    Stand alone episodes, characters development, humour, fights, it could be the best season with a better main plot and villain. But it aged well and I think this season is underrated, I loved it. The last episode is my favorite of the show.

    46:55 You should have mentioned one of the greatest, most profound, most tragic bits of dialogue ever in the show in that episode. Where Faith is wailing on Buffy… but wailing on herself saying how she’s nothing, a POS, displaying her self hatred. Wow that’s good stuff.

    For me personally the best season and the season finale "Restless" one of the best hours of television ever created...

    Kathy's "demon master" is her FATHER, my man. As if it wasn't obvious enough, he referred to her as "young lady" and Kathy spoke back in a way any daughters would to their parents. Haha

    This is why I love the Internet. Some of your least favourite seasons and episodes are my favourite, goes to show that even people who enjoy the same thing perceive it so differently

    13:15 I think the reason they didn’t explore Giles’ fear in this episode is because it was already shown in ‘Nightmares’. His greatest fear was actually Buffy’s death. He said so when they stood over her grave before she came back as a vampire. He fears failing her as a watcher, or well more importantly as a father. ‘Fear, Iteself’ was good in showcasing the changes, growth, and foreshadowing of the other characters’ journeys during their college years. Whereas Giles is already a grown man. His fear(s) may not change much if at all. I think they overall didn’t really give Giles much of an arc this season but I also understand why they didn’t give him much to do in this episode other than be badass with a chainsaw.
    By the way, I’m loving these episodic analysis videos. I’ve been bingeing them all week! 😎☺️ Buffy and Angel are 2 of my most favorite shows of all time.

    The scene where Adam kills the boy is likely a reference to Frankenstein, although in the book, it was a little girl, as I recall.

    It's a testament to how good a show Buffy is when even the worst season has some absolute dingers like Something Blue and Hush, sadly it's still stuck with Beer Bad and the somehow even worse Where the Wild Things Are

    This is one of my fav seasons along with Season 5. There are several outstanding, funny, interesting episodes in this season! Hush. Something Blue. Pangs. Restless. Come on! How does ANYBODY hate this season??

    Season 4 has some of the best individual episodes, super funny in spots (I even like Beer Bad) but the big bad was the weakest of the series and the overall arc is just not measuring up to the rest of the show. Adam was totally unnecessary. Being sandwiched between 3 and 5 only highlights how weak it is.

      I read somewhere that Sunday was originally going to be the big bad because she was a Slayer who got sired in the early 1980s by Spike. But Joss didn't think it'd bode well with fans because they had already had Slayer against Slayer in S3.

  • @x-man9473
    @x-man9473 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Your criticism about the chip in "Doomed" was an odd criticism.
    Riley said the chip prevented him from hurting "living beings". Spike can hurt demons. Demons (like Spike himself) are generally dead. They don't qualify as "living beings". Most people even assume that when they see the episodes for the first time.
    How you failed on that during a retrospect review is odd. Either way, your overall content is still great.

    • @rhythmchyc3089
      @rhythmchyc3089 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think vampires are dead but other supernatural creatures like werewolves and demons (like Anya) are alive. And Spike was attacking humans like Willow and one of the doctors he pushed away to escape.

    I did not like the new whwe wolf design. The new one looks like a harry chimpanzee in an angora sweater, being toohuman looking The first wolf design was a little hokey but at least it looked like a wolf. Much better than the new version.

    Seems both the show and Giles go through a midlife crisis this season 😂

  • @jesusdelcanto9715
    @jesusdelcanto9715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Season 4 is my second favourite after 3. While I agree with many criticisms about the problems of the main arc, I don't support others. The crisis that the main characters, Giles included, go through here, it's not an issue of poor writing rather a progression in development for all of them. Xander was raised in a dysfunctional family and young adults usually have many difficults moving on from them, as we see here. Giles is kinda lost because he was kicked out from the Watchers and this helped him to look for other aspects and projects in his life. Willow is now self confident and can have other friends besides the Scoobies. She also has a couple crisis with Oz, an important one. The scene where Willow tells Buffy she is dating Tara is extremely realistic and provides a good example about what means supporting friends. Even the mother/boss relationship between Riley and Walsh shows the type of interactions many people have with their families and/or superiors at work, how they can be mixed. Seriously, what we see in Season 4 is an excellent depiction of beginning college and how these people deal with this transition in life, totally in character.

    Where the wild things are is actually pretty good, once you get passed the ridiculous plot of an Orgasm demon released because Buffy and Riley are having so much sex (its a bloody Frat house). There are great character moments for Xander, Anya, Spike and Giles (Singing behind blue eyes). The premise of the plot was likely contrived as a means of having a Buffy light episode given SMG was filming Angel and given how terrible the central premise is the episode is actually amazing.
    The Big bad in Season 4 wasn't really Adam, it was the Scoobies growing apart as they grew up and moved on and the episode follows this theme to some extent. The original plan as far as I understood was for Buffy to be torn between Maggie and Giles, although exactly what that would have meant I don't know.
    I wouldn't obsess over which of the seasons were added to Whedon's original plan. It was made up as they went along, there were ideas for the future that might and would be used, but they had no knowledge at the start of Season 4 that the show would go on for four more years, ideas for the future were just that something that might be done later on if the show was still running. At the end of Season 3 Whedon wrote the cryptic counting down to 7-3-0 to foreshadow Buffy's death at the end of Season 5, that's likely as far as his five year plan went (and was likely only planned from the end of season 3).
