If moving Islands in New Horizons is making you anxious, watch this guide to know exactly how to do it, and what you get to keep.
You might want to move your character from one island to another one because you got a new switch.
Perhaps you just got a new OLED switch and you can finally move your animal crossing character.
Ever since the November 2020 update added the long-awaited ability to transfer islands and/or players to a new Switch system. Here's what that process looks like for moving a single player.
Changing islands is possible so let me know how you get on. If you're not a mayor on your current island, you can follow this guide when it comes to moving island in animal crossing new horizons.

Ah, well I just wasted a lot of time taking all of my items and bells from storage and leaving it "safe" with someone else lol. I wish Nintendo made it clearer what exactly happens in the transfer process (because it sounded like all of my progress would be erased for good). Thank you for making this video to clarify!
sorry to hear you wasted all that time, but at least hopefully despite the longer path you still have all your stuff. The way its worded is VERY daunting which is why I was so reluctant to make the move myself after so much effort in the game. Hi there Sara. Thanks! Yes. You keep ALL your nook mile points. I have over 400K of them and I still have them. And definitely keep your bells. I’m sure the video covers that part. I’ll check back on NookMile in video as well just to be sure.

Hi there @Syed Razvi . Exciting times ahead for you if you become a mayor now of your own island on new OLED. Glad you enjoyed the video. I didn’t explicitly answer that question but yes. Your complete house storage is transferred which is how the outfit stuff works and everything. Mine is just as full now as on original island. In fact I just maxed it yesterday with the last 1 or two items and I have the house with all rooms and extra expansion.
I’m freaking out about doing this because I already started my happy home DLC and I wanna know if all the progress I made on there would be gone if I did this now with the DLC
I’m trying to figure out if this is the best method for me because I don’t want to lose my progress on happy home, and I don’t wanna lose my villagers either. So do you know if you can get your old villagers back since you can travel back to your own island?? And if so how? And if my progress on the dlc will be lost? Sorry for so many questions!!
Hi ZenaZing, I moved my character before HHP was announced so it’s hard to say what exactly will be carried across. To be sure I think the best thing to do is do the do a complete island transfer which includes yourself and anyone else on your island and (most likely) your HHP progress. So if you can want to transfer everything I think this is more likely to work but I haven’t tried this myself. I’d also recommend contacting Nintendo support for this very question as they might have had this question before. Would love to know your progress either way so please do come back and tell us what you did and what you got in the end. My gut tells me that your progress is tied to the home island more so than the character itself.
This video guide was for moving a character to a new island. Having said that, I was surprised that my Harv’s island (before the update) transferred with furniture I had set up inside.

Hi there inday d. thanks for watching. As far as I’m aware no. You can copy a whole island from one switch to another which copies EVERYTHING. Residents, humans, items. However if you want the equivalent of starting with all your stuff on new island your best open is to flatten your island. If you had a spare switch, a spare copy of the game and you’re not the mayor you COULD in theory move your person to the temp switch as per video. Then delete the game data from original and then use the island transfer tool from temp to original island to give you that equivalent result.

Thanks for this super helpful video! Did you have to do a transfer of your Nintendo account and save data over to the new switch first? Or did you just simply log in to the new switch with your account?
You’re welcome! All I did was log in to account on new switch. The game on the target switch hadn’t been launched yet just a solo Nintendo account.
So I had the exact same Nintendo account used on source and target. In fact there’s a third switch which it too has the same Nintendo account but is a different ACNH character (the Giovani of Alexi Giovani).
Take note of the prompts when starting switch because it does ask questions like “do you still have the old switch” and “do you want to play on just this or both”. I went with the yes to first question and opted to say in want to play on both. If you don’t, I’ve heard that your data from source switch is deleted. So just be careful when you first boot up the new switch. Hope that helps. If not feel free to respond back.

Hey Alex, question for you. I want to do an island restart. I was thinking of doing the method you have shared here. Only thing is the "target" switch I am going to use does not belong to me, I am temporarily using it and plan to use my original switch after the move. Will this be hard?
@e.s.4561 hi there. So you’ll need to borrow that switch which you may have to log into your Nintendo account there. Have a second copy of the game and perform the instructions (assuming you’re not the mayor on the source switch). After the move you’ll have to then do an island move from temporarily borrowed target switch back to your original switch. It sounds feasible though I haven’t personally tried the island move technique (yet). In theory it would work. I would LOVE to know how you get on if you try it out.
Can we do this and just move to a new island/start over on our only switch? I’ve hit a wall with my layout and want to start over but all my items and bells I don’t want to loose
Hi there @aurora vandenberg. Unfortunately this only works moving to a different switch whether it's a brand new one on that island or an existing one. I've heard you CAN work around this by moving your WHOLE island to a new switch, and then re-start on the original switch and then use the technique in THIS video to move your person to the new island on the original switch..
Worth noting I _personally_ haven't tried this but it's possible only IF whomever you're trying to move isn't a Major. If you are a Mayor, you're bound to that island :(
With the help of this video and another I created and moved a resident. My plan is to not upgrade Resident Services. I spent 3 long days restarting the new island to get the perfect island and, more importantly, the perfect starters. As I will only get 2 more villagers (the fifth villager triggers the upgrade) I was not sure if any on my villagers will ask to move out.

I'm currently doing the SAME thing ❤ I've just spent abo3 days unlocking everything for my character before moving her onto her island.🥵 I plan to keep nooks small and blathers and RS in their tents 🥰👏👏

That’s so cool Lisa! Will be interesting to have a permanent frozen in time RS and Blathers. I presume that means you won’t be able to get to 3 stars for terraforming, etc and you may well be fine with that. Would be great to tour the island sometime. Diana is a channel regular so we might manage to see hers.
@Alexi Giovani well I actually unlocked all that for her on current island with this plan in mind!! I made her as second character on my old island. Moving her to her new island on my new OLED 🥰
So she'll have terraforming, nook shopping app and harv's island

I just want to move out cause i picked uo a ugly island like my rivers are on bad position even if i do it different is it wort it to move island just because of this?
Hi Marax. Keep in mind if you’re the Mayor, you won’t be able to move. Only secondary, tertiary (as in non-original) players can move. If you picked the island then your only option is to re-roll the island. :(.
If however you still CAN move out, that’s not necessarily a bad reason to move. Many people regret their choices after a while. Everyone chooses the best they know how.
This is a good video, but I have a question. Do you have to have a house with an upstairs and basement?
hi there @ENA. Welcome to the channel. You're asking if you have to have a house with upstairs and basement to move?. I don't believe so. the benefit of moving your character from one island to another island (on a new switch) is that you get to keep ALL your items, progress, reactions, etc. I just happened to have it fully decked out as I'd been playing for a LONG time.
This is so useful, I bought the ACNH special edition Switch and I want to move from my old Switch Lite. Not sure if this can be done if I use the same account and user on both Switches and I want to move the Residents Representative to a new island...
Hi there Angelina. Unfortunately, if your character is a mayor on an island, you won't be able to move them so just keep that in mind. If you're NOT an island representative on source island, then you CAN make the move and become the resident representative (mayor).

Interesting fact this is that Harv’s island is tied to your account. I moved my character from another island to find that Harv’s interior was kept the same as before I’d left. So my custom designs etc and furniture.
I wanna move off my island but it won’t let me and I don’t have another switch, is there a way I could reset the island or move?
Hi borger gorl. What are you ultimately after? Are you the only player on your switch? Are you mayor or regular player?
Are you looking to get a new island with your established character?
I didn’t see the move to a new island on setting on the beginning what should I do?
Are you the mayor of the island (or island representative)? If you are, I’m afraid you can’t move yourself if you are. Only non-mayor residents can move.
I'm player 2 on our switch. We are about to get another one and I plan on moving islands. Once I get to the new island, will I become the island representative?
Hi there @Emily Tomlin. That’s the exact same scenario as this video. I was the 4th player and was looking forward to being the island representative. Yes. You’ll become the island rep/mayor if you start a new island on the new switch (as per this very video). Hi there Ghost. You’re welcome! The moving process is done in either a whole island copy/move or a character move. Both DO require a second switch. This video is about a character move which needs both a 2nd switch AND a second copy of the game (at least temporarily to complete the move).
Unfortunately Nintendo decided that ACNH would be a single island per switch for ALL players on the game.

Hi Lucy. The only thing I lost was my company on the new island ;). I kept all Bells, achievements, catalog, nook mile points, patterns, all storage items, things in pockets, recipes learnt. You even keep ability to terraform

The answer is YES. ALL your stuff in storage is kept!
If I move away one one account will it delete all the stuff on my main account?
Hi there @space_bunny. Thanks for your question.
If you move a character from the island (non-mayor), all the stuff on the island belonging to the other characters will stay. Your house will be removed. All donations will stay but be from anonymous.
When you move your character, you’ll have EVERYTHING you had in your possession in your house, pockets, storage, achievements, designs, DIY, Bells, etc.
You’ll leave a 4x4 empty spot of where your house USED to be.
I’ve also gone one step further and then created a new character on source switch using my same Nintendo account.

Am I supposed to have two animal crossing games or still works if I have only one? I got two switches.
Hi there Shiny. If you’re looking to transfer the character from one island to another then yes, you’ll need two copies of the game unfortunately. If you’re moving the whole island then you can get by with only one copy. Having said that, this video is about moving one non-mayor character from one island to another.
What if after all you did, you log in with your user on the source switch again? Is it gonna be like a newborn clone?
Hi there Egon. Thanks for your question. I've done this myself, and if you use the original switch (and thus island) with the same account you moved the character for, you'll start a brand new character on that island. So the person will be new, but on an existing island. Pick name, dob, etc
can you avoid a second copy of the game at all? I was going to set my daughters switch as primary so she can access my games (and I’d log in to play on mine). But this looks like you have to launch the game as the account that the player is attached to? or can *I* move *her* character across?
Hi there MrKlaw. You can transfer your whole island to your daughters switch if you like without a second copy of the game (different method to that if this video). It’ll be exact same replica. I think the original switch won’t have the game any more. Just consider though that if you were the mayor that might not be optimal. And you might be impacted to playing if your original switch is the primary. You can still play the game if you have the cartridge and even a digital version but it might well do a check on every launch and need her to be on internet to verify playing the game.
If she’s NOT the mayor on your switch, then you’ll just need a second copy for the move of your daughter.

So I can eg borrow a copy temporarily for the move (like a physical one) and then she could redownload the digital one from the store for playing? Her new one will be the ‘primary’ console so she can play all the games I’ve bought, and I’ll just log in as me to play them.

Interesting question Maya K I haven't visited my old island yet actually, so I can try it later on today and let you know!. I suspect, they won't, just as if you see them again on a mystery flight. The fact that we're 'Anonymous' for donations and stuff, I'd imagine the villagers will be as if they've met the Men in Black 😎
Hi there Maya. I have interesting results. My ex-villagers would still refer to me with my “pet name” but I couldn’t gift them anymore. It was like you meet them the first time, but the dialogue is different to what you’d get on foreign islands. It doesn’t have. “Oh. You’re from xxxxx”.

Hi there Orphan Crippler. If you’re NOT a mayor on your shared island you’ll be able to transfer your house and all your belongings if that’s what you mean.
When you move to a new island, depending if it’s already established, you’ll either become the mayor or become a secondary players like on the original switch/island. From 13:41 is all the stuff you get to keep

Did anyone do the restarting for Island layout thing? I can't find any comments on it yet but I really want to know. Also what about restarting after that, when you first get to the island to change the starting residents and airport color? I'm about to attempt this and would really like to be able to reset until I get what I want, but am too afraid to try unless I can confirm that I won't lose my character.
Hi there @Squirrels. The question has definitely been asked. I personally haven’t tested this but like yourself, not prepared to try it out and other comments didn’t have any response on whether it was possible.
Any news? I got pears again from the island that I moved from and Im on the verge of restarting. - is my resident data permanently saved and I just need to click I’m moving again or will I lose my character to the void?
I did it! If you quit then it'll keep your data but get more island layout options and it works just fine! No danger!

How long does the searching for a transfer request normally take? Mine searches but won’t connect to my source switch. I cannot tell if i’m doing it wrong or if its a system error?
Hmm. What order are you trying it Sarah? Mine was quick but I had to initiate it and then continue on at at 5:39 in video. Just confirming you too have 2 copies of ACNH?
@@AlexiGiovani Yes I have 2 switches and 2 copies of ACNH. I used the same Nintendo Account and User Account on both switches. I am initiating the request from the source, then following the directions from the target switch. The switches are not located in the same place so they are not on the same wifi, but I wouldnt think that would matter.
Oh! As in not the same room? I believe they need to be effectively close enough to play “local play” (hoping to do a video on that soon so keep a watch for that).
So if they’re not close by that my we’ll be the problem.
So since my sister has her own account from mine on her Switch (my old one), it means she cannot move her character over to my island?
Hi there Zheng. First question is, is your sister the ONLY person on the island on that switch? (That is the island representative or mayor).
If so, I’m afraid that’s correct. She won’t be able to move herself.
However, if it was your old switch and she’s NOT a mayor, then she should be able to move herself to your new switch.

@@AlexiGiovani yes, that island being my old island moved from my old switch. Looks like she had to start her progress all over, just on my island instead. Welp, at least having a second island to check for turnip prices isn’t a bad idea…
Does it delete the island for other users on the switch?
Hi there idk. Since the mayor stays behind (you’re not able to move yourself to a new island if you’re a mayor), the island stays on the original switch. In the video towards the end I cover off what it looks like to those left behind 18:17
I’m still confused on the linked user situation. What does that mean?
I’m not 100% sure what they meant with this message. I mean in my case my user was a Nintendo ID linked account but I’ve never tried without a linked user on my switch. When I moved my character I had logged in to create the user both on the source (original) and target (new) switch.

Hi there Sofia! It’s weird. The villagers sorta treat you like an old friend. They kinda know you but they kinda don’t. I found my villagers greeted me with a similar name (nickname) before I left. That’s at least how it worked for my character.

Hi i have a question, so my sister has an island. and when i made an account, it auto moved me into her island. So can i move out of her island but with the same switch/different account? (This would really help me)
Hi there Kolin. Unfortunately in New Horizons there is only 1 island per switch. So anyone who plays the game becomes a resident of that island. So since your sister started the game first, she’s the mayor and has all authoritive abilities regarding moving villagers, placement of ramps, etc.
unfortunately if you REALLy want your own island you’ll need another switch. (Yes. We ended up with multiple in this family). If you went down that route, and you really wanted all that _your_ character owned, you could move yourself to a new island and then this video you’ve commented on would come in handy. There’s also a more concise one too. Hope that helps!

me and my sisters are all one the same island so i hope i can do this
One of you will be left behind and one goes to a new island. Remember at the time of transferring a resident you’ll need a 2nd copy of the game. After that you can share the one cartridge though only one can play at the same time.

My girlfriend just did this today, and the only question we still have is, on her new island when will she get the option to build nooks cranny? Since she already has an upgraded house
Hi there Ken! Thanks for watching and asking your question. She will get the option to build nooks cranny after she donates 3 critters to Tom nook in tent who invited blathers which then triggers an update to town hall. So research says it could be as soon as 3 days
This link might help with the specifics as mine was a vague recollection. So on top of my playback you need to invite your 3 residents via nook mile flights and then donate 30 wood, softwood, 30 hardwood and 30 iron.

I have a question. My girlfriend and I started an island together on my switch and she is the mayor. She recently got her own switch with a copy of the game. She is planning on transferring the island to her switch. My question is, can I transfer my character from her island that was transferred to her switch back to my switch and start my own island with all my stuff?
Hi there Hydrah. Sorry for my delayed response.
I believe this is possible. You’d do an island transfer to her NEW switch which moves the WHOLE save game/island. If you then would start the game again on the original switch you’d effectively start a new island.
You’d need the 2nd copy of the game which it sounds like you have to then move back your non-mayor island back to the original switch on effectively a new island.
You’d then be mayors on both of your respective islands.

I wish i knew this before started my profile on my switch...i started out on my sister's island and i didn't know you could transfer...she turned my old house into a hotel so ...i guess at least something came out of it and i wasn't that far in the game i only played a few times just to see if i wanted a switch and this game...as soon as i played i went and got my own switch and animal crossing...but this would have helped me be a bit ahead...
How funny she just took over your place Benjamin! Shame you had to start again but if you didn’t have all that progress it can be fun to restart. I’m starting again with the latest challenge of Rags to Riches so this character I moved is finally deleted. I was petrified of all the history :(

Hii i have a question. Im currently the 2nd player on our switch but in a few days we are going to buy another one for me so ill need to transfer my date on the new switch. Hi there Choco. Congrats on the new switch. Since the mayor CAN’T be moved it means once you move yourself (as the 2nd character on the island), the mayor on the first switch will be left alone and be the only human player on that island (assuming there’s only 2 of you).
You’ll become the island representative (mayor) for the second switch though it’s worth mentioning that you’ll need a second copy of the game too. A resident move needs another switch AND another copy of New Horizons but an island move can be done with only 1 copy of game.

When you say transfer your data do you mean just the one character/player or the whole island? This video is based on moving a non-mayor character which sounds like what you would like to do. So your character will move to a new island on the 2nd switch and the first island will remain, just without you on it.

I’ve never done it personally but from what i understand is the whole island is moved to new switch with nothing on original switch. So it’ll be like playing on original island on original switch but playing on a new switch.
I'm trying to transfer to a friends island but it won't let me cause I have a existing island so the transfer request can't be sent cause I have a island on my switch already I'm so lost on what to do
Are you doing it in the same room on a local connection? Are you just a regular resident (not a mayor)

I believe you’re unable to move your character unfortunately if you’re a mayor.

I'm about to do this in a day or so, and your video is so reassuring! Hoping to get a good island layout for the new venture! BUT -- I have a question. When I get to my new island -- can I over-write/change out the custom codes I use on the new island WITHOUT impacting the island that I moved away from?
Hi there The4forfun! I know what you mean. It was really stressing me out. Hope you get a great layout too. Apparently you can try again until you save if you don’t like the layout but I haven’t personally tried it.
As to your question, yes you can change it with no impact. It’s a carbon copy at the time of move but are independent. The other island can change designs without impacting you and vice versa. You can change yours without fear of affected the other island.

Yes you use the same login but when you sign in be sure to say that you’ve still got the original switch when you first sign into the NEW switch. Remember if you’re transferring you character you’ll need a 2nd copy of the game (even if you just borrow it). I personally was able to visit “myself” when I had two different characters. Alexi and Giovani.
Admittedly I could only visit my original island via local play using a different character. I think this had more to do with the HHP DLC than the actual game itself.
Just to clarify. Switch 1 resident moved to switch 3 (OLED) which is what this video was built on. However I had two characters using the same Nintendo account on switch 1 and switch 2 for about 6-8 months and was totally able to visit myself and help water.
As mentioned in other comment I think it was a problem later more to do with the HHP DLC once my resident moved from switch 1 to switch 3. I then created a 3rd character to replace my original moved out player on switch 1.
I might be able to confirm this theory if I now try visiting from Switch 2 to 1 (after I wiped the island for Hard mode)

But how would u save the data do u go to data management or what
So you have to do it over local play with two copies of ACNH. Once you move your character to the new island and the first save is enabled all your data is available on the new island as per the video. Does that make sense?

So this video guide for moving island is all about moving your character from one switch to another switch (a new island).
If you want a new island effectively and only 1 switch unfortunately you can’t do keep your character AND have a new island.
However if:
• your character IS a NOT the mayor
• you can borrow another switch without the game already on it with a second version of game
• make a dummy Major on new island
• move your character a second player in new switch
• start a new island on the original switch
• follow this guide to move your character back to your first player and mayor on original switch.
Note I haven’t personally tried this myself but have heard others have done it. It’s long winded but possible and then that’s the only way I know to restart your island on original switch and keep your characters progress.

Hello Alexi, I'm currently moving my character to my new switch from my daughter's lite. Do I need to purchase another download for this transfer to work?
hi there mnm4ever. When I did this, I went from source switch which was an e-copy of the game. The 2nd switch (or target) was using a physical game card. I believe (hope) I mention that in the video that you _do_ need two copies of the game for this to work. Note I haven't tried with 2 e-copies (assuming you might be doing family sharing or something). I'm worried about doing that version has it's a bit complicated with the anti-piracy that Nintendo puts in. So as soon as you move using the game between source and target switches it might do a check to ensure only 1 switch is accessing the game at the one time. For that reason I'd recommend having a physical 2nd copy (I know it's a bit more expensive).. Since you're moving the same character on the same user on both switches I fear you might run aground with a single shared instance of the e-game.. Hopefully that makes sense.

Hi @Jasmyn. Thanks for watching and commenting. AFAIK. Yes. For a full island transfer I believe a single copy needed. But for a character move you need a second copy of the game.
In my case I used e-copy on source switch and a physical game in target switch.

Hi there Sleepy_Bunny. I’m not sure what you mean about being saved? If you move your character to a new island that you just started on a new switch then Nook’s Cranny won’t exist yet. Unless you’re moving to an already set up island.

When you meet NPC characters for the first time on the new island do they remember you from the last Island? Or do they reintroduce themselves?
Hi squirrels. Thanks for your question. Do you mean when you visit your old island when travelling from your new island. I think I covered this in my old video (I have two on this topic) but they seem to be familiar but not the same as if you lived on the island. I found mine calling me by my nickname but didn’t treat me like a bestie but not like a new visitor. So sorta in between.
My answer was more for villagers but maybe you mean Tom Nook and Nooklings. If so, they treat you like new person even though you have all your old stuff.

Hi there Francine Jade. By friends do you mean via friend code and best friends in ACNH. That’s a great question. I believe you keep your friends since it’s still linked to the same account and character.
When you start a brand NEW island with the same user (but different ACNH character) I believe you’d have to re-friend. I’m not 100% sure but I haven’t had to re-friend those I was already friends with the past 8 months
If I ever got a new switch I would upgrade my 2nd players house to the fullest extent on my town and then send them to my new switch so that I have all the apps and things already

Can you name your island the same as your old island? Can you ever go back to your old island?
If you’re transferring your character to a brand new island on new switch you can name your island whatever you wish. And absolutely if you still own/have the original switch with original island you can most definitely visit it (as long as there’s someone on the island to open the gates for you etc

In the comment section this person said they rerolled (due to recording issue) and it still saved the transfer data for the secondary resident.
TLDR YOU CAN REROLL A LAYOUT FOR A RESIDENT TRANSFER
