I think it’s due to the fact there’s not many shows out there that has normal people go up against people with superpowers. Most of these hero shows the villains seem less intimidating since it’s believable they can be beaten by heroes that also have superpowers.
There’s nobody on the The Boys side that can counter any of the heroes, since they’re normal people (except Kimiko, though she’s clearly not on their level).
Antony Starr makes me extremely uncomfortable just looking at him.
He sure did a good job.

I love how we can all agree that Starr makes us uncomfortable no matter whether he’s in character or not. There’s just something evil in his facial qualities.
Or maybe it's the fact that, like Homelander, he's also a psychopath in real life who has assaulted people and sent people to the hospital, spent time in jail, and is ironically a literal real-life example of the point the show is trying to make!
None of that is a joke! Starr almost didn't appear in Season 3 after he got arrested in Spain for assaulting a chef and endangering multiple people around him in a restaurant (in which he shattered a glass in some way - either by smashing it or throwing it against a wall when trying to hit the waiter with it)!
Seriously, if Starr wasn't rich and famous, he'd certainly be in prison right now! They weren't kidding when they all pointed at him when asked who was most like their character! Sadly, I hope Homelander dies this season - if for nothing else, to get Starr off the show!

Between filming Seasons 2 and 3, he spent a few nights in jail in Spain because he violently assaulted a chef in a restaurant, punching the chef twice, and sometime during the fight, a shattered glass was involved - either because Starr smashed it or threw it at full force against something or someone!
So, in short, his acting ability is *not* why they fear him "out of character!" If anything, I'd argue that *Karen Fukuhara* has nailed her character so well, given that people are so stunned to see her transition from in-character to out-of-character!

As much respect I hold for Thanos in the MCU, I never felt afraid of him. Maybe because he was so focused on what he wanted to do. With Homelander, it's a different story. When he is on the screen, he gives you the feeling that someone could die at any moment.

That doesn’t make Thanos a bad villain. His purpose is literally to be an understandable antagonist, the antithesis to someone like Homelander. Homelander’s purpose is to be as least understandable in a predictability/motivation-wise aspect as possible, hence why he is so terrifying. Thanos is not a good comparison.
