    Wow, what a blast from the past. Beautiful! I like the early edition orks far more than the new figures, but that's me.

    100% agreed on how much more homogenous and "less fun/whimsical" Orks have gotten. It makes me sad GW doesn't still print the sprue with the curved chainsword and the old goofier-looking plasma guns. Fond, fond memories of when every autocannon had the animal head on the barrel-end. Non-optional.

    Dude the theme song gets me every time.
    I have had a ton of Orks over the different editions, but cut back on the collection to keep the old Rogue Trader Space Ork set that came with metal minis, along with a couple of the original Ork Battlewagons. I have the Second Edition starter Orks with a bunch of metal extras including the Dreadnought. Then the 5th starter Orks with a bunch of extras. The plan is to paint them up to reflect the era they were each released in… but man, I just have too many projects.

    • @Miniscape-wh40k

    The older Orks looking undersized compared to the new makes perfect sense if you consider that popular culture's perception of what an "Orc" was has changed over the years. Tolkien, who invented the Orc as we understand it, conceptualized them as just another name for Goblin. It's why everywhere from early Warhammer to D&D showed Orcs as being shorter than humans. They were basically just slightly taller goblins, and even Rogue Trader said as much when comparing average size. Orcs, as a fantasy race, we conceived as being numerous and cruel, but cowardly.
    It's only as time went on that "Orc" began to drift towards being conceived as larger and buffer than humans. Partly, I imagine, to further distinguish them from Goblins, and partly in attempt to make them seem like truly martial threats. The Steve Jackson LotR films probably helped with this, with the cinematic portrayal of Uruk-hai as being larger, more imposing Orcs.
    Warhammer, obviously, has hewed to this "enbiggening" of Ork-kind as a general rule. Making them comically large and muscular. The only exception being Kruleboyz over in AoS, who are thinner and weedier. But still tall.

    Why the BATTLEWAGON, of course...
    AND- a Wierdboy, and Minderz, the Madmob to with him. Nothing says LOVVE like a giant Foot of Mork template, stomping an IG tank.

    That got me very nostalgic for 2nd edition orks and a need to scratch my Gorkamorka itch. If went down the road of making another, I'd be insisting that the cardboard Dread is still a tournament legal model when properly based.

  • @Bodkin_Ye_Pointy
    @Bodkin_Ye_Pointy ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So, did you name any of the Orks? I got into them in 2nd Ed by default but properly started collecting when 3rd Ed released. For me the death of Orks occurred when Phil Kelly released the first hard back Ork Codex. Up until that point, if handled well Orks were a credible threat on the battlefield. I went of the green backed soft covered codex which allowed me to field a looted Demolisher Tank called Grim Daize, because it was going to be for somebody. However Kelly's butcher job, made Tank Bustas unusable. Made Grim Daize illegal. Dismissed Psycho blastas on the bikes, a trade off rule for halving the Auto Cannon range. Made my scratch built Flash Gitz illegal and pretty much over priced everything. Sure it was 6 points for an Ork Boy. But then you paid for a Shoota or a Slugga and Choppa. Ork Ard Boyz cost as much as a SM for a 4+ save and S3.
    And so, Grim Daize, the Flash Gitz, Tank Bustas and Bikers were consigned to the shelf. Trucks, Buggies and Trakks became Ronsons. Oh yes, my scratch built gargant with a giant klaw, belly gun (A Russ cannon) and arm with a Zapp Gun on the left arm. It was points costed from a table system put out by GW Chapter Approved. Also gone, years before GW ever released one themselves.
    My Waaagh Boss, Hammasmak Throbz in Mega Arma. Accompanied by his Nobz retinue, Throbz Nobz. Driven around in the trukks from Gorka Morka. I still have the models and they recently had a run with my son. Produced a whiff of nostalgia.

  • @daiatnara971
    @daiatnara971 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dat's a propa Orky mob! I like your paintwork on them - I love the old school Boyz but I often felt they could wind up a little bit TOO cartoony, I think the way you've painted their skin, with pink shading through the green on the lips and ears and noses, pulls them back from the edge, so they're proper fun Orks wearing their clan colours with pride (rather than as an afterthought like today's grimdark brute Orks do), but still a dangerous force rather than a joke.
    Not sure if you're interested in suggestions, but one of my favourite bits of Ork business is in Ere We Go, where one of the colour pages for the Blood Axes includes an Imperial Guard captain moonlighting as a mercenary advisor to the boss, calling himself 'Skumgrod' and wearing an over-the-top colourful version of a regular Guard uniform to fit in with the boyz. Might be where that looted tank came from, perhaps the captain made a tidy off-the-books profit letting slip when his regiment's motor pool sentries would be on their tea break and one of the Leman Russes would 'just happen' to have its keys left in the ignition...

    • @Miniscape-wh40k

    Morning. I always preferred the look of the metal war bikes compared to the plastic ones. Can't read put my finger on why. The plastic ones just seemed cleaner some how, so just less orky. How about some madboyz? Were some really good sculpts back then. Really colourful, crazy and full of character. Although, maybe more third edition. Never played, just bought what I liked for my Blood Axes, then Evil Sunz armies, so limited knowledge on that side of things. More attracted to the modelling side of the hobby. Great looking army. Brings back so many memories!👍

    Plasma Cannon? Whats one of them? Its a Heavy Plasma Gun ya filthy casual!
    I still have my Orks at my parents, in fact, I have 2 Ork armies. A Speed Freakz from the Armageddon era, and a Blood Axe army, but used the Death Skull rules from WD as it allowed me to use more than one looted vehicle. (my logic being, Blood Axez were known to deal/trade with the Imperium, so they'd been able to acquire some more) I even had a small unit of Lootas with Sniper Rifles, which were brilliant as they could pin themselves. Still remember the odd little unit of lootas with a missile launcher, that always seemed to hit everything....
    I'll suggest trying to get some Gorkamorka models for variety, the scale is a little off, even making the 2nd-ed orks look big, but not enough to worry about. If I ever manage to get the models from my parents, I'll try to show them off.

    Recently found a range of orks that are recasts of the rogue trader boyz but done in the new modern scale i just dropped an ungodly sum on getting a bunch for my blood axes 😅 and now I'm looking to recast the rogue trader battlewagon and maybe get 2 of those

    As someone who got into warhammer through space crusade in the early 90's I never truly "got" space orcs. I just saw them as a simple crossover from fantasy.
    However the book series "the beast arises" gave me a real appreciation for space orcs, made them feel like a real existential treat in the warhammer universe.
    Now I have started a very tentative collection.
