For "Intervention": Buffy is not going to Spike to find out why he didn't tell. The gang doesn't know whether he told or not, and Buffy needs to know this, because if Spike told, then she and Dawn have to leave town quickly. She doesn't trust Spike to tell the truth to her, and so goes as the Robot and leads the conversation in such a way that Spike will have to respond with either: "No need, she already knows, so don't go there", or, as he did respond, by commanding the Robot not to go because Glory doesn't know the truth yet. The kiss is for the reason Buffy states at the end: the Robot was disgusting but what Spike did for Buffy and Dawn was real. The scene is strategic and intelligent. The ending of it feels right to me, down to the puzzlement in Spike's expression at as the episode ends.
Just an FYI: the UPN outbid the WB when the show switched networks. They offered a higher budget. The season finale was treated as a series finale by the WB. They refused to advertise the show would continue on another network. Ultimately, with cable options, neither the WB nor UPN could stay afloat. They later merged into the CW. Sarah Michelle Gellar threatened to quit, but she later retracted. The higher bid included a bigger budget, which accommodated higher salaries and the rising cost of special effects. When Joyce died, their was grief in the real world. People talked about it almost as if it was a real death. I even went to see a friend at her job to tell her Buffy's mom died. A couple of her co-workers had let her know, and it was a somber day. All of my friends, who watched, made a round of phone calls. It was almost as if we had really lost someone. Wild, considering it we were all well aware it was a TV show.
At first I thought Dawn had just been living with the dad (Hank Summers) for the first 4 seasons and Dawn was now living with her mom and Buffy. It took several episodes worth of clues she was weird before I realized she was just suddenly present and I realized the show was acting like she alway had been.
Steven DeKnight was technically freelance in Season 5. Deknight was hired as a staff writer for Buffy the Animated Series. After the Animated series was delayed (it was eventually shelved before ever airing) he was given the opportunity to write a couple of episodes freelance for Buffy. He only joined the writing staff of Buffy in Season 6 as a Story Editor. Whedon moved DeKnight to Angel for Season 4 (promoting him to co-producer) as a substitute for Tim Minear who he was taking over to Firefly. DeKnight was dating Angel Exec Story Editor Mere Smith at the time. The WB didn't give Buffy an original 5 season order. Season one was a mid-season replacement that wasn't expected to last, but was mildly successful leading to season 2 being commissioned. Season two was very successful ratings wise and by the end of the year the WB were interested in a spin off as well (Angel), but even so I think it was only in mid Season three that Season 4 and 5 of Buffy (as well as Angel S1) were commissioned. There wasn't actually much chance of Buffy being cancelled at the end of S5. The move to UPN was more as a result of a bidding war. The production company wanted more money for the show so when UPN offered $2.2million an episode for a two season deal the WB couldn't compete. That $2.2m per episode wasn't actually spent on the show, its reported that the shows budget was actually lower in S6 than 5 (which I can easily believe), instead the excess was profit for 20th century Fox. Had UPN not entered the bidding war there is little doubt that the WB would have renewed the show, they'd have paid less per episode, and Fox would have made a little less profit out of it. This move though is highly unusual. Normally network shows only move where the network wants to cancel them and the studio has reasons to keep the show going (Syndication rights). So most people today assume that Buffy was cancelled by the WB and was rescued by UPN. The WB also presented the S5 finale as THE Series Finale and implied that the show was ending. There was of course a chance of it ending. There was a risk that playing hard-ball to get more money could have seen the show end, but it wasn't likely and no renewal ever really guaranteed anything, shows could always be cancelled even after renewal it just cost the network money.
God, I wish that Britney Spears would've taken the role as April!!!! The actress cast did a great job in the role, but can y'all imagine if it was Britney!?! I guess she was really a fan of the show if she insisted on actually working with the Scoobies, but damn that would've been a fun episode with her!
15:00 Small head cannon for Buffy (and Dawn's) father maybe... If he left due to the stress of Buffy's actions it could be possible that it was perceived that Joyce would be mentally strong enough to protect Dawn's secret but her father might not. So as a monk memory retcon he is pushed further away from them storywise... This would be pretty brutal (and not sure how possible) of the monks but it was a thought that occured while rewatching recently... One of the stranger aspects I am growing to like about BtVS fandom is it's collaborative storytelling around the stranger and sometimes straight up broken aspects of the show. It is a kind of lovely creativity, not unlike what's his name, you know, Tucker's brother's approach...
The only thing I'd say I didnt like about The Body (at the time I watched it) was the vampire fight at the end. At the time, it felt a bit shoehorned in, like someone said 'well, it's called buffy the vampire slayer, she has to slay a vampire'. It's been about ten years since then (I got into buffy long past its original airing) and I do feel differently about it now. It still feels wrong and like it doesn't belong, but I can see that's on purpose. Losing someone like that can feel like time has stopped, but it hasn't - Buffy doesnt stop being the slayer because Joyce died, and vampires aren't going to take a week off for that reason either.
As somebody who lost their mother to cancer (quite suddenly too, she was doing ok, got an infection and was gone within a week) the episode where Joyce dies and they deal is just so fucking real. I can't watch it without crying.
Thanks, this was fun. Season 5 is the best and my favorite for me, but season 3 and the second half of 2 close behind. And i like Mari Noxin's work, but consider it a personal difference. She wrote great comedy, and I'm a sucker for people who can do that i
I had an aneurysm at 37. All I felt was an annoying head ache for 9 days, memories of people and relatives voices talking to and around me. Most people don’t survive the kind of aneurysm don’t survive. It was the mind of my niece w that forced me to go to hospital after she was told about my headache. She insisted that I go to hospital came to get me and drove me there. The last clear memory I have is getting in her van. I had the stroke at the hospital after I had a CAT scan that the crack didn’t show up on because it was too small. Even if I had the MRI that would have shown it there was nothing they could have done it was already too late and inoperable. I believe, but have no proof that when I was in labor with my 4th child, my blood pressure was too low and I was given amphetamines to raise it to a normal level going from low up so fast did damage to the vei. causing the crack and eventual bleed and stroke. I don’t believe in revenge this is an area where people don’t understand. I did not sue the doctor for malpractice. Even I don’t believe that she plotted or planned to harm me or my baby at any time. I believe she used the standard solution for people in labor with low blood pressure. I probably would have gotten a very large sum of money, that would make my life comfortable now. This happened in 2001. No amount of money or therapy could fix the damage. To sue her to pay her back would he an act of vengeance and THAT is not MY job. It belongs to God . He even says so. Can’t convince my self that She acted with any kind of Malicious intent. If I thought so I would have sued her. I believe in Justice. I am 58 now and I am still paralyzed on my left side. This just showed up in my feed and I'm so very glad it did. Thank you for such a perfect analysis of Season Five, which has become my favorite Season, alongside Season Six. I love everything you said about each episode and yes, it definitely could have worked as a Series Finale but I'm glad it didn't because my Spuffy heart needed most of what we got in the last two Seasons. Except for that one episode in Season Six which I've head canoned out of existence. I'll save what I think about it after watching your Season Six analysis, which I may save for after I watch Seasons One thru Four. Possibly after Season Seven so I can save the best for last.
Best villain, narrative arc, twists and characters introduction. This is the most emotional season and one of the best. I think it could be my favorite if it was the last and if other characters were more developed but the writting is excellent.
Buffy/Angel has a serious problem reusing names/titles in both series for two entirely different groups/people. The Vampiric Scourge of Europe in Buffy vs the Demonic Scourge from Angel. Gwendolyn Post wants a lightning glove in Buffy, Gwen Raiden has lighting powers in Angel. Even the Beast get's reused for Glory and the eclipse demon.
Funny you should mention that because I’ve been watching Season 7 for the next video, and so many of its plot devices are eerily similar to Season 4 of Angel, which aired alongside it. I’ll cover it all in my video but things like the villain taking form of former/current character(s), and a specific phrase that’s repeated throughout the season; (“the answer is among you”, “From beneath you, it devours”) have already made me notice the similarities.
@@episodicanalysis It's a big focus of my current Buffy fanfic. So I've been really noticing a lot of doubling up on names/themes. It could come across as lazy (like when Anya repeats Tara's plotline only 6 episodes later) But I think it's showing Anya didn't know she was allowed to feel concerned about that kind of thing until Tara freaked out and Anya realized "normal" people get sad/nervous too. And when plots get used in Buffy and Angel, I think it's meant to highlight how we handle things differently as teens than we do as adults. As teens, everything is idealized so you can have Buffy lied to after saking Ford. But Angel had to face his own sins when he staked his crazy childe in S1. Teens get the illusion of black and white (buffy saying no killing of humans and almost all demons are just evil), adults face greys and how difficult life really is, so those same themes need a different form of resolution.
@@kyleellis1825 I like that idea of seeing how different age groups handle an issue, you raise a great point. And when it comes to real-life issues that are disguised in demon form for the shows, I think it can work and be different enough from how one show handled that topic to how the other show handled that topic, whatever it may be. I think Angel and Buffy showcase two different writing styles, both of which are completely valid ways to write a story, and S4 of Angel and S7 of Buffy are a good comparison for these two styles; Buffy is methodically planned, and the writers know what’s going to happen and for how long, sometimes even seasons before it does. They know who’s going to die, how the gang will overcome the villain, etc, all from the very start of the season. S7 was a perfect example of this; they knew what they wanted to do to end the show and (while some don’t particularly enjoy it) I found the ending to be confidently sufficient. Angel is a show that, aside from S5, mostly has a few ideas of how things will go during the season, but makes a lot of it up in the moment to fill in the blanks and/or up the stakes. S4 was a mish-mash of about five different ideas in one season, causing it to feel inconsistent as certain writers would get more time to pan out their ideas for a few episodes before someone else gets to do the same afterwards and negates what the first writer started. When you write fan fiction, I’m keen to know what kind of writing style you use. Because both work in their own ways, I just used a bad example with S4 of Angel, but which do you find yourself drawn to more?
@@episodicanalysis That is a very good point on how the stories are told differently. Angel (except for season 5) never had a Big Bad planned out properly. Angel probably would have done better with the newer 12 episode style and been a 10 season show. My own issues with Season 7 of Buffy are that sometimes it feels like it was setting up a spin off/sequel about the Potentials and sometimes it seems like it's trying to wrap up the series. None of the plotline stuff bothered me, I really liked S7 myself. I just wanted more time to know the new girls. I feel that if they had given us less potentials as actual additions to the cast it would have worked a bit better. (have Giles bring 3, find Rona at bus stop, and find Amanda.). They should have done this by episode 3 and given each of the 5 potentials an episode (instead of just one for Kennedy and one for Amanda, since those 2 episodes are more of a Willow or Dawn one anyway) Or if they got a spin off, they could have stuck with the amount of Potentials they did have in the show and we could have gotten to know them in the spin off. ... When I write (fanfiction or my own book), I come up with an outline of the overall story and then fill it in more on each pass. Maybe a paragraph or two on the overall plot at first, before I start going back and filling in things I want certain characters to do or themes I want to explore. I know I want a character to die/be in a relationship/get a power up, at a certain point. I just don't always know who it would work best with and am willing to change my initial choice if chemistry in the story changes. I really want to avoid the JK Rowling epilogue problem (she wrote the epilogue same time as book 1 and forced the story to fit the epilogue, instead of changing the epilogue as the story evolved.). So my plans are all adaptable.
@@kyleellis1825 I'm currently about eight episodes in S7 so the Potentials haven't popped up yet but I understand what you mean. There was a spin-off planned for both them and Faith, neither of which worked out, and they do focus an awful lot on them for it being the final season of "Buffy". I'm surprised that I'm enjoying S7, due to how much people dislike it online, it's far from the best season of the show, but it's nowhere near the worst. When it comes to your writing style, that's a fair way to plan it all out. I didn't know that tidbit about JK Rowling, definitely a poor way to end that grand story, and then it got another book after that (Cursed Child, I think?) which shows she was open to continuing and changing the original ending to accommodate further stories. Angel working with 12 episodes instead of 22 would be interesting. Maybe there would be more of a focus on the team, as opposed to the cases, which is a vital part of what makes Angel the show it was.
You stated that Amy Adams' character was in 3 scenes and "had no dialogue at all", yet you presented said-scenes post editing and she CLEARLY spoke in all 3. Did you even watch the episode, dude? It's been YEARS since I last watched the show, but I remember it so vividly, including all 3 scenes where she spoke. Man, you're not the most "reliable" of critics. XD
I just want to write that my name is Josh and i want to write that on October 1, 2022 the FUSE channel began airing reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer all seven days of the week. the FUSE channel won the syndication rights to all seven seasons Buffy the Vampire Slayer. People who are lucky enough to have the FUSE channel can watch and DVR reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer seven days a week anytime they want to.
And I have been watching the series every day for the past several months as a result even though I’ve seen the entire series several times over already starting when I was a kid 25 years ago lol
I forgot Dawn wasn’t actually Buffy’s sister ! Like I remember she was 24:15 the Key & all that ! But recently I thought they she really was sisters but Dawns blood was the Key ! I haven’t seen Buffy since I was a Child ! I remember certain things cause I’ve rewatched plenty times back then but now here’s a lot I don’t remember !
Hey, thanks a lot! If you're referring to money tips, I currently don't have anywhere that people can donate to the channel. TH-cam doesn't open that feature until I reach 1000 subscribers, however I've bandied about with the idea of a Patreon. I'm not sure if enough people would be open to giving money to the channel monthly, but the offer from yourself is greatly appreciated :)
Olaf isn't a villain. He's a victim that got summoned to Earth against his will (after already being turned into a troll for acting how his entire culture did).
I didn’t notice it on TV, years ago I have been watching it streaming and I noticed that the female cast were not wearing bra’s. Buffy and Anya, Willow, not wearing a bra, not offended just a sudden realization that they are not wearing bras sometimes the bra should have been worn.
Ahh to watch 90s - 00s shows again 😂😂😂 Random fact: Jim Belushi made his costar Cheryl wear extra padding after a few seasons cuz she ALWAYS showed no matter what 👍
I actually hate the episode where Buffy's mom dies. In fact, I always, always skip it whenever I rewatch the series. It's a good episode, but it hits too close to home for me personally as my Mom nearly died the same way. Luckily, my dad recognized that something was wrong and got her to the hospital, before what happened to Joyce happened to my mom.
@@tFighterPilot Nice. I like the idea. I hate the execution. The writing in this season feels like it was written by an edgy teenager. And it destroys all of the character development that they spend seasons building up.

XD
Bro doesn't understand hyperbole
I remember certain things cause I’ve rewatched plenty times back then but now here’s a lot I don’t remember !
just discovered your videos and i love them. can i leave you a tip anywhere?
Hey, thanks a lot! If you're referring to money tips, I currently don't have anywhere that people can donate to the channel. TH-cam doesn't open that feature until I reach 1000 subscribers, however I've bandied about with the idea of a Patreon. I'm not sure if enough people would be open to giving money to the channel monthly, but the offer from yourself is greatly appreciated :)
@@episodicanalysisI saw you were at 999 and subscribed.😊
DRACULA WAS BEYOND STUPID.
this is when they suck the life out of the show and make everything a depressing mess. a little drama goes A LONG WAY!
Olaf > every other villain. Don't @ me.
Olaf isn't a villain. He's a victim that got summoned to Earth against his will (after already being turned into a troll for acting how his entire culture did).
4:34 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If dawn isnt really your sister you would "freak" out too.
I didn’t notice it on TV, years ago I have been watching it streaming and I noticed that the female cast were not wearing bra’s. Buffy and Anya, Willow, not wearing a bra, not offended just a sudden realization that they are not wearing bras sometimes the bra should have been worn.
Ahh to watch 90s - 00s shows again 😂😂😂
Random fact: Jim Belushi made his costar Cheryl wear extra padding after a few seasons cuz she ALWAYS showed no matter what 👍
I actually hate the episode where Buffy's mom dies. In fact, I always, always skip it whenever I rewatch the series. It's a good episode, but it hits too close to home for me personally as my Mom nearly died the same way. Luckily, my dad recognized that something was wrong and got her to the hospital, before what happened to Joyce happened to my mom.
No need for hate then... Just dislike
I'm currently rewatching Buffy and this season is my least favorite that's why I'm skipping watching us and just watching this video instead. Thanks
Unpopular opinion. The show should have ended after Season 5. The last 2 seasons destroyed the show's ranking for me.
I liked season 6 for making the real big bad the friends we made along the way.
@@tFighterPilot Nice. I like the idea. I hate the execution. The writing in this season feels like it was written by an edgy teenager. And it destroys all of the character development that they spend seasons building up.
Don'tmake anti vax jokes you don't want to run the risk of being identified with those jokers.
The pro vacks jokers, you mean.
