That's a great looking and operating kinetic splitter. I agree the higher table height makes things convenient for easy offloading to your pickup truck or trailer. It also makes things easier on the back from not having to bend over as much. I will say this splitter handled the elm as well as any other splitter did.

Good morning B. I agree - I did enjoy using the higher table. Had to lift the rounds up a bit higher but it was a good working height. Have a great week B!

    Good afternoon GP.
The splitter did a pretty good job. Yes Elm is nasty stuff.
We don't have much here it was mostly killed off back in the early 60s here. But I have burned some over the years.
I burn mostly red oak and white oak and maple.
    Have a great evening.
    Stay safe.
    Cheers.

Splitfire and a few other brands make tractor and skidsteer log splitters that use the hydraulics of the tractor to split logs. You no longer have to get off the tractor to split the wood, you just drive up to the wood, pinch it into the attachment, then split it all from the seat of the tractor/skidsteer...

Bucken Billy Ray used his kinetic splitter last week. This is rare for him not to axe split. His splitter looked to be the same manufacturer but a different brand. His also didn't seem to have any two hand interlock. It scared me to think that in one moment of inattention you could loose fingers or a hand. I hate to think of the stupid moves I have made in the past and consider myself lucky not to been hurt or killed. Thank goodness for those looking out for our on good even when we grumble about it. Thanks always for the video (thank you Farmer's Equipment). Take care and be safe.

Excellent video. I have used the DR version of the kinetic splitter for years and my older version does not have the two handed safety feature like this one and it seems like a valuable feature and well thought out in operation. I frequently let my splitter just push the split pieces off the end into the truck or wheelbarrow to haul it off. Saves the delay time in processing the next log. Here's a tip: If a round doesn't split all the way, you can rotate it 90 degrees and split it again and it will usually come out in four pieces the next time. It's possible to send another straight after it but I seldom do. I like the Oregon motor. Very easy to start. There are a few things that will be difficult to split like "Y's" or crotch wood and Sweet Gum. I try not to stress the machine with these and just split them on my Oregon hydraulic splitter later. Thank you very much for your video!

Looks like you need a hatchet when splitting elm to deal with the strings. Also need a bucket for the general splinters so you can save them for kindling.
Some of the plastic wedges might help to keep the logs stable as you split them using the wedges to hold the log since you can't hold with one hand as the ram starts moving.

Man, green elm is my least favorite to split !! The good thing though about a hydraulic is you can stop the ram and allow it to hold the piece while you wrest the stringy hangers-on away. But still, that Kinetic splitter IS impressive. Roger showed that in his videos as well. Don't you just love that ripping, groaning and sometimes squealing sound of wood being ripped apart !! Even sweeter than birds chirping in the spring...... We've cut 24'' and bigger low-lying elm next to creeks that would swell up behind the cut and squeeze you guide bar so tight you could barely cut through. Especially if there was any tension at all in the downed tree.
One of my most embarrassing moments EVER was having THREE saws stuck in the same log at the same time !! But please don't spread that around. LOL. As usual...another informative video GP. (I would have a hook on that safety latch in two minutes..LOL but that's just me).

Morning GP! That’s a nice unit and looks very well designed - especially the higher table. I could have given it a real run for it’s money yesterday - also in green elm, but it was full of knots and cross-limbs. My 20 ton Champion splitter worked it’s heart out getting through it! It’s slower than a kinetic of course but splits literally anything and has been remarkably reliable in the 6 years I’ve had it.

Gord, in my recollection I’ve only seen my 20 ton Champion stall twice (just the ram, not the engine) in 6 year’s use. Both times were in the greenest, gnarliest, twisted elm you can imagine. One of those times was yesterday. I was trying to split an 18” diameter block with two large cross grain sections from large limbs. It sheared that elm within about 2” of getting thru it. I was surprised it got that far, given the block! I just peeled the block off the ram with the return stops, flipped it around, and was through it in a few seconds. Slow but steady wins the race ... kinda like me as I get older LOL!

    Hi GP,
Awesome splitter. The two handed safety feature is a great idea. The fast reaction on this unit pretty much requires it. While I saw it bog a bit on the elm, I did see one modification that should be made, which a higher splitting knife, to minimize the arm wrestling getting two pieces to separate. I saw many comments on the table height. It really seems obvious that most splitters should have a higher table height. I think the added height of lifting logs is easily offset, by not having to get a sore back from bending over. Oregon gets A+ for the table height. And an extra bonus is making it easier to split into trucks, trailers, or conveyors!

Thank you for a very good presentation. Most videos of wood splitters show them splitting "easy woods". Elm is a cross grain wood that is one of the most difficult to split. Looks like the Oregon Kinetic handles it just fine and is fast. Many large Elm trees dying in my area due to the Elm Leaf beetle and drought.

That's a nice splitter, I looked up the specs and the advertised force is equivalent to 28 tons. I like the table height and hitch system, what I don't like is the table width, the side flares are wide to put re-split pieces on, but it also looks difficult if your using a tractor with a bucket as a log lift, maybe its just the angle I was looking at. But all in all looks like a nice product and you did an awesome review.

Very informative. I've never been around one of those types of splitters but you're making me want to try one. I very rarely split by myself unless I"m using the backhoe splitter but this looks like it could be a good alternative to a one man operation rather than using the old hydraulic type. The table looks like the only way to go when working alone as well. Glad you got to try that out and thanks for sharing on the channel!

We generally have stuff around 10-12 inches or so and it worked well with it. But I'd like to find some bigger stuff. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Good table height.
Let's see this splitter with a four way wedge!
Bad ergonomics in relation to having to contorsionate yourself, as both hands need to be busy sideways.
Also, due to this safety factor, your third hand will now come in handy to hold in place the log!!...
    Low productivity machine.

Hello Gord, that looks like one heck of a splitter! Now I would like to see it split green elm wood from a crotch cut! Or larger knots! So far this looks like it’s on my list, with possibly one modification to the tables... any idea what I’m thinking.... either two angle brackets bolted to the table or welded, to hold the buck straight during the beginning of the split! Work height is almost perfect, speed great, and the design of the tongue is spot on! Great video as usual! Keep it up !

That sure is a great splitter Gord . Yes the hieght of the table saves the back . The two handed safety system is nice but I have watched many people split wood and you as well that you use one hand to hold a piece of wood in place on an angle to split it where you want . You can't do that with this splitter . It did great on those smaller pieces but how would it do on larger akward pieces where you have to hold the piece of wood with one hand . It's just an observation on my part . I am by no means an expert on splitting wood . LOL .

Man that Elm sure is 'narly' to split, isn't it?
I do like that kinetic splitter, I had one of these years ago and it wasn't as popular as they;ve become today.. back then they were indeed under powered with one about 4 or 5 HP engines.
I like that feature of two hands to operate,..that's smart!
Towing on highway,..well now that would give me a lot of concern,..first because of those wheels and bearings ( from what I can see here ) then secondly,..that axle width is awfully narrow
in my opinion at least,...if you happen to 'touch' a pothole or bump in the road, there's more chance of that splitter going over on it's side. For my use, I'd put a wider axle on it with full
speed rated tires and wheels. ( like I said, this is only my opinion and experience gleaned over the years in renting and selling firewood splitters.
Would I buy one of these today,..yes you bet I would, if I were in the market.
Thanks for this and Cheers Gord!

I saw that you were struggling to keep some of the blocks on the bed where you wanted them. I bought Princess Auto's version of this splitter last summer. I too find the "both hands on controls" annoying. On mine I have bypassed the "safety" one as I find it safer to have one hand ON the round. One neat feature on the P.A. unit is that there's a cradle on either side of the ram to keep round logs centered so they don't roll around. I've put about 40 cords through mine and I'd never go back to a hydraulic splitter! Work table is a total back saver, you don't have to pick up the 1/2 rounds after EVERY split. Thanks for the review Gord! (Though I know I'm a year late to the party)
