I have used a Super Splitter for about 15 years now. Just love that machine. I load the wood to be split on to a trailer with my tractor bucket. This trail bed sits almost waist high. I can take large chunks off and on to the splitter with out bending over. The split wood is thrown into a dump trailer. From the dump trailer I place the split wood into a roofed wood racks that I built. The wood racks are sitting on a lift that keeps the wood at waist hight while loading, again no bending over. The wood racks are moved to a yard area so the wood in in direct contact with sun and wind. The racks are moved with the tractor using pallet forks. After about three months the racks are moved into winter storage [inside] again with the tractor. Durning the winter I move a rack as needed near my wood stoves, yes again with the tractor and no bending over.
A few years ago I moved all wood splitting into a closed building, after changing the splitter to electric power. Super Split co. sent the electric set up to me and I changed it over taking about 30 minutes.
I do not sell fire wood but only heat my house and shop. I only use 6 cords per year. I am 79 so appreciate this great splitter and not having to bend over very much. Oh all the wood comes from our own wood lot.
This is one of the most informative segments you have done, there is no one machine that will do everything we ever expect it to do, there will always be that 'one log' that will not split, no matter what set up you have.
I like the idea of stacking the split firewood on pallets to keep it dry and improve airflow. One thing I would suggest is to put landscape fabric underneath the pallets to help eliminate weed growth.
I've had my Super Split for 40 years. I converted it to an electric motor six yeaars ago. It works great! Other than a new return spring four years ago I have had zero problems with it. I split the small stuff with it and for the stuff that's too heavy to pick up, I use my new new Eastonmade 12-22.

I like your method Joe, split and stack as you go. I'm 60 years old and I know exactly what youre saying. When your done, your done. Seems the best way to me. We're almost into September yoo hoo cooler weather is coming.

I like that method as well. Split a decent pile, then get it stacked, and it's done. You are also correct about that huge pile. It's not as much as you think it is. Great video!

Great machine for the money. While my Eastonmade now carries the major load of my production it is certainly much more money than the SS. For the money though the SS can't be beat. It will put your production on a different level to where you can afford the Eastonmade
@@ohiowoodburner that's my problem im really tied between this and and the Eastonmade ultra but I'm leaning towards the super splitter because of the 1400$ savings and the availability of the ss is also a big factor
I'm impressed by how well that works. I'd like to see how it handles a 24" oak round. And I agree with your method. I used to bring the splitter to the wood where it was cut, split into the trailer, trailer to the pile. Handle the wood as little as possible. And by mixing up the tasks I don't overstressed one set of muscles.
You need a pickeroon to pick the rounds up off the ground and save your back! I use a short (maybe 3') long one and I can stick it in a round and lift most of them with one hand with little or no bending. You should try it! Great video as always

I've been able to split some pretty gnarly Ponderosa pine out here in Idaho with my SS. It takes 2-4 punches sometimes but still, it gets through it. Love this machine. Thanks for a great video on it.

I'm the same way, doing a lot of small tasks, spread them out so I can take small breaks. Makes the day go by and I'm not so tired out at end of day.
I retired my wheel barrel and picked up a couple of 1,200 lb Gorilla carts that tilt from Northern Tool, to handle the splits or debris. When the wife helps out,
at least she don't half to balance the WB while transporting 'stuff' (It's usually hooked to the JD mower). I love that Super Splitter. Thanks for the t-shirt

One thing that is a benefit with switching off jobs is that it helps the body not to get too stiff when working in the same bent over position for long periods of time. Switching things up can keep it interesting and help you stay at for longer periods of time.
I am glad you mentioned your wheelbarrow manufacturer again. Next time I am in need of one I will check them out.

Great video Joe. They are excellent machines. I wish they would come out with a log lift (even if it’s a manual lever type). The Split Second lift fits on SuperSplit, but they went out of business I believe. Cheers
Also, I utilize the same process Joe! I split it into a big wheelbarrow, stack it, repeat. I prefer that over picking up all the logs off the ground, to me it's way easier to take the logs out of the wheelbarrow to the stack
Wow....that was fun to watch.....when I read Super Splitter,,,I was wondering about the Easton Made....Then you went to work....Geeezzz this was a Whizzzz!!!! AND....Geezzz Everyone has their way of doing things AND ain't nuttin wrong bout that!!!! AND.....The youngin behind the camera does fantastic job a "SPLITTING" her time betwix the camera and school....LOL
If I had to choose between the two I would take the eastonmade but the super Splitter definitely has its place in My Wood Yard
Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. You're a brave man splitting ant infested wood dressed in shorts - I'd be wearing long trousers tied at the ankles with baler twine! I've admired the Super Split for years but they're not available over here. I always favor thin sharp wedges for their smooth operation. Another advantage of light splitters is that they can be very manoeuvrable in tight situations. I was surprised you didn't idle the machine when stacking but I suppose gas is so cheap over there you don't have to worry about the cost. I support your frequent stacking approach for a couple of reasons, not least because I think it is more efficient since there is one less touch of the wood. Otherwise, you would have to throw the logs somewhere after splitting only to lift them into the barrow later. Keep on Splitting!
The engine is kept on moderate RPMs. You don't have to max the engine on a kinetic to make it work like you would a hydro

A suggestion for workflow:
Might it be possible to stockpile the Super Splitter material on a concrete pad against a solid wall?
You could then scoop up a bucket full with the tractor loader, and present it at a nice convenient height level to the Super Splitter. That would do away with all the lifting and most of the twisting involved in getting the rounds onto the splitter.
Then, maybe, toss the splits back into the bucket as you make room in it! Drive the loader over to the stacking area and stack straight out of the bucket, again at a nice convenient height to save much lifting and twisting.
The occasional unsplit round that manages to hide in the bucket will simply make the return trip to the stockpile for the next bout.

Ivor......exactly what I do. Only I'm still using a hydraulic splitter from Northern Tools for the last 12 years. Super Splitter on my list for next year. Almost bought one this year, but knee surgery put that on hold.
Joe, it's your Woodley so you get to do it your way! But I'm right there with ya - I don't understand why so many guys want to handle the wood so often! I put my wheelbarrow next to my splitter and throw my trash right into it so I don't have so much to clean off the ground when I'm done splitting. I put my yard trailer on my lawn tractor and throw my splits into it (an Ohio Steel cart that holds a LOT of wood). When the trailer is full, I drive to the stack and stack it all up, then return to the splitter. When I'm done splitting, I am DONE! No piles of wood to stack, no big mess to clean up!

Totally agree. In this case our filming changes the way we do things sometimes. But I do use the tractor a lot for splitting

Joe do you mostly split straight grain soft maple ash with the supersplit? Wondering how it would do on sugar maple or beech with knots. How many full cord do you think you've done with the super split? Any issues? Is yours the HD model? Also how many cord or face cord do you estimate per hour with it...thx

When I was a young man at 19 years old, I got into tree service and worked for a guy that had one of these super splitters....he was behind that year and he had 70 cords of rounds cut up on the ground in clusters positioned around a pile in the center.....there was no stacking and no touching the wood multiple times....sometimes I split right into the truck, other times I threw the wood into the pile.....LET ME TELL YOU NO BULLSHIT....I SPLIT 90 CORDS OF HARDWOOD IN ONE MONTH....EVERY OTHER DAY 3 DAYS A WEEK UNTIL WE GOT CAUGHT UP.....I was in shape and strong, my boss loved me for 10.00 per hour 1999....the wood pile was about 7 feet high and 150 ft across.....this was in May and the rounds were sitting for a year or more....he was selling that wood by November and had no complaints.....I ran that wood pile on the weekends and Fridays for 2 seasons.....the price of wood varied alot depending where you were....if you were in the country it was 200 per cord delivered if you lived in Atlantic city it was 300 per cord....etc
I once told you that kinetic splitters are not available in Germany due to safety reasons. Finally I found one. :)
Doing different jobs in an production line makes absolutely sense - not necessary from the efficiency point of view but if you are working with your muscles - the change between splitting, rolling a wheel barrow and staking is a little like a small break for some muscle groups. And that makes you less tired on the end of a day. And days are shorter than you think. You can do super productive splitting until 3pm and stop - and will not finish the transport, staking or piling and cleaning and all necessary before 7 or 9pm.
I like small batching it too. You don't burn out doing one thing.. saves my back from the repitition
I like those wheelbarrows with the 2 wheels up front. Saves my back from the balance act of a single wheel
Turn your wheelbarrow into a 2 wheelbarrow it is great (and cheap) for heavy loads. The log splitters are great cheers.

This splitter is fantastic been using for years and it will split knotty hard maple or yellow birch . I also install 14 inch wheels instead of the small wheels it come with and make the front leg higher to match ,make it higher and not so hard on the back. I’ve had 12 of these so far and split thousands of cords
Always use the best tool for the job at the right place to do the job. You seem to have a solid handle on that. The only change I see is maybe use a two wheel wheelbarrow
That splitter does a great job. Do you have the HD model with the extra wide table or is that the 5.5 HP model? Thanks! Love the channel.
For your canopy, I would suggest getting some cheap 5 gallon buckets filled up about 1/4 of the way with sand. You can place the canopy feet in the bucket, give it a quick shake to set them in the sand. That should do an ok job of anchoring it.
Great video! Love my kenetic log splitter (I have a DR K28 Pro). I'm old and have a bad back so I also have a hydraulic log splitter which is used in the vertical position to split very large rounds into fourths which is much easier to pick up and load into the kenetic splitter.

The right tool for the right job. Does the kinetic splitter get more wear and tear than the hydraulic splitters? Seems like a more violent action on the parts
I do just the same as you Joe so don’t let anyone one tell you what and how todo things, do what you do. And I am thinking on getting a super spit my self, but my 22ton forest king still stars one one pull and I bought that in 2012 so all good there. 🥸

Your right Joe. Some guys are so negative if a machine doesn't work perfectly on everything. The reality is that evey machine has it's limitations, even on the biggest and baddest machines out there.

Of course a processor is more efficient but nothing Can remplace the manual contact with wood. That is the Real pleasure when you are doing firewood.
I will agree with you until you hit about 50 cords a year then it becomes "production." Things need to start changing around that qty.

I bought a DR K28 hoping that it would be as good as the Super Splitter, but I unfortunately had to sell it. I kept having issues with the splitter not being able to push through the wood if there was the slightest little knot in it. It worked perfectly fine, and FAST, if the wood was straight as an arrow and knot free though. I'd like to try the Super Splitter someday since it is the original! My next investment is going to be the Eastonmade Ultra, power of hydraulics with close to the speed of kinetic
That's nice performance and well built. But the distance seems so short that it would eliminate bigger rounds?
I do the same style of splitting and stacking for the same reason as you. I just finished stacking a 3 cord pile of wood last week. And I split it 2 months ago at the beginning of summer. I did that cause I thought I had someone else lined up to stack up. I pull a trailer with my atv up to the splitter and I can load it up with a face cord of wood and then I just stack that up. I also don't like doing the same thing for hours and hours and hours.
I'm with you I have to split and stack it when I get a wheelbarrow load or I'll split it from my 5x8 utility trailer and throw it back on the trailer then stack it less bending over. Work smarter not harder.

Which part of the ram's stroke is the most powerful? Is there any significant difference between the beginning and the end of the stroke?
Anyone have any experience using the super splitter on wood that has lots of “nots” and/or the pieces where the branches met the main part of the tree? Those are usually the toughest pieces to split

I purchased a Model J Super Split in Aug 2019, it has from the very beginning been the biggest pain in the butt, Ive had moments when it seams to work just fine...but the biggest amount of time, I have big regrets buying it.
That is unfortunate to hear FPN. I have found keeping the top beam clean and the top bearing lubed makes things work good.

Great video. I've been looking into getting one of these units myself for my firewood business. Is that the original, heavy duty, or special edition model? Also, does your unit have the standard production table or extra wide production table?
This is the J Model with the standard production table. IMO it is all you need. The HD I would think would be too heavy and the splitting force is not needed.
If you push down on the super splitter lever will it retract before reaching the end of its stroke? One wrong placement of a glove or anything and you're toast.
It will. Also you can do that if the log doesnt split
Ran my SS last night to re-split a load of birch that had been thru a processor. Guarantee there is not a faster machine for the task.

Option 4, use the tractor to move the Axis to ant land and split into the ATV dump trailer. Less lifting of the log rounds.

You always have a great reason for methods, so why is the bottom of the atv trailer loaded with bits and slash ?

My Super Split is working great after many years and a few hundred cords. No breakdowns and very little maintenance.

Hey Joe just wondering is the 2 years for oak drying because of the weather up North. Here in NC if its split in the winter its ready in the fall or early winter next season. The summer heat and sun here dries the crap out of Firewood fairly quickly.

i was wrong , they good size bits , its the camera angle or view , bloody cameras never quite show everything quite right , all good anyway , i have a 34 ton forestwest kinetic wood splitter , its a great machine , i had a 30 ton hydraulic splitter , but that was to slow , super strong and goes through anything , but just to slow and boring , i dont want to waste the bit of life i have got left at my age waiting for the splitter , kinetic splitter just so fast , splits almost anything well worth the money , very fuel efficient as well , gave the hydraulic one to someone that needed it
If I get a stick with ants in it I just bust it open as normal with the splitter and toss it face up on top of a stack. The birds will get all the ants in a very short time

Hi Joe… I’m a novice compared to you but think about getting a LogOx to lift those logs onto the splitter. Also, you might consider loading your pickup with the wood instead of a wheel barrel. What do you think? I’m going to look into the Super Splitter.

You should look at a mason cart or a block cart . They can carry more than a wheelbarrow..
It seems the wheelbarrow is a good size to split this amount before I take a break to split.
