He started by encouraging the fungus to grow by placing it in a dark, warm place with plenty of starch and sugar for food. One of them got vinegar and I think that's the one that produced the block of cellulose gel? I wasn't clear on the two different trays. Anyway, once he's got his fungus/cellulose, he washes it until it's free of any acid or sugar, and dries it out so it's 100% dried fungus. Then he ground it up and mixed it with gum acacia, which is used as a food stabilizer and thickener, and that was the base material for the knife.
It's been a few months since I've started following Kiwami, and now I've learned his ways. Just as a reference, everything he does can be done with lower quality in way less time, but he puts in so much care every piece is art.
I like how he goes through the whole process of experimentation and shows us it works like we're not a bunch of monkeys watching a man explain how to make fire but we've already proclaimed him god
