A lot of people have purchased this camera recently. There are ways to get some high quality videos out of this camera it just takes a few minor adjustments to the settings. Here is how I get the highest quality video for my Sony a7III while shooting.

M is refered to bitrate not resolution. 30p 100M means 30 frames per second with 100mbps

I think they’re useful in any type of situation! I might switch back and forth between 60fps and 30fps, but other than that, they should work just fine!

Shutter speed
ISO
Those setting all depend on the type of lighting situation you are shooting in, I always try and balance the bucket. Never let your shutter speed be less than half of your frame rate. So if my frame rate is 30fps, my shutter speed should be at least 1/60. If my frame rate is 60fps, my shutter speed should at least be 1/120. And then from there you can balance the other settings to your liking.
Watched your photography settings and just finished your videography settings. Just got my Sony A73 and have a lot of projects line up already and glad to watch your videos very informative on what settings to use and why and what they control!

What kind of lens do you use for your camera. My two lens do not allow me to use power focus mode.
I typically use G master lenses or G series lenses

4:10 DO NOT use steady shot in manual, unless you have a lens your camera can’t read.
If you set your steady shot at 8mm the shoot at 200mm, it will not work well. Try it. It’s a huge difference.
Hi, if I put in these settings my camera says: " To perform shooting with these settings, use a UHS-I U3/ UHS-II U3 compatible memory card". This sounds like abra cadabra to me, do you know what this means? I was also wondering if you could set two different shooting preferences (so day and night video settings), so that I can easily shift without putting in the ISO and F every time again. 1:41 I got just 25p, not 24p nor 30p, sb knows why?
You’ll need to go into your settings and find “NSTC/PAL control toggle” and switch it. It will restart your camera, and then you will be able to use 24p & 30p

What lens do you need for the function ring to work? It’s saying the lens I have on there currently is not supported which is a Tamron 70-180. Also with the Steadyshot settings in manual mode where you can set the focal length would it be better to set it at the high end of that focal length so for that Tamron lens set it to 180mm?

I would say a good budget lens for that type of this would be the sony 50mm 1.8, but a more expensive lens, I could see the 16-35 G Master being helpful for filming food.
I don’t have the (Function Ring Lens) option is it only available with certain lenses? Or how can I add it

Kinda of. You can achieve a similar looking video with PP10. It just provides an example setting for HDR recording and can be viewed with a wider range of brightness

Just to clear it out - M is not resolution but quality. Resolution is 1080p or 4K 😉
Why m mode over movie ?
I prefer it because you have more control over your settings
Hi Zach! Awesome video! I have a question for you. I bought the Sonya7iii because I saw most fitness videos are filmed with it and that is what my business is. Do you have a recommended "default" video setting for that? I know nothing about cameras and such so that's why I stumbled upon your video in the first place.
Awesome! Yeah so the easiest way to do it would be to shoot in A Mode, or auto mode. This can be done by changing the dial on top of your camera. I highly recommend learning to shoot in M mode eventually and I have a video for that! but for now just starting out learning the camera A mode will do just fine!
I notice light bands in my videos. What can I do to fix that? I have the a7iii

Was going absolutely crazy at my A7III looking noisy despite trying everything. Turns out the solution was to record in movie mode and not manual mode 🤦♂
Thats very help full mate !! I dont know why when i shoot XAVC S 4k the video will start ta lag in post proses.
I’m not sure! But it might be from your frame rate. Make sure you double your shutter from your fps. So if I’m shooting in 4k 60fps. I make sure my shutter is at least 1/120. Same for 4k 30fps, I’ll have my shutter speed at 1/60 at least.
is 60p 50m better for editing in slow motion (for weddings - shots of details and venue) or 30p 50m?
60p will allow you to film in 60 frames per second which will allow you to slow down the video. 30p with allow you to film in 30 frames per second which will generally not allow you to slow down the video depending on the type of timeline you are editing the video in
hi. liked your video... can you tell me if you have the same issue.. im kind of disappointing in my A7III. I also have a sony FX6 and I know, I shouldnt compare those two.. but yet I do.🙄
After I have shot with my A7III there is alot of video noise, and that does not go away in post and grading. Do you have the same "raw file" issue or is your picture quality good in raw? I also shoot in Log3
Noise can be an issue when shooting in S-log if you are not color grading properly, that might be the issue. But also the Fx6 is going to waaaayy out preform the A7iii in low light, so just be aware of what ISO you are using and keeping your exposure level between +1.3 - +1.7

Hi! Thanks for the vid. Have a question re Function ring. I have the 24-70mm FE 2.8 Sony lens and when I try to click on it to turn it on... it says that it isn't supported. Do you know what kind of lenses are supported for the function ring? other than the ones you listed? thanks!
i have a recording stodio in which i will be recording teachers online classes, i have all the tools needed, but i still dont have the camera and im searching to what fits me, hence i will be recording in 1080 hd, and a 30 frame, hence my studio is 3*4 meters, i have the budget of 1000$ to 2000$ so what lens fits me the best with what camera, so im thinking about the sony a7 III, note that i only to purchase sony camera. and if u want more details i will be glad to povide you with further details.
For that type of shoot with that budget, I really like the Sony a7iii and the 50mm f2.8 prime lens. The a7iii is around $1700 and the 50mm is around $250 or so. With that setup you could make the online classes a bit more personal because the 50mm really accentuates people in my opinion. Are you trying to film a whiteboard too or just the person talking
I selected XAVC S 4K and I have only two options 25p 100m and 25p 60m
So You have your camera set to PAL and mine was set to NSTC. They aren’t actually very different from each other, it’s just that different countries have different setting that they use. I talk about it in my settings video for the sony a7ii if you want to learn more!
In the beginning you say that you have a whole different video teaching about "M" mode and then immediately say that for this video we should be in "M" mode. Which setting should we actually be in?
I was just referencing that video if you didn’t know what M mode was, not a bad an idea to familiarize yourself with it in order to understand why I use some of these settings. And so you can better understand your camera. Hope that helped!

100M refers to the bitrate, not resolution. And ypu should not set you steadshot setting to some arbitrary mm setting, that should be set to your exact focal length and nothing else.
I came here to get some tips on what log profile etc I should use on my new A7iii, but instead I got some random weird information instead. Ah well, keep on searching I guess..
I use PP9, which allows you to shoot in S-log3. If you are planning on getting into color grading or want your videos to have the most cinematic look, I would shoot in S-log3

One good thing to note for most European users where PAL is standard format. 4K limits you at 25p while NTSC allows for 30p. So switching to NTSC might be nice if you want those extra frames and don't care too much about using PAL.

100% okay! If you check out one of my older cinematic films from Iceland, a lot of those handheld shots are 4k mixed with 1080

You will need to switch your camera from PAL to NSTC. Should be under your Yellow toolbox on the menu page

It does have a built in microphone but I would recommend getting small Rode Mic. this is an awesome video, and thank you for making this so easy to understand! I'm a newbie and starting to get into videography and could really use your advice: I am always filming in 60fps due to needing to slowmo the videos if necessary. I realize now that when doing that, I'm not getting the highest quality footage I could be getting, and I see that 4k only goes up to 30fps. What settings do you recommend, especially if you know you may need to slow down the footage later - but still want the highest quality?
I would still recommend shooting in that 60fps, but I would get in the habit of switching back and forth between 4k and 1080 in this regard.
What picture profile do you use? Slog-3, HLG3, etc?

How many FPS to keep the NORMAL video
Generally a “normal” frame rate is 30 or 24, but it depends on where in the world you are based. I believe Australia uses 25p where in the US, standard is 24p

When I do change my FILE FORMAT to XAVC S 4K, It only gives me 2 RECORD SETTINGS which are25P 100M and 25p 60M.

So sometimes when you buy a Sony camera it has automatic setting programmed onto it. In your case, it is currently in the PAL setting, where my camera was in NTSC. It’s simply a matter of which country you bought your camera in or where it was shipped from, etc. It’s simply a location thing.
There is a way to change that in your settings. It should be under your main setting page, and it should just say “NTSC/PAL Selector” and just click on that to change it. It may reboot your camera, but once you switch it, it will stay that way until you switch it back.
So this camera can't do 4K in 60fps??
Nope, it does shoot 60fps in 1080p

Hi Zach! Thank you for this video! The only issue that I have is setting up Function Ring as Power Focus. It's unavailable on my camera for some reason. Instead, I see the message while trying to klick onto Function Ring: Please attach a supported lens since the current lens is not supported. I use Sony A7III with Sigma 24-70mm F2.8, and I have no clue what's happening. I make photos and videos with this lens and it works, but to set up this setting I'm not able to. Maybe someone has experienced the same issue and knows how to solve it? Thanks!

3:07 thank you for clearing up that it is slow motion at 120p. I kept recording videos but they would slow down by themselves :( . Come to realize I was recording at 120 p 😅

So my camera doesn’t show me 24fps and 30fps. It only shows 25p at 60 and 100 for 4K. Do you know why that is?
It‘s in pal mode, ntsc mode gonna bring you the other settings but dunno if it‘s worth it tbh

I use M mode while shooting, but some people (beginners) prefer to use AUTO mode, because it’s easier to get better quality footage at the correct exposure

The Sony A7iii can only do 120 at 720p, which is under AVCHD

Theres not really a “better” choice. It just depends on what you prefer. I prefer NSTC, but feel free to try both and see what works best for you!

For Sony, It should be under picture profiles, and it will be called S-Log 3. For canon Im not sure but I assume it would be something similar!
Very helpful video but if I select the 4K recording option I only get two choices in the Record Setting screen ie 25P 100M and 25P 60M as opposed to the greater options in the video ?
There should be an option on your camera to switch it to NSTC mode vs PAL. This will allow you to see the same settings I do
Dude I never comment on videos either but this was perfect. You got right to the point and these things are simple or whatever, but I just got this camera (switched from canon) and this was so helpful. Making the ISO the spin wheel is so clutch, mine wasn’t set to anything. I thought I had to keep pressing right on the wheel and scrolling to desired setting. The 4k 1080p 120 frames thing was helpful also. I love slow-mo haha thanks brother

I think your issue is that your camera is set to PAL instead of NSTC. This is set purely based on your manufacturer and location. There is a way to change it in your settings, and it should be on the “yellow toolbox” section.
