to me this is still the golden era of 40k miniatures. I know they're derpy and disproportionate but they have charm and character that is still unmatched.
I started playing in 2nd, I had Ultramarines, the thing that swayed me was that double powerfist wielding Marneus Calgar and being a huge fan of the alien films seeing the Ultramarines fighting Tyranids just made me love them. I never actually came across another Ultramarines army when playing 2nd Ed, everyone I met with space marines was playing Blood angels or Space wolves.
Ahh, 90's Warhammer 40,000 - where in the grim darkness of the far future, war is fought in ideal daylight conditions on well kept grass. Kinda like cricket.
You used to be able to get this between £100-150 back in 1993 which works out in todays money as £390.94. Obviously you'd pay more buying seperately, but it's more or less on track when you add a margin for buying an army box. 250 for 2 combat patrol equivalents ( bearing in mind the changes that Marines have gone through in terms of power and composition, leaving about 140 to find the rest, if you google Space Marine Ultramarines Army Box 2000pts 2nd Edition Box Sleeve, that's what was sold, so it isn;t in keeping with whats seen here, but I was very surprised to see the value remaining quite similar. Very surprising for GW.
It’s so beautiful! Don’t get me wrong, the models today are amazingly detailed and realistic, but there is just something about these models that just reeks 90s. It’s like a cartoon version of the modern 40k grim dark for lack of a better description. It’s funny I was too young back then to notice how the game slowly changed tone and style, it’s almost like it grew up with me.
I LOVE this. I remember seeing this army in action in the 3rd Edition rulebook battle report again Gav Thorpe's Eldar and that is what hooked me. I love the vintage bright colours and the green fleck base for some good '90s nostalgia

This is the heart of Warhammer 40k. We've lost something in the modern game compared to this. Yes the modern sculpts are better, but there is a lot of artful simplicity in these designs. I started painting and playing Warhammer in mid 9th edition and this video has been a blast from the past that I wish I could have experienced keep up the good work!
The Captain's short power sword makes sense as a Gladius type weapon. A pity subsequent models forgot that it's *meant* to be short, meaning most Ultramarine captains have a blade only just shorter than the Masamune from FF7. As for the Army Boxes, I remember them evolving into the Battle Forces, and then to just Army Boxes, and then to Combat Patrols. The old ones were better though, they had old minis :P I think the Supremacy Force was the last boxed-bundle type there was, soon after White Dwarf just had the battle force plus a few other minis with some small discount to recreate armies used in battle reports.
Bringing back a lot of 90's memories from when I first got into the hobby. Keep up the good work bud, you have me wondering what 2nd Ed ork army I could scrap together with my collection.
I grabbed the Leviathan box set because i love the idea of space marines vs hordes. My sister in law is a fan of the Tyranids so those models are effectively hers.
Damn that is a beautiful project! Very well done. I've been gathering the odd old hammer model here and there with the idea of at least painting one model of squads I wished I had as a kid. Great video.
I started in 3rd. 2001. I missed out on those army deals and it took some time to get my force over the years. I have nearly 2300 points of ultramarines. A hodgepodge of what was left at the time as they modernized and came out with plastics. I didn't realize it at the time, what the vanilla/smurf hate was all about. I just liked the lore and the blue armor. I also appreciated the Rome influenced aesthetic. It just felt right. Anyways, thanks for the showcase, it's a magnificent force.
Very cool! I only got into 40K 2 years ago but older armies like this are pretty charming in their own way, something about the lower complexity of the models is kind of nice. Great job with the painting!
I did buy that 2nd ed Ultramarine box set, it was $AU300 IIRC, I still use the box itself to store stuff in, the paper image on the front is long gone as well as the minis.

I had a lot of these figures as a kid in the early/mid 90's. Thank you for sharing. I seem to remember that a Dreadnaught cost £19.99 and Marneus Calgar about £4.99. How times change!
I feel like anyone who got into the hobby while young has spent a good while gazing at those White Dwarf and rulebook photos of full armies and dreaming of having something like that - I know I sure did. Congrats on living the dream, it's great to see a retro army amassed out of love for the good old days. I remember the 'vanilla Ultramarines' stigma too, although around here Space Wolves had an even worse reputation - the feeling among local gamers was they were overpowered in 2nd, and therefore anyone playing Wolves was a powergamer and nobody wanted that label on them. I got the Angels of Death codex in a similar vein to your choice that Blood Angels were the respectable alternative, although I was kind of primed for BA having come to 40k from Space Hulk anyway, and of course I quickly veered off into inventing a homebrew chapter - although when 3rd edition rolled around, I found the basic Codex Space Marines list (i.e. Ultramarines, following the Codex Astartes directly) the most fun to use, so even though I wasn't painting my troops blue, that gave me a fondness for the Ultras that lasts to this day.
Great looking army, after the rogue tradder womble heads I did for the chapter approved space wolves story I did a blood angels battle company from that era.might have a space marine apothecary from that era spare and I'll see what bikes iv spare as I know iv got soon for my second space wolf company unbuilt plus spare ones of the 40k partworks magazines.
Lovely looking collection! I stuck a little number 10 on the other shoulder of my scouts to indicate they’re from 10th company. That’s not strictly codex approved but it looks cool.
As an Ultramarines fan (feels like everybody thinks there's millions of us but I've never met another) this is fantastic. It's so nice to see someone show them some love, as it feels GW forgets these days that UM has their own culture and isn't just a blank slate for other chapters. I'm painting a 1k point UM army in the style of the space marine video game using contrast paints. I got into the hobby about half-way into 9th edition and it's interesting to see that the UM stigma has existed even before Matt Ward got ahold of their lore. I began with black templars because I too was swayed by my friends who said UM were basic and unimaginative, yet I've found no one who plays UM yet. Now I'm doing the chapter I really like. Funny how the stigma likely led to UM being more niche and unique a choice than they would've been if everybody left them alone. More fun for us! Cheers from another son of Macragge.

When I see something like this I sincerely hope that the left over models I had from my 2nd Ed SM army project I that l sold on eBay ended up part of something like this
That is pretty much what I had, and still have, although it was not one large box. I picked it all up piecemeal overtime with boxes and loose figures. That version of the chaplain I had mounted on a bike. The Skull head chaplain I gave a jump pack to. My Captain Invictus was scratch built with a pair of plasma guns added to him for his custom weapon. Of course I had the classic Ultramarine captain with the crest as well as the other character figs. I printed the banner of Ultramar on an old color printer and added it to a standard bearer. Dreadnaughts in various configurations were present with one done up as a dreadnaught containing a chaplain painted appropriately. I had the old school Land Raider, then a kitbashed one made from a Leman Russ until the new one showed up. This was the go to solution while the Land Raider was out of production. There were also several Landspeeders which I do not see here. Of course no insane 2nd edition army would be complete without a Techmarine on a bike armed with a Virus Grenade or a Vortex Grenade. There was nothing like rocketing across the field to take out something like an Avatar, greater demon, or entire Ork force with the Virus grenade. Last but not least, as backup to my force should the dark followers of Chaos appear, I had a squad of old school Grey Knight terminators with their Nemesis force weapons. It was always nice to teleport them in and have them cast a vortex into your foe.
@@Miniscape-wh40k I miss those mad days of 2nd edition. I played 40k well into 3rd before moving on elsewhere. They are all still packed away in my basement. 40k simply became too much of an arms race and constant cash drain.
I've been doing this with space wolves: what I had unbuilt from childhood + ebay scavenging. Every model is converted or restored quite heavily, but no paint yet.
Just found your channel. Really enjoyed the video. The voiceover feels like it’s going to tell me how many crunches it can do and ask if I like Phil Collins and I’m here for it.
1:44 this may be reading too much into it, but ultramarines clearly has always had a Roman legion vibe to them. So maybe the power sword is short on purpose to resemble the Roman Gladius sword, which were also a shorter sword🤔🙆🏼♂️
I don't know how much this army would cost to buy from a GW store now but I also miss the days when you could buy a whole army in a box like this. I too was a penniless teenager at the time without a hope in Hades of being able to afford a set like this and my parents weren't rich enough to spend this kind of money on one of their kids let alone all three of us for birthdays or Christmas. So I really respect this video and story .
That's a collection to be truly proud of!! I'm very envious!! The NMM on the tech marine looks really good!! I wouldn't mind seeing a video where you demonstrate the process?? 🤞 Was the eBay sealed army box Jamie Hutber by any chance??
Space Wolf players never have been right in the head, which is an observation I've made over the years - though, the less said about Alpha Legion players the better! That Ultramarine Commander, is such a simple, yet compelling design, showing its function more as a gaming piece than as a modelling or painting model.
Depending on how well you know the rules and how the armies are made up, games of second edtion can be incredibly quick due to the lack of unit-specific special rules and pre-measuring. So if nobody takes an army that is lets say very heavy on template weapons (looking at you, gargoyles), you can easily learn it well enough to only have to look up the vehicle datafaxes from time to time and otherwise blitz through. We play a streamlined version of it, granted, but in that, my main opponent and I can finish a 3k points game in about 2 hours if we try to be quick about it. If we play at a normal pace, its closer to 3 hours though.
@@Miniscape-wh40k Dont *aim* for it, it will just happen once you get comfortable with the rules and dont have too look everything up on every opportunity :P
Love it! It's how I'm painting my current Ultramarines. New models, old paints. Sadly, the UK is a bit far to ship metal, otherwise I'd be happy to get you set up with some of the missing things you mentioned ... metal Land Speeders in particular, but I do have the original plastic Scouts to spare, and probably some other stuff. I can also walk you through how to make the O.G. Whirlwind ... mine's the oldest in the state of TN and *possibly* the oldest on in America - A friend of mine subscribed to White Dwarf, back when it was a UK exclusive, and had it shipped here in town. The day he got the issue that introduced the Whirlwind, he let me know and I built it that very night. Still use it! Let me know if you want pictures of it, and I can tell you how to make one from an original Rhino kit, should you be able to get your hands on another one to base it.
Thank you for your kind offer. However, I have a whirlwind in the wings waiting to be painted. Thanks again. But man, I would love a metal land speeder some day 😃
@@Miniscape-wh40k Had to take a quick dip into the garage. I didn't go digging very far, but I dug up one of the Land Speeders. When you mentioned a bike, did you want a plastic with metal sidecar attack bike or did you mean the old Vincent Black Shadow metal bikes? Anything else you're after? Original assault marines, librarians, medics, etc? I suppose, really, that if you wanted to make a list of what you're after, I can see what's out there. Not touched some of these guys in decades, and lots of it's still in blister packs. SOME of it you'd have to strip and repaint, but most not.

Thanks for the epic message. Sounds like an incredible collection, able to handle all eventualities. ✊
@@Miniscape-wh40k I miss those mad days of 2nd edition. I played 40k well into 3rd before moving on elsewhere. They are all still packed away in my basement. 40k simply became too much of an arms race and constant cash drain.
@@kennethfharkin I think the arms race/cash drain is still the case
Esa fue la mejor época de GW
I've been doing this with space wolves: what I had unbuilt from childhood + ebay scavenging. Every model is converted or restored quite heavily, but no paint yet.
Nice one. Keep up the good work.
@@Miniscape-wh40k Thank you. Same goes. I'm enjoying the vids.
Just found your channel. Really enjoyed the video. The voiceover feels like it’s going to tell me how many crunches it can do and ask if I like Phil Collins and I’m here for it.
I don't know how to respond to that but I think it's a compliment, so thank you
@@Miniscape-wh40k not sure if you got the American Psycho reference. Definitely was a compliment. Instant Sub and now watching your other videos!
@@bighammyrfc yeah I didn't haha, but thanks for the sub and watching my vids
Stunning. Im on a similar journey with imperial guard
Thanks. Which regiment?
@@Miniscape-wh40k a platoon of each flavour.

1:44 this may be reading too much into it, but ultramarines clearly has always had a Roman legion vibe to them. So maybe the power sword is short on purpose to resemble the Roman Gladius sword, which were also a shorter sword🤔🙆🏼♂️
I think you are right
this is amazing!
😍
I don't know how much this army would cost to buy from a GW store now but I also miss the days when you could buy a whole army in a box like this. I too was a penniless teenager at the time without a hope in Hades of being able to afford a set like this and my parents weren't rich enough to spend this kind of money on one of their kids let alone all three of us for birthdays or Christmas. So I really respect this video and story .
Thanks buddy
That's a collection to be truly proud of!! I'm very envious!!
The NMM on the tech marine looks really good!! I wouldn't mind seeing a video where you demonstrate the process?? 🤞
Was the eBay sealed army box Jamie Hutber by any chance??
I didn't check the ebay listing. Thanks about the techmarine. I will see what I can do in the future about a demonstration.
pure gold
Thank you
The captains power sword looks a bit like a gladius so pretty fitting for an ultramarine
Space Wolf players never have been right in the head, which is an observation I've made over the years - though, the less said about Alpha Legion players the better!
That Ultramarine Commander, is such a simple, yet compelling design, showing its function more as a gaming piece than as a modelling or painting model.
The backpack, with Cape was from a few models, the captain with raised right power fist and pointed out one handed bolt gun
Yeah I had him with a blood angels and dark angels captain too in my youth
Beautiful work! Just subed keep up the amazing work
Thanks for the sub!
I shall aim to play faster 😅

@@thomaswilloughby2951 I greatly appreciate the effort you have gone to. Let's discuss this off channel. I think my email is somewhere on here.
