    Thank you for this video, Dr. Jasper. I am currently in a Doctor of Education program in Interprofessional Leadership at Kent State University. I am forty-four years old, and the first college graduate in my family. In addition, I am a single father; my beautiful daughter, Livia, is seven years old and I have full custody. I just started the Ed.D. Program June 2022. Initially, I felt overwhelmed. However, I am feeling more comfortable with it. I earned my G.E.D. in 2009, at the age of thirty one years old. With my doctorate, I aspire to become a professor, and create a literacy and communication center in marginalized communities. Thank you for this informative video.

      Sounds like a remarkable journey so far. Your will and determination to accomplish what you have already is a testament to your willingness to succeed. There will be days that you will feel overwhelmed, but never forget the bigger picture. Your ambition is what will drive you and the gratification of your students addressing you as professor one day will be well worth it. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching.

      Dr. Jasper, I have finished the Ed.D program at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. I defended my dissertation on January 22, 2024, and my degree was conferred on June 1, 2024.

    Dr Jasper, excellent review!! You hit on all the important points (and the hard work on the EdD degree). With a little luck and few more sleepless nights I'll be successfully defending my EdD dissertation next month. It is a huge amount of work, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. For those considering I too highly recommend it. I dropped out of high school at 17 yr as a pregnant teen and fought hard not to be statistic, 40 years later I can say its been a rough and bumpy road but its been so worth it!!

    Thank you so much for this video. My whole life I was told that I wasn't smart enough or college material by people in the education field because of the fact that I've battled with a learning disability but so far, I have completed an associates, bachelors, graduate certificate, and am currently in a masters program in counseling. My ultimate goal is to counsel students at a college/university level and getting a doctorate degree would be my ultimate "suck it" moment for all of those that told me "I wasn't college material" or to "forget school and get life skills."

    Interestingly enough, in the UK and most Commonwealth countries, the academic tradition is not to preface your name with "Dr" but just to add "Phd" at the end of your name, if academically required. Only medical doctors are allowed the privilege of prefacing their names with "Dr". However, I'm not too sure if that academic tradition continues.

    I earned a B.A. in English from Florida Atlantic University. I also taught in the public K-12 system for about three years. After this, I went back to school for my M.Ed. After about 7 years working in higher education, I am considering whether to earn an Ed.D., a Ph.D. in Ed. Leadership, or going back to school for a B.S. in Accounting.
    While in my M.Ed. program, many of our courses mirrored Ed.D. courses. Also, one of my friends from undergrad (also an English major) agreed with me that our English degree (and it’s required readings and essays) was MUCH more difficult than our M.Ed. program.
    This post is to say, if you made it through undergrad, unless you earned a General Studies degree, you should have absolutely no problem knocking out a graduate degree.

    I compliment the speaker in this video because if there is an opportunity to advance yourself through education, then do it.
    I earned my master's in 2020 in Higher Education Administration and a certificate in Communication and Leadership in 2023. I did it to honor my father, who passed away in 2018. I do not have plans to pursue a doctorate; instead, I am interested in going to bible college to work in ministry.
    I still encourage everyone who wants to pursue a higher degree to do it because the experience can significantly impact and improve your life from a professional, educational, and personal perspective.

      @KathleenJasperEdD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind words! Congratulations on earning your master's and certificate - it's a commendable achievement. It's touching to hear that you pursued this in honor of your father. Thank you, Dr. Jasper. My career transitioned from managing pension plans for a small consulting firm as a Team Leader in the Actuarial Science field to becoming a Certified Math Teacher. My career in Corporate America lasted for about ten years before deciding to become an educator. While in Corporate America as a Team Leader, I managed a few analysts and always heard that I was a very effective instructor who could break down specific terminology into plain English that young analysts could understand. At one point, the Actuary I was reporting to said" "You could be a great teacher" or "You are a warrior because no matter what you touch, it always shines". After ten years in Corporate America, I decided to leave the Pension Consulting business and started my career in Adult Education as an hourly teacher to get my feet wet. In the process, I went back to school to do my Master of Arts in Education and successfully passed the Praxis Exams and student teaching, which allowed me to work at another district as a full-time math teacher. I taught middle school 7-grade to learn classroom management ("baptism under fire") before I taught 9-12 for a couple of years in a regular high school setting. During these years as a High School Math teacher, I had a great mentor who helped me become an effective math educator by sharing his years of experience in making math connections making my teaching experience memorable. However, I could not stop thinking about Adult Education because in this setting students who do not fit into the school system, from age 17 and over have an opportunity to earn their GED or High School Diploma. These groups of students face tremendous challenges economically, socially, and academically. I felt all of my knowledge was better off serving this group of students as long as there was a full-time position, which once it became available I applied for it and I have been here ever since. In the process of working as a full-time teacher in Adult Education, I earned my Professional Certification as a math teacher, I was selected by the Society of Hispanics of Professional Engineers (SHPE) Educator of the Year 2022-2023, and just recently I was nominated by my math colleagues at one of the Community Colleges in CT to be listed in the Board of Regents for Adjunct Faculty for the 2023-2024 school year. I know for a fact that I am not interested in pursuing a 092 Administrator Certification to work as an assistant principal or principal because I just do not see myself meeting the demands of these two job descriptions, however, to open my horizons away from mathematics, I am thinking about the Ed.D program. Your input will be greatly appreciated because the real motive is for my own satisfaction to know how else I could help our student population or newcomers in the teaching field perform to have all of the tools to become effective educators.

Since that time, I've been a dedicated high school teacher at an international program in China. I'm now seriously considering doing an online Doctor of Education program, as I've never felt right with abandoning my goal of reaching the highest level of academia, and it would seem to actually carry practical weight going forward as a teacher (whether at home or abroad).

      It sounds like you've achieved a lot already with two master's degrees! Pursuing an EDD would undoubtedly be another significant accomplishment, especially with the added benefit of discounts through your workplace. While it may not directly impact your current role, if it's a personal goal that excites you, it could be worth considering. Just remember to weigh the workload and time commitment against your current priorities and overall well-being.

    This was very encouraging to me. I've been doing general research on how to get my BA and then MA faster so i can move along right into PhD studies as soon as possible to keep the ball rolling while i'm used to all the school flow of things. I plan to get my BA in elementary education, then MA in secondary English, since these are what WGU offers. I was sharing to ask; do you think that these would suffice if i then went to a graduate program for a PhD in Philosophy (i also want to minor in Classics/Classical studies)? This is all just what i've realized i'm passionate about in evaluating what fuels me and keeps my passion and joy for life going. My sparkle to everyday, my magical moments during my initial self-studying for Google IT support was the time i allowed to listen to and or read about Philosophy, and or Lit/gen. Classical education. Again, this was for fun, in my own free time. I mean, it would get me emotional to learn about these things and then contemplate and later engage in conversations with friends and family. I would explain things to them since they were interested but didn't have the time to learn about it all. Anyyyyways, got excited there, sorry, so...would that be alright do you think? I read somewhere in some PhD program in my research that you'd be better off having a BA and or MA in anything at all, even something not in the field focus you're going for. I took that as my okay to move forward with just getting what degrees i have available to me to ready me best i can for the lifestyle change. Though, as of right now, i do already live a pretty hermit scholar life due to also being a writer working on my books in my free time. Sorry for ranting again, seems like you went a similar route of getting Bachelors, Master then going for the Doctorate, and they seemed to be a bit separate in areas but still were fine. I want this really bad but i also don't want to waste time and money, please lmk as soon as you can since it's hard to find answers to this sort of thing for some reason.

      Your plan to pursue a BA in elementary education and an MA in secondary English before applying to a PhD program in philosophy seems solid. While some suggest degrees in related fields, your passion and dedication matter most. Your background could offer valuable perspectives, and your self-directed learning shows your commitment. Reach out to programs you're interested in for specific guidance, but keep nurturing your curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

    Thank you for responding to me. I wanted to work as a professor, as a part-time (side) job in the summer while teaching full-time as a teacher. However, you mentioned that professors must continue researching, writing and publishing articles. Honestly, I do not want to continue research after completing the program and dissertation. Can I apply the Ed.D degree differently while still being a full-time public school teacher?
    And if I do end up working at the university level, what is the workload for research and writing articles? How long? How many pages to write?
    I have not yet reached the stage of a concept paper and dissertation, but I do not know what I want to focus on regarding curriculum and instruction. Any tips or advice?? Any books?
    Just having mixed feelings and curious about all of this.
    thank you

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's entirely possible to apply an EdD degree differently, focusing on teaching and curriculum development without extensive research. Workloads for research at universities can vary, so it's essential to discuss expectations with potential employers.
      The best path for you will depend on your personal and professional goals. Remember that there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and there are various ways to make the most of your EdD degree while maintaining your full-time teaching position. In your opinion, from an academia perspective, does it look better for the President of an Institution of Higher Education to have a Ph.d or an Ed.d to his/her name? I am curious about this because while such a position is within academia, thus pointing to a Ph.d, the Ed.d better prepares, in my opinion, the administrative side of any job, just like you have discussed. • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Deciding whether to pursue a second Master's in educational leadership or opt for a quick certification and then pursue a doctorate can be a significant decision. Here are some points to consider:
      Career Goals: Reflect on your career goals and where you see yourself in the future. Do you want to move into educational leadership roles, such as administration or school leadership? If so, a Master's in educational leadership would be more directly relevant.
      Doctoral Studies: Think about what field you might want to pursue for your doctorate. While it's not necessary to have a doctorate right away, having an idea of the field can help you decide whether to pursue a second Master's or a certification first.
      Time and Commitment: Consider the time and commitment required for each option. A second Master's will typically take longer than a quick certification. Doctoral programs also require a significant time commitment, so it's important to balance your current workload and personal life.
      Educational Pathway: Check with potential doctoral programs you're interested in to see if they have specific requirements regarding prior degrees. Some programs may prefer candidates with a Master's in a related field, such as educational leadership.
      Consultation: Speak with advisors, mentors, and professionals in your field to get their perspectives. They can provide insights based on your specific circumstances and aspirations.
      Financial Considerations: Factor in the cost of each option and whether your current program can be applied towards further studies.
      Ultimately, the decision should align with your career goals, interests, and personal circumstances. If you're unsure about what to pursue for your doctorate, taking some time to explore different options and gain some practical experience in the field might help clarify your path.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That all depends. If you're looking for the best ROI, I would say get your master's in a program that will earn you more money. For example, if you become an assistant principal, you'll most likely need a master's in ED Leadership. Be sure to check with your state. Then you can get a job that pays significantly more. But if you're looking to get a master's degree in something you love, you may want to go with an area like reading or special education. Those do not usually set you up for more money, but they may land you a job you love. Before you choose, be sure to evaluate what you really want and what it will cost. That is very important. I will do more videos on this topic; it seems to be a subject many have questions about. Thanks for watching.

      I disagree with the video and the popular sentiment. If we are being honest, there are differences of quality and rigor. In recent years, in general, the rigor involving all college and graduate degrees has dropped, depending on which college you attend. This even includes the PhD. But no one I know who has received their EdD did a dissertation. I'm sure exceptions are out there, but everyone I know, including myself, who has received their PhD has written a dissertation, not a "capstone project." I know people who choose the EdD because the PhD's emphasis on research and writing is too overwhelming. All leaders in education (especially in colleges and universities, even small community colleges) should be able to write and research, even if they don't play the publication race. A JD degree is one of the oldest and respectable practical doctorate, but we also see others in healthcare; I understand these kinds because their fields' practice isn't as intertwined with philosophy and theory, but we have a much more difficult time separating theory and praxis in the study and practice of education.
      Right now, I am seeing a lot of issues in colleges, especially in community colleges, where administrators with EdDs are taking over, and it is causing issues because of their lack of research skills and theoretical knowledge and thinking. Many of these admin came up from high schools, and they are just applying high school ways of doing things to the collegiate level. I don't know if you know anything about HS rankings globally and where the US stands, but colleges should not follow HSs. The TH-camr can disagree and provide her opinion, but for her to say people don't know what they're talking about is absurd.
      The following is something I have not researched, but I believe a lot of schools that may not have the ability (faculty, resources, meet accreditation standards, etc.) to have a PhD program have an EdD program, so this should tell you something, too. You can receive a lot of practical doctorates from schools that have no other graduate degrees or terminal degrees.

      @@GoldenMean743 I have an Ed.D. and completed a dissertation: THE EFFECTS OF MANDATED THIRD GRADE RETENTION ON STANDARD DIPLOMA
      ACQUISITION AND STUDENT OUTCOMES: A POLICY ANALYSIS OF FLORIDA'S A+ PLAN. It's a quantitative longitudinal study on the effects of thrid grade retentions over ten years, including economic consequences. If you need help falling asleep tonight, you can read it here: drive.google.com/file/d/1JU1jDpVpqvMARx1-36sCYvaMRy0wHqX6/view?usp=sharing
      All my colleagues in educational leadership (Ed.D) were required to write dissertations. Also, many of our professors were R-1 university professors who required complicated research methods and models. In fact, my dissertation committee had 2 R-1 professors on it. We also had to defend our dissertation in front of a pannel of professors many of whom were R-1, and they did not let us off the hook.
      What research are you currently working on? Feel free to share. Thanks for watching 😊

      @@KathleenJasperEdD I'm a private person when it comes to social media (the clue is the Aristotelian username), but I'm an English professor with publications in literary history, modernism, and the Harlem Renaissance. I've been a professor for over 30 years, and I am not all that proud of my dissertation anymore.
      But my credentials or yours is not relevant to my post. I saw your video, and I noted, there are exceptions, but if you teach in college and are aware of the state of collegiate education, then you know that much of what I stated has merit. Paglia and others speak of the "administrative masterclass," and many are coming out of thee EdD programs. Your flexing does little to dent my arguments. To state that there is none or that people who criticize the EdD don't know what they are talking about is certainly extreme and overlooks that intelligent people make valid points otherwise. I would and anyone reading this thread would be better off if you responded to the points I made.

    Hello ma'am, thank you so much as your video came in absolutely timely.
    For me, my goal is to become a Dr. in the field of education, stay in the academia, eventually, drive positive change and impact, specifically in the field of education. But I didn't understand the meaning of Ed.d nor what it entailed, but i submitted my application for it about some 48 hours ago.
    Now, I feel worried because I am not sure I applied for the right thing. I saw my specific field of interest, but what difference does it really make? Would i still be addressed as Dr., at the end of my Ed.d, which i applied for? Does Ed.d create opportunities for me inside the academia as long as i want?
    Thank you for the feedback.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD

      Hello! We're glad the video was timely for you. The Ed.D., or Doctor of Education, is indeed a doctoral degree that focuses on practical applications of research in the field of education. While the specific requirements and outcomes can vary by institution, completing an Ed.D. should still earn you the title of "Dr." upon graduation.
      The key is to ensure that your specific field of interest aligns with the program you applied for. Typically, an Ed.D. does open doors within academia, allowing you to contribute to positive change and impact in the education sector. It's a respected credential that can lead to various opportunities in research, administration and teaching.
      If you're uncertain about your application, it might be helpful to reach out to the admissions office or program coordinator for clarification. They can provide insights into the program's focus and how well it aligns with your goals. Best of luck on your journey to becoming a Dr. in the field of education.

    At my university there is a bias against Ed.D’s . My current boss has a PhD and the search committee for her position refused to interview anyone without a PhD. In that search there were a few EdDs with stellar resumes that weren’t given an interview. I am an international education professional and find myself in a tough spot. I feel like EdDs align much more with my interests and career path because I want to solve problems and be a practitioner which would mean at my university working in administration not as a faculty member. But if I want to grow at my university I would need a PhD since it’s an unwritten rule there that you need one. What do you recommend?

Do what makes you happy, and forget about everyone else. It is your students whom you should be worried about. They are the most important people in your profession.

    Does the Ed.D. have a higher ROI than the Ph.D., monetary wise?

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Comparing the ROI of an Ed.D. versus a Ph.D. in monetary terms can be complex. Factors like field, career goals, and job market demand play pivotal roles. Generally, Ph.D. holders may earn higher salaries due to research-focused roles, while Ed.D. holders often pursue leadership positions in education, which may offer competitive compensation. Ultimately, ROI depends on individual circumstances and professional aspirations.

    Does Ed.D require local residency? I am from China.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there. The Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) programs in the U.S. vary in their residency requirements. Some programs, especially those designed for international students or working professionals, offer fully online or hybrid formats, which may not require any local residency. However, certain Ed.D. programs may require short residencies or on-campus sessions periodically. It’s best to check with specific universities to understand their residency policies, as they may have flexible options tailored for international students.

    More often than not, EdD’s tend to be overwhelmingly on the defensive! Something you don’t hear from Ph.D’s. Why???

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The perceived defensiveness among EdD holders compared to PhDs might stem from the differing emphases of their programs. EdD programs often prioritize practical applications and leadership, which can lead to a stronger attachment to their work. PhD programs, on the other hand, typically emphasize critical thinking and engagement with diverse viewpoints.
