Not only did she originate the role of Fantine. Her "Ladies Who Lunch" at Sondheim's birthday concert was a master class in tone, diction, poise, and snark. She set the bar decades ago, and few have touched it since.
Great storytelling moment to moment lived, with her heart in every note as well as her technique in place, whilst still sounding profoundly human and sharing Fantine's spiritual reality. Patti is extraordinary, her gifts as a singer and actress are gobsmacking, raw, lived, and not just a parade of effects.
I just love the way she absolutely knows by telling the story and starting off slow and nice that she is leading up to blowing that song out of the water...
That is a half truth. Originals are often hard to overshadow, no matter who they are, but when the original is also as talented as Patti Lupone then it is no longer just a question of having the advantage of being the original. Patti won't be overshadowed because she IS Patti LuPone, BOTH first (original), and foremost. Patti's Dream is incredibly rich and compelling not just first in line.
I had the privilege of watching Ms. Lupone in "Evita" on stage in 1980 in S.F. Hearing her version of "I Dreamed A Dream" from "Les Miz", I am reminded of the dynamism of her acting and the beautiful, soaring melody of her voice. She is one of the very best!
Agree!!🎉 Gratefully, also had seen her 1980 Evita characterization & memories of her singing still so vivid !! Quite an excellent production - well cast.🎆🎆🎆🎆🎆
I have heard this song performed by five or six singers, but no one ever sang it better than the legendary Patti Lupone. IMO. What a talented lady she has always been. Patti is one of the most amazing Broadway stars ever. I love her voice ad her acting.
How funny and well timed is she. I saw her in London in Company in 2019 about 10 times. I just loved it. Always in the same seat, thank you Delfont Mackintosh! Please, after Covid 19 let’s get back to supporting the London Theatre.
Chills chills and more chills. What it must feel like to be doing what you were put here to do ... and to have an entire theatre in the palm of your hand.
I love how she kept her Long Island accent when speaking normally...but then she can belt out a ballad like this using the Queens English when singing! She never forgot her roots!
I love divas...that's the bottom line. I think it's just funny how she's so sweet in interviews, but when you throw her on stage, she's this huge diva. I liked her as Eva Peron the most out of all her roles...
Patti Lupone sings the song how it should be song and i love that u can be alright in the beginning of the song and be crying by the end when Patti Lupone sings it and that's why i'm a Lupone fan.
@@lunal988 She has a long resume of film, theater and TV. She was in the film Driving Miss Daisy, Witness, so many Broadway shows and the TV series Life Goes On.
is there a part that fits her voice more perfectly? After knowing her stellar career, and every groundbreaking roll she's invented, i feel so privileged to have seen her in Company here in the uk several times. She is such a treasure, and I truly hope to see her time and time again to come in many different roles.
Lets go further. Forget ballads, records, etc,.Les Miz is a very complicated story, very heavy and very deep, too deep for most. To pull it off every night for a year as if it were the first night, sheer genius!
When you are nominated for 4 tonys, win two of them, and become the FIRST American EVER to win a Olivier (for THIS role btw) then, and ONLY then can you criticizes the wonderful amazingness that is Patti LuPone
Also, I forgot I saw her with my then 5 year old daughter about 15/20 times in Les Mis, thanks again Cameron Macintosh. We would sit in the restricted view 2/3rd row stalls behind a pillar but knew there were always 2 free seats in the front row, ‘papered seats’ in case anyone of any importance turned up. They never did so we moved to them! I think my daughter became the orchestra mascot! Happy days
Let's compare Susan Boyle to Patti Lu Pone (or Elaine Paige) when she has done at least ten West End or Broadway productions, eight shows a week for months on end. Then, and only then, will the comparison be fair. There are a LOT of charming singers out there who can sing a few ballads for a talent show - but FEW who can maintain the kind of rigor you need to perform a leading role in a major musical.
You go girl! Try hitting EVERY note 7 shows a week, especially in Les Miz where EVERYBODY is singing their hearts out for 2 and a half hours, non-stop. BTW, was just cast as Valjean in local production using Full Philharmonic Orchestra (4 or 5 shows). Sometimes, "Beyond my wildest dreams" come true! My brother was in the OBC. Yep. I'm THAT old!
wow she definitely stood her ground as the original FANTINE there was alot of people who has followed here character like RUTHIE at the DREAM CAST concert then SUSAN who has graced us with her version then there's LEA from the 25th anniversary with her heart wrenching version but all of them did amazing but PATTIE LUPONE 'S original version of the song still gives the character and the song a deeper meaning its like you've been through FANTINE'S shoe in the show thats how i adore her version...
That season she and Peters should have switched roles. Both are so talented and both were so miscast. Peters would have been a phenomenal Reno Sweeney and LuPone has more gravitas to play the witch.
I think this part and when she does Eva Perone are by far her best ones. Both really need a powerful voice to reel in the audience, and it's obviou the's got that down with these two characters
nobody can over shadows the originals.... who ever comes after, they will remain the best and unbeatable. ruthie and LEA shared the glory by topping it,, but the originals will always be as i said the original...
Patti LuPone during an interview of Susan on CBS. RODRIGUEZ: Where does her rendition rate? LUPONE: . . . And then, I mean, I was really -- I started to cry. I thought, I really, she -- Susan is -- has so much courage, and such pluck, really. RODRIGUEZ: How is that for an endorsement, Susan? BOYLE: That will do. (LAUGHTER) Both of them are class acts!
wowzas she is not fond of LesMiz lol of course she's making jokes (but behind every joke...) ...never got to see Lady Lupone in an actual show, but the five concerts I was privileged to be at were utterly incredible...! Thanks Patti for being exactly the kind of amazing star and person you are!!!
OMG AGREED! She deserves the title of DIVA becuz she has earned it compared to little broadway wannabes that think they are divas. Eva Peron was her best role becuz she had such a hard time with the notes to where she couldn't do afternoon shows becuz she was on vocal rest resting up for the show that night.
This woman should be in every single broadway show... not only for her voice, but also for her sense of humor...!!!
That's it. I have reached my peak Patti LuPone obsession and I'll never come down again.
Lizzie Lane same
Lizzie Lane same
im assuming you've seen her killer performance of Being Alive, somewhere on youtube!!!
Steven Ponte yes!! Ugh she’s spectacular 😭😍❤️
Welcome to the club xD
This is the perfect example of what a true diva must be - classy, arrogant, ignorant of other parts, but when she starts to sing she just kills.
*****
yeah that's what i mean. She kinda plays her part as a musical diva. 'cause that's what the audience want, isn't it?
Her voice is theatrical very perfect for the theater.
Talent shines
Yas!
Patti Lupone clearly tells a story wonderfully. I love it when singers talk to the audience during their concerts.
Great performance!
Not only did she originate the role of Fantine. Her "Ladies Who Lunch" at Sondheim's birthday concert was a master class in tone, diction, poise, and snark. She set the bar decades ago, and few have touched it since.
Excellent comment! Thanks! I agree with everything you stated! ❤
only patti lupone can make me hysterically laugh and cry in the same video
what a gift to the world is she.....

Patti is extraordinary, her gifts as a singer and actress are gobsmacking, raw, lived, and not just a parade of effects.
I don't know what I love more, her storytelling or her singing.
I refuse to choose: i'll take both -- her singing AND her storytelling!
I can't get enough of her brilliance and her gorgeous voice.
I just love the way she absolutely knows by telling the story and starting off slow and nice that she is leading up to blowing that song out of the water...
I can't think of a time that I am not mesmerized by her talent. She is a diva for sure but has the talent to pull it off. Bravo!
I saw Miss LuPone with Mandy on tour together........ always grateful.
Oh Gawd, her voice is like melted butter with chocolate. I can not wait to see her in Los Angeles next year.
Next year???

Incredibly smart and funny, incredibly warm and endless talent. I love Patti
She’s so awesome!!! I adore every inch of her. She’s a badass!!! 😍🥰
"It'd been a long time...but in Les Mis nothing is too long"
This is the best version I've heard of this song
You clearly haven't heard ruthie henshall singing it....
How funny and well timed is she. I saw her in London in Company in 2019 about 10 times. I just loved it. Always in the same seat, thank you Delfont Mackintosh! Please, after Covid 19 let’s get back to supporting the London Theatre.
One of the only people who I can listen to for hours on end, such a talented voice and the story shows how human she is
Oh, my God, I love her so much.
She is amazing. And how flattering is that outfit? Again, amazing.
She's priceless! I can't compare any of the ladies who played this! They all sang their own way!
Chills chills and more chills. What it must feel like to be doing what you were put here to do ... and to have an entire theatre in the palm of your hand.
Thank you Patti Lupone. For everything before and this.
one of the best vocalists of the last century. love her
What a consummate performer. She has a sense of humor. She sings this song with such passion and emotion, transferring it to the audience.
Sing it girl. I can't enough of hearing her sing. Simply beautiful
LuPone is wonderful -- her stories make the pieces she's bringing!
GURRRLL ... YOU ARE WONDERFUL! PLEASE COME TO SPOKANE, WASHINGTON!
Gotta love when she imitates Colm lol
I love how she kept her Long Island accent when speaking normally...but then she can belt out a ballad like this using the Queens English when singing!
She never forgot her roots!
WOW... from Le Miz to Evita. Incredible contribution.
I adore Patti Lupone! What a lady! I started to insist on people calling me, "Patti" instead of " Pat" because of her!
Saw her onstage in Evita. New York 1981. And saw her in Les Miz London 1985.
I love divas...that's the bottom line. I think it's just funny how she's so sweet in interviews, but when you throw her on stage, she's this huge diva. I liked her as Eva Peron the most out of all her roles...
Absolute, unapologetic, DIVA. Absolutely fabulous!
She has a voice!! She's my inspiration for a reason!
This is everything ❤ love Patti
Patti Lupone sings the song how it should be song and i love that u can be alright in the beginning of the song and be crying by the end when Patti Lupone sings it and that's why i'm a Lupone fan.
Only know her from “Hollywood” on Netflix a few days ago, great artist!
She's also INCREDIBLE in Penny Dreadful (recent gothic horror TV series) and also in Evita.
@@lunal988 She has a long resume of film, theater and TV. She was in the film Driving Miss Daisy, Witness, so many Broadway shows and the TV series Life Goes On.
Oh gosh the last part got me so bad..... I feel like crying...
Wow, first she makes you laugh and then she starts sining and makes you forget about the funny anecdote, you suddenly feel the chills
She really is something else ❤️
Not gonna cry.. Not gonna cry..
*Patti cries*
😭😭😭
Miss Lupone u r amazing!!! Cant wait to read your memoirs xxx
is there a part that fits her voice more perfectly?

I'm amazed at what a good actress Patti is. Just saw her in PARKER with Statham and J-Lo. Had to come back here to revisit. What a talent.
Lets go further. Forget ballads, records, etc,.Les Miz is a very complicated story, very heavy and very deep, too deep for most. To pull it off every night for a year as if it were the first night, sheer genius!
You don't know me.
No 8 Hugh Jackman laughs
California
Patti was in the original Fantine, the show first opened in 1986.She was much younger then.
Beautiful!
Great stuff..you want.power ..you want nuance...she does it all
A great star never dims - you are the very best
When you are nominated for 4 tonys, win two of them, and become the FIRST American EVER to win a Olivier (for THIS role btw) then, and ONLY then can you criticizes the wonderful amazingness that is Patti LuPone
Say it AGAIN

Her vibrato is insane!!
Look at this queen
Patti is a Legend ❤
Impossible, with her lungs and voice I absolutely do NOT believe it.
GAWD! All her notes are so effortless!
ive never heard of her ! but omg that was one of favourites just amazing :-)
God I love her. I just love everything about her.
this is the strongest performance i saw of this song!!!
She's so funny and good with the audience.
That comment at 0:18 always slays me...classic deadpan.
I love that Patti lets us always see HER

Dianaemanuel let’s not.
Well said and true
Patti Lupone - magnificent now more so than ever.
yeah she's a diva but when she does interviews she's really down to earth and speaks her mind. Patti has done some other good roles.
Tears every time...
Amazingly done! Loved this version!!
She’s magnificent X’s all the tea in Boston Harbor, and all the dreams .. real or imagined.
But come on now.
The emotion at 6:28.
Too good.
Agree. That 6:28 thing gets me everytime.
I never knew she was so funny! What a treat!!!!
I love this woman! She is everything I want to be. Goodness gracious.
this is the same spiel she always gives before this song, same actions and everything. but believe me....i LOVE it!

Fantastic performance.
love her hair!!! and her voice!!! shes so funny
I’d love to see her as The Witch from Into The Woods!
That season she and Peters should have switched roles. Both are so talented and both were so miscast. Peters would have been a phenomenal Reno Sweeney and LuPone has more gravitas to play the witch.
I love her.
She is such a fabulous story teller. Hialrious...
I have seen her 5x..2, shows. 3 concerts. Amazing all
Her impression of Colm Wilkinson is SO FUNNY!
I think this part and when she does Eva Perone are by far her best ones. Both really need a powerful voice to reel in the audience, and it's obviou the's got that down with these two characters
She looks amazing!
nobody can over shadows the originals.... who ever comes after, they will remain the best and unbeatable. ruthie and LEA shared the glory by topping it,, but the originals will always be as i said the original...
Listen to Judy Kuhn
What a complete show business personality she is.
Theatre Dahling!💖🌹
ahhhh! I love her! i got tickets to see her in Indianapolis in april for Coulda Woulda Shoulda!
Love the gown!!!!
Patti LuPone during an interview of Susan on CBS.

. . .

RODRIGUEZ: How is that for an endorsement, Susan?
BOYLE: That will do.
(LAUGHTER)
Both of them are class acts!
Amazing...
That Beyoch can SANG!
Chills.
I have the book; but every time I am at Fuantine's part; I would turn up computer and have Lupone sing it :D
omg, she is magnificent
Patti Lupone is the QUEEN
