PhD programs are indeed focused on the creation of new knowledge, primarily through original research that contributes to theoretical frameworks within a field. The emphasis on theoretical over applied knowledge is a hallmark of many PhD programs. These programs typically require a dissertation, which is expected to make a substantial contribution to academic research, often exploring uncharted territories in a specific discipline.
However, it's important to note that the distinction between "theoretical" and "applied" knowledge is not always clear-cut across all doctoral programs. There are various doctoral programs (such as professional doctorates like the EdD (Doctor of Education), DBA (Doctor of Business Administration), DEng (Doctor of Engineering), and others) that also emphasize the creation of new knowledge but with a stronger focus on applying this knowledge to solve real-world problems. These programs also often require a dissertation or equivalent substantial project, which, while grounded in rigorous research, aims to apply research findings to practical settings.
The notion that PhDs primarily produce theoretical knowledge while other doctoral degrees focus on applied knowledge reflects a general trend but does not encompass all doctoral studies. The specific requirements, including the nature of the dissertation or capstone project, vary widely among disciplines and institutions.

Thank you very much sir. Although I am not in the medical field this information was very helpful. I'm writing science fiction that involves characters with various degrees on Mastery of knowledge in futuristic technology. I'm glad that I learned the difference between doctor and ph.d. today so that I can apply the proper titles to my characters and thus make the story more believable

Hey I've a question, If someone do PHD in any course , like PHD in microbiology or botany then, Will He/She get "Dr" tag before his name???

@@nonamenoname21 They all get the "Dr." title, but as Dr. Rajeev explained, it's how you apply it. You'd put a PhD after your name depending on the doctoral student (scholar/scientist) program you are in. I've seen people who work in biomedical sciences with Ph.D. at the end of their name versus medical doctors having the title "Dr." before their first name. Example: First Name, Last Name, Ph.D. OR you can put Dr. First Name Last Name. It depends on how you want to portray yourself. If people see "Dr." they usually assume a doctor, like in a hospital or clinic, since they do not associate the "Dr." as a doctor of philosophy/education, etc. I hope it makes sense,. I know it's confusing but that's how I was best explained it when I was asking an advisor about it.

Who are called Dr.? Phd holders or Doctorate holder?

  • @vijay_voice

Theoretically your answer is ok but how the MBBS, MS, BDS, MDS degree is consider as a Doctor degree sir?
These all are UG and PG only right?, if they done MD means no issues I accept they are doctorate. But before of that they are practitioner only as per Indian medical board council also referring that only. If you are not agreed with this one means why you are calling physiotherapist?, D.Pharm is also a doctor degree but they are in medical only why others not accepting that peoples as a doctor in society?…
