Ultraman of all things! Being an incredibly historic IP from 1960s Japan, now, there is to be a new western adaptation, animated and all. And admittedly, I'm not too knowledgeable on the Tokusatsu genre. But come join a new fan's brief history of Ultraman, and the history of Netflix's animation antics in recent years. Potentially being the introducing of Ultraman to a new audience, while switching up the typical Ultraman tropes, this is looking to be an interesting example of a project. So some join me as we dissect animation within Netflix. As now that we're after The Avatar Last Airbender Live Action wave, THIS Is Netflix's Next Animation Project...

...So how much do you know about Ultraman? Does this seem like a super-niche project to you? Or the kind of platforming you've wanted for years..? - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
Are people aware of Ultraman? Are you a fan of Tokusatsu as a genre? Or are you more like me, and typically unaware..?
Never heard of them
I saw the trailer for it a few days ago. But i never really watched ultraman.
If you live in Asia, then basically everyone is aware of Ultraman. its the asian version of Superman
I'm a fan if Godzilla and the special
Effects director for the showa Godzilla films created his own company and that they made ultraman
I don’t know
Ultraman is an alien that shares a bond with a human who was dying. After they become bonded, they can interchange between each other's physical forms, although Ultraman himself can not stay on Earth for too long. The human can summon Ultraman with a sort of remote device. I watched the first season of the original show, and it's funny and campy, but I love it.
Yeah, but not every Ultra is bonded with a human. For example, Ultra Seven, the Ultra, who was the lead after the original, takes on the form of a human but never merges with one.
Nor the ones who are sick they're just typically in commatose when it happens
@@firdanharbima6997 There was a few Ultras who had different reasons for fusing with their human partner. Like Tiga fused with Daigo after Daigo found him at the old ruin and unfroze him.
Some of the Ultraman series could be more serious though, like Ultraman Leo or Ultraman Nexus. Heck there's a lot of more darker content in Ultraman later.
@ablosch2452 I know, I was only talking about the original Ultraman show, the one I watched
It’s a shame Netflix’s reputation took a nose dive in recent history, cause there’s lots of genuinely good Netflix originals
Netflix made many mistakes during there existence
- increasing the prices on their plans multiple times
- cracking down on password sharing which they ignored their "Love is sharing a password" tweet from March 2017
- released some of their most controversial content (Cuties, the "13 Reasons Why" season 1 finale scene related to suicide, and Netflix's Cleopatra)
- locking some useful features like 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos behind the $22.99/month Premium plan
- and favoring Quantity over Quality which resulted in losing most of their subscribers in the 2020s.
Riffraff?!?
I cannot escape riffraff. Not even on a non-msm video.
You are literally everywhere

The fact Toku fans thought ultraman spinning was the coolest thing in the world (cuz it is I swear-)
I agree, it is cool
I mean what other titan size humanoid guy iconic moves even come close?
The original concept behind this movie was originally an original IP inspired by Tokusatsu properties like Ultraman however Tsuburaya found out about it and liked it to the point they gave the crew the Ultraman IP.
Yeah the movie was so early in production that they were able to include it thankfully. They also touched up the script to incorporate more Ultraman lore too.
That gives me more faith it will be good. I am a bit warey of spin offs of well known IPs, but given it was concept first _then_ IP, sounds more like a passion project!
Tsuburaya on that based grindset.
@@FireFury190I unironically loved the Ultraman anime and I am so happy this is coming out I loved most of the ultra series and movies id love to see a Action game come out of this franchise I think the Xenoverse devs can do them justice
"ultraman is kinda mixed up with the elements like power ranger and super sentai"
Kamen rider: am i joke to you
Tbf all of them are their own thing and all west people know are just power rangers
It's a bad comparison mostly because the more accurae description would be Way Big meets Superman.
Sadly, here in the West, tokusatsu is frequently considered a joke to people. But that likely stems from it not adhering to the Western special effects philosophy of "Convince me this unbelievable thing is real".
I compare it more to stuff like Godzilla and Gamera.
@@mfirdanhbpower rangers original super sentai
I love when people complain when Ultraman can talk while can talk since 1966
I know I did! I mean, I didn't. I am not Ultraman using an earthly device.
The Hanna Barbera project was supposed to be a pilot for a weekly Saturday morning action show but NBC decided not to air it and made it a TV movie. The project was approved by Noboru Tsuburaya, Eiji Tsuburaya’s son who served as an executive producer alongside Bill and Joe. There was quite a lot of talent behind it. A pre-Batman TAS Andrea Romano was the voice director, Iwao Takemoto of Scooby Doo fame was a creative designer and the GOAT himself: creature designer, future film director and creator of GARO Keita Amemiya made the evil monster designs.
There is a happy ending though, Ultraman Chuck, Scott and Ultrawoman Beth would receive live action costume counterparts and participate in the greater Ultraman franchise every now and then, ensuring that they are never forgotten.
OMG ULTRAMAN AND REALLY PRETTY ANIMATION? LETS GOOOOO
6:05 correction, Ultra Q was Ultraman's precursor show, it was basically (like you said) a twilight zone-esque mini series where each episode revolves around a mysterious kaiju or seijin (alien)
Ultraman himself debuted in his title show, Ultraman, duhh
Interestingly though is that Kaiju from Ultra Q would later go on to be used in some Ultraman episodes, notably Gomess, Pagos and Peguila
Another interesting thing is that Ultraman's title card starts of swirling in a title card spelling out Ultra Q, before it bursts out in red with a new title card saying Ultraman, possibly hinting that they both take place in the same universe
This fun title card detail was also referenced in Shin Ultraman, with the title swirling in spelling out Shin Godzilla (being Hideaki Anno's previous movie) before once again bursting out in red spelling out Shin Ultraman
Edit: also i DID NOT KNOW KEZZA HENSHIN WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND!!!! THAT'S SO CUTEEE
1:07 nope it's not even weird in Ultraman standards
I know that Netflix already has a Ultraman anime based on the sequel manga, I’ve only read those so I don’t know a lot about Ultraman except that it was popular.
Speaking of Japanese properties, I think Netflix should help to produce a 3rd Stand By Me Doraemon movie. The first two are already on there with both the original Japanese version and an English dub
I think SBM 2 movie had already ended with such a perfect ending for me
This looks awesome! I hope they do other adaptations like this for other tokusatsu shows. It would be amazing to see a Kamen Rider show in this art style.
I would as well and love to see it with the 1971 version ngl
@@moondragon2295 Yes! Kamen Rider 1 would be perfect for this!
@@jaygamer7233 im not gay...but..i had a crush on 1971 takeshi hongo lol
My introduction to Ultraman was the anime series trilogy also on Netflix. It acts as a sequel to the OG show and it is kinda of different but familiar to the Ultraman franchise.
ULTRAMAN! SWEEEP
i am a big fan of tokusatsu and i am super happy ultraman deserves to shine due to there legal issues
As someone who recently got into the Ultra series and started with the first Ultraman, (and hasn’t watched Shin Ultraman yet but has seen some clips of it online) I can say that it seems that Shin Ultraman has the same style as the original series, with its wacky but charming effects, but expands on the themes of the original in more depth. It’s not required viewing but check the first show out in any way you can.
Also this Netflix movie isn’t the first time that an official American made Ultra project was made. Back in the 90’s, Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero (or Ultraman Powered as it was called in Japan) was the first and only live action Ultra show made in America (however it was not the first time the Ultra series which was made for the English speaking market, as a few years earlier, they collaborated with an Australian studio for Ultraman: Towards the Future). The show was basically a remake of the original series but for an American audience. I watched it and while I would say that I would recommend it to anyone just getting into the series but doesn’t want to read subtitles, however as a lot of people already said, it’s not very good. The human scenes give off the same vibes as the added American scenes in the first Power Rangers, which, as someone who watched the first half of the first season of Power Rangers, I don’t mind, I mean, it did come out around the same time, however the fight scenes are just so low energy. First of all, the designs of Ultraman Powered and the Kaiju are good, they are solid reimaginings of the original series’ monsters, however, they were apparently too good, due to the way they were made, they couldn’t withstand any of the rough housing that the originals could, and the show was expected to air on American television, which meant that Ultraman couldn’t throw any punches for some reason, the result was that most fights in the show are just Ultraman lightly shoving the monsters, with the occasional flip every so often, and a beam attack to finish them off. Needless to say, it didn’t do well, so much so that it didn’t even air in America, yeah, its target audience didn’t even get to see it, oof. Powered himself did appear again in several crossover films with other Ultra’s that I haven’t seen yet, but from the from the few clips I have seen, his appearance is actually pretty good, his fights have a lot more energy to them, and they even kept some of his fighting style in, adapting his light shoves into more of an open palm strike. It’s wild that people still accept Powered even if his show sucks.
Anyway, hopefully this Movie will be good.
There was also that other Netflix Ultraman animated series that had the Ultras as normal-sized people wearing Iron Man-like suits. I didn't like that one either though.
@@ablosch2452 yeah, that one was an adaptation of a manga that I haven’t read. It’s kinda neat how it’s set in a timeline where no other ultras appeared after the original, similar to the Heisei Ultraseven series which I also haven’t seen yet, (I need to finish the original Ultraseven) but I have no strong feelings about it either way. I feel like nothing new is really done with the concept of scaling down the kaiju action to a more human size, and it just doesn’t feel like Ultraman. The reason I didn’t cover it in my original comment is that it isn’t an American production, It’s a Netflix original anime that just so happens to have an English dub. I only watched the first two seasons, but maybe I’ll get around to watching its final season once I watch more Ultra series’s.
Eiji Tsuburaya was the sfx artist behind the creation of Godzilla. Toho even supported the Ultraman series for years and made their own similar show. Ultraman has deeply embedded himself across all forms of Japanese pop culture even in video games like Pokemon. The series just had a really poor distribution history in English speaking Western countries. There's a host of other reasons but I'll end it by saying the costumed performances are the highest barrier of entry and that's why they continue pushing all these animated versions and the Marvel comic book here.
The great thing is, Tsubaraya has recently been putting up a shit ton of seasons for free on TH-cam to watch! Meanwhile Toei hasn't taken the same initiative for some unholy reason so Kamen Rider and Super Sentai isn't as readily available like that for whatever reason. There's a few seasons on Tubi, like Geats and Kuuga, but not everything
@@chadderbug7587I saw a theory that unlike Tsuburaya, which only focuses on a few franchises like Redman, Gridman and Ultraman, Toei gains from several other properties in the West, mainly anime, so Toei wouldn't see as much need to expand tokusatsu in the West as Tsuburaya. This is very sad because Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are two incredible franchises
@@Iamamammoththen again it's Toei, I really doubt they see anything beyond profit.
Ultraman came before super sentai and power ranger
hes got the hollow knight eyes
yeah i agree idk why they did that because ultraman used to have white yellowish eyes with pupils now its just BLUE
Would not be the first time an Ultra had blue eyes, Ultraman Geed and 90s Ultraman , Ultraman Powered, had them.
@@KevinSmith-wm8td oh yeah i forgot about them
@@uhbambmbl406 here he does but it's absolutely subtle the white part is the pupil
@@uhbambmbl406 the pupil was never suppose to be a thing tbh it was just there for the actor to see through until they found a solution with later Ultraman which is why Shin Ultraman doesn't have it despite being based on the original concept art of Ultraman
0:25 I spotted a gravital from all tomorrows.
Yea Ultraman!!! I hope this goes well cuz i love their redesign in Gamera series recently, i've watched all seasons of Ultraman anime, and this trailer looks great!
Kaijuu and Tokusatsu for the win!
And anime too (manga is better for me)
I want to continue my Kaijune from last year, i pray my pc to be fixed at the end of this month.
5:32 as SEA people it's a part of our blood
Ultra man is back🔊🔊🔊🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I know that this isn't the first time Ultraman has been adapted for animation (there was both the Hannah-Barbera anime and that weird crossover with a Malaysian kids show), but it's weird seeing tokusatsu taken in this direction instead of just, ya know, keeping it a tokusatsu.
I love Ultraman I watched the 60s show all the time when I was a kid and even still. I love tokusatsu in general. I'm actually working on getting a comic or something like that made based on my original tokusatsu type story.
im a huge tokusatsu fan so im realy exitet about this movie
You are right that Ultraman has been in American waters via animation with The Adventure Begins, and especially the three season long Netflix Ultraman anime (that is really more Kamen Rider X Iron Man) but Ultraman has been on English terrain before with two live action shown, one of which being Ultraman Towards The Future, a show I haven’t seen but I’ve heard decent things about it, and the other being Ultraman The Ultimate Hero, one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen in my life, but hay at least it has badass monster designs
I’m a relatively new ultraman fan having gotten into the franchise last year but I absolutely love it and Tokusatsu in general!
Not entirely historic. They're still making Ultraman shows to this day. Heck, the latest Ultraman show, Ultraman Blazar, actually aired its most recent episode less than 2 months ago.
I loved ultraman as a kid And This looks pretty good.
It's not always just distributed by Netflix. Netflix owns Animal Logic, that studio already made some of their movies like The Magician's Elephant, Leo and upcoming Treehorn Family. And also some movies like Nimona, Pinocchio, The Sea Beast and Willoughbys are owned by Netflix, even if they are made by another company. Netflix fully financed them and have copyrights.
Now this looks awesome! Let's hope it doesn't flop (or atleast get cancelled).
Ultraman is a great series I've been following on and off. Also Netflix released their own Ultraman anime series which I believe concluded a couple of years back?
Woo Brighton mentioned!
I've heard of Ultraman, never seen it though. I'll be interested to check this out I suppose, the visuals look good.
If you interested the Company that Makes Ultraman Tsuburaya Productions release pretty much all of their recent series, on their Chanel Dubbed, in full.
@@thekey0123 sweet! I may check that out.
I've been an Ultraman guy since I was like 12, definitely gonna check this out
whenever any ultraman does spinning attack, me and my friends go fuckign crazy
I watched an Ultraman series over on Netflix not long ago!
It looks pretty good ngl
I've kinda always known about ultraman, I got into all things kaiju at the age of 4 after discovering Godzilla. When I was 5 I saw my first Gamera movie, which was Gamera Guardian of the Universe, and when I was 6, one of my uncles introduced me to Ultraman Powered.
Honestly, Netflix did a damn fine job adapting the Ultraman manga, so I have hope for this original project.
I think this film seems promising
Ultraman Rising looks really interesting an fun, the monster from the trailer looks like a monster from the first episode of Ultraman Tiga, the series that revived the franchise. And Ultraman Rising takes a lot of stuff from the originals, the sounds, the plot, and even the Ultraman himself looks more like Ultraman Powered than Ultraman
I'm still gonna watch it.
I'm so absolutely hyped for this! If you aren't, you absolutely should be.
I’m a huge kaiju fan, (mainly with Godzilla and ultra man) so I would love to see how this show does, especially with its nice artstyle!
Man, Its so nice seeing a genuinely nice animated project form netflix for a season or two before ultimately gutting and canceling it, and throwing it out a week after like a moldy sack of taters.
The final frame of mr fantastic lol
I'm a big Ultraman fan and am really excited about this.
ultraman was not in ultra q. how do you mess up like that.
Maybe because he's not really familiar with Ultraman tho you could argue he could've done more research.
The strangest thing is that Netflix already has an ultra man show on there XD
Yeah but that’s based on an Ultraman manga series that has a different style from the live action show.
I cannot wait for Ultraman Rising!
As an ultraman fan I am very excited to see this movie
My parents gave me several seasons of the 60s series when I was a kid, and have loved Ultraman ever since. The English dub of the 60s series is hilarious, as well as the production limitations the show ran into because the concept was so ambitious. I recommend the Ultraman Mebius series for anyone new to Ultraman as that is the most definitive Ultraman experience in regards to story, production value, and characters imo
The original shows were my childhood. ultramen tv series are very much catered for the japan audience, so it makes sense for them to try to change it
At the very least it looks much better than the Netflix Ultraman 3D anime TV show but that's not saying much
Tsuburaya, please stop trying to jump the shark
Ultraman is associated with Godzilla sometimes too like in the shin Japan heroes team there is shin Kamen Rider Eva 01 from shin evangelion and shin ULTRAMAN and shin GODZILLA I really recommend you to see shin Godzilla it's a really good film
Ultraman and Godzilla built the Tokusatsu genre with their giant hands. Without them, Super Sentai, Power Rangers, and Kamen Rider would look very different.
I've never heard of Ultraman- I've never been into superhero based things-, or even things similar to it.
But this- I like the style, genuinely. Now will I look more into Ultraman? Maybe- but I doubt it-
If you are going to check Ultraman out check out Ultraman Blazar it free on TH-cam with dual audio tracks original Japanese with multi language subs and an English dub that you can switch around.
Tbf Ultraman has alot of differences from the Typical American Superhero.
@@thekey0123 i would imagine, I guess it's just the aspect for me- but who knows, maybe I will look more into it
While you're at it, I suggest you also look into Kamen Rider and Super Sentai too.
@@Kromiball imma have to take these one step at a time lol but thank you ☺️
Are... you... SERIOUS? Oh, this better be great, after a long time of being a pessimist about the future of movies... I feel exited.
Yay more ultraman. Hopefully Netflix does something with Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.
I'm aware of this, and as a massive kaiju and Tokusatsu fan, I can't wait. Yes, it's very different from what Ultraman usually is, but I'm ok with that. If Godzilla can be an eldritch behemoth, why can't Ultraman be a father to a kaiju?
By the way, I'd highly recommend watching some Ultraman shows, they're really good. If you want any recommendations for which ones: the original Ultraman from 1966, Ultraman Tiga from 1996, and Ultraman Blazar from 2023.
