Pete, thanks for showing us this process. Most people have no idea how boards are built up. wouldn't be able to pull off the riser like that without the switcher working the back row. Can't wait for part 2!
It's much more enjoyable to watch someone else organise a pedalboard than to tackle it yourself for the umpteenth time. As much of a hassle as it is there's no beating simple pedals with a few knobs to tweak. Cool video. Bonus points for the great stage pics, they looked great.
I remember a few years ago I switched from a multi effects pedal to a dedicated pedal board with single pedals. I was watching a lot of different TH-cam videos to get an idea of how people had been setting theirs up and which pedals they had been using when I came across Pete's channel. I watched one of his pedal board setup videos and thats how I found out about Pete. Absolutely love your videos Pete, I hope this video spawns a whole new set of aspiring guitar players!
Thanks for putting these video's together. I'll say "ditto" to all the other positive comments you get from your TH-cam videos. I keep adding to my list of "Pete" tips I get from em. In a previous video you mentioned you would be putting a volume pedal in the effects loop so you could adjust volume during band practices. I have one on my board, when our drummer gets excited and louder during a set I can turn up to match him. The other thing I did was add this really cool "NosePedal". Just a volume knob in a box. It's in series with the effects loop volume pedal and I use it like a master volume. I also have a volume pedal driving my amp input, I can tweak how much I push the amp. Anyway thanks for great "Must Watch" TH-cam!
Awesome to see someone else using the freqout. I bought it and love how natural and real it sounds whenever you want no matter the size of gig or amp!! Cool vids Pete!
The Legendary . . . Pete Thorn is Now Using the BOSS DD-500 " Nice " with The MXR Reverb & MXR Echoplex. Great Video Pete. Best of Luck & much Success with the New Board.
Neat to watch the history, breakdown and rebuild. Noticed at the end that Pete included MXR's Phase 95 Mini with the Phase 90 and 45 circuits in a mini pedal. Yo, That Pedal Show! - demo on that way overdue. Great pedal! Understand Pete's attraction to the tc electronic HOF and Flashback, but MXR's Echoplex and Reverb simply sound better. Looking forward to Part 2.
I'm keeping my pedal board as is ... I built it myself based upon Pete and Dave's design 2014 (some pedal selections but mostly the signal chain and side-jack capability) of the board they just ripped apart ... ouch, that was painful to watch. It took me a six months to build after a year of acquiring all the pedals I'd chosen. My board (36 X 18 Trailer Trash) is my home studio board and I could have never built it without Pete's videos and the Strymon website where Pete explains his signal chain. Still considering a an OD / Distortion change ... my name is finally near the top of the King of Tone list. Pete's videos are where I discovered RJM (Y-not and PBC MM), the importance of ISO transformers and a ton of other info I would have not known to consider when building a board. Thank you Pete ... couldn't have done it without you!
Pete, it was great meeting you last night at the Spud for the Lukather Xmas gig. I enjoy your videos, your depth of knowledge, and your playing. I hope you have a great holiday, and thanks again for sharing your knowledge in all these great videos.
Nice rig. I didnt know Dave did your rig set up. I've been in talks with him about my crappy JCM 800 and a Hiwatt.... ;-} I've put off building a board for months now. I used to run 2 rigs for dirty and clean on a stereo rig into two amps...but that was torn apart a few years back and havent started a board build yet. I'm an old guitarist, so old school was a rig sent out into an A?B box, into a stereo amp set....m,any times with time based units through the effects loop, and not even on the board. I have been really trying to learn more about a switcher maybe so I can now rig clean/dirty/effects through the switcher in like 6 combos, all available through a preset, and just use the one board for anything I need. Great vid, say hi to Dave for me, and MORE PLEASE!!!!!
Had the DD500...couldn’t get it to replicate my JHS Pink Panther. Decided to get the Timeline and was (and still am) blown away by the Strymon sound. The only pedal I can’t live without.
Cool stuff. I especially dug the "Old Pedal Board Vignette" Well done & cool tune underneath! Good luck w the build..never enough room for the pedal obsessed :)
Another excellent presentation. Really looking forward to part 2, Pete! Will you be putting up a wiring diagram, or explaining exactly how this new board will be connected to everything? I have a huge board with many pedals like yours, but the wiring is amaturish, and connected straight through to go in front of an amp (or two, for stereo). I've been considering getting a second H9 with a switcher set-up like yours in order to get rid of a few modulation and delay pedals to downsize, but I'm clueless about the best way to wire them up to maximize functionality, so I'd love to copy your set up... Thanks for all you do for the guitar playing community, and thank you to Jude Gold for turning me on to you through his No Guitar Is Safe podcast!
So cruelly satisfying to see Pete Thorn actually struggle with something for a change - that unboxing tidbit was epic though you had a few of us worried with the way you were holding those scissors. :D I know how tight you are with the genius that is Dave Friedman, and this would take a lot of $$$, but...I can't help think how incredibly cool it would be if you were to work with Daniel over at GigRig to DUPLICATE your new Friedman board and then basically A/B them in terms of practicality, portability, ease of use, feature sets, etc... I think we all would love to see such a thing. :) What's the 411 on the new Pete Thorn album? I need MOAR... cheers and continued success!
Hello again Mr. Thorn! Thank you again for your assistance in helping me a week or so ago with my Loop on my Blackstar...still going well. I still need to add the Freidman BE OD and deciding between the Fulltone OCD V3 or the Robin Trower OD.....yes, the OD'S will stay OUT OF THE LOOP AND GO IN LINE after the Wah and before the Vibe!!! Now, you've hit me with a pedal I haven't heard of or seen from Boss...the DD 500??? I guess I'm going to try to find a review from you or somewhere on here. Tell me more when you have time...if ever!!! Thank you again for your great Videos and LEAVE THE UNPACKING TO YOUR TECH OR SOMEONE ELSE!!!!! You almost lost a couple fingers trying to get your new board out. Personally, I think you would want and need all of your fingers!!!!! No Boxcutters for Pete.....especially on Thursday Nights!!!!! Thank you again Mr. Thorn!! Keith Darling
Not only that but you tend to go back to basics. I try to use the least amount of pedals and limit complicated setups. Not everyone can do that depending on your music and band situation. But if you look at what we had in the 60's, 70's and 80's, the stuff on people's boards today sometimes resembles a small NASA project.
Amp A. Holic I never got to try out a lot of gear when I was young, being from a small town there was only a handful of us that took playing seriously but I'm making up for it now,
All I need is germanium fuzz, tube amp and a volume knob (and maybe a wah now and then). Back in the day I used to have a rack of digital stuff. Never again.
Would love a close up of the shelf that was built and a look underneath the pedalboard. Glad Mr Friedman is on the job. Does he plan on expanding his pedal board accessories to include a shelf, like in this video or maybe a bottom panel to hide certain pedal?
I see you have the Phase 95 on there. I have one on my board. It's awesome! More features than the normal one, and smaller. That blue LED is something I would change, though. There's no reason to have an LED that bright. If it was a quarter the brightness you'd still see it in a pitch black room. No need to cause blindness!
Re: fuzz - hey Pete, you should check out the Hoof fuzz from Earthquaker Devices and the Pharaoh fuzz from Blackarts Toneworks... they are both absolutely EPIC!
A little off topic, but would love to see how you run your Helix board too, and how it compares to the new board. Just while you're staying up 24/7 making videos on demand etc etc!
The Boss ES-8 lets you switch each stomp box's location in the chain and whether it's in front of an amp or in a loop PER PATCH. Just hook up via 4 cable method an you're set. I don't know if your new looper does that or not.
+Zach Coma yes- you could do that on the Musicom MK5- But I’ve chosen to use it in a different way, all of the pedals in loops are running in front on my board. If I want modulation in front, I will use the Mobius, and if I want echo or verb I’ll use the 2 mxr pedals. if I want time-based stuff, modulation, delay reverb etc. post amp preamp I will use the DD 500 and or H9
What type of Velcro do you use? Your pedals seem very tightly fastened to the board, even the heavy ones. With the standard product that I used on my board, they tend to let loose sometimes.
That is so interesting, why having Strymon Mobius Pete put MXR Phase 95 on the pedal board. Is Phase of the Mobius is not good? Could you give me an answer please guys
I could be very wrong, but it seems like you could get away with not using a riser if you put the top-mount jack pedals (H9s, DD500, Mobius) in the top row of the board instead of in front of the Musicom and use those SP400 pancake plugs for those pedals as well as the Musicom.
I use this board and h9 as well as the echoplex. boss switcher tho. this is really neat to see. kind of a confidence builder (lololol) for a dude like me.
I'll be very curious to know your thoughts on this new board layout 6 months down the road. After just going through the layout on my board last weekend I'm stressing some of my choices... and what I've got is waaaay simpler than what you've got going on. And I'm also a hack playing to the audience in the mirror....
Kemper needs to make a pedal modelling board so that you can have the ultimate efficiency without worrying about space constraints. If you can model any amp, I would have to assuming you could model most pedals or even improve on them. You're welcome Kemper!
Hi Pete, sincere thanx on all you do for us Thorn-gazers, you truly inspire man...A question, maybe not a far one, but why nor RJM PBC? I am in the process of buying and on the back your RJM PBC demo I'm leaning towards it but now... Musicomlab mk5 which I was unaware of..., is it down to size in the end for you because they oth seem like GREAT units. Much respect and thank you in advance...
I get a volume drop sometimes going through my MKV when I activate a loop.. when I take that pedal out of the mkv and run it by itself through my amps fx loop there is no drop
Ouch! I know that hurt.. But no matter what pedals get put on or left out one thing is for certain, you will still kick some mean ass with it. As always..
Pete, do you ever use rack fx processors? I would love for you to make a vid about rack fx's. For reverbs, detune, delays, i still prefer some older lexicon units. great channel and thanks
Great video Pete! Loved it! Can’t wait for part 2. Out of interest would dave be able to sell the shelf parts on the Friedman website? I’d love to buy a Friedman board but I need a shelf to add to it as my midi switcher is massive.
Hope the finished version looks better than it does now. Respectfully, it looks heavier, more cumbersome and more difficult to make adjustments to each pedal than did your old version.
Hey Pete I was wondering are they anyway I can ab two marshall 50 watts, I'm wanting to run one clean with a boss gt 10 multi processer and run my dirty side with reugular pedals is that possible, it must be really nice to have friends like Dave Freadman for a friend, answer me back Pete, I just bought one of Dave amps!!

The patching versatility, getting into one amp, or 2, or an effects loop is absolutely brilliant! Great ideas.....

Always nice to get a glimpse into a "pro's" world. Not just your world Pete but Dave's as well. Thanks for posting.
The Legendary . . . Pete Thorn is Now Using the BOSS DD-500 " Nice " with The MXR Reverb & MXR Echoplex. Great Video Pete. Best of Luck & much Success with the New Board.
we never got the 2nd part but we got a great composition to demo the pedal. It never gets old. I keep listening to it.
+eduardo arellano barreto thanks! I’m really proud of that track
Switching out the Timeline for a DD500? That’s a bold strategy Cotton, let’s see how it plays out for him.
Can't wait for part 2! I'd love to see you do a mini series of top picks for pedalboards aimed at different budgets :)
Good luck with new board. Can't wait to hear it.
I love the intro - it was like a baby book made into a video. I imagine you felt like a proud father
Neat to watch the history, breakdown and rebuild. Noticed at the end that Pete included MXR's Phase 95 Mini with the Phase 90 and 45 circuits in a mini pedal. So excited for this video! Can't wait for Part 2.
Dude that board is heaven!
Pete, it was great meeting you last night at the Spud for the Lukather Xmas gig. I enjoy your videos, your depth of knowledge, and your playing. I hope you have a great holiday, and thanks again for sharing your knowledge in all these great videos.
+David Yergensen great meeting you too!
I've still got this show! one of the greatest tunes ever! Really digging into this play Pete!
Greetings to Dave, the Genius!
Keep up the good work guys!
Dave you Rock!
Pete you are amazing!
Good to see this vid Pete....look forward to part 2
I am looking forward to part two. Just buzzed Mr Friedman about a double shelf pedal board for myself.
Nice rig. I didnt know Dave did your rig set up. I've been in talks with him about my crappy JCM 800 and a Hiwatt.... ;-} I've put off building a board for months now. Not only are you among the best guitarists out there, but you would have A+ if you were in my electrical engineering classes in college! Cheers!
Enjoyed this video a lot. Really Eager to see part 2. I keep checking for it. lol .

That box was bigger than you! But you conquered it. 😜 It's looking good so far. It will be the best looking man & board. 👍🏻
Really nice Pete. Congrats! You rock!
I do love pedal board videos!
Very nice cool pedalboard pete thorn thanks on your sharing stuff gig..

Time to geek out with Pete!
I love how Dave just couldn't wait to go to town with the pry bar...
I've noticed that the older I get,my overdrive tastes change. 15 years ago I couldn't get enough gain, now I'm right on the edge of breakup. .
That's most of us I think!
Not only that but you tend to go back to basics. I try to use the least amount of pedals and limit complicated setups. Not everyone can do that depending on your music and band situation. Need what the song calls for . Some high gain, some just bluesy sustain, some just a little Keith Richards . . .
Pete, in Part 2, can you explain why the DD-500 got the gig instead of a Timeline? Cheers.
+1
Nice board Pete!
Niiiiiice! Thx for finally doing this!
So much fun and satisfaction from redoing a board. Makes me wanna redo mine 🙄 Oh we'll rather not without this level of professional support...
Cool vid! Binge watching your vids and a new one pops up woohoo!!
Always learning!
Nice! I Looking forward to part two !Hope you get it out before christmas , lol
Interesting seeing the freqout being added. It did seem like you loved it in your review awhile back.
Love ave and the Crow bar!!! sensitive to your feelings Pete!!
best unboxing ever
Love the 2 tier boards :) They make life so easy ;) cheers
Looking forward to part 2 and the "why" you chose certain pedals.
Dave with a flat bar... classic!
Would love a close up of the shelf that was built and a look underneath the pedalboard. Glad Mr Friedman is on the job. Does he plan on expanding his pedal board accessories to include a shelf, like in this video or maybe a bottom panel to hide certain pedal?
Very beatifull video thanks regads from spanish fan
I almost started crying with the intro slideshow going back memory lane.

I would love to hear you play some low-tuned riffs with the Rufus Reloaded. That pedal is great.
Pete, great video as usual...Quick question... What brand shoes are you wearing? Really really digging those.
What type of Velcro do you use? Your pedals seem very tightly fastened to the board, even the heavy ones. With the standard product that I used on my board, they tend to let loose sometimes.
+Bart Dietvorst 3M dual lock!
Thanks Pete!
Does David use the same pry bar to take his clients hands off for his I want to sound like Eddie mod?
Dang, Dave is hard on the gear! Take it easy!
+Bradley Brekkaas he’s not normally rough with the gear really. Was hamming it up to make dramatic viewing ha
You switched from a Timeline to a DD500??
07:25 when he waves that crowbar. The terrification.
That is so interesting, why having Strymon Mobius Pete put MXR Phase 95 on the pedal board. Is Phase of the Mobius is not good? Could you give me an answer please guys
Dude check out the new earbud ball volume pedal
It's awesome and can also be used as a standard expression pedal
Nice, waiting for the next installment. Great watching all your vids Pete, rock on cheers. Why no Riot?
I could be very wrong, but it seems like you could get away with not using a riser if you put the top-mount jack pedals (H9s, DD500, Mobius) in the top row of the board instead of in front of the Musicom and use those SP400 pancake plugs for those pedals as well as the Musicom.
Fantastic! Heads up on a spelling mistake at 2:41. Should be "them" instead of "tham"
Hey Pete, nicely done! That looks bigger than my Friedman 15x30... Dave making bigger boards now? Cheers
Did you check if the Kidde Fire Extinguisher hanging on the wall is one(Model/Date Code) in the recent massive recall?
I use this board and h9 as well as the echoplex. boss switcher tho. this is really neat to see. kind of a confidence builder (lololol) for a dude like me.
Dave needs to offer the shelf as a kit for his boards! I had to build my own on a Pedaltrain, but I like the Friedman design better.
F.Y.I. Pedaltrain offers Risers, - to Lift the Rear Row of Pedals
+Chris Cooley He is going to do this. They will be available on his website
Michael Caz I have some of those boosters, but I am talking about a shelf that stands above the board with pedals underneath.
Haha. Best unboxing ever!
Fun stuff!
Hey Mr Thorne what happened to the sick as pedal ? What did you replace it with I was always wanting to get one
Hi Pete, excellent video, looking forward to part 2 and can I buy your old Board?
+John Roberts sure, maybe hit up Dave at racksystems@yahoo.com
I'll be very curious to know your thoughts on this new board layout 6 months down the road. After just going through the layout on my board last weekend I'm stressing some of my choices... and what I've got is waaaay simpler than what you've got going on. And I'm also a hack playing to the audience in the mirror....
Hey Pete just curious why you dont use an AX8 as a touring solution for size and versatility ? Perhaps have a couple of pedals to the side as extras??
FZ2 FTW!
Hey Pete, thanks for all the great videos you do! Question- Why not use the Gigrig G2? Very curious.
Pete - any thoughts on why you chose Musicom over the RJM Mastermind 10 switcher?
I get a volume drop sometimes going through my MKV when I activate a loop.. when I take that pedal out of the mkv and run it by itself through my amps fx loop there is no drop
Will it still fit in the bag/case with the riser?
Pete, why did you change the Timeline for DD500? part 2 please ; )
+Arthur Nam rarely!
Check out Michael Nielsen's channel. He's all about rack preamps, delays, reverbs, you name it.
I almost teared up!
Great video Pete! Loved it! Can’t wait for part 2. Out of interest would dave be able to sell the shelf parts on the Friedman website? I’d love to buy a Friedman board but I need a shelf to add to it as my midi switcher is massive.
+Ryan Davey Yes he is going to do it
Hope the finished version looks better than it does now. Respectfully, it looks heavier, more cumbersome and more difficult to make adjustments to each pedal than did your old version.
I wonder how you guys are going to fit the MIDI cables for the two H9s, they are to close.
Pete, is the new board with the shelf going to fit the carry bag?
