- The November 2020 update added the long-awaited ability to transfer islands and/or players to a new Switch system. Here's what that process looks like for moving a single player.
Please note the Island Transfer Tool is NOT used when moving a single island resident to a new island/Switch. All you need to do is press the - button on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons start screen to open up the settings. Then you can start the process by talking to Tom Nook. I just wanted to chime in, like a year later, and say THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wanted my girlfriend to be the Resident Rep on our Switch, but now I'm realizing I wish I had more control over the island layout & I'm getting my character swapped over to a new Switch in a week.

Do you know if you can still do the process of choosing an island and restarting if you don’t like the airport or layout? Or does that delete your whole character if you do the moving from an existing island process
@@WHAATEVEN You can restart any time, I did it 10 times before actually deciding for a map I liked and also restarted once after arriving at the island of which I didn't like the airport color. It's no difference to a normal start of the game. Your data will be recognized as often as you close the game without saving.
Did you becone a resident representive in the new nitendo switch? Or do you just become a resident again?

@@aang3267 Some people myself included wouldn't mind stuff we missed from earlier events we can ask friends if they have spare or if we ourselves have spares. To drop it on thier island and come pick it up on our new one.
I was so mad to find out that buying a physical copy as I have digital wouldn't allow another island, or buying a new memory stick. To me, that is Really dumb even more so becuse they should put a warning like that on the back of the box and in the online desicripitoion for digital download so more people don't fall into that same trap. I don't mind sharing to a point as I personally don't have to but I would like an island in both hemeshiperes and to have 2 islands to decorate.

Thank you! I joined ACNH as an additional player on someone else's island last May. I love ACNH and wanted my own island. I received a new switch for Christmas but have been delaying the set up of my new island. I was debating moving my existing avatar or creating a new one. Super late question, but I've read the Nintendo website info, seen many video, read lots of info and still confused by this one point: Are you using the same account with this transfer or did you create a new account and get a second copy of the game for the new switch? Or can you create a second account and use the digital copy you already paid for on the new switch? If I remember right from everything I have read, you can have up to 8 accounts per switch (or is that users?) I get confused on this - some do some don't and I do not understand the difference between the 2 ways there. I think I keep getting mixed up by user vs account. I have one other resident I want to move to a new switch (not the island) but I do not understand if I need a second account ...and then there is having a second NSO account too - that's another subject though. Sorry for the lengthy question.
Do you get to keep things such as hair styles and wand outfits? Also do you get to keep the clothes you were wearing while you moved? And do you get to keep your friends on your friends list? Also I have the Sanrio amibo cards. Do you think I have to rescan them to unlock their items again in the game or should I still have them?
I'm pretty sure you keep all of those: hair, wand outfits, clothes you're wearing, friends, and Sanrio items.

I played on my boyfriend's switch and now I have my own! I keep running into the sam problem with a ' communication error' and it wont let me move to a different island.
Hi, this is a very helpful video! Thank you for making it~ though I have a question: my sister is the secondary player on my island and want to move but her Nintendo account isn't linked to her email (basically a guest account in a way), can the transfer still work or does my sister need to register her email with the account?
According to Nintendo, to transfer a resident, you must also transfer the player's user account to the new Nintendo Switch console. And to do that, it seems like the user account needs to be associated with an email address.
What does Nook mean at 0:45 when he says “Oh! And I can’t move players who are linked to a user account on this Nintendo Switch system”
I think that's in reference to his earlier statement about transferring on behalf of another player. So I think those players need to be moved using their own Switch account.

How does transferring your bells work? Are we able to just leave our bells in ADP? If so, how soon are we able to access our bells?

And bells should be exactly where you left them. I believe bells with your character will be with you right away. While the rest will be accessible again once you wake up from your night in the tent. So they'll still be untouched in the ADP.

Hello there, first of all, thank you for making this video. It is extremely interesting and informative. I didn't even know that this was a feature until I watched.
So, I've had this video favourited for a while now and I want to finally try transferring a character of my own. Ngl I'm pretty nervous about it and I have a couple of questions; are u able to quit out of the game if u don't like any of the maps, or would I have to repeat the whole transfer process again? In other words, do I need to pick from the first 4 maps I'm presented with and just deal with what I get? Or can I reroll?

Hi! Yes, you can quit out of the game and try for a new map without messing up the transfer process. We accidentally did that when making the video.

Hi I’m just wondering if you can ‘reset the island map’ when transferring a new character over and have it keep everything for you!
Yup! I actually accidentally did this while recording and had to edit out that part. If you restart the game after transferring things, you'll encounter Timmy & Tommy again and get to rechoose the island layout.
I have 2 questions.
1. Since my account transferred from my brother's old switch to mine,Can he move me to my island?
2.Does timmy and Tommy automatically do the moving process? How we're they already ready? Thanks!
If I'm understanding correctly, I think as long as you aren't the island representative, he should be able to move you.
Timmy and Tommy should automatically show up when starting up Animal Crossing with a user who has never opened Animal Crossing on that Switch.

OK I don’t know if anyone’s but I think I messed up bad. I wanted to transfer my island to my new switch but I selected a resident I deleted years ago and I no longer have the account active. I really wanna send it to my original resident but I don’t think there’s anything I can do? Does anyone have any tips?
So a question, if I transfer my player (not representative) from the old Switch will the villagers on the old island forget me? I am asking because I might soon get a new Switch but I would still visit my brother's island so it would be really nice if the villagers there remembered me.
I am looking for this info for some time and sadly the support page says nothing about it in what's transferring and what is not.
The villagers don't seem to remember that the player used to live there. They'll recognize the player, but otherwise treat them similar to any other player visiting the island.

Wondering about the name of your new island - "Transferia" - did you make that up? I didn't see in the video where you got to name your new place.
Yes, you do get to name the new island whatever you want. That part might not have made the video because I did run into a recording issue at one point.

Do you know if you will keep all of your Happy Home Paradise progress (being able to redecorate villager homes on your island, etc.)?

Hii, me and my friend both play animal crossing but we want to restart together and live together. When I talk to Tom nook he doesn’t let me move to another island or move another player. Is there a way to fix this?
Can you still terraform when you move or do you have to build back up to it?
If you unlocked terraforming on your old island, you should still be able to terrform on the new one.
The tutorial was great, but is there any way to have some one else to live on the same island as another player? I promised my sister that I would find a way for her animal crossing charatcer on her switch to live on my island on my switch, but everywhere i looked only talks about the co op feature even though I want to do it with 2 switches on one island.
Sorry, there's no way to share an island across two Switch systems. If you want to live on the same island, you need to play on the same Switch.

Did you had to redo the kk slider event to unlock island terra forming or was it already all available?
If you've unlocked terraforming, I believe you get to keep access to it. But you'll need to redo the K.K. Slider event to get him to come to your island on Saturdays.
Hey, thanks for the video. I am getting a new switch, without this sounding to confusing. When moving the second player to a brand new island on the new switch. Can I be logged in to the nintendo account of that second player on the new switch or does it have to be another new account?
Hope that makes sense, i read somewhere online, when starting with the new switch to use another new nintendo account (not one used for second islander/second switch account on previous switch). All so confusing to me!
So, whichever account you're logged in to on the new Switch will be the same account that inherits the AC player. For example, in this video, Tess was logged in on the old Switch and the new Switch. So the AC player stayed associated with Tess. If, say, Bob was signed in on the new Switch when receiving the AC player from Tess on the old Switch, then Bob would get Tess' character. I think that's how it works, at least. Does that answer your question?

Hi! I’be been playing on my flatmates nintendo, but I’m going to get my own one soon. He doesn’t play ACNH very much at all, which as island rep, has made my individual progress slow. I’ve made most of the contributions to the museum, and I’m wondering if you know what happens there? Do you have to start the whole thing over? Is it just your personal belongings + bells + miles that u take with you?
Yeah, the museum on your new island is something you'd have to start over, unfortunately. You're right, it's basically just your personal belongings and info that transfer over.
@@MadsAboutYou If you have a variety of fish, bug and sea creatures in you storage when you transfer, can you donate these to the new island’s museum, or do the fish etc. have to be caught anew?
@@NinaS___Oh yeah, you can definitely keep stuff for the museum in your house/storage and then donate them after the move.

When you transfer an individual resident to a brand new island, does transferred individual on the new island unlock all the shops, museum, teraforming etc all over again?
A new island has to be started by a new resident. So you can't create an island and then transfer a person to become the resident representative. Shop and museum upgrades are tied to the island, while stuff like terraforming is tied to the resident.
Hey, does the transfer take a while? Did you edit the time out? Its' stuck on the transfer request. Does my old switch have to be near it again?
I did trim back how much time the transfer took, but it couldn't have been longer than a minute or so. I'd say make sure your old Switch and new Switch are near each other the whole time.

They need to connect locally.
If I close the game during the tutorial, will my character data still be there when I run it again?
Yes, if you turn off the game after landing on the new island, your data will still be there.

We happened to have two copies of the game, but I'm not sure if that's necessary or not. I've heard of people having it downloaded on both consoles, so maybe it's possible?

Yup! Because of a recording error, we actually ended up turning off the Switch after landing on the new island. After turning it back on, we were greeted with Timmy and Tommy at the airport and were able to choose a different island but still keep our character from the transfer process.

When doing the transfer, do the Switches have to be near each other or can they be far away?
I think they need to be close enough to wirelessly communicate. So they should be in the same room, probably.

Unfortunately, no. That would be helpful, but I think because of the way save data is set up, it’s not possible and would be really complicated for Nintendo to set up. But yeah, once you’re the Resident Representative, you’re stuck there unless you restart. 😕

Wait so all that's different is that you'll be in different clothing when you start anew but it's still your character?
It's like moving in real life. Your person is the same, with all of your inventory and everything. And after your first night, your stuff gets unpacked and you have your house and storage again.

Your NookPhone bug and fish records should all stay with you. And any bugs or fish in your home or inventory will also come over. But the stuff in the museum will not come over and you'll need to collect that again.

Okay so bare with me (if you could please answer this) so my son is a resident on his dads island but his dad no longer plays (but he was the owner of the island) Could my son possibly move to my island for a bit and then move him back if we restart and erase all data from the 1st switch (dads ac account) to make him the registered main island person? Is this possible? I’m hoping it is.
Yes, you should be able to do that. The only stipulation is that I think all the Animal Crossing data would need to be deleted from the 1st Switch in order for your son to move back and be the Resident Representative.

This video is for people transferring their character to a new island, leaving the old one behind. There's a separate process for transferring everything (island, characters, etc.) to a different Switch.

This process in the video is if you are just transferring your character (or characters if multiple) over and starting over to another switch!

Nope, it won't crash! We actually accidentally did that while recording this video, and it kept all the moving data just fine.

If your cousin moves to your island, she'll only be able to play on your Switch, not her own. But yeah, this would be the process.

Yes, you can restart if you aren't happy with your airport color or starting villagers. You won't lose your data.
Do you still get to name your new island and does the villagers from your old island still remember you
Yup, you get to name the new island whatever you’d like. And the old villagers remember you in a visitor kind of way.
Does this work over the internet, can I have a new switch and get my character while I'm in a different state?
I'm pretty sure you need to have the Switches communicate over local wireless for this to work.
Does your items and progress carry to the new island? Also, can you earn new stuff on the new island and relocate back to the old island?
All of your belongings should come with you after spending the first night on the new island. But you'll need to progress through things like the museum and the Nook's Cranny upgrade again. You won't be able to relocate to your old island since Island Representatives can't move away.

I was thinking if I delete my old user on the old switch then migrate my character back to the old switch but since my I have become the representative on the new switch it won't work huh. I guess the only way to transfer back and forth is if I create a new user as an empty place holder on my new switch and have that as the representative then transfer my main file over to the new switch island as a resident instead. That way I can move my main file back and forth between 2 switch island?
@@st4r444 I think the only way to do that is if the placeholder character is the first one on the island. That's because the game doesn't let you change who the Resident Representative is.
@@MadsAboutYou right. That's what I'm thinking. Create a dummy user 1st and play the game from start for bit then transfer my save as 2nd user. Do you know if residents can invite other players to the island even if they're not the representative?
Do you need any cords to connect the two switches ?and can you make a new Nintendo account on the new one and still switch over
No cords needed--it's all wireless. And I think you can make a new account and still bring over a character? I'm not 100% sure since we used the same Switch profile on both systems.
Whichever profile you open the game with on the new Switch is the one the character will be attached to. So if you were moving the resident attached to Bob on the old Switch, but instead opened the game on the new Switch using Fred’s profile, it would be Bob’s old resident attached to Fred’s profile. You can’t change the name of the moving resident, but you can change which account it’s hosted under.
Disclaimer: I’m 95% sure this is how it works. I haven’t explicitly tried it in this particular way.

Hi! You don't need to delete or create any accounts to do this. You just need to have your Nintendo account logged in on both the old Switch and the New Switch, IIRC.
And I think the part you're referring to is when Tom Nook is talking about the Resident Representative? The person who made the Island unfortunately can't be moved.
To talk to Tom Nook, enter the Settings screen from the Animal Crossing start screen by pressing "-" I think. It should say in the corner of the screen.

@@princessdailia That's up to you whether you keep your Nintendo account on your brother's Switch. But your Animal Crossing character should be completely gone from his island once the transfer is complete.

It's not working, Tom nook won't let me move because I'm the island representative, I just can move the entire island and that is not what I want to do....
Yeah...it's really dumb, but it seems like island representatives aren't allowed to move off the island. I wish Nintendo would change that.

For your character? Unfortunately, I don't think you can rename an existing character.
My daughter is young and so she has a child account linked to me. She just got her own switch and her own animal crossing game so she wants to move off my island but doesn’t want to start over. Can we do that?
As long as she’s not the resident representative, she should be able to move over! 🥰
My sisters want to move to my island - we all have our own switch and animal crossing games - can they move to my island on their own switch? Or do we all have to play on mines ? ( we have switch lites btw)
You can only have one island per Switch, unfortunately. So yes, if they move to your island, they'll need to play on your Switch.

You can move to the island, but you'll need to play on that friend's Switch. An island can't be shared across multiple Switch systems.

Both Switch systems need to be close enough for local wireless.

I have a question. My brother and I share a single Switch, but we have an issue with what to do with the island (The original) . We keep wanting to move things around and it’s frustrating for both of us. He has his own account and wants to move off of the island. My question is, if I move him off the island, will the original island still be there on my account, potentially giving us our own islands to work with?
Yes, you'll have the original island and he'll have a new island, but you'll need two Switches to do it.

What happens if you don’t like the map you pick and need to restart?? 😰
You can close the game and reopen it. It will remember your transferred data. This actually happened to us accidentally because of a recording error. We initially had a different island layout and starter villagers, but quitting during the tutorial part gave us a new map and everything without losing Tess.

You need another Switch in order to move to a new island.
Hello i have a question for this
Im the one person who started the game but my grandma and my brother lives on it too so what will happen if i move off that island to another will they follow me? Or stay on that island?
If you are the person who created your current island, then I'm afraid you won't be able to move. :/

@@Touyabae I’ve heard of people transferring their whole island to a new Switch, and then having their family members move off it back to the first Switch to start their own island. Maybe that could work for you? Depending on what your goals are, of course. :)

Are you allowed to go back to your old island after you create a new one?
Yup. The old island will still exist after you move and you can still visit it like you would anyone else's island.
Do you need two copies of acnh in order to transfer a character?
Yes, from what I understand, you need two copies of the game to do this.

You name the new island once with Timmy and Tommy, just like when you started a new game.
Ok, but when I got to the moving process, it always has an error, I've been trying for months qnd can't find any help? What do I do?
In which part specifically does the error pop up? And what does the error say?
@@MadsAboutYou so it finds my character on the other island fine, I press okay, it starts moving process, but then it stops and says "communication error occurred" with that little mole guy in the corner, and I can never get past that part
@@bryannaw1212 Wireless communication errors are unfortunately common with Switch systems, especially with Animal Crossing, for whatever reason. Problems are also more common with older Switch systems.
You've probably already done this, but make sure the two systems are close to each other without things in the way. Also make sure you don't move either system around while they're communicating. And I don't know if it will make a difference, but keeping each Switch away from other devices with wireless communication could help reduce interference. If none of this helps, I'd probably advise calling Nintendo and seeing if they have other advice. (Their customer service is usually quite good, at least here in North America.)

@@bryannaw1212 ☹️ Jeez...that's not good. And as far as I know, it shouldn't matter if either system is normal, Lite, or OLED. You may need to call Nintendo..

Just the one that you select to move is moved.

Yes--since there can only be one island per Switch, if you want to move to a new island, you need a new Switch.
Haven't gone to that point yet but, are you able to choose a new name?
The island gets a new name, but your character name stays the same.

@@cherrynewman8993 You're moving away from one Switch/island to a new Switch/island. Your character and their individual progress comes with you in the move.

I’m trying to move my gf to her own island cuz we just got her a switch but we keep getting a communication error when we start the process :/ any tips??
Weird...are both Switch Systems physically close to each other? There could be something interfering with the signal, especially if there's anything in between the systems. Otherwise, I'm not totally sure what else could help. Maybe double check the systems and games are fully updated? Or do the tried and true method of turning your systems off and on.

@@tapiocasan8755 Hmm...have the Switch systems ever had trouble keeping a stable connection when doing other local wireless things? I've noticed that older Switch systems tend to have problems keeping a stable local connection. (But no problems with WiFi.)

@@tapiocasan8755 Yeah, I think that's the most likely explanation... The only thing I've found to help with that is keeping the system completely still whenever it does anything with local wireless. But it's no guarantee. :/

In theory, yes? But only if they aren't Resident Representative on their current island and if they're OK with basically being stuck on your Switch.
