Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg used a complicated legal framework in Hawaii called “quiet title” to sue ancestral land owners and force them to sell their lands. It was all to secure his private getaway on Kauai. After Native Hawaiians protested, using his own platform, he dropped the suits. But the damage is done, as AJ+'s Dena Takruri explored in this battle of land rights in paradise.

I thought the same thing, but in his reality, he would never have to see or interact with a Hawaiian, so out of sight out of mind. Just go from the private jet to the car to the compound to his private beach, pool, private dinners with personal chef, and so on... and then back home. I can totally relate to this. I too am Native Hawaiian. My ancestors sailed here on a cruise ship over 9 months ago. We drink chi-chi's from a coconut and eat poke provided to us by the local Safeway.

I'm a millionaire planning on becoming a billionaire, I donate to refugees, help plant trees and other plants to help w pollution, I give homeless packs out. And I only have 20 million imagine what I'll be able to do with 300 million or a billion. A lot more and actually make a difference. Most of my money goes to paying employees, really a billionaire businessman with less than 2 billion, isn't always truly a billionaire with how many people they have to pay.

This idea that well it’s been in my family maybe I own it maybe my cousin owns it we don’t really know it’s crazy and this is why they are “taken advantage of“ frankly I’m sorry but it’s their own fault at least the way the stories being portrayed. Now I did hear that they are also losing land because when the property taxes increase on a neighboring piece of property your property taxes go up also. This is what happened in California back in the 70s and people would lose million dollar property because they couldn’t pay the property taxes anymore so a fabulous gentleman who every Californian should say a little prayer for her at night Howard Jarvis came along and he helped get proposition 13 past which says that your property taxes are based on the price you paid for it and not the current market value and a maximum of 3% each year can be increased and that’s it so your neighbor can buy a house for 10 million and they were going to pay about 100,000 in property taxes and if you only paid $1 million for your home you were going to pay about 10,000 in taxes and that’s fair because otherwise people who bought a lower priced home now paying the same property taxes as people who can afford a much more expensive home which they can’t do

That one woman said she sold her land, but then she got all upset when she realized who bought it, as if the buyer bought it under false pretenses, but it sounded half-true to me. I guess she's making an accusation of fraud, if she's implying that contracts where entered into under false pretenses, but she never outright makes the accusation clearly, which winds up sounding like some vague and flimsy semi-assertions.
Not to defend Fukerburger here, but the presentation seemed very one sided, and not interested in asking those interviewed any hard questions. I think it's a mistake to focus on this problem, when it is really just symptom of a far more fundamental issue. The real problem is that the whole region should be independent and that is what people should really be fighting for.

To give actual context, Hawaiian law originally granted land ownership transfer to heirs without a written title. This has become complicated as single parcels could have multiple heirs without a recorded title, or even without the heirs knowing exactly what they own. Quiet title lawsuits are designed to settle uncertain title claims and establish clearly who owns what. In the event that clear title can't be established for a single heir, courts might decide to auction off the parcel and split the proceeds between claimants. Zuckerberg has likely been trying to either prove adverse possession of parcels that haven't been used in decades, or trying to get the court to establish clear title ownership so he doesn't run into issues down the road when trying to develop his property.
An honest, caring person, even if he could take advantage of the flaws in the legal system, would never do this. That just shows that Zuckerberg has no soul.
And you can include Oprah Winfrey who owns many parcels of land and other celebs and money hounds. They'll turn it into a new Malibu since land in Malibu is eroding fast and becoming worthless. Keep your eyes on them & wait and see.

I shed many tears watching this, especially when the young Hawaiian guy said workers will dig, throw their ancestor’s bones out and put a septic system in without any respect for the land. It broke my heart. Seeing those tourists floating around in their snorkelling masks, shopping and consuming, paying no mind to the land they walk on just made me so angry at this world. Capitalism is destroying culture, traditions, families... the very essence of life.

i deleted my FaceBook account over 10 years ago i think it was in 06 or 08. My mother and father in law worked on the FBI's project to data log all face book accounts when it was first sold to the FBI. Remember when the two, Zuckerberg and his partner who made Face Book in college split up, they split up due to the fact Zurker wanted to sell peoples info to the FBI, soon as they did, my in-laws got transferred to the department and started the files on EVERYONE who has a face book account, they told us and we all deleted our accounts. Every time you tag a person in a photo the FBI updates that photo to your profile so they always have a recent pic of you and locations are updated every time you travel or go anywhere. This is why they always monitor or go straight to face book when looking for someone. They own it. Zucker is just the "face" man for face book the FBI own it and use it as data collection points on everyone with a account.

This is how they gain knowledge by us giving it to them through stupidity and the need to be validated. so a platform( internet chat) is set up for us to give them our life activities and we obliged. When you own land you have to be there enough for people to know who you are and what is rightfully yours. I grew up in the city but my father owned 20 acres of woodlands in the Catskill mountains, When I was little we went there often, my father had big plans that he never followed through on and we stopped going there. When I was old enough to go by myself one day I had set up some empty cans to shoot at with my C02 BB pistol. A man I didn't know with a hunting rifle approached me to ask what I was doing there, he said We don't appreciate people coming here and making a mess, be sure to clean these cans up when you leave. I was clearly on my father's property and the man with the big gun was trespassing. Years later I drove up there to find a chain across the road to enter my family property and a man came out of a house that had been built since the last time I was there, he told me he put the chain and lock there to keep dirt bikes in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter from coming through, but he essentially locked me out as well. Since we didn't know each other he wasn't taking my word that I owned the land. It's not exactly the same thing as Hawaii but my point is you have to be visible and let people know who you are and what is yours.

Louisiana native here. I was fortunate to have visted the beautiful islands there. While there, I was made aware of the plight of the people. The disgust was written on a couple of our tour guides faces, and they couldn't keep it in.
I hope they get their lands back and keep the greedy out. 🙏
And when all this actions didn't succeed, they burned them alive to steal their land.
*The good solution* would be to sell the unregistered land to a family member or a friend, and then buy it from the friend again. In that way the native people can get their lands legal and registered as legit property.

What is the rationale that the land grabbers put forward that gives them the right and the power to force people to sell their land? Under the doctrine of Imminent Domain, that is used in America all the time, they say the land will be used for a project that the community as a whole needs. They couldn't use this rationale if the acquisition only benefited one individual. Forcing someone to sell their property undermines the whole concept of private property ownership.

I moved to Oahu in 1968 for UH and work. Haoles were the minority and it was as it should be. The greatest experience was the Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders that we interacted with. Cars on Kalakua Avenue had to stop if someone wanted to cross the street anywhere. Haoles had great respect for the other cultures we enjoyed. We had "local" friends. The Aloha Spirit was everywhere❗ There was no traffic on the North Shore. Maybe one bus a day. The beaches weren't crowded.
What is happening today is sad. When we lived there it was for the Hawaiian way of life. I lived the real Hawaii 🤙

In the late 1800's, my great great great Aunt & uncle were murdered for wanting to put up a fence around the property they just purchased in central Texas. Their families saved for years (generations) before moving from Germany. The land was apparently along a cattle drive some ranchers did not want fenced. The murders happened after they worked hard to build a house from the land in the middle of nowhere and then purchased fencing supplies. They moved from Germany because of religious persecution and the elite ruling class (Lords and princes) who owned everything and cared little for their people. Greedy people are everywhere. There is no escape.
