He started by encouraging the fungus to grow by placing it in a dark, warm place with plenty of starch and sugar for food. One of them got vinegar and I think that's the one that produced the block of cellulose gel? I wasn't clear on the two different trays. Anyway, once he's got his fungus/cellulose, he washes it until it's free of any acid or sugar, and dries it out so it's 100% dried fungus. Then he ground it up and mixed it with gum acacia, which is used as a food stabilizer and thickener, and that was the base material for the knife.
It's been a few months since I've started following Kiwami, and now I've learned his ways. Just as a reference, everything he does can be done with lower quality in way less time, but he puts in so much care every piece is art.
There is no way, is there? Either he's starting to employ stand-ins or an apprentice or there must been an earthquake in the region... I like the earthquake theory.

He's basically refining the materials.

He started by encouraging the fungus to grow by placing it in a dark, warm place with plenty of starch and sugar for food. One of them got vinegar and I think that's the one that produced the block of cellulose gel? I wasn't clear on the two different trays. Anyway, once he's got his fungus/cellulose, he washes it until it's free of any acid or sugar, and dries it out so it's 100% dried fungus. Then he ground it up and mixed it with gum acacia, which is used as a food stabilizer and thickener, and that was the base material for the knife.
It's been a few months since I've started following Kiwami, and now I've learned his ways. Just as a reference, everything he does can be done with lower quality in way less time, but he puts in so much care every piece is art.
