    Thank you so much for making this very informative video. I have a vinyl coated stainless steel rope that has diameter of 1/16 bare wire and 3/32 diameter coated. And I bought sleeves for 3/32 diameter. But now, I learned that I should cut the vinyl before putting on the sleeve. Is it okay to still use the 3/32 sleeve since it will anyway flatten upon swaging?

    How much weaker is the connection if the vinyl is left on? What percentage range would you estimate? I only need around 15% of the working load for my application but I did it over the vinyl. 1/8" cable

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Vinyl coating should always be stripped prior to the swage since the vinyl can loosen and slip out. We've seen lots of swage failures over the years due to leaving the vinyl coating on. So, in your case, we recommend that the cable assembly be replaced. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your project!

    What about overhead lifting, such as a platform lift ?

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  ปีที่แล้ว

      With properly swaged eye-splices, you can successfully suspend rigging overhead. As long as you're not shock-loading and you're within WLL, then you should be fine. You can read more on the blog here bit.ly/3IvgehA

  • @ckac730

    Great video. Thank you very much.
    One question, at the start of the video, your loops are very tight and leverage a U shaped loop. On all the demonstrations however, it isn't there.
    In order to constantly lift and drop a plow on my ATV using the wench, should I use a small loop with the U shaped tool over and above the sleeve ? Or make the look bigger without the U shape?
    Aside from that, great video. I wasn't doing 2 or 3 swages the last 2 times I did this so I probably was loosing cable strength. Learned a lot from your video. Thanks again.

      @E-rigging  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, Phillipe. Wire Rope Thimbles are a great way to protect cable strands from abrasion or crushing that can occur from constant use. While they're not required, many prefer them in an assembly like yours. Thanks for the comment, and we're glad you like the video!

    Actually The Chicago Flyhouse Inc tested double sleeve 4:33 . turns out it's a waste of time. ADDING SLEEVES DOES NOT INCREASE JOINT STRENGTH. Firstly, in order to be able to perfectly distribute stress force on sleeves you should swage them when wire is under stress(higher than human force) which is unattainable when you work alone and without pulling machines. usually the force distribution is not even 1/10 in most cases(ideal would be 50/50). my guess is that under the stress 1 of the sleeves snaps before dead wire end side starts sliding and then instantly the same force is applied to another sleeve which also gets destroyes (if both sleeves are identical of course) , while in case of standard wire rope clips that does not happen: when 1 clip friction force is less than the load then the dead end wire starts sliding activating other clip friction nad adding it up to ideal 50/50 force distribution, so the joint holds. So the rigidity of the sleeve is its limit. Please, tell me I am wrong.

      Paring metals like stainless and aluminum can make either one corrode. And since you said it will probably never see weather, we suggest changing the stainless wire rope to one that's galvanized. You can shop our 1/16 7x7 galvanized wire rope on our website. Hope this helps!

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  ปีที่แล้ว

      While you may be able to crimp different sizes together, there is no way to tell how much these fittings can hold when it is not holding the designed cable size. These fittings are designed to be crimped with specific cable and tools.

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People have come up with lots of other incorrect ways to smash these fittings with hammers or vises, but those methods may fatigue the aluminum sleeve in a way that will promote cracking and failing. Using any other method than an appropriate tool is not recommended as there is no consistency in their load holding ability or fatigue life.

    I see eRigging has a 5 ton hyd crimper tool stating to use the #10 die, which appears to be a round bite, but I don't need another tool just the dies.
    Everywhere I look I see hexagonal bites for electric lugs. I suppose if there's nothing premade I could try making a few sizes from steel flat bar.

    5:00 According to MS51844 zinc plated copper sleeves should be used on steel cable and tin plated copper or stainless steel sleeves should be used on stainless steel cable (CRES).

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, @catranger01, MS51844 does call for Tin plated copper sleeves when using stainless steel cable because Tin does have a slightly less corrosive reaction than Zinc when in contact with stainless steel. However, stainless steel cable swaged with zinc plated copper sleeves are time tested in both land-based and marine applications worldwide, and do satisfy loading holding and corrosion resistance standards for many typical applications. Strict adherence to coating types outlined in the government standard MS51844 is critical for regulated applications such as airplane manufacturing and military contracts. These fittings shouldn’t be used for overhead lifting applications. It is always recommended to get a qualified person to design and approve your application before using rigging assemblies. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments, Have a great day!

      Do aluminum sleeves have any place in this discussion?
      My application is not critical but I tend to try to do things perfect even when it doesn't matter...
      Thank you!

    How do u know when to add a second sleeve? I imagine adding a second sleeve brings efficiency up to 100 %. Additionally are u suggesting that a single sleeve on 1/8 cable will actually holds 1800 lbs ?

      @michaelgeorge3092 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent video by the way

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adding another sleeve will not reliably add to termination efficiency. The load will be held almost exclusively by 1 of the 2 sleeves, then it will shear and the same load will be held by the other sleeve. Depending on how tensioned the spacing is between the 2 sleeves during assembly, it may shock load the second sleeve causing immediate failure after the first one fails.

    anyone have advice on how to break free the crimp fitting without cutting the cable? Made a mistake and need to only adjust it by about 1-2 inches and dont want to run a new cable (umbrella)

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  ปีที่แล้ว

      unfortunately, once crimped there is no adjusting the cable in the sleeve. You will need to cut the cable, but if you want to use the same cable you can always add a shackle or turnbuckle to take up space.

    Are the special tools absolutely necessary? Or is there other ways to do it, without spending 30 some dollars on a tool that will probably only be used once?

    • @tonyuno4253
      @tonyuno4253 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You can weave the rope together very easily without tools, extra parts, or anything, really
