My first time listening or reading a Bond book after years of dedication to the movies. My first observation is that Bond is far more nuanced and complicated than the character in the movies. More than just a “blunt instrument.”
You have to read the novels. Ian Flemings character is completely different than the movies. He is actually far more interesting in the 14 novels. They are a great read.
Very true. Books are always far more interesting than a 2-hour movie. Amazing how screenwriters condense complex book subject. Some good, some not so good. Bond is trapped in time post WW2, a commando mind set, cold war warrior. @@ballboybatson9540
Thanks for sharing Wonderful narration Dr No is my favorite 007 book along with Goldfinger Sean Connery is my favorite Bond, and the only one in my humble opinion ❤
Thoroughly enjoying this reading, the narrator is exceptional, bringing life to the book. I haven't seen the movie which probably is a good thing as movies often deviate from the book and this is perfect.
I read all the ian Fleming books( 007 goes on after Ian) and seen all the movies it's really crazy how the movies follow the books down to smallest details
@@phoenix_by_name I finished all of the books that Ian Fleming wrote. And I watched all of the movies in chronological order. I still have the Casino Royale comedy to watch.
As for the Jamaican accent..?!?! Cringe..!! Fleming COULD do action scenes fairly well but his characters are 100% cardboard. As for Bond : the book version comes across as a humourless prig !!
@@texleeger8973 without using google translate I'd say that's "death to spies" in russian. In casino royale le chiffre's assassin cuts that "W" letter in his hand to mark "spy"
Fleming at his most inventive. Marvellous villain and well-plotted story. The passages about Honeychile are hilarious in places but it does blend in with the overall story. Racial undertones throughout of course, with the author having a poke at the snobbery and upper-class snoots that were prevalent amongst the ex-pats of 50s Jamaica. The narration was excellent, although I do wish they would use a female reader for the girl's dialogue!
I always chuckle when fans complain that the films were too fantastic and " unrealistic"As if the novels were grounded in reality and 'serious' thrillers
Milton is a sterilizing fluid. First used in World War 1 to treat burns, I think. Used as an antiseptic, Milton now sell various antibacterial wipes, sprays and gels.
Some things I like better than the film, the centipede can actually kill Bond (not a tarantula), the obstacle course to tests Bond's will, fight w/ squid, and Dr. No's death
These books are very written and Vance's performance is perfectly accurate. I hated the last movie where they killed off Bond who just stood on a roof and let the missiles kill him. Then they turned Q into a Queer and MoneyPenny into a black woman who acts likes a 00 and not M's secretary. If they go woke and make Bond a black lesbian, then James Bond is truly dead.
For those who don't know the author served MI-6 or SAS or whatever Secret Service ancillaries existed in WWII. Yes, the author was a British spy. He often smoked a pipe, as the Brits love to do.

I fell madly in love with the extensive back story of Dr. No. A whole spinoff can form with even a series😍. Thanks for the book.
"My odds are one in a million. My heart is on the right side."
Yep, he's an amazing character, no doubt.
Found this one week ago and I'm already on my third listen of this marvelous novel. Just as interesting as it was the first time
Thanks for sharing

Good book, first time I've listened to a bond book. I kept picturing Sean Connery!
I love the way the Narrator voices HoneyRider like a Welsh girl from the valleys.
Yes, that's what I got as well.
I still enjoyed the narration though in spite of that.

I read a Fleming novel back in the sixties and didn't like it much. This, I like.
Narration very good . Apart from his version of ' M ' ..
He makes him sound like my 80 year old Great Aunt . M was
a Naval Officer - a Vice Admiral !!

Ah i haven't read this book since 2007, such a different perspective that your mind can imagine compared to the films.
Near the end, when Honeychile is tending Bond’s wounds, something called Milton is applied to his skin. Anyone know what that is?
