      I just checked the website and if you go to the "mattresses" section you'll find "DIY Mattress Kit + Ticking." You then add the wool separately, which is listed in the "fabrics and wool" section. Good luck!

    I've been wanting a Home of Wool mattress for 2 years. Next March the bonus check will pay for a custom split one I'll share with hubby and baby. A few interviews Rosica gave on talk shows got me to your videos. Thank you for sharing the making process.
    One step they did after stuffing was beating the wool with a flat stick.
    Did the cost seem cheaper when making it yourself? Seems like it wouldn't be by much with the wool fill being a separate cost.

      So I made a toddler mattress three years ago by hand, like cut the fabric, stitched it, filled them etc.
      It was quite a lot of work! I did that one just as a test before I did my queen size one. I ended up finding this place called Cotton cloud in Portland or. They sold my queen for $450 and it's firm but very comfortable. It's not "organic" but the wool comes from sheep who are pastured and the grass isn't sprayed. Their food is non GMO but since they're pastured, they eat mostly grass. The cotton exterior is cotton that isn't certified organic but they don't spray. It's a nice, small quality lace and I hadn't found it cheaper. It was harder than I thought so just putting it out there! ❤

    Thanks for sharing! Will you give feedback sleeping on the 5 inch mattress vs the other one you made? both comfortable?

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both comfortable but it's hard to compare because I don't spend as much time on the 5 inch mattresses. They are in my living room as a daybed (currently frameless as I'm trying to custom make a frame) and so I lounge on them and have taken some naps on them, but not a full nights sleep. In the long term after the wool is fully compressed, the 5 inch will be not as soft as the 7 inch, but I'm not sure yet how big of a difference that is.

    How do you refill the mattress once empty? I mean once you tufted it, how can you re-fill it? Is there a hack?

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure! I probably wouldn’t entirely empty it and refill it because I think you’d probably have to tuft it all over again. I have added more wool once tufted and just spread a small amount throughout. If there is a hack, Home of Wool would know it, so you could ask them!

    • @Wolf_gate
      @Wolf_gate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HilaryBarker Thank you for your reply. That's what I thought. although since the beds have zippers I was thinking that if you needed to wash it or something, and had to re-fill it, you would probably need to re tuft it all again. For sure.

      @@Wolf_gatethese would not work for bedwetting children or other messy situations, since washing the cover is such an ideal. Make a removeable cover for it....still, I don't think there is a way to make it "waterproof" without using plastics.

    Hello! Wonderful video! After a year of use, would you share how you feel? The wool should no longer be so fluffy and the mattress itself should be firmer. Are you still comfortable? I also had one done a year and a half ago, but it seems to have gotten stiffer and my shoulders hurt. I will be glad if you share how it is with you?

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! With these particular mattresses, they are still not too firm because they aren’t used as much. For the mattress I sleep on, I agree that it became a bit too firm so I’ve put an organic latex mattress topper on it and now it’s perfect!

    • @velizaraiv3251
      @velizaraiv3251 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for the answer. By the way, I want to share what I did to solve this problem. I love the feel of the wool so much already and didn't want to replace the wool mattress but I don't have time to redo it (I made mine myself too) and I made 3 for my cousin too. She has noticed that the mattress that is surrounded on all sides with boards does not deform (split) and seems to be softer than the one that is not surrounded. So I bought some boards and upgraded my bed, now the mattress is surrounded on each side and it has really become softer. I don't have shoulder problem anymore. Maybe this type of mattress should have lateral support so that they don't destruct and stay more shaped and, accordingly, softer. Or it just happened that way for me, I still decided to share my experience ❤️

      I made a mattress out of wool from my sheep a few years ago. I used atleast 6 huge fleeces from my down wool breeds. My mattress was very very tall and fluffy. Yes mine has compacted alot but is still several inches thick. I use it in top of a camping cot. This resulted in more compacting in the center. I believe if it was used on a floor or plywood base, it would be compacted more evenly.
      However...I still love it. It is not even a box/ tufted style. My mattress actually reminds me of a basic black body bag. I'm making two more to fit a free futon frame I acquired. I cant wait! It's alot of work. Besides taking care of sheep ,washing wool takes alot of time and it does smell . That doesn't bother me, but my husband can't stand it.
      The finished clean wool once ir is totally dry, just has a very clean scent. I love it!

      @@velizaraiv3251 It’s about a year later, how is your mattress doing? Does it continue to be soft? I would love to make a wool mattress but hate to go to all this trouble and expense only to have to put a foam pad over my wool mattress, as this intrepid young lady has done.😢

    Do you have any problems with moths, weevils and other insects that feed themselves with wool?

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t, but that’s an important issue to consider! From my understanding moths can’t eat through cotton, so they wouldn’t be able to get through the cover to the wool. I also think moths (and other insects maybe?) are less likely to get at things that are out in the open as opposed to in a dark closet. Moths are also more attracted to dirty odorous wool, like a sweater you’ve been wearing and didn’t clean thoroughly, and the wool here stays nice and clean inside the case. But if you already have an insect infestation, I’d take care of that first before bringing so much wool into the home!

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing, as an extra precaution I put a few lavender sachets inside because they supposedly repel moths and other insects.

    How firm is it?

    • @HilaryBarker
      @HilaryBarker  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! It starts out medium firm to soft and then as the wool compresses over time it becomes more firm.
