  • Third episode of my good bye (or see you!...) to very-good gear I've owned but I realized is not for me at this moment.
    Today is my monophonic partner during pandemic, mi Moog Subsequent 37 (or Sub37).
    It's an incredible machine with lots of features for a "simple" mono(para)phonic synth, but I love to play with two hands and chords. For that I've changed it by his big mother: Matriarch.
    In this video I played some arpeggios, slow pads and some noises, all well together with Hologram Microcosm ambient pedal and Strymon Volante delay and, later in the video, Meet Maude Delay and some reverb from Valhalla.
    I'm going to miss it for sure, but it's time to make some room.

    I've almost sold my Sub 37 about 1,001 times... but when I hear that Duo Mode, and hear it dominate a bassline... I just can't let it go. I bought a Minimoog Model D to "upgrade" from my Sub 37... many years later, I still have both. There's just something about the Sub 37.. no matter how many fancy new synths come out, it just has this powerful and fat sound that fits certain contexts perfectly.

    • @CaidicusProductions
      @CaidicusProductions ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I own a Moog Voyager XL and I know what you mean, there's just something about the Sub 37 that stands apart from so many other synths, including so many other Moogs. I love my Voyager, but I definitely have a bit of jealousy (perhaps not the right word, it's not a resentful feeling, just a "this is much fatter than my Voyager" feeling) when I hear the Subsequent 37.
      It truly is a fantastic synth. It also looks gorgeous. I'm a huge "I'd own it just for the looks" lover of synths, as well. The Sub 37 has that "just run your fingers over me, click all my buttons, turn my smooth knobs, look at me over and over and gleefully exclaim 'Holy @#$%, this is MY synth!'" aesthetic to it.
      It's just an all-around stellar work of craftsmanship.

      @@CaidicusProductions The Duo Mode alone is enough to make this synth a legend. Nothing sounds like it. The way the oscillators force their way into the filter is very different than any other (i think because there are overdrive stages caked into the mixer, and then you ALSO have the multidrive available).. it's just the richest sound i ever heard.
      Every time I ever consider selling it, I play Duo Mode and then say "oops, never mind!" :P

      A model D is a downgrade right? The sub37 is a modern super mono. Well ok, that was a bit daring… model D is top quality. But it’s very limited.

    • @auxorion
      @auxorion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscarvanderburgh9915 Model D is probably the best sounding I have, or ever will, played. It has such an "alive" sound in so many ways. There's nothing like it for sure. It's like the perfect mono synth, except it doesn't have complex modulation options or PWM. (Would be amazing if it had PWM). Plus, you don't have duo-mode or full envelopes.
      But when you play it in person, you just forget about all the limitations. Such a great sound.

    • @auxorion
      @auxorion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually get the desire to sell it.. there is something so un-"sexy" about it. That horrible little LCD display and menu straight out of the 90s, the basic sound of one oscillator can be a bit uninspiring, the continuous/variable waveshape makes it really annoying to try to just get a simple PWM (you have to work it out in the like 30% of the knob range.. and likely will still touch the sawtooth a bit.. it's actually a nightmare)... the knob-per-function is amazing, but all the fun modulation stuff takes a lot of "unsexy" work.. routing and futzing with knobs (of questionable resolution)...
      When I played the Grandmother in a store.. everything felt LIGHT.. IMMEDIATE.. and it automatically sounded great. I could crank up the mixer levels and get an amazing sound, or bring it down and it was just as good.. whereas the Sub 37 you have to find sweet spots even on just the mixer level (too much and it's overdriven, too little and it's quiety/noisy)... also, when you create a complex patch on the Grandmother it's very satisfying. It feels RAW and almost wildly experimental even when it's a pretty straight-forward patch.. pulling off a cable or pushing a knob by accident leaves you with a feeling like "I wonder what it will sound like" and almost always rewards you..
      By contrast, setting up a patch on the Sub 37 gives you a foreboding feeling of 'Don't touch it!!" because you worked so hard to navigate to these microscopic sweet spots to get the sound you got. Only satisfaction comes when you save it... then maybe you go a little nuts with it.
      I also find that on the Mother-32 or Grandmother/Matriarch, the sound design exploration feels open and natural, leading you to new ideas each time.. whereas on the Sub 37, the interface sort of leads you to the same kinds of sounds. Despite it being CAPABLE of making many of the same (if not even more complex) sounds.. you just don't tend to explore past the usual muscle memory patches.
      But, at the end of the day.... when you're about to sell it for that flashier, sexier new synth.. you just make that one or two go-to patches and then suddenly you realize nothing will ever sound like it. That clumsy old Sub 37 may not feel very modern (like a Pro-3 does) or very fun/exciting (like a Matriarch does) but it's when you make those typical Sub 37 sounds you know and love.. suddenly you realize that nothing will ever sound like that. And it's easy to change your mind and keep it. At least for me anyway.
      There will always be the used market... 5-10 years from now, when the dust has settled, you're going to come back to it and say "Why did I ever sell this?!!!" But for now.. I imagine tons are gonna go up for sale.
