I have noticed I feel like I’m being impolite to have food preferences, especially healthy ones. Most people I know have no problem expressing their preferences and some, not all, act like it should be yours too. But recently I did notice a friend copying me at a restaurant. I have lost weight since reducing processed carbs and sugar. I order sandwiches without bread which wait staff seem to be quite accustomed to. She removed her bread and didn’t eat it. I smiled inside.
Vegans love to say, " You are what you eat."then proceed eating twigs and berries. Carnivores say," You are what you eat.", then eat seafood, which is either a bottom feeders or eats bottom feeders. The only fish I can stomach is fermented fish in the form of worchestershire sauce.
I've lived in Maine my entire life, Fresh seafood is everywhere here. I feel the same way. Seafood, lake fish, whatever ... it all makes me nauseous to be near it. That smell is just not agreeing with something in my brain.
I definitely had to learn to "like" (ish?) sardines. Can eat them now and sometime even crave them. But i would never have thought about it if it wasn't for the you tube keto/carnivore influencers i follow. Social influence through your "tribe" makes a hugh difference. Thanks Nick for another thoughtful video.
@@salleone6387 I make a salad similar to tuna salad. Avocado mayo, dill relish and sardines...sometimes I add grated parm cheese. I eat on a chaffle sandwich or use parmesan Cheese Crisps like crackers.
I got obese liking all of that, pizza, fries, icecream. When i went keto i could go weeks without but i would always end up slipping back in to bad habits. Since ive gone carnivore ive had next to no slip ups and when i have even just like 1 slice of pizza it makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable. Ice cream makes me feel nauseous, its way too sweet. I now love the taste of meat over everything else and all of my snack foods are meat based. About once every three months i make a protein cheesecake with monkfruit/eryhtritol sweetener (about a quarter of the amount a sugar based one uses). The rest of my family are still high carb, but it doesn't affect me at all now. I always make extra of my meat based foods and my kids have started snacking more on meat and less on chips/cookies etc.
Yes, you do something nice, be successful in a task and people reward you with lollies, sweets, cake or Mc Donald's, that is how we socially learn as kids. Why not switch over to scrambled egg or biltong as a reward, or a steak bbq rather than cheap mince meat every day family budget healthy eating. Me personally I got never enough scrambled egg, when I was a kid and I still love it and every hotel buffet gets swept empty, if I come for breakfast now on a keto lifestyle and I don't bother what other guests think. Add lots of bacon and I will be a very happy bunny.
Unironically, when I was with my vegan and vegetarian friends I did in fact eat seed oils galore, and a ton of carbs and very little to no protein.. :/
No way, Nick! I could never be programmed to eat insects. 😂🤣 I'll just keep making delicious low-carb recipes and hope my family comes around eventually.

Hi, Nick! Thank you for another informative video! In case you didn't see DM on Instagram or don't answer DMs, I'd like to ask you an off topic question and I hope you can give some insight. Is it possible for non-keto people to have a metabolic triad similar to LMHR? It's been bothering me for 6 months now, as my blood work shows elevated LDL, HDL an low tris 6 month ago and it still has this trait as of today. I also decided to check my VLDL and it is pretty low, apoB/apoA1 is 0.6, which should be fine, and apoB is 100mg/l, which is okay too. I'm not on keto, I eat whatever, I'm not too lean (est. 13-15% bf) and I'm Asian. Is there any data or study on this matter? 🙏
I managed to convince myself to love natto, the soybean sweatsock-smelling slimefest which is the source of the health tonic nattokinase. The first time I tried it, I thought I was going to throw up. Sorry about that. The stats on this video are telling a similar story… playing around with different styles to see what lands… seems this one might have been “over-edited” … live and learn… I’m still new to this
My sister just asked me the other day, "What is Keto?" As I started to explain, she said "forget it. I don't really want to know"! 😂 That is the reality of this way of eating. I just order my food, let others order theirs, and hope no one says anything. But I have added foods to my diet that I hated. I just kept trying them and adding things that I did like to them. Now, I like them. Nick, you said you eat salmon every day. Have you always liked salmon? Or did you 'train' yourself to like it?
I hate salmon, fortunately grass fed beef has a decent amount of omega 3, not as much as salmon obviously but when it's 80% of your diet it still adds up.
I think this probably varies from person to person and has limitations. Some people are much more socially swayed. I've always been a picky eater, who if the group was eating something I didn't like I just wouldn't eat. I am the only low carb person I know and have been for almost 20 years. That being said, I got that idea from the internet, and often watch low carb content, which does help maintain my enthusiasm for it. Steak and eggs have always been 2 of my favorite foods though, so it's not that hard to do.
Definitely think the internet has a similar influence on us as IRL face to face interactions. Binge watching low carbers, carnivores, healthy influencers definitely has been a huge help in swaying me towards generally low carb/keto eating and staying healthy overall.
20 years ago my husband hated dark chocolate. Now he doesn’t like milk chocolate! It can be done. Just go a little bit at a time. Humans can do anything they set their minds to. ❤️🍀
Waking up covered in nasty foul smelling chocolate vomit at age 4 made me never eat it again. I cannot stand even the thought of chocolate . Thank you baby sitter for allowing a 4 tear old me to eat a 2 pound solid easter bunny then make me take a nap. So glad I hate chocolate, seriously.
This then leads to the question, if innate food preferences can be dominated by learned preferences, can innate behaviors, like expressing empathy, be dominated by learned behaviors, like being aggressive? Admittedly, there is a certain degree of supposition involved imposing this question. Nonetheless ...
You missed the obvious. Watching keto or carnivore videos, made by likable people, that talk about and show eating a juicy steak, roasted pork belly, and other low carb foods, all reinforce positive feelings.
This explains a lot. For the past couple of months, due to a family crisis, I’ve been having more meals out with family at restaurants. None of them favor my ketovore way of eating, or even low carb for that matter, even though 1 is diabetic. During this period, because of lack of time, I also haven’t followed my usual TH-cam channels on any regular schedule. Hence, I was removed from my regular “support group”. Subconsciously, I think I fell back to eating, not completely, the SAD diet. I still paid attention, poor though it was, to what I ate, but had more cravings than my usual one (ice cream). Needless to say my body has suffered as a result. I just “ fell in with the crowd”. Now that I’m aware of the subconscious influence of such communal eating, I will try to find ways to overcome this. Really glad I watched this.
Through experimentation I've found that I can change my taste preferences. I recently started eating 100% cocoa, which is quite bitter. The first time I ate it, it turned my face inside out. Now I look forward to mixing cocoa powder into my breakfast drink and miss the strong taste if some other ingredient lessens it.
Thanks as always for discussing cool publications like this! However I wonder which factors are more potent in driving food preferences… the (slightly / purposefully addictive) comfort element of ultra processed stuff that’s promising a very „fast“ energy kick in a high-energy yet malnourishing diet - after all, I believe the bottom line is to make sure we get what we experience we need, in any way possible. Plus being prone to „love“ certain sensory experiences or food combinations more than others. Plus the microbiome element, those (crap-loving) potent gut bugs are the first and foremost guests at our table and really want there habitual 🍕meal, too, right? 🍽️ Any further thoughts? Anecdote: I’m the first on in my family having switched to a ketogenic diet. Loving it, can’t wait to share my food with many many others though. My little nephews of 3 and 6 seem to be the most open to my fatty chicken soup, even omitted the bread 😊 so they’re for sure the least culturally programmed. Another nephew of four however is brought up by strict vegans and doesn’t even touch my soup with his eyes 😂
Good theory, but a house of cards. I went totally Keto, for two and a half years. Then I found out you should be on Keto 6 months and off and back on if you want. I couldn't get off. I finally got on something I called Blue (zone) Keto. Still LOW carbs but over all fairly healthy, and I could maintain it. I had to have an operation, major, and was in a rehab facility for two weeks. I ate what I was given. However I ate alone in my room. Now I crave carbs and sweets and I don't want to go back on Keto, Blue Zone or otherwise. No social anything was involved in any of this. I don't go out and I don't eat with other people and I don't use prepackaged or processed foods. Except for bread, dried pasta, and some can goods. All this and the American diet, I'm there.
Nick I just bought a smart watch that registers AGEs as a measure of metabolic health. I understand this is because a smart watch or smart phone does not typically have an insulin sensor. Still I would appreciate your learned comments.
Interesting, I might be influencing people to choose foods not highly process and reduce their carbs. We had pizza at the office I scrapped the toppings off a slice onto my salad. When there are donuts in the office I am eating a meat stick. I've noticed that a dozen donuts last a lot longer than they use too. Also there seems to be more people watching their weight. So maybe I've had an impact. Hard to miss how much weight I have lost since last thanks giving. Yeah it goes further, when somebody was looking at the menu on the wall at a cafe I have lunch at every work day, I suggested they try the grilled chicken salad. Yeah I am that guy. One less sandwich with fries where consumed that day
I teach my patients to dress up their keto meals. Play your favorite music when preparing the food, share the meal with a good friend, burn your favorite incense, wear your favorite clothes, etc... The way you learn to enjoy something new is to associate it with things you already find pleasurable.
This is literally what i did 3 years ago. Every time i eat, i only want the heathiest food i can eat, that has the most benift for my body. Now it's an obsession.
A few people have reported that even if you dislike cilantro, spending a few weeks in Vietnam eating out, where most such food includes cilantro, will give you at least a tolerance for it if not a liking…
Not in enough depth for me. Such as, are some people less influenced socially? How much might personality play a part? How much might your family contribute, and will that change with how much social exposure you have? I LOVE vegetables, but preferentially eating those in social settings has not changed other's preferences. Sometimes I do eat things I don't like due to social circumstances, but my preferences haven't changed. What has changed my preferences has been not eating certain foods and losing the pleasure in those foods. Although giving up flour products has not changed my love of flour products. I keep up the elimination of flour products because that has resulted in my joints no longer hurting. 😊 n=1.
Pizza .. ahhhh yes. Now ask yourself, what about pizza do you really enjoy? The crust or all the goodies on top? I know people that pull the gooey mess off the crust and eat just that, and quite honestly that is what I actually enjoy about pizza .. the toppings. So my pizza comes on a plate without crust, quick hit under the broiler to melt the cheese and I am a happy camper. Spaghetti .. no pasta. I started making killer meatballs, after all its the meat and the sauce I enjoy. Cheesecake. No crust, use parchment paper at the bottom and sides of the spring pan, make the cake like always (cream cheese and egg yokes!) , with one exception no sugar, yes Nick I use allulose. Thanks Nick!! As always
Bearded Dragons will watch other bearded dragons to see if food is safe etc. Ancient humans probably did the same shit "omg that dude eating that bug mound.... he keeps going back, fuck that it's mine!" Wonder if it has to do with the idea of scarcity at all, like because of survival mechanisms
I generally agree; however, my spouse loves licorice which I’ve always found disgusting, and three decades of watching licorice being eaten hasn’t changed my reaction to licorice one bit. Though, I read at least a decade ago if you will eat that disliked food, you will learn to like it if it’s got carbs.
It seems believing you can learn to like any food is helpful. This video will most definitely make strides toward that end. Picturing how a food is supporting my body and in the reverse picturing the damage the unhealthy food is doing has slowly changed my mindset. Another interesting note. Children have to taste a food 15 times before becoming accustom to it. When introducing a food just take a taste if possible and don't try to eat an entire meal.
I learn how to cook boiled duck eggs and vegetables using spices and mainly tomatoes , I know this is really bland before it became my staples when i have no new ideas what to cook for a day! Eventually i had a flashback of Rattatouille because this rat had passion about making his brain a catalog of taste based on fresh ingredients, i would've passed social interactions at first because i learned this techniques from internet instead of outdoor and local restaurant. My cases i don't know what to decribe it.😅
Great piece but not sure we needed any mouse models to tell us that taste is socially constructed and modifiable. I know I am probably missing the nuance of the neurological pathways in this comment!
I'm basically addicted to sugar. I will try something. I will stop eating sweet things, but when I get a craving for sugar, I will microdose 100mg-500mg psylocibin instead. I'll do this until I completely stop craving sweet shit for more than a month. Some REAL re-wiring shit. WooHoo!
You asked for comments on the balance between high end technical content versus "so what" practical content. This will obviously depend on the technical background of your subscribers and given your interest in expanding your reach, clearly more on the practical makes a lot of sense. To maintain your credibility to the new audience, you can still have some of the highly technical content. For me personally, a PhD who edits a journal, I love the technical content and love seeing your excitement about it, but I may not me your primary audience.
I totally hear you. Thanks. It’s about building an intellectual ecosystem. If you want to scale you need the “hero” content (eg 720 eggs)… but what I love most is the Cell Science and Nature breakdowns… it’s just they have a ceiling on audience… which is likewise relevant. But I’m determined to keep the heart and soul of what I love in the content ecosystem if that makes sense

I’m the first on in my family having switched to a ketogenic diet.
So basically you are just changing your mind on a given topic. I think this is actually a lot less complicated than what the science might imply.
I spend exactly 6 hour on a bike going from a carb junkie to totally free of cravings.
SPOT ON CORRECT 💯
Thanks :)
Trust me, the inflammation and pain I get from succumbing to junk is enough to stop me succumbing too often 🍖🍗🥩🥓🥚🍳
It’s true, I used to not like meat at all, so I had no worries about eating too much of it. The more meat I eat, the more I look forward to eating it.
Grains are just killer
No one will ever stop missing them but we have to stop eating em!
Pizza ..
As always
That’s called eating melted cheese
Bearded Dragons will watch other bearded dragons to see if food is safe etc.
Ancient humans probably did the same shit "omg that dude eating that bug mound.... he keeps going back, fuck that it's mine!"
Wonder if it has to do with the idea of scarcity at all, like because of survival mechanisms
Lol. Made me laugh.
@nicknorowitzPhD
Loving the short format. And inspired my 9th grader to do her biology project on this published article. 🎉
LOVE THIS!
I see no need to want to like licorice... although I love me some licorice tea... but not the black sweet stuff
Thanks for this! Hope it helps! I didn't know the "15" times stat. Thanks. Where is it from?
May be Americans need to come to Europe to learn how to make healthier food choices
I’ll accept the invite!
My cases i don't know what to decribe it.😅
Thanks for sharing. Also it's a very cute movie.
Fascinating and amazing, but somehow not surprising to me. Excited to read - and digest - this paper.
Good for you!
Ohh, now I need to not only make friends, but also make high-quality friends? Here we go again!
Get on it ;).
Great piece but not sure we needed any mouse models to tell us that taste is socially constructed and modifiable. I know I am probably missing the nuance of the neurological pathways in this comment!
Whatever information is useful to you... seek it... I tend to get very excited about mechanism... it's kinda my thing.
321. You are now hypnotized. Food fashion is a thing.
Do tell...
Ketchup is the worst-smelling food in the world - to me. I wonder where that came from.
I don’t like it either
Norwitz my GOAT
Awe. Thanks!
What a great episode, Nick! Keep up the great work.
Thanks. Love your little profile avatar.
I think I need an Amygdala transplant!
😂
I'm basically addicted to sugar. I will try something. I will stop eating sweet things, but when I get a craving for sugar, I will microdose 100mg-500mg psylocibin instead. I'll do this until I completely stop craving sweet shit for more than a month. Some REAL re-wiring shit. WooHoo!
Watchin this with a Hershey bar in my hands 😢
You can do better in the chocolate realm…
@@nicknorwitzPhD Makes complete sense. Successful communicators love what they do and have a plan for what to invest their limited time and energy in (typically their comparative advantage). Your channel has many directional options because you have multiple skill sets.
So obligatory southerner PSA,
A pecan(puh-cawn) is a tasty snack that makes one hell of a pie.
A pecan(pee can) is something you keep under your bed to make it through the night.
Brought to you by my father-in-law an 87 year old Alabama man.
LOL!!!😂
@@nicknorwitzPhD This of course was brought to you by the same gentleman who gave us:
“Well doc, I reckon that anybody that doesn’t already have diabetes, is a pre-diabetic”
(Read in an educated deeply southern accent)
Thanks for your contributions to the low carb communities.
I generally like healthy food. Always have. But the unhealthy food surpasses healthy in taste.
I disagree - and in this case opinions do matter ;).
@@nicknorwitzPhD I suppose there's no accounting for taste.
Let´s rewire our brains.
Sounds fun
Unrealistic to most people, I would say.
Do you want to be like most people?
@@nicknorwitzPhD My point is that I find too difficult to meet people with this same way of eating. I just have to deal with it. And I believe the same applies to most. I' am kind of "alone" with this.
Doc I hate fish.
Even the Swedish ones?
@@nicknorwitzPhDlove the the Swedish ones, LOL.
No matter how hard I try, I just can't get into eating seafood. It's a major flaw in my head. I'm sure of it.
I eat seafood for breakfast. We are Norwegian and everything from the ocean, lakes is prized food, especially codfish balls with creamy fish gravy in toast. Now that I'm carnivore, no toast or gravy but the codfish balls are my favorite breakfast.
I can't imagine not like a good buttered lobster... or bacon wrapped scallops... so good!
@@meatdog I usually have scrambled eggs with ground pork and cheddar cheese. We humans have diverse senses of taste for sure.
@@nicknorwitzPhD I hear you. I don't get it either. It must be genetic in some humans. The smell of lobster cooking is absolutely revolting to me.
@@nicknorwitzPhD Yeah bacon and butter, really healthy foods...
Brain regions, chemistry, circuits, don't really explain anything we don't already practically know. Humans are creatures of habit. Start new healthy habits and that's what you'll come to prefer.
