Would you put the heat shrink on before or after you compress it ?

You left WAY too much tail sticking out of the sleeve! We high-steel riggers HATE to get our fingers jabbed by those little devils! Depending on the gauge of the wire rope, (that's the proper name) I start with about 1/8" - 1/4" sticking through the sleeve. By my third press, it's flush with the edge.

Leaving it flush with the edge makes it prettier and less likely to draw blood, but it also decreases the strength. We rely on that uncompressed tail as part of the system. You can do it however you want, but if I am inspecting an aircraft with no tail sticking out of the sleeve, it is no fly!

Ever hear of electrical tape or gaff tape? Just tape the ends and that problem is over, cmon man.

AC-43.13-1B page 7-33, " If the cable end is inside the sleeve, the splice may not hold the full strength of the cable." I Know its an old comment but its better to state actual sources then peoples words.
