Because we have other boats in our flotilla that are still using the original petrol Isotta compressor engines. As T56 was restored the decision was made to convert her to diesel. The diesel engines made it possible for the other boats to survive due the lack of spare parts and engines out there. T56 is now even faster, cheaper and easier to maintain then she was with her petrol isotta engines. The engines we have are VERY similar to Isotta, it's basically the same constrution made by CRM motori (they still construct these engines)
There was no playwood. It was aluminium and steel with very small spant, dont know the word. And after the years were the boats were hopping between the waves it was no plane surface
My dad was a coxswain on the fairmiles up around New Guinea during the second world war. Been gone for a number of years now, but he would have loved this video. Love ya dad
Loved the video, especially the side by side. The sound, the speed, on plane so solid and smooth, beautiful. I was a Sea Scout when I was a teenager. We had a PT hull remolded for a Scout boat. She was the Tiger Shark, out of Richmond, California on the San Francisco Bay. It had twin 671 diesels. It wouldn’t do 50 knots, but it would still haul ass! Weekend cruises up the Sacramento and all the sloughs. Summer cruises were down to Santa Cruz. Some of the most fun and best memories.
Was it an AVR or a PT? I was on SSS REVENGE out of the Naval Supply Center Oakland (aka Piedmont ship 16). Ours was an AVR with the Hall-Scott V-12s swapped for twin GM 8V71s. We topped out at about 15kts.
I drive an 18 wheeler and I have always loved the sound of the turbo on diesels, I'll alway roll my passenger window down alit bit and fuel on the engine and listen to the turbo spin up, I never get enough lol, these are sweet sounding to the soul.
With you on that one! As much as I love music, I’d rather hear the sound of a good running diesel or gasoline engine over a cd or radio. Think that’s odd? The great Edward Van Halen was asked what he listened to when driving his Ferrari and his response was; the sound of that glorious hand built engine and the symphony it produces(paraphrased)!
Without diesel lorries, trains, and ships, the entire planet will stop. Only very primative tribes will continue to exist. Those that live in a fantasy world believe solar, wind, and batteries can replace diesel. But reality will show them a very undeniable truth should the diesel engines of the world stop running. If diesel lorries, alone, stop running, it would cripple the planet's populations severely. Diesel is the life's blood of the modern world. Thank you for being a part of what keeps the planet modern and functioning.
I've driven across the US a lot and I drive really fast. But the last 10 years or so, I've noticed now that an occasional big rig will pass me, which 20 years ago never happened. But boy do I love the sound of a diesel truck with the turbos going at probably full PSI as it passes me, doing probably anywhere from 85 - 95 MPH with what must be full RPMs also. If I'm in the middle of the country, slowest I'm driving is 75 MPH, but probably doing 80 MPH. If you can pass me in a big rig, that's one impressive engine you got.
I also drove a turbocharged big-rig back in the day. Love that sound! My current hotrod is an '87 Buick GN with a big turbo that puts out 25 lbs of boost. Turbo is louder than the 231 cube V6! Glorious sound! Ever heard a fully-intact P-47 Thunderbolt go by @ ~550 MPH, running full war-emergency power with that dinner-table-sized turbo spooled-up to 70 pounds of boost, hot-side exiting directly out the back, just in front of the tailwheel, with zero exhaust system to restrict it? The massively loud turbo whine (nearly as loud as an F-16's engine) follows the plane by a few hundred feet! Gives ya chills!
about 20+ yrs ago I had the good fortune to take a trip on a converted Admirals Barge of the U.S.S. Midway. She was powered by two detroit diesels but had been converted to a cabin cruiser configuration for southern California 'sea scouts'. We left Dana Point harbor and headed north to Newport Beach. Hearing the diesels rumbling away, it was remarked by a few on board that that was the sound of dependability..awesome experience.
Wow, that mus be pretty intimidating, when you are just sailing along and that comes in your direction. More engine room vid please. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for showing the Historical Patrol boats. Growing up I use to Love watching the 72 Foot Torpedo Retrievers on Hood Canal WA. They would be Engines Off during a Test of a New Torpedo, then fire up there big Detroit Diesel's. Just get out and move across bay to Retrieve the Test shots. Or the fun thing to watch, when a Boater would go into Range. They would give chase, with a Flashing RED beacon and a coaster SIREN blasting. Those where fun summers watching the Navy on underseas Warfare Range.
I served on two US Coast Guard Island class patrol boats, both of them were powered by Paxman Valenta engines that sounded very aggressive. I wanna say they made 2800hp apiece, but had been dialed down from 4000hp in order to preserve the hull. They also smoked in cold water lol.....like a lot! My two were Sanibel and Wrangell, the 'Bel was an A class, Wrangell was a B class, and even though Wiki page says they top out at 29kts I can vouch for faster - Wrangell was getting a plant overhaul once a year while in the Northern Arabian gulf and we made 34kts with extra ammo and personnel aboard, she was a VERY fast ship, all six of the Island class patrol boats overseas were. Those engines we called them the Ferrari's of diesel engines, and I miss the sound, like a muscle car on steroids!!!
Used in trains as well as ships in the UK too, they were really aggressive sounding in those ( although all you could really hear was the turbocharger ). Paxman made some good engines, not always the most reliable though...
My Dad purchased a fiberglass salmon fishing vessel from " Don Pusga " of Haney , B.C. Canada in '78 . Pusga bought the mold from the U.S. The mold was a " PT " boat that the US had used in the veitnam war .. " How cool is this ?" 😊
I served on MTB 44 and the engines where not diesel, they where equipped with 3 X Isotta Frachini Polar and ran on aviation gasoline, 110 octane , amazing sound , from far away they sound like a ww2 bomber aircraft
AMERICAN PT BOATS HAD 3 12 CYLINDER PACKARD ENGINES WHICH USE HIGH OCTANE AVIATION FUEL. THE BOATS WERE BUILT OUT OF 2 LAYERS OF MAHOGANY PLANKING WHICH GAVE THEM THEIR STRENGTH.
IF YOU READ MY POST, I SAID ELCO AND, HIGGINS ESPECIALLY HAD 3 12 CYLINDER PACKARD ENGINES WHICH RAN ON AVIATION FUEL AND , THE BOATS WERE NOT BUILT OUT OF PLYWOOD. THEY WERE BUILT WITH 2 LAYERS OF MAHOGANY PLANKING.
@@earlfisherjr.65 THATS GREAT BUT ... have you heard about that caps-lock invention that stops you from typing in all uppercase because that seriously makes it look like you're screaming at the top of your lungs.
THAT’S BECAUSE HE IS STILL YELLING OVER NOISE OF THE BOILER ENGINES, STEAMING THE MAHOGANY, THAT HE USED TO BUILD THSES BOATS WITH.! You may never know?
Aside such wonderful speed boats i do have to comment on the experience of the "helmsmen" capable keeping in formation all the time even going so near! I'm impressed 👏 😎 👌
I have a doubt when I see the superstructure... Is this an Italian boat design ? I have seen the same on plans of the Reggia Marina as an example MAS501... In Italy they were built Baglietto..

After WW2 my dad bought a surplus harbour defence launch in Darwin Australia that had triple Packard 12 cylinder aircraft engines converted for marine use, he removed the 2 outboard engines and just ran on the centre engine he said it went like a bat out of hell.
That turbo sound gave me goosebumps!
actually gear driven compressors. i have seen those eniges being rebuilt
Drodo Leafwind Ohhh... thanks for telling me! Interesting and I'm learning every day!
Ty Cetto original it was compressors. what you hear is turbos. you hear it right 😊
Teawby OK, but why the change then from compressors to turbos?
Any which way, those diesel engines are sounding so darn awesome!

Plywood boats with huge turbocharged diesels shooting torpedoes. What guy wouldn’t love that!

Reason enough to get back into one

Just in case you wander, this for the T26:
Class: Patrol/Torpedo Boat

Commissioned: 1943
Decommissioned: 1957

Thats amazingly fast thats nearly 60mph ... what a beautiful boat .... my mate has a fairmile but these boats are just ... WOW ....
Would love to have. It would be awesome
That was magnificent, three boats side by side flat out, goosebumps
WOW .... what a beautiful sight .... that sound .. that bring tears to this old sea dogs eyes ... salute from NZ .. amazing ...., 👍👍👍 ....

The tiger shark?
@lammruss actually I recall it was called Hornet. John Walker was the skipper.
Woooow! Listen to the turbos whistle! Some serious power
Those Diesels and Turbos make a Pleasant Growling sound that says This is my Turf!!!
Isn't a diesel engine, that runs on high octane gasoline. That gasoline for airplane, about 110 octane
Wow, that mus be pretty intimidating, when you are just sailing along and that comes in your direction. More engine room vid please. Thanks for sharing.
I promise to make it happen!
Agreed.

The turbos sound sweet. Nice sounding boats to.
To what?
Nice close formation station keeping, particularly with that many people on board
That's badass wrapped in awesome and deep fried in stunning sweetness!!!
Just unbelievable BAD ASSERY!.....Wild ride, would be awesome to own one of those!!!

The USCG used Valentas? They were used a lot by the Royal Navy, but that was a pretty good export achievement
@Robert Mantell Thank you for your service.
Used in trains as well as ships in the UK too, they were really aggressive sounding in those ( although all you could really hear was the turbocharger ). Paxman made some good engines, not always the most reliable though...
They sound good, but they look so awesome at speed planing across the water. Awesome job gentlemen !!!!
My old man served on PT boats during the Korean war. He was a machinists mate.
I think there is still one fully functioning PT boat. Thank your dad for serving.
This makes me Remember our PT 109 🇺🇸 , Great video ....👍👍👍👍👍
These things sound amazing.
really cool stuff here.... super sounding boats as they cruise along.... love it
Total excitement. Thanks for the video.
These would be great boats for water-skiing 😎
Absolutely brilliant.... What a great sound with that whizz of turbo... ✌️💪👍

You're welcome:) glad you enjoyed it!
I got a trip with T56 for my 50 years birthday. Very nice at about 40 it’s in Stockholm’s archipelago
I would love a trip out on one of them
Wow! Stable boat when chopped that back boat waves...
Awesome boats

This is one of the great chacteristics of the Swedish built Navy combat vessels they are destine to be everlast. ♥️♥️😍😍👍👍
love the t26, what a beautyful boat!
Fantastic sound from these old torpedo boats, the ultimate big boys toy (if you have the money)! :-)
Class: Patrol/Torpedo Boat
Launched At: Kockums Shipyard, Sweden
Commissioned: 1957
Decommissioned: 1973
That sure looks like fun. Sounds awesome
stunning turbo sound!
Once in a life time ride !
I wish I was aboard, purely even though audio rugged .the note of the engines!!!!!!!
Diesel-Power Pur Bravo , wäre gern dabei gewesen
what a great experience , valdigt speciel !
What a beautiful sight!
Gotta get to Sweden for the boat races.
Now that reconfigure that boat and you would have a magnificent Yacht
Lovely - and impressive, exchange the torpedoes for Harpoon or some other anti-ship missile and they could be used again today!
There great got to ride on one in the 50. S
TurboDieselPower!!!
You can tell those boats want to hustle.
THE ENGINES SPOOLING UP AT THE START, SOUND LIKE ALCO 539
LOCOMOTIVE ENGINES!
That was exactly what I was thinking as well. I was wondering if there was a train starting on shore that was not on the video.
Indrid Cold thats t26 you hear. Isotta fraschini petrol engines. Straight pipes.
Heavily overstated. Turbos spooling? Didn't get that at any part. Impressed with the prop-wash tho''.
From 01:33 to 3:12 all you hear is turbo whistle...
Sounds Great once warmed up to operating temp.
+Kitty Cat a whole lot of metal and oil to heat up for sure
I was on these boats during 1970 to 1975. It was great but sometimes also scary. Then the fuel was gasoline not diesel.
T26 boat is too similar to Italian Navy torpedo boats (MAS) used last WW2 and engines are Isotta Fraschini
Very cool 👍👍👍
Thought I saw McHale on the first one out, nice video.
Man that is awesome!!!

gorgeous !!
WAUW!! Fantastic!!
"Now we are sucking diesel!!" 😁
go baby go !!!! 😂

Haha, im sure he had great fun though:)
Beasts! With the turbo noise♥️
How cool is that. That is all.
meget flotte båter :) nostalgi!
Kongratulation
Herr Diesel die Beste Maschine
Best part was 3:40 to 3:50 pure throaty rumble, non of that turbo shriek.
That was just the wind
thanks for sharing, wow :)
Wow ! The rooster tail at 4:0 ...... 😲
I want to see a drag race between the T26 and T56. I want to see the acceleration power of the T56.
Anyone remember McHales Navy? lmao awesome movie
that's what I was thinking of.
so cool!!!
What about the PT73?
Those tubes look like they are long enough to carry Mk45 ASTOR torps.
That might cause more than a few antennas to twitch tho...
frunkin Nice!!!
I wonder what the GPH is. 👀
I like this boats

We need this for our Philippine Navy💪😁🇵🇭
instead of taking the little blue pill, i'm gonna replay this tonight before i go to bed.
the misses won't know what got hold of her.
poor thing.
Fantastic! What a thrill 🙂 Can somebody give me the specifications of the engines? I can see they are V12 diesel and that's about it!
W18 diesels 57litre.
Magnificent !
Wow.., I wish I can have one
Were those IF diesels 2-strokes?
damn... i need that ship...
