      Dr. Gabor Mate is amazing, such insight of human nature. Spinoza a 17th century philosopher understood human nature in respect to the mind and his/her emotions. I have learned that pain and suffering is caused by confused thinking and the belief in freewill and free-choice is an illusion. As Dr. Mate explains that we are traumatized early, we carry this throughout our lives, where is the freewill in this? Strength is improving our understanding, knowing oneself. WayofSpinoza.com

    Thank you. 22 years as a college professor and I never worked with a "disturbed" or learning-challenged young person who didn't respond and make joyful progress immediately once they realized they had a friend who was really on their side. Am still in touch with most of them years later. It's only to say how right I think Dr. Mate is about these issues.

    • @nonelost1
      @nonelost1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      "...make joyful progress immediately once they realized they had a friend who was really on their side."
      What a breath of fresh air! Therefore, even if we do make progress, that is long and hard to come by (joyless aka "willpower"/"practice and perseverance"), than we ought realize that any "therapist" that we often pay a fortune, who insists that mental and emotional problems take years of sessions and discipline to treat, is no friend at all, but an enemy who really is against us.
      In 2012-13, I went to just such a "therapist". I wanted her to help me find a quick, easy, and guaranteed way to overcome mental/emotional problems, or at least the closest thing to it. Or at the very least, seriously DESIRE to help me find "immediate joyful progress" in overcoming mental/emotional problems. Or else, EMPATHICALLY show me that it would be a bad thing even if such did exist. But no, she sanctimoniously and close-mindedly INSISTED that no such thing exists! She clearly was NOT on my side! And I still have painful memories to this day, over five years after cessation of MALtreatment because of this fact!
      She did not charge me a fortune. I'll give her that. In fact, she often let my sessions run overtime without additional charge (she was a friend of my sister who usually attended my sessions). But even if she did not charge anything, my mental and emotional state has clearly experienced greater harm than good on account of her influence. I have not been to any counselor/therapist/shrink since, and doubt I ever will go to another one.
      BTW, don't brings friends or relatives to your shrink sessions with you, unless you are convinced that they are "on your side" on issues important to you. Otherwise, you will feel "ganged up against" if both the shrink and your accomplice disagree with you on any issue important to you. My sister's presence had been a blessing, until the very end, when both she and the shrink went against me re: quick, easy, and guaranteed, which made it a double whammy. Had my sister not been there, it would only have been half as bad.

      Dr. Bronfenbrenner has been doing studies and research on the importance of a warm, loving socio-environment of classrooms since the 1920s and 30s. He said it best with this quote...
      “In order to develop normally, a child requires progressively more complex joint activity with one or more adults who have an irrational emotional relationship with the child. Somebody's got to be crazy about that kid. That's number one. First, last and always.”
      People have no idea how powerful a mentor can be, who adores the kid. I had seen more progress from students with InD who feel loved by those around them than y institutions with he latest gadgets and technology. The power of the human touch, such as a daily hello in the form of a fist palm, high five, hugs does wonders to a person with severe disabilities. The sense of being value is very powerful, yet highly underestimated in the education system, especially the public school system. The way their faces lights up upon seeing someone who actually authentically cares and loves them is worth all of the gold in the world to them. Never underestimate what a hug can do to another person.

    Dr Gabor is 75. The world will lose a huge advocate and teacher when he is gone. What he is saying is extremely significant and sooooo detrimental to our society and our well being yet sadly it is still NOT incorporated in our health care system as it SHOULD be on EVERY level. Why? Because our health care system and more importantly our government is and will probably always be more invested in economics rather than the well being of their citizens.
    Here in Canada, I have seen and experienced this lack of appropriate care on every level. Once a person is deemed "unproductive", be it physically or mentally, they simply become a burden to our society and are treated as such. There's little (if any) interest in getting to the root of the problem and handling people with care and compassion. As Dr. Gabor says, there is a medication for everything!
    Unfortunately, Dr. Gabor is a RARE gem in his field and our world desperately needs more people like him!

    "What remains of democracy is largely the right to choose among commodities. Business leaders have long explained the need to impose on the population a ‘philosophy of futility’ and ‘lack of purpose in life’ to ‘concentrate human attention on the more superficial things that comprise much of fashionable consumption’. Deluged by such propaganda from infancy, people may then accept their meaningless and subordinate lives and forget ridiculous ideas about managing their own affairs. They abandon their fate to corporate managers and the PR industry, and, in the political realm, to the self described ‘intelligent minorities’ who administer power."
    Noam Chomsky

    • @jamesowen5702
      @jamesowen5702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's one of the problems with Chomsky, he describes the relationshp as between self-interest masters and infantalised consumers, which isn't really going to convince many people that it's the system which engenders that relationship that must change. He makes it very us against them, when it should be all people against the social phenomenon that put us here.
      To his credit Mate's description of the problem is much easier to digest, more empowering and more inspiring for it.

Your parents should be there to support and guide through the hard times. It's great to be able to overcome and raise above your hard childhood or difficult life without parents/family as a young person. But millions of peoples are struggling that way and at a certain level we would just be better off as a society with parents who can pass on good parenting/emotional/communication skills to their children. I highly recommend this man to those who don't have a clear understanding that Human Nature and Behavior are all upbringing and environmental experience, not Biological. Anyways thank you for uploading videos featuring this great man.
    Rats are even sympathetic towards other species. Their sense of bonding with someone outside of themselves is so strong, they will seek out companionship and express sympathy towards those outside of their own species. Rabbits are like this too, which is why rabbits breed so fast and in the many numbers. Rodents (the group Rats and Rabbits belong to) hate being alone. I personally knew a few rats and rabbits who love being petted and having that close connection with humans.
    As for gut feeling, I had so many cases to recall of responding to them, rather than ignoring them. This is especially true in my college years, in which I would find students with their head down within their arms while they were sitting in benches. I couldn't help, but to view that a stress gesture or gesture of depression, so I would approach them and simply asked if they were ok. Our society may tell us to ignore such gestures or cues, but I wasn't raised by society, I was raised by my parents, who taught me if I see something wrong to react to it, not to be a silent bystander.

      Juci Shockwave Once, while my husband was walking on a sidewalk, a vicious fight started amongst a few men where it was two against one, and the one person was getting hurt quite badly. My husband felt compelled to try and help the man who was outnumbered, and being beaten, and in the process of doing this, my husband was stabbed with a knife in his ribs, mid section toward his back. I honestly don’t know what ever happened with the men fighting, but my husband was rushed to a hospital, where they saved his life from his extensive knife wound. My husband has suffered from PTSD ever since, even though he has gone for counseling concerning this matter. I’ve never heard him say that he regrets his actions from that day, however I am sure that he has thought about how he might be doing these days if he had not jumped in on that fight. Aahh, life. 😊

    • @Shroomzee
      @Shroomzee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      "Human Nature and Behavior are all upbringing and environmental experience, not Biological." this is just a false statement. everything is a combination of both upbringing and genetics to one degree or another. To ignore the importance of either side, and claim that either side alone is everything, is a mistake. Dr Mate does the very good work bringing light to the importance of the "upbringing" side, and the interconnectedness of everything, which likes to be swept under the rug in modern day culture.
      Even this entire talk of his is about this "BIO-psycho-social" perspective. His reference to Buddhism around the 8:30 mark is NOT just pointing to the importance of recognizing the impact line of Environemnt > Mind > Body, but recognizing them as one in the same, and not treating them as distinctly separate entities in our Culture, as well as in medicine. To create a culture that denies the importance of genetics and other biological truths will just lead to other societal problems associated with... denying the importance of genetics and the physical part of the biological organism outside of the "psycho-social" part(which you are making paramount). That attitude is a mistake. imo ofc

      I'm pretty sure nobody will ignore biological needs, like need to eat, drink water, sleep, etc. Other than that, our well being, and especially mental well being is much more dependent on socio-economic factors. Not to mention we now may have our specifically physical needs met yet be more miserable than ever, and we are...
      As far as genetics, I think it's reasonable to think that without knowing even about the existence of genes, but having a caring and collaboration based society - we would've been a very happy, healthy and sane society.

    A great friend of mine is suffering Greatly from Depression. He has NO financial worries, NO drink or drug problems whatsoever. To the
    "Outside world" he has everything, but, his depression is Crippling him. His family and others, tell him to "Give himself a shake and waken up."
    If only recovery was that easy ! Who would WILLINGLY want to suffer continually in silence.
    Depression IS an illness that kills ! Please try to encourage sufferers instead of harassing them and making them worse. It's easy to "Have an opinion" on Depression but, if you've NEVER suffered from it then you CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT !
    Develop your Compassion and empathy and help people to recover instead of driving them to Suicide.

Where am I going ? And that was 18 years ago I now have five beautiful children a good job .
      Please I pray your friend find peace and healing recovers ..he will appreciate life in a whole ne way there's not a day goes that don't smile..I asked our souls creator to heal my illness and Allah answered my prayer..please be kind to yourself love yourself a little more each day..life is a temporary gift from above..it is cherished gift..

I fully agree. don't let other people tell you that you should be happy when you have no financial worries and have strong willpower to resist obvious painkillers like drugs(legal) and illegal, alcohol, food, sex, gambling... distractions like tv, internet... Gabor said it wonderfully. A human being wants to express his true being and be loved and accepted. We are deprived of open meaningfull relations and are attending jobs which are not meaningfull and then we become depressed as we are witholding these feelings to be expressed, we don't see a way out, people committing suicide don't want to escape life, but they see now hope for relief of pain and a solution to their deepest desires(not the futile materialistic or superficial desires) these are often a replacement for the real needs who where unmet.

Some people get depressed and commit suicide. Others get depressed and want to kill both themselves and others. Humanity is being able to recognize the unity of all things. If you aren’t able to understand the connectedness of all things then you can not have legitimate love and compassion for others, be they human, animal, plant or planet.

I went to the doctor to inform him about the dangers of brain meds and walked out discussed with the medical industry; as i started to tell him how the meds have hurt me he got up, took a step back, raised his arms as if i was aiming a gun at him, and said "Hey, don't shoot the messenger.". That was five years ago and i haven't seen a doctor since. How beautifully articulated, stress is caused largely because the forces influencing our lives are completely out of our control.

    50% of the daily stress in the USA is directly related to having your health insurance tied to a job. The other 50% of daily stress is knowing you can get fired tomorrow for no cause or because your boss doesn't like your socks.

    Can't believe this hasn't had millions of views ! here I am in 2019 and his message is still as relevant as it was in 2012 he said he wasn't optimistic about it not being. What a tragedy that it is still as relevant 7 years later. What are we learning as a society and how come we don't really see any change ?

    I had to stop the video on thr gut feelings part.. It hit me so hard, as I understand this apsect of what makes us whole in this body. All the beings living inside of us in communities, trying to keep the peace and balance..
    When I was battling with wanting to eat foods that were causing gut issues, I remember saying to my ND, "I feel like there is something else, like bacteria inside of me, calling the shots on what I consume. It's like I have no say in the matter and I don't realize what I've done until the food is gone!"
    It caused me depression, and I'd say that I couldn't trust my gut instincts while in a bad way. Who is to say that the overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria were not the ones changing my mind!
    It used to be such an odd thought process of mine, and hearing this man's talks are helping me to understand that I am not so odd perhaps, in how I relate to myself and my environment. I am grateful!
