1. TOP DIAL - MOVIE MODE.
2. PROGRAM EXPOSURE - MANUAL EXPOSURE (Folder 2, page 1).
3. XAVCs 4K @ 100mbs (Folder 2, Page 1) Select 4k from options (must have Class 10, u3 card SDXC or higher for 4k 100mbs). Keep in mind there is a 1.2x crop for shooting in 30p @ 4k. **Shooting for network TV is always 30p****
4. S&Q Slowmo. (Folder 2, page 1) This camera can do both time-lapses and slowmo with this function. To enable, turn the dial on top to S&Q, select your frame rates in options. For slowmo it capture 120fps with no crop! Now it will conform your footage into either a 30p or 24p file automatically, so this is where you select what you want it saved as.
5. AF DRIVE set to FAST. (Folder 2, page 1)
6. AF TRACK SENSOR set to RESPONSIVE. (Folder 2, page 1)
7. AUDIO RECORDING LEVELS. (folder 2, Page 2) ** This is only necessary if using a powered mic such as RODE VIDEO MIC PRO.
8. MOVIE W/ SHUTTER ON. (Folder 2, page 3) This enables the shutter button to trigger movie recording.
9. FINDER MONITOR DISPLAY. (Folder 2, page 6) This fixes the problem of the screen going black when accidentally. BUT IF YOU SHOOT STILLS, YOU'LL WANT TO SWITCH THIS BACK!
CUSTOM BUTTONS (Folder 2, page 8)
10. CONTROL WHEEL. Not set.
11. C1 - PICTURE PROFILE.
12. C2 - White balance.
13. C3 - APS-C Super 35 mode.
14. C4 - FOCUS MODE. Another alternative would be assigning this button as a Focus Hold button (AF / MF Toggle).
15. MULTI SELECT AUDIO RECORDING. Enabling this does not disable the directional side portions of the button to move the focus window.
16. CENTER OF DIAL - Focus Magnification.
17. LEFT OF DIAL - PEAKING DISPLAY. Peaking will add a color shade to items in focus. Change Color by going to Peaking Setting (Folder 1, Page 13)
18. RIGHT OF DIAL - ISO.
19. DOWN OF DIAL - MONITOR BRIGHTNESS. Change the default to -2, when outdoors, use down button to trigger Sunny Bright mode.
20. AEL - CENTER LOCK ON AUTOFOCUS. This draws a box around your tracking subject. Must have touch operations enabled. Once armed, select center button and then use finger to touch object to track.
21. TOUCH OPERATIONS (Folder 5, page 2). Turn on touch operations, no need to change Touch Panel / Pad settings.
22. FOCUS AREA - EXPAND FLEX SPOT (Folder 1, Page 5) Change Focus area from wide to expand Flexible Spot.
CUSTOM BUTTON CONT.
23. AF ON - GAMMA DISPLAY ASSIST. This adds contrast and color to your washed out Slog or HLG profiles, its only a display LUT, and does not burn onto the footage.
24. FOCUS HOLD - CENTER LOCK ON AF. This is another location where you can put the AF HOLD function explained in step 20. Only works if you have a lens with side button such as G-Master lenses from Sony.
25. AEL - ZEBRAS. Another great tool for exposure.
26. CLEAR FUNCTION MENU (Folder 2, page 8) clear thru the noise of all the other items stuffed in the menu. By placing the needed items on the second page, (Lower functions, middle slots 3,4,5)

27. LOWER 3 - S&Q FRAME RATE. You can now go from SlowMo 120fps to Timelapse with this switch. ****MUST TURN DIAL INTO S&Q position for it to work)
28. FUNCTION LOWER 4 - MARKER DISPLAY. Guide frames for aspect ratio, center cross hairs, or safety margins. You can select what aspect ratio you want in MARKER SETTINGS (Folder 2, Page 3)
29. FUNCTION LOWER 3 - PRIORITIZE REC MEDIA. Select card 1 or 2 for recording.
30. DIAL SETUP (Folder 2 page 8) Select TV / AV. This reverses the front and rear dials controlling aperture and shutter speed.
31. POWER SAVER START TIME. Automatically shuts off camera after 5 minutes.

Just got my A7III and this was super helpful. I had a couple of custom buttons on my A7SII, but mostly for exposure and quick zebras and peaking. Thanks for showing just how customizable this really is!

Wow! The Fn button and menu is EVERYTHING! So useful for not needing to deep dive in the menu.
My Menu is also amazing.
No need to change the display from auto. Just pulling out the screen a little will prioritize that and disable the eye sensor.

Loved the tips, really good. For subjects at a fixed focal distance from the lens that you want to keep in focus, instead of setting focus hold which is really annoying as it only works while holding down the button I prefer to set the camera to manual focus and then the focus hold button to AF/MF toggle. That way use autofocus to focus instantly then let go and focus doesn't drift. I love continuous autofocus for tracking shots, especially with centre lock on AF and the touch screen. I guess the only things I would do differently are - keep the focus magnifier on the AF on button where you already have the symbol of the magnifying glass. I wouldn't bother with monitor gamma assist as I think I'll just leave it in auto unless you have a good reason for not doing so? that saves a button for zebras.

One thing I need to add, for the slow motion you need to set the file format to XAVC S HD as the camera doesn’t support 4k slow motion and to get the best quality, under Record Setting you set the 120p 100M. Than the S&Q settings will make sense.
The way you said it it’s a bit tricky for a person who probably doesn’t know the camera that well. But overall, really nice video. I like the fact that you kept everything under 10 minutes and compressed a lot of info. Most of them dudes be doing a 15 minute video explaining one or two things.
I like people who optimize their time.
I was told slog 3 is not compaitable with SOny A7iii cameras due to 8 bit vs other sony cameras being 10bit which is supported. Thoughts?
But thats the thing. How do we know it's going to be slow motion? Or does the entire video become slow motion (if that makes sense)? Also, if it's not 4k, does it need to be 1080p60FPS? Ive been struggling with this for a while because I want to create high quality cinamatics but when I use 4k60fps it just looks choppy.

Same. It instantly became so much more useful and worth the $ after I programmed these settings and re-worked some of them to fit my preference. Like, I was starting to think it was so inferior to a camera like the GH5, which has cinematic aspect ratio guides and LUT simulation, things made for filmmakers that I couldn't find in the a7III... well, it's in there. So exciting!

I just switch myself from a Canon EOS T7 rebel DSLR camera to the Sony A7III 4k mirrorless. I just what the Sony from B&H recently and got my box last week. I shot the most recent video today on the Canon camera, and let everyone know that I'm switching soon from Canon to Sony. I'm glad I made the switch though I'm not against Canon. :)

If someone has trouble using the AF-lock on in 4K, check if you have Proxy recording on! It doesn't work if that's on and you record 4K for some reason.

Found this channel today. Really nice and useful content :) Just a small comment on 2:06. You can also avoid the auto-swapping between monitor and evf by pulling the rear screen just slightly out from the body as it disables the auto-swapping feature.
Yup, that is true! I find that maneuver is cumbersome when the unit is on a gimbal.....so its just easier for me bypass it in general. but thank you for sharing! and please post more helpful comments as its helpful to others as well ! xo

Hey man, thanks for the tips, love your tutorials. A heads up, and please forgive if I am mistaken, but it seems that you cannot use CENTER LOCK ON AUTOFOCUS while recording in 4K with PROXIES ENABLED. I was getting an error message when I tried to engage CENTER LOCK ON AUTOFOCUS and found that my disabling PROXIES the problem was resolved.

Yeah so I'm working on an episode on how to batch edit videos thru resolve. So you can shoot 4k and deliver in 1080, with a very quick and easy export time. Would that help you??

don't use SQ Settings, cause the Bitrate is much better if you set it via "1 / 2" manual settings.
Dude thats a really good point. I am doing a follow up video with the things that I HATE about the Sony A7iii, and this is one of them. That and the crippled bitrate and HD only option for timelapse.

I´ve setup so my 1 dial is for 4k 24 fps and my dial 2 is for 1080p 120fps both in SLOG 2. I´m not using S&Q at all (yet).

Brilliant. Thank you. Just bought one of these magnificent A7iii beasts, plus spent a tonne on lenses - fave is a Batis 85mm - all while not having picked up a camera since the mid-90s! Was working through the menus and sticking the best choices into a table on word... And there you are! Just reprogrammed the custom buttons, and already a whole heap better. Taking a break before doing the Fn button... But yes, wow, I can't get to the Art without understanding the Science a bit better... And now, one peak at the S-Log 2 assist and finally I feel I can do what I bought it for. Can you tell I'm grateful? Thank you, thank you.
