:15 is my favorite scene. The pupal expanding then contracting onto Lex is such a predatory thing.
This video proved me otherwise, thank you
Dude, well done. This is legit even scarier.
Niceeeeeeee
That was insanely well done.
Now those are scary ass looking birds.😮
Absolutely awesome! Incredible job matching the lighting of the scenes and the compositing must have been a nightmare, especially with all those pots and pans! The movements of the Deinonychus were really well done too. Great mix of avian and reptilian tendencies. Super smart to keep the CUs with the feet the same, that way you still have the animatronic feel in some shots.
The modeling and animation were pretty darn close to perfect on their own, but that lighting match really makes this incredible.
I just love how you managed to replicate both the CGI from the movies and the Animatronics. This is honestly beautiful!!!
Bravo!!!!
damn dude the editing is top notch
I am completely blown away. This is phenomenal! My wish to see an accurate design in this scene has been fulfilled.
That looks really good, and I liked the part where the Deinonychus used its mouth to open the door instead of its hands.
I've seen other people do this yet NONE of them pull it off as seamless and convincing as this. Absolutely fantastic!!
This is incredible! I loved how the bird-like movements made them so sinister.
Honestly, with how they were animated more closely to birds with their jerky head movements showing how fast they could be, the feathers flaring up to emote, and the eagle eyes looking at you, it makes them more terrifying if they're still around.
I like the change that it used its mouth to turn the handle, since it wouldn't have been able to turn its wrists that way.
3:26 I _still_ can't watch this scene without imagining Zach Hadel screaming "AAOOOUUGG!"
you have no idea how much i’ve been looking forward to this. it looks so good
Amazing that we can now do something as a hobby on our home computers that once took teams of special effects artists using the most expensive workstations available months to achieve. Incredible work.
Absolutely phenomenal animation! Thank you so much for putting the time into making this :)
WOW!!! This animation is AMAZING!!! I’ve never seen better!!! Well done!
been following this on and off over the years, so happy its finished!! and holy fucking shit those birds are horrifying 😭 the way you used the lighting was masterful, amazing work!
Oh my god coolioart, these models are absolutely amazing. I love the dark colours you gave them as it reminds me of crows and ravens.
Yeah, unironically, I think it kinda looks better than the original.
I think one of the things that makes this feel so much more real is that replacing almost all the shots with cgi gets rid of the disconnect in mobility and fidelity between the original practical and cgi parts. This feels so much more consistent and immersive.
Actually scarier than the original
You did an incredible job with this! It makes the scene even scarier.
This is almost scarier tbh especially those eyes
i love love love how their movements are more jerky. so good.
3:14 *Perfect imitation of my Amazon parrot (RIP) when he was pissed: constricted pupils and raised feathers.*
CoolioArt must have spent time around parrots. I never doubted feathered raptors could be both cool and scary. Anyone who's spent time around birds could tell you that. Birds of prey, parrots, corvids, cassowaries: birds are a diverse group and some of them are absolutely terrifying even today.
Another L for the "feathered dinosaurs arent scary" crowd
