A failed piston rod, crosshead, or conrod would give rise to the loud bangs heard, the valvegear would still be working and supplying steam to cylinder till the regulator was shut, the loud bangs were most likely the now uncheck piston hitting both cylinder end covers, this would also give rise to very sharp exhaust beats, assuming this there would be 2 bangs per wheel revolution, the driver would have had his hand on the regulator as the loco was climbing a gradient in readiness to catch the loco if it lost its feet. The crosshead design adopted for the britts, 9fs, bullieds and a good few others would allow the conrod to drop to track level and lead to a potentially very bad situation.
I was on that, so glad to have found this video. I knew all was not well as soon as I heard the banging and the brakes were applied with some enthusiasm...
Wow, that noise at the end sounded expensive. Hope there was not too much damage done to the engine, it had sounded in fine form all day. Thank you for some first-class filming, always welcome to us exiles!.
At 6:25 you can hear that the piston rod had snapped! Obviously kept it going for a good few seconds before the loud banging and the regulator was shut off!
That is the best low-light footage I've ever seen on a steam video, just fantastic quality at every location. May I ask what camera you are using? it's amazing!
I'm guessing that you didn't let "auto exposure" have it's way during the low light segment. The amount of under exposure is brilliant. Do you know yet what failed on the engine?
My father told me of a connecting rod he saw still sticking out of the ballast as his train was entering a tunnel. The track had obviously been straightened since the occurrence but why leave the rod still there?
I am as old as Britannia - as a spotter remember its latter days out of 12A Kingmoor. It was mechanically a mess and there were others of the class in far better condition. By the mid 60s they were mostly on parcels and Carlisle to Crewe stoppers. The chime whistle heard on this video is exactly as I remember it. It looked in good running order but, the coal - it appeared pretty black from the chimney early on. Hope its ok - likely to cost a lot to fix.
I would have kept the Brits in BR Stock for the time that was planned, but run them on the S&D and Great Central while electrifying / diesel to West Coast / East Coast and Liv St Services. GC would have been a straightforward run for them and S&D for freight better than the costly double headers
@@MichaelSmith-wj8zb Don't hold your breath, these things are not available "off the shelf". If a new one is cast there will be considerable work involved to get the right type of steel identified and availability ascertained. A pattern will have to be made and once a new one cast it then has to be machined, not a quick process. Then it will have to undergo stringent NDT work all under the auspices of the relevant engineering acceptance body for the loco to ensure the casting and machining is sound. It may be possible to use one from another loco that is comparable size wise but if the donor loco is not mainline approved then the part may have to be assessed and approved by the engineering acceptance body before it could be used. All this and then there is the small issue of...........cost! I very much doubt it will be a quick turn around, sadly. It is one of my favourite classes.

It's there for a number of reasons, including recovery. But a major reason is that very few sites have turntables any more, so you want something to pull the train any time it needs to reverse. A common pattern down my way is to run steam first to, say, Weymouth, then diesel first up to Yeovil where there's a turntable, and they can then run around and go out steam-first again.
@@hoagy_ytfc Diesel haul out of Weymouth is only partially as you reason. A recent trip (pulled by Bahamas) was planned to have an additional steam loco on the front climbing the bank out and use the train engine as a banker (tender first, obviously). However, even with the more recent wet weather, it was deemed too much of a fire risk and the diesel hauled the train to Southampton, where the train reversed and the steam loco once again led. We were on the train and (having done a lot of steam trips) were quite surprised by the amount and size of the cinders hitting the top window deflectors of the Mk1 and bouncing onto the tablecloth, some 10mm diameter, over much of the trip whenever the loco was working hard. And we were halfway down the train length. Maybe BR's late change to double blastpipe and chimney contributed to the amount (and so risk) for this specific loco, maybe the poorer coal now an issue, maybe both, but it did (sadly) look like the right call, and we were robbed of the experience.
As a complete novice in these matters, it struck me that the grand old lady was pulling far too much weight. So many carriages may have been fine in her youth, but today……..(though thank goodness for the diesel at the back - sadly)

What a heart wrenching sound.. That's for sure. Glad everyone was safe following that. besides that point, what STUNNING FOOTAGE!!!
Great footage! That was a gut-wrenching sound at the end of the final clip though
Excellent video. As devastating as it is to hear a loco "break" it was impressive!

Listened to it again, that banging sounded bad like a rod off?!😢😢

Absolutely brilliant footage mate apparently it was a shopping trolley on the line that she hit damaging her piston rods😢
This seems unlikely given the rural location with no shops using trolleys within miles.
nothing to do with a shopping trolley. Absolute rubbish

Yes it was a broken Crosshead.
Hope it'll fixable, up until that point she was doing brilliantly. Lovely sound and whistles. Come back soon Britty 😢😊

A danger of a con rod breaking is it digging into the rail ballast lifting the loco up or further bending it round.
My father told me of a connecting rod he saw still sticking out of the ballast as his train was entering a tunnel. The track had obviously been straightened since the occurrence but why leave the rod still there?
Yes, unfortunate..
You can only guess at how many times 'the train motion' has revolved since starting out on the railways..
🤔🤔🤔
Did the loco fail in the area where Jessies Seat topiary commemorates a railway accident way back on 29th February 1892, a leap year.

About 6:27 is that other sound, the sound of the cross head failing?
Fracturing a cross head would require a lot of force. More likely a machining or design defect.
You must be an Engineer?
There was a hidden flaw and internal crack in the metal.
