- Come and take a peek inside one of Tyldesley's oldest and most Iconic buildings, Franks Cafe.
Established in 1945 the Cafe has seen numerous owners over the years from the original Frank to the most recent Mike and Robbie, who served here for 35 years and even had a late-night license.
The building itself dates back to the late 1700s and has many secrets to uncover. Currently under renovation as part of a project run by For Tyldesley and in association with Historic England we get to take a peek behind closed doors and uncover some fantastic history and secrets that lie within.
Big thank you to Ian Tomlinson for the tour and the rocket fuel afterward ;)

Spent my youth in Franks cafe, he had the greatest juke box with some classic songs a Light a nudge ten pee slot bandit and pac man.
That was all located in the bottom end near the fire place.
Mike n Robby we’re brilliant👍
Quality thanks for your history andrew
Good view of shack out of the window. Live 5 mins away. My hubby who is 64 used to go to Frank's cafe (he called it Frank's chippy) when he was a kid. Great building .
You keep bringing us top quality videos mate, well done again, have a top weekend brother!
Thanks Mogo you too m8.
Used to come here after a night out at 2:30am. The owners were lovely always had a good chat when I came in 😁 they did do haggis. I miss this place x
Wow 😮thanks 🙏I spent my youth in here ☺️ Frank he would let us hang out all night in the 70’s 80’s from the elements to chat laugh 😂 meet friends. I’m so happy to see this happy days 😢😊the shop on corner opposite was Bongs toffee shop made in site , smelled lovely ☺️Tyldesley was a fabulous town friendly everyone knew everyone 😊
Absolute pleasure m8 thanks for your history
Just round the corner from my work when I was a lot younger.. Looking forward to some good memories.. but none as good as the bacon and egg barms... they were the best
I don’t doubt it m8.
The only guy I know who can make an old rickety building sound like a Beverley Hills mansion😃..Top stuff again fella👍
Haha cheers brother!
Nice to know my local town is going to be done up. Lots of history in Tyldesley. Good luck on future plans
Fantastic video Clarky. I lived in Astley and went to Fred Longworth High from 1977/ 82
Frank's Cafe was a favourite dinner time hangout .. Meat and Tatty pie and a strawberry milkshake 😋.. Brought back happy memories.
I'm glad it did m8 thankyou for watching and taking the time to comment. All the best m8.
Had many a pit stop in there after a night out. Moved away from Tyldesley 16 years ago but to this day I still haven't tasted curry sauce as good as theirs
Another well produced and interesting video. Thanks for posting.
Hi Clarky, i have been binge watching your vids now for 3 days since i discovered you, (just top class vids btw) i have had my heart broken so many times seeing beautiful buildings, with so much history, so much history...about to be torn down, this made me sooooo happy to know that someone cared enough to save some wonderful places (especially this one, as the comments bear out how amazing a place it was to hang out) I feel just great, and i know i am late to the party, and also i have never been to manchester or surrounding areas, Fanbloodytastic mate!!!
Thanks so much mate I really do agree and appreciate your viewership.
Mr. Tomlinson is a real character - best from Madrid
Cheers Si and do you live in Madrid?
My family used to run a bakery in tyldsley called Dawson’s for many genorations but it sadly shut nice to see the area again
If only you knew how many Dawson’s pies I e eaten over the years! Il also look into this as it’s a proper part of local history. Everybody loves a good Dawson’s pie!
Notorious Frank's Cafe, was Tyldesley's equivalent to Atherton's Jackie's Cafe in 80's. Freddie's lot went Frank's and Ecky's lot went Jackie's.
Thanks for the history m8
I used to frequent Jackie's cafe back in the day when I was attending 'Ecky from 1982 - 1987. Iv been in Franks cafe a few times when I worked in Tyldesley. I live in Wigan now, not sure if Jackie's is still going or not.
Superb location, brilliant project. It just goes to show there is hope when committed people bite the bullet and decide to act. The quality of the built environment is one of the things that make towns and cities in Britain distinctive and special. It needs to be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Town planners please note: Lego buildings belong on the lounge carpet, not the high street.
Top video. Every town needs a man like Ian Tomlinson. Brilliant work.
Absolutely great explore Jay. Loved it. From the pic of front facade in red etc, looked so bright and happy welcoming. I love seeing old fireplaces tiles hidehoes ! The basement was a maze and the arched ceiling and roundish walls so old. At least it’s a restoration programme in the make. Not the usual flatten places and. Houses etc ..... that’s so sad. There’s so many happy memories for folk who went in there. Will be appreciated by them all and even everyone whose never been in. I love history and detail. You are one amazing guy Jay, top explorer film maker and historian. Extraordinaire. X. Regards and very best wishes. Di.
Wow, thank you very much Diane you just made my day m8.
@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt Glad you liked my write up. Well I’m honest and try explain in detail . My pleasure. Takecare Jay. Di
Straight in here after bar 110 every Saturday 20 years ago, good days, I always remember haggis on the menu 😂😂 good vid
Enjoyed that thank you , love bits of history
Here he is, the big JC! Another fab video! I can’t believe how many times I must have passed this place over the years, yet never went in or knew it’s history, yet it always stood out to me. Fascinating seeing inside and learning about its past, present and promising future! Thank you to yourself and Ian for the sneaky peak! Nikki x
Thankyou Nikki I’m glad you enjoyed the film m8.
Nice video. Enjoyed it. Thanks x
Another fantastic video!! 👏🏼
Only time I ever went to Tyldesley was on a Sunday when the fair was there I think there was a carnival in or something I was 15 and me and my mam ended up int half-moon pub. Landlady was the hardest woman I've ever seen. She butted some bloke outside who was causing trouble and knock him out cold 😂 happy memories 😂 great video once again Clarky 👍
Lol all landlady’s are the hardest brother!
What a fascinating chap thanks Ian, and Clarky of course who always asks the right questions to unearth history.
TOP ONE Clarky...cheers
I was expecting a great video but it surpassed my expectations Clarky.....so much history and the cellars were stunning...loved the rail track holding the floor up ... We, ll be visiting it when its done up but thanks mate .. you did a great job...Respect and Regards ..Frank & Lee...Lancashire Walks.....
Much appreciated Frank
Thanks Clarky that was a great vlog and Ian is a brilliant bloke doing a great job. I would have thought that old building was beyond repair but they're refurbishing it so fair play to them. Great view through the arched window of "Winter Hill", he must be wrong Clarky surely it's "Rivington Pike", Lol. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Pmfsl Ateves Repairs same difference f kid ;)
Nice insight. there's lots of interesting looking shops on the High Street in Tyldesley. Its great to see these places renovated with respect to the past. There's a 5 story building a bit further up on the square facing the church. they've been renovating it a while ...often wondered about its history. Thank you Ian Tomlinson.
Cheers mr random I believe Ian has something to do with that building m8 .
Another amazing look at history loved it👍 the country needs more Ian's keeping alive our history you are so right about the faceless buildings .… Loved those tiles they look so old and the fireplace ...yep really enjoyed it thanks Clarky 👍👍👍👍👍urban legend !!

You made me wait and what a wait it was, well worth it. As I knew it would be, hat's off to you Clarky outstanding work as always pal 👍🏻 👍🏻 makes a Manc proud to see restoration and not destruction of our heritage no matter how big or small.
Cheers Apollo and me too m8.
Brilliant video matey it's great that somebody is getting videos and pics of these old buildings before there gone forever. I work across the road from the old children's home you did in lowton and now it's gone ,completely flattened,so keep doing these video mate your doing a great job.
Thank-you Golbourne South
That was mint clarky an absolute gem you found there brother and I take my hat off to that man for restoring a treasured building. Keep em coming clarky your films are brilliant, that court yard was stunning it reminded me of the one you did at the graveyard and it still had the original cobble floor
Much appreciated Chris I’m made up you haven’t got bored yet!
Brilliant. Lived in tyldesley all my life.
These is a tunnel route between the town hall and what used to the kings head pub opposite the baths. The pub a few years a go had a mortuary slab in the basement
No way did it cheers darren
@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt yeah. Might be worth speaking to the Italian restaurant that is there now and see if its still there and if the tunnel is still open.
@@darrenlilley4584 I will do brother Im actually hoping to get access to the Town hall soon anyway ;)
There is actually a well at the top of well street (hence the name) there's a piece of tarmac that's a square that's a different colour that's where the well is it opened up in the late 70s and was covered up
Amazing video. I love how you document these places, just regular places but have a special place in so many hearts. This will mean a lot to many people, keep it up man. ✌️
Thanks a lot Sean I’m glad you see it like that m8!
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing.

Much appreciated Paul plenty more to come m8.
Brilliant can't wait to see the end result 😊
Thanks Clarky, awesome video. Although I have never been here, I have been to many old cafes around Manchester. Amazing to think what is just under the surface of the decor, not something I ever thought about at the time lol... So cool to see it being restored by Ian. Much love from New Zealand xx
Thanks, Karen and yeah he has a few more projects too that I'm hoping to take a peek at!
@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt Look forward to seeing them x
Nailed it again lad, love the history of our old towns 👏
I used to rent the shop front joined next door off frank in 70s. We had a cb shop in there good old days

that was awesome mate
Cheers Rex
i nearly didnt watch but so please I did
Great video Jason 👍
Nice one Clarky. That's walking distance from me. Just opposite, on the other side of the road there is a pub called 'The Hop and Hazelwood' ( I call it Hop 'n' Pop) where you can get a gorgeous pint of craft ale. Bit expensive but you won't find their beers in a supermarket or in many other pubs. Some of them are 7% plus though so just be aware if you're driving.
Is that the Black boozer with the settees in etc because if it is Ian took me for three pints of pure rocket fuel lol
@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt It's the one with the settees in and music memorabilia on the walls. Some tasty beers in there and always changing. It's pretty banging on a Wednesday night too with amateur musicians playing.
@@treva4286 Yeah thats where I went pal lol
Love the Polar Bear at 30.48
Lol
I remember going in chippy after a night out 😁
We need more guys like him to take charge to keep our. There's already been too much lost.
You've done it again another fantastic video full of History and information keep it up mate don't know if you'll be interested in exploring an old village and Farm Manchester Airport aviation viewing park buildings are old and do have history

The ghost sign has now been revealed (Sept 2023) I took a picture of it😊
Cool Il have a look when I bob past
They have been many a many fart go thru that old vent.

Hi I lived in the chippy
Oh cool how long ago?
IHA DA MEAL IN FRANKS 1962 IT WAS CALLED AN ALL IN PUDDING TATER HASH PEAS TEA BREAD N BUTTER 2 SHILLING N A TANNER FAB MEAL
History British history all being taken away. Mr John chemists mrs John’s shoes cobbler. English history gone day by day. Power by supermarkets. Sick tbh
:(
Need to contact you about a new location. The boards have just gone up.
It's a pub in Athert called Pendle Witch. Warburton Place. Town centre
I know it and I’ve drank in it brother Il keep my eye on it man for access!
So everyone knows, its still closed
How do you mean?
