    Very good way to show us how to. A trck for the users: I had a Rekluse on my wr450f and you can engage engine breaking if you give a little gas to reach the required rpm and then let it rev down the hill.

    Hey John! You put that wider internal friction disc back wrong after you took the pressure plate off to adjust. 27:25. The teeth of the disc didn’t go into the basket sleeves.

    The engineering of these things is pretty impressive. I'm amazed specifically by the adjustment methods they've come up with for each style of clutch you find on different bikes.

    Hi John - great video and very helpful for a non-mechanic like me to see that it's easier than the manual leads on. One thing of note: I believe the center clutch nut is 27mm - not 28mm as you mentioned in the video. I tried a 28mm and started to strip the nut so I went back to the HW store to grab a 27mm (after measuring it to make sure) and that was the right fit. I have the 2020 450L...
    Also - I used an impact wrench as my wrenching with a breaker bar wasn't getting it!

    I did this a while back on mine and became lazy on the clutch in technical stuff. That led to a couple of whiskey throttle episodes.
    I still have very good engine braking. In real sketchy tech stuff, I’ll use second gear to help with the on off throttle issue.
    You have done a lot to your bike. Thanks for all the videos.

    I ordered this for a 19 crf450l, the gap between 2nd and 3rd is too big for single track riding.....I am revving 2nd to no end or putting\stalling in 3rd. I am told this will do wonders for m bike. I know the rekluse exp pro that I put in the hyrbrid trx250r/crf450r quad did wonders and make the quad much easier to ride on mx tracks, almost eliminated stalls and made it so I can go into a turn on 3rd......power out and shift to 4th. Before I would have to go to 2nd, shift to 3rd, then to 4th to not stall out.

    Is the clutch cover bigger than the OEM one? Do you or can you add more oil with the Rekluse cover ?

    In regard to one of the negatives mentioned for the Rekluse: bump starting. Bump starting a bike should be a rarity and often the need to bump start it has been caused by stalling the bike too many times in difficult terrain. With the Rekluse stalling is greatly reduced thus reducing the chances of flattening a battery anyway.

    I'll tell you what John, my starter on my 450L failed.
    I had to have a bring in a Honda tech from out of town to come and trouble shoot the problem, as my local honda dealer couldnt figure it out.
    It was a C clip on the starter that had fallen off internally.
    Honda tech nailed the problem with in ten minutes, he figured it was not installed properly at the factory.
    Another thing, the 450L was hard to jump start. took me numerous attempts.
    If your stuck some where with no decent to help assist in the rolling jump, good luck is all I can say.
    Though now I have the ECU and full exhaust, so maybe that will help it fire easier if this ever happened again.

      @@JohnTYoung LoL, I'm sure your fine. I had around 1200KM on when I had an issue, blew out a fork seal as well. Was all covered under warranty.
      Where did you get those air release plugs for your front forks John? they look a lot easier to remove than the stock ones.

      John: I have a 450L with similar mods to yours: I put on a 1.85"x21 front rim in place of the 1.6". this allows me to run a wide assortment of 90/90/21 tires.

    Thank you for the video ... can I ask what spring you've used in the EXP plate (according to the manual, the default is 6x BLUE springs for a 'medium' setting; for a LOW engagement the suggestion is 3x RED + 3x BLUE) and wondered what you found works for you? How many miles have you done with the original Rekluse?

    27:33 that friction plate that came out with the pressure plate went back in the wrong slot without steel guides.

    I've heard mixed reviews on the Stegpegz. I haven't seen you review them yet but how do you like them so far?

      I know I commented on them somewhere, but just for you... I sort of sometimes like them. Standing up going uphill leaning forward on them they are alright. Downhill not so much. They take a good bit of getting used to and you HAVE to ride on the balls of your feet, not the center, or you feel off balance. On your toes it works really well.

    I'm 53, and I road a little as a child. I caught the bug hard in 2022. I ride 4/5 times a week and have progressed pretty fast, but with that being said, I still make a lot of mistakes and have a lot of hard offs. Especially on steep terrain. I have arthritis really bad, and I have to put in a Rekluse. After watching a bunch of videos, I have a few concerns. My biggest is throttle control and getting back on the bike on steep terrain. Is this something that I should worry about, or is it pretty easy to get a custom to?

      I got used to it tho it can be tricky. Once you develop a steady throttle hand life is easy with the Rekluse.

      So far I like it a lot. Just been doing some slow speed figure eights and whatnot in the back yard with it so far. As soon as the snow melts or the Rona goes away, whichever comes first, I'll get out on some trails and do a proper review.

      I want to put one on my 450rl but I’m hesitant on losing engine braking. I’ve heard that it still has engine braking but I see your comment saying it doesn’t so I’m not sure about it anymore.

      @@jdavishornet There is still engine breaking until low RPM when the clutch will start to slip again allowing freewheeling. The clutch engages/disengages at certain RPMs. There are different weight springs that you can install to set it where you would like .

    Internal vs External gap for Rekluse Radius CX. I am installing my new Rekluse Radius CX and am having a tough time choosing the internal vs External gap. I like having some free play at the clutch with using the internal gap, but do not like having to remove the clutch cover to adjust Free Play Gain. I have Rekluse on some other bikes and I seem to adjust every few tanks of fuel. The ease of adjusting at the clutch cable is a big plus, but do not know the clutch lever position when over riding.
    How often do you have to adjust the Free Play Gain?

      Hmmm. I've adjusted it twice in 10,000 miles. The last time because I had to pull the clutch lever part and re-install it.

    Dude! when that outside fiber disc stuck to the pressure plate you put it back in on the notches without the steel liner! Probably not a major issue but surprised nobody else caught that

      @@JohnTYoung Awesome! Im about to pull the trigger on a rekluse but unsure because of the loss of engine braking at low rpm but I can always just hit the high idle switch on steep descents . Arthritis makes long rides hell but Ive just been weighing out the pros an cons, lots of tight technical trails with hillclimbs/descents that can be over 600+ ft in elevation change.
      How have you liked yours in the last year of using it?

      So far I love it. No issues. For engine braking you’re just going to go a little faster and blip the throttle to re-engage the clutch. Easy Peasy.

    I installed one of these but now have massive slack in the clutch cable. Even after pulling it all the way in with both adjusters...any ideas? I basically can't engage the clutch lever at all

      Sounds like something internal is not set up right. Check in with Rekluse.

    So 2 Questions
    What is your opinion on the recluse clutch?After riding the BDR’s
    Looking to up grade my clutch
    Also a different (more current)video you tried a rear hand brake lever that didn’t look like it worked that great.
    Have you tried the Recluse brake lever that is hydraulic?

      I looked at their brake and I didn't like the way it integrated into the system. Having said that, if Rekluse wants to send me one to try out.....

    Another great video! I am curious if after installing the auto clutch if you changed your vortex settings? Mainly, the vortex trail map is smoother than the power map and wonder if the clutch influences what your preferred setting is? Thanks.

      I've been using, and like, the torque / sand / traction map. I have the switch to swap between that and the power map #1, but always seem to be on the torque map.

    Hi John, this might have been mentioned already in other comments, but it appeared to me that your last friction got put into the wrong groove. This happened when you reinstalled the friction after it stuck to the pressure plate (post setup). I hope this helps you. Thanks for the video.

    Hi John, it looks like your bike responded nicely when you demonstrated takeoff and stopping. I’m just about to install a Radius X. I was wondering which springs and wedges you settled on.
    Also, did you ever find a LHRB set up you were happy with? My bike (Yamaha) also has a cable operated clutch as standard.

      I'm sorry, I don't remember the specifics of springs and weight, other than they were the ones Rekluse recommended. As for the brake, so far nada. There are more out there to try, but I haven't yet.

    Hey does your rekluse make some noise when it's cold? Like a little grinding? I picked up a used bike that had a dealer installed rekluse and had to adjust the clutch cable so it wouldn't pull forward. The free play gain is good. Once it's warmed up it's perfect so I'm not that worried about it. Just when it's cold it chatters and grinds a little.

      @@stefanhaffner3210 In theory it would. A little at least. Other factors are compression ratio, wear parts, clutch materials, etc.... Light aluminum engine parts wear faster and produce more gunk in the oil than steel ones.

    Is there any engine braking with the rekluse auto clutch? Cause that’s a big deal for me, I love the no stalling in complex terrain but if there is no engine braking... it’s probably not worth it to me?

      As long as your RPMs are high enough to engage the clutch, then yes, there is engine braking. If your RPMs fall below, say 2000 then it releases and no, there is none. It takes some getting used to.

      I fiddled for a few days when I first got it but haven't had to touch it since. Seems pretty bombproof considering what I am asking it to haul around.

    I've heard a bunch of mixed reviews on what oil to use after auto clutch install. I use ams oil dirt 10w-40 now but I'm going to be installing auto clutch should I keep the same oil.

    Excellent video, between this or updated V ecu / power comm. type accessory, which improves on/off power in 1st better? Or does neither. I'm used to it stock but soon as I jump on another bike for period of time its back to 450l training 101. Thanks.

      The Vortex ECU is by far the better upgrade because it fixes SOOOOOOO many things. In the mean time cover the clutch with a little pressure and the twitch gets better.

    Any regret on this clutch? I ride a smaller wr250r and I'm a pretty new & shorter rider. Have difficulty with things like pivot turns, wheelies, stuff like that. I assume the recluse would make a lot of this stuff easier but a number of riders say just work at using the standard clutch. Did you get this because the bike has quirks, you just wanted to ride and have fun w/o the endless hrs of work, injury that makes clutching difficult, something else??? Would you buy it again? Thanks.

      No regrets, just some learning curves. I got the clutch to make adv life easier. The CRF’s clutch is OK, but when the bike is loaded down it can be a hassle trying to keep from stalling. The Rekluse fixed that, for certain. If you’re a newer riding working on improving your skills, don’t get the auto clutch. If you just want to ride , it works well.

    Hey John! Love your videos! I was hoping you can give me some advice/help!? I have recently taken the plunge and bought a floor model 2020 450l after seeing how much fun you have had on yours! I live in Africa, which means that unfortunately, I get a EURO4 constrained version of the bike, which only chucks out 25hp :( I have been looking around and I know you have put in the vortex ECU and new pipe on your bike. I have a feeling part of the constraints process is that they restrict the air intake inlet on the bike. Does that mean I will have to somehow swap that out as well if I am going to try and uncork the bike? if I put in the vortex system and a new pipe will the restricted air intake mess with the mapping on the ECU? I have been trawling forums and have seen lots of people hint at the fact honda has uncorking kits available but so far haven't actually found anywhere you can get one :(

      Yes and yes. Lol. Short answer. You will need the American OEM rubber carb mount. Double check the part number on that. The EU one has only a 1 inch hole in it. 😬

    I don't see a comment about it, but did anyone else notice the last friction disc was reinstalled in the wrong notches? It's not where the steel guides are installed. When the pressure plate was removed and it brought the friction/steel with it, the friction was reinstalled 1 notch out.
    Kinda wonder how that is wearing, if it wasn't ever corrected

      @@JohnTYoung I just want to add: Love your content! I just picked up a CRF450L and your videos were a huge factor in my decision to go with this bike vs a KTM 500. I did Engineer Pass on my R1200GS Adventure last year and it was miserable, hard work. The ride from Austin to CO on the thing was amazing, but once I tried to do some off-road the weight killed the fun, though there is a sense of accomplishment taking such a large bike places it doesn't really belong.
      Looking forward to my next trip up there with the 450, but I think I'll truck it up to CO Spring to avoid the long highway slog in the pan handle of TX

    Hi John, thanks for another video! Is this rekluse install at all related to trying to address the gas-in-the-oil issue? I'd heard that stalling could lead to gas-in-the-oil, but not sure if that's at all true.

      This is directly related to stalling, yes, but not about the gas in the oil issue. Just me, stalling the bike in super steep or rocky areas.

      @@jose-tube No pressure there... For my next oil sample I'm going to do 600 miles worth of starts and stops but change the oil out at 400 or so miles. After all the research and comments I'm thinking this is just the way it is and we'll have to live with it by using quality oils and regular changes.

    John, I know it's been awhile since you installed it, but I'm curious if the taking the plastic case covers off made a noticeable difference in engine noise. I'm leaning toward the Radius X over the CX since the plastics don't fit on the CX lid. Less noise and $431 vs benefits from the CX core parts, adjustability. Any comment on choosing between the two?

      Yes. As long as the rpms are north of 2200 rpm the clutch is engaged like normal

      Yes. Me too. But I'm cheap. And as long as they are heavily coated in oil so they can absorb it everything ought to be fine. But mostly I was being cheap.

    what is the point of installing the recluse clutches?? I understand what it does and how it works but why are you installing this clutch? is it just the ease of riding? I don't think you do any tight single track. that's the only place I would see this useful. great video btw.

      Thanks. The places I get into the most trouble are rocky single track, which is most of the trails around me. Baby heads slow you down and the bowling balls take you out. I swear they see me coming and rub their little evil stone hands together.

    i'm an ex motocrosser/supercrosser and i'll tell you straight out, this bike is a detuned race bike with blinkers on. You could take the road legal shit off this bike and fit a set of dunlop knobblies and race this thing. It sucks as a "Duel sport". It is a detuned crf450r that you can ride on the road. Thank you to honda for giving us ex moto guys what we wanted... the trouble is, that when we got it, we realised we should have just taken our mx bikes to the track/trail and ridden a dr650 on the road...

      ngfarmer..........I don’t know where you’re from but I would have to disagree completely. I guess it depends on what you consider to be a dual sport bike or what degree of off road you riding you do. A DR 650 is a horrible dirt bike. Just because you can ride it on a dirt road does not make it dirt worthy. Dual sport in my opinion means street to trail not dirt road. Which is why the Crf450L is a good dual sport bike. Here in California where the liberal tree hugging socialist leaning fun Nazis have limited our access to ride you need the PLATE to go from one trail to the next or risk a fine for operating a non licensed vehicle on a forest road. Anyway happy Trails to you .

      @@MrBluesmeister yes, if that is the definition of duel sport - trail to trail, this bike rips! it is very good for that. I'm from NZ and we have a lot of gravel roads and fairly low quality pot hole ridden tarmac that leads to a lot of beaches etc. Down here thats whats considered duel sport, not so much pure off road with a plate! happy trails to you too
