    Don't worry about how fast Mike is. It was your "old man sailing" that got me hooked. 90% more work for 10 or 15% more speed isn't my idea of fun.

    I always put my dinghy upside down over the forehatch in bad weather. That way I can leave the hatch open for ventilation without the rain getting in.

    I guess it is all relative, I sail with a Macgregor 27 off the coast of Canada in the North Atlantic 30 knot winds are just a "fast sail" day. At 40, that is only for the good guys to go out for a cruise, at 50 everyone decides to stay moored or at dock, but 55 plus is serious enough to secure everything.
    But then again, boats get lost, usually in open sea late season with guys leaving late for the south.

      I thought that in some areas you were recently, you reported that theft of the dinghy motors from the sailing vessels was a very real problem. I know that in the last few weeks, Holly Martin and her mother have been shopping - in Panama - for necessary items including a Go Pro camera stolen from her boat. I know sailing is supposed to be a better way of life, but not if you have to replace expensive outboard. What is the world coming to? I know in Zululand, they are most likely to steal the dinghy plus the motor from yachts, but that is a Robin (pun intended ) Hood idea - take from the affluent and redistribute to the poor - or greedy!

      @Garryck-1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.. you're supposed to have already planned for such a possibility, and have your sails rigged so they're ready for immediate use as a backup. The anchors are Plan C, not Plan B. (And yes, they too are supposed to be set up ready for instant deployment, in case they're needed.)

      Ok.. I have a little more info now.. seems Sailing Zatara were there just four days after it happened. th-cam.com/video/rb9iGMmFN0U/w-d-xo.html Their primary mistake was exiting the pass in the dark, which frankly, is bloody stupid of them. To one side of the pass entrance were several diving buoys, which were marked on the chart, so they really ought to have been aware of them. Apparently the line from a buoy got tangled around the prop shaft, at which point they then tried to sail out. In this case, yes, as soon as they realised they had a line wrapped around the shaft, they should have gone straight to Plan C and dropped the anchor before cutting the boat free. Next thing to be damaged (apparently by the line?) was their rudder.. which makes yet another reason I think spade rudders don't belong on cruising boats.
      It beats me why so few people fit line-cutters to their prop shafts.. it's not like they're hard to come by. And on something like a brand-new Dufour (which this was) it really ought to be standard equipment.

  • @charlieford5523
    @charlieford5523 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I watch a lot of the sailing channels and they seem to be getting a lot more violent weather systems. I looked up hurricanes in 2000 there were 8 in 2018/2019 there were 31 hurricanes and tropical storms.

    • @JCrook1028
      @JCrook1028 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stop changing numbers to try and make a point. 2000 - 8 hurricanes/15 total named storms. 2018 - 8 hurricanes/15 total storms. 2019 - 4 hurricanes/17 total named storms so far. Funny when you look at actual facts and compare apples to apples the numbers are nearly identical.

    • @JCrook1028

      @@charlieford5523 Thing is tho you switched terms. 2000 you only counted hurricanes. 2018/2019 you included all named storms. That's not an issue of a different source. That's either ignorance or deliberately manipulating data. On a personal note, sorry, I don't put my legal full name out on every tom/dick and harry internet site. That's really not a smart idea...

    Home from home Barry. Yachts sunk in Plymouth and two on the Devon banks at Cargreen, up the Tamar over the past 3 weeks! Don't think there's much hope for the grounded ones as no real high water until at least March. Enjoy yourself.
