    And now you know the full meaning of that line. It wasn't just her way to save the world, and save her sister. It was her reward. Her chance to finally rest and be at peace. No more pain or violence or fear.
    Which makes the start of this season even more painful.

      Not just that but it's she's also referencing the continuation of the slayer line when one slayer dies another is called ( I know technically the slayers line was supposed to continue on after faiths death before willow activates all potentials but that's only because Buffy was resuscitated/resurrected twice) it is supposed to be seen as a gift although I doubt most of the slayers before felt like it was more than a burden.

    Sarah and James both kill it this season. Especially when Buffy is walking down the stairs and he has all these little micro expressions from his eyes. Also at the end. Spike is a very vocal character. He says things and makes quips etc sometimes without thinking. He was stunned in silence and just listened to her, he didn't say a word or probe her to keep going he just let her speak which it feels like no one the ENTIRE episode did.

    A little nerding out here: Osiris is not a man: he was one of the Egyptian gods of the dead. Beginning as a god of fertility, he took on the new responsibility after being murdered by his jealous brother, Set. Isis, wife of Osiris, managed to conceive a son either before or after Set dismembered Osiris (depends on which version you read). The son of Osiris and Isis, Horus, avenged his father's death via a series of challenges. Osiris is one of the deities who judges the souls of the dead, weighing the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess and/or personification of harmony and justice. It is altogether fitting that Willow calls on this deity to assist in the raising of Buffy.

    I’ve always felt 5x22 would be the perfect series finale. Buffy (slayers in general) has spent her entire slayerhood sacrificing herself for the good of others. Making the ultimate sacrifice would fit totally with her character. In 5x22 the moment Buffy realizes that she could take Dawn’s place to close the portal she turns to look at where she is going to jump and you can see the look of relief on her face. Just like she tells Spike here “I was finished”. To finally have peace and then have it taken away from you? Poor Buffy! (Someone should put that on a t-shirt).

    That's the thinng with Giles. He HAD a life back in England before Buffy. He had a job, and had love in his life, and I'm sure friends and a routine. And he left all that for Buffy and he stayed with her all those years. Giles sacrificed a lot to be Buffy's Watcher, and I don't think he gets any recognition of that.

    • @jaciriley123
      @jaciriley123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Watchers are called much like slayer's are they are trained as teenagers to eventually train potential slayer's and maybe THE slayer. It was essentially his destiny as much as hers. All of this is explained in the books and comics which are all cannon, Giles rebelled in his teens with witch craft in response to not wanting to be a watcher but he eventually accepted his role which is why we have the stuffy straight laced version of older giles. So the sacrifices you talk of him making aren't buffy's fault or really even a choice for Giles it was destiny.

    • @geoffreybrowne5191
      @geoffreybrowne5191 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jaciriley123 It's still a choice and therefore a sacrifice. He could have quit at any time and the world wouldn't have fallen apart. Giles was assigned to be a Watcher at a young age. But not by destiny. He wasn't chosen by some mystical lottery. He inherited this role through his family. (It was also an occupation as he got paid, and it's implied he was paid well). And at one point for like a year, he got replaced as Buffy's Watcher by Leslie in Season 3. And at that point he wasn't even a Watcher anymore until Season 5. He could have skipped town many times and had another Watcher step in for Buffy. But he bonded with her like a father to a daughter. So he gave up his life to make sure she didn't lose hers.

    • @jaciriley123
      @jaciriley123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@geoffreybrowne5191 you need to read the books and the comics it explains it alot better but yes it was destiny being a watcher is a calling and a blood line, buffy didnt choose to be a slayer technically she could have walked away from it infact there are stories of other slayers doing that in the books but to be called was destiny it's fate and to go against it hasn't ended well for slayers who have tried same thing goes for watchers. Your entitled to your opinion but you are using "facts" to back up that opinion that are wrong.

    Your bringing up James Marsters performance when Spike first sees Buffy made me realize how much the show depends on his talent. Think about it: the scene was written without giving Spike any words. The writer knew that just putting the camera on his face and letting him react would be more than enough.

    • @geoffreybrowne5191
      @geoffreybrowne5191 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Both heavenly dimensions and hell dimensions and all the stuff in between. Since Glory was intending to 'get off the bus' at her hell dimensions, I think the gang, in some deeper layer of denial, assumed that was Buffy's destination when she jumped through. And they ran with that without question, because in their minds it justified performing a haphazard resurrection on their best friend.

    • @geoffreybrowne5191
      @geoffreybrowne5191 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, I dont think Buffy's soul went through the portal. I think the portal just killed her, and her soul just went through it's natural process of passing on.

    • @ShadowDogProduction
      @ShadowDogProduction หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@geoffreybrowne5191 my point is that a lot of people act like the Scoobys were foolish or moronic to assume Buffy was in hell. I'm saying that thought didn't come from nowhere. The thought was self serving and presumptuous but it had SOME rationale behind it.

    • @geoffreybrowne5191
      @geoffreybrowne5191 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ShadowDogProduction Yes. And I understand your point of view and I could partly get behind that. I think a combination of things were happening. For an extremely high stakes situation like this, they sure didn't ask a lot of questions. And they were still in mourning which is a big factor. They were just in a huge rush. Giles was gone and the town was still fine. They could have thought about it for more than 4 or 5 weeks. (The Mayor enacted the rituals for his ascension over a 100yr period). Willow didn't even know exactly what was supposed to happen during the ritual, or she just didn't tell the others. Willow has communicated with the Netherrealms in the past, and she couldnt do anything to even get a sense of where Buffy was or wasn't? Zander and Anya aren't really regular practicioners of magic, and Tara had already had some of her memories wiped by Willow for unknown reasons, so she was being manipulated. So they get a pass for being dumb.(jk, not so much dumb. But they really didnt think this through.). And Willow has had this pattern of behavior for a few seasons now, and she can't handle when something traumatizing happens that's out of her control. So just finds a "fix-it spell" and immediately casts it without any other consideration.Also, I think she had some awareness of potential outcomes of her actions, good or bad. And now all she wanted more than anything was to get her best friend back. So all that plus being in a state of mourning, plus all the confusion about the Key and the Portal makes it hard to blame them. But they still made bad choices, which results in the main conflict of season 7. There's the well known saying: don't make any major decisions or moves after a traumatic event or losing someone close. 🤕. (I'm sorry I'm long-winded!!)

    After Life was a great episode where Buffy reveals to Spike that was pulled out of Heaven, (foreshadowing here when Buffy said before 'is this hell) We see Buffy again experiencing her depression, which from the death of Joyce onwards is always there. She says to Giles in S5 Finale The Gift, ' I don't want to live in a world like this if these are the choices, if everything keeps getting stripped away'. Spike also reveals in S5 episode Fool For Love 'every slayer has a death wish, even you'. Buffy is obviously not the same since coming back, she has been torn out of heaven, and does not know how to deal with life now. Of course she was right when she said to Dawn at end of The Gift ' the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' and she was right. Great acting from both SMG and James Marsters in this episode, we can see the Spuffy relationship growing. This episode sets up a great Season arc. I can understand why some fans dislike S6, but I thought it was a great Season, much more adult due to network change from WB to UPN.

    In this episode we see that despite not having a soul, and still being evil, Spike really does care about Buffy. No ordinary vampire would have spent 147 days - 21 weeks - carrying out his last assignment from Buffy, watching out for Dawn as best he can and truly regretting his failure to protect her well enough in s5e22, thus Buffy having to sacrifice herself.
    And Buffy needs Spike now. She needs someone to know the truth. Someone she can be herself with. More importantly - she trusts Spike not to tell the others, not to betray her confidence. She needs him, she trusts him, and she is using him as an anchor to keep her grounded as she plays the part of thankful Buffy in front of everyone else.

    Let's make no mistake, literally the *_only_* reason Buffy wasn't in hell, was because her friends bringing her back from heaven was the only thing worse.
    In the Buffyverse, no good deed goes unpunished. It doesn't matter how good Buffy was or that she died saving the world. The Buffyverse isn't fair and equitable like that. Bad things happen to good people _all the time,_ sometimes seemingly exclusively. But it's actually kind of spectacular her soul wasn't trapped in a hell dimension, seeing as it left her body while the walls of reality were down, and a multitude of hell dimensions surrounded them; it would not have been even a slight stretch of the imagination to think Buffy's soul could have ended up on the wrong side of those walls when they went back up; _especially_ considering that that's exactly what happened to Angel, when it was _his_ blood that had to be used to close the portal linked to Acathla's hell dimension. It's even kind of suspicious that Buffy thought her friends and loved ones were safe without her, when they clearly weren't going to be for much longer. Having her turn out to have been in heaven only serves the plot if you're someone who likes to twist the proverbial knife.

    27:45 Willow could easily have checked where Buffy was, calling her spirit back a moment to answer some questions is relatively easy compared to a full on ressurection. Willow chose not tpo because deep down she didn't care, all thta mattered was her feeling better.

      I don't know if it was about Willow 'feeling better' like with Oz and Something Blue. She still had Tara and Xander, and we know what she goes through without Tara...
      I'm guessing she 1) needed a reason to challenge herself magically 2) couldn't handle the responsibility of taking Buffy's place. Going to school, slaying for her, raising her sister, managing her house...it hard to believe those things didn't play a part deep down but she probably rationalized and masked all those things with this belief that she may have been in he'll (although there was a body) and Sunnydale needed a protector and they knew that.

    Buffy was in Heaven, and it makes perfectly sense, but the series
    was masterful in making us believe the opposite and taking us by surprise! Well done to Whedon and Company!

    The very first magic spell Willow did was the spell to restore Angel's soul-- which, instead of helping ended up causing Buffy more pain because of its unfortunate timing. Since then, while her magic has often been just a convenient superpower assisting the Scoobies, it also keeps causing harm whenever she pushes boundaries: she *almost* called up the devil to torment Oz and Veruca; she accidentally forced Buffy and Spike into making out with each other at a time when that was repellent for both of them; when Dawn wanted to bring Joyce back only Tara thought of the moral question, Willow just thought of whether it would work. Now, this. Since you put a clip from the end of the season into your edit here, you can think of an example or three during the coming season as well (I'll avoid specifics for any viewers who are only watching the show alongside your videos).
    Willow is well-meaning, but the show has never let us quite forget that she really can't be trusted to use magic responsibly. She does harm as often as she does good.

    The funny thing about Alyson Hannigan crying is that it doesn't happen for me with How I Met Your Mother. Obviously the tone of that show is very different, but she has several really sad scenes in that show that don't hit ANYWHERE near the way they do in Buffy. I feel like Alyson Hannigan as Willow crying is a particularly magical/cursed combo.

    I read somewhere that willow`s insistence that buffy had to be in hell was based on her religious belief that by choosing to jump instead of allowing dawn to jump, it was technically suicide by a human. my mom once said `suicide is the one sin that can never be forgiven, because you dont have time to ask god for forgiveness after your dead.` I dont think that claim makes sense from either a christian or a jewish point of view though. dawn on the other hand probably would have just reverted into her key energy. so even though willow`s messing with dark magick she was still raised in a home where her father is a rabbi.

    Couple of tiny things I want to mention (so I shall!). First, some nerdy medical trivia. When Spike tells Dawn to get stuff to patch up Buffy’s hands, he asks for “curachrome and bandaged”. At some point in my numerous watches, I started wondering exactly what “curachrome” was; turns out what he actually says is “Mercurochrome”. Mercurochrome is an antiseptic which dates back to the early 1900’s and was banned by the US in 1998 because it contains (as one might suppose from the name)…mercury; which is generally not great for any animal that likes being, you know. Not poisoned. In my head canon, Spike has known about Mercurochrome for decades, but hasn’t been keeping up with the latest news and is unaware of the ban. :)
    Second, something I didn’t notice until fairly recently. @11:57, Dawn’s cleaning Buffy’s face and says “I knew you were under that dirt somewhere”. Given Buffy’s recent experience, I’d think that lands both weirdly and hard. Buffy writers are clever hobbitses.

    I will never understand this extreme fixation everybody seems to have with Giles. When I was watching the show I *never* particularly cared about him,just like I never particularly cared about Joyce. I was much more focused on the"teenage"characters,the adults were 100% optional for me. It will never cease to confuse me how reactors spend dozens of minutes wondering what will happen with Giles and if Giles is gonna stay or not and worrying about the fact he might leave for good. It was *totally 100% indifferent to me* and,actually,I wouldn't have _minded_ getting rid of him once and for all because,as I said,I never really got _fond_ of him. He was there. He was there because he _had_ to,not because _I wanted him there_ if that makes sense. I was much more shocked and disappointed when Angel,Oz&Cordelia got out of the show because,starting the show from S3,I never percieved the main characters as"core 3(or 4 depending if you count Giles)",to me they were the core 6:Angel&Buffy,Willow&Oz and Xander&Cordelia. As I said,I never even counted Giles in,to me he WAS an optional character. Always been,always will be!

      To a lot of people Giles is the perfect father figure. Strong and fierce when he needs to be, kind and gentle and loving the rest of the time. He protects and educates and supports and sets boundaries and provides guidance and lets you know he'll always be there for you when you need him while allowing you room and space to grow and find out for yourself who you are. Not everyone was lucky enough to have someone like that in their life. Those who love Giles love him for showing them something they may never have even known they needed.
