  • Video depicting ihmc's work on the Planar Elliptical Runner. The Planar Elliptical Runner is a running robot that can run about 12 miles per hour on a treadmill. It is sandwhiched between two plates of glass, which keep it in the sagittal plane. It cannot turn or tip sideways, but it can tip forward/backward and fall down. The robot is "open loop stable". There is only 1 motor driving the legs. There are no sensors or computers on board. An RC car radio controller determines how much power to apply to the motor. Give the robot more power and it runs faster. Less power and it runs slower. In simulation we are exploring how to extend this concept to 3D running. Initial simulations are showing promising results.

    And that's how Horizon Zero Dawn started. Just kidding. Your robot is awesome, almost unbelievable how well it behaves without feedback from any sensors.

    Might have been better to wait and show off at the next successful stage without the walls. I'm very skeptical of this. Good luck though, it looks quite neat thus far.

    Listen at 1:46 for about 15 seconds - that narrator's voice is uncanny valley. Text to speech tech is becoming nearly indistinguishable - very fitting for the video content.

    • @johnnygodowski6920
      @johnnygodowski6920 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lee Johnson thanks for listening - um - uncanny valley - wow ! I am Johnny, the narrator here, and Cross my fingers I promise - I am not a Robot !
      As I recall that day I had horrible allergies and every other breath was punctuated with a sneeze sniff cough or something - so they edited most of those distracting sounds out, but the continuity of tone was understandably disrupted - inexplicably otherwise if you didn't know - so continuity was definitely a bit off admittedly that day, but it was no one's fault or intention at all.
      I thought the editors did wonderfully actually, to salvage what they could into what as written at least, is a cognitive concise compelling and correct narrative. ok - so hopefully not creepy now that you know
      So the lesson here? um - maybe it/me really is/am human and there really just are 'technical difficulties' sometimes ok biological allergy related difficulties? Ya Think? #TruerTuringTest cool hashtag maybe - dibs!- so relax - it was only me, me alone with my unanticipated and unwanted vocal distortions aka allergies : )
      But if I ever needed affirmation of my acting abilities - especially so as to convincingly portray such an AI - wow! : )
      If they edited a disparate phrase or scene here or there - fine - but I am not aware of it directly - as I see the film it pretty much is exactly my own improvisation word for word - there was no script at all.
      I am glad they totally improved it wherever they did ... improv is improv - allergy distracted is its own class of improv
      It is good to improve the improv ... that makes good film
      Of course if they can edit out a sneeze, they might edit out a whole superfluous phrase etc or recombine phrases to sweeten it up nicely, and that is their art for which they are to be saluted despite the definitely wrongly attributed 'creepiness' factor here - wow! - really! because I can assure you truly we humans only were all and so remain even in so valiant a pioneering attempt! my intentions are good
      please don't let me be misunderstood - could a robot really say that? : ) Johnny
      Am I the first to have inadvertently failed the Turing test without even meaning to? I am sure there are already many, many similarly funny stories out there ...

    I wonder how good it would run if it wasn't confined by two plexiglass planes on the left and right. The way it wobbles between those - probably not at all. So nice concept but not really working.

    • @andystead8788
      @andystead8788 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If you listen to the commentary you'll hear them saying that it's not intended to be stable left and right, only forwards and backwards, but that the next one they are building is designed to be stable left and right as well.

      Yeah, if an advanced application of technology isn't perfect in its very first iteration, then it should be completely written off / de-funded. I can't believe these dolts are developing highly-complicated robotic technology in a series of "stages" and doing all sorts of testing along the way. Just perfect it the first-time round, you dummies. Otherwise, you're just wasting time and money. I'm honestly amazed they don't take the sound advice offered in the comments section of a TH-cam video. This is where the REAL tech experts congregate.

    Isn't the whole point of the CPU calculations on a sensory robot to do precise slow movements? Because at high speeds, don't wheels just make more sense? I'm just thinking once the elyptical runner comes to a stand still or a walking speed, it'll just tip over. You'll still need the CPU and sensors to keep it standing. Unless the whole point is to make an AT-ST from Return of the Jedi. Then you're talking.

    While this is amazing for man to accomplish, it pales in comparison to this:
    _And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7_
    Man has the ability to run with emotion and motivation and change our minds and decide not to run, or to stop and cry over someone we love who has been hurt. What a difference between God's creation and man's machinations!
