    I loved making these types of observations when I originally played these games. One of my most keen was that the lady dancers on Vega (Claw) stage dance left and right. This is ONLY found on SNES and only on World Warrior.

    Notice also in Guile's stage that in the Genesis version the background airbase is lost in a darker fog. The airbase can't be seen.
    In Vegas of SNES WW the girls look well drawn and has a nice animation while the SF2T are based in the original arcade.

    The background omissions likely have more to do with maintaining performance than not bothering to re-draw the sprites, eg. removing two of the six elephants on Dhalsim's stage. The CPS-1 arcade board was considerably more powerful than the 16 bit home consoles.

    • @ReviewUSA-ri5dv
      @ReviewUSA-ri5dv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it was likely more to do with it being only 16Meg, as opposed to the 24Meg of the final version.

      @@ReviewUSA-ri5dv If cost was NOT a factor, do you think it prolly could've been arcade perfect with 48 megs?

    • @greensun1334
      @greensun1334 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume it's because of the lower horizontal resolution on either home system. The CPS arcade original has 384 pixels wide vs the console's 256 pixels (yes, also the Genesis version runs in this resolution mode). There exists a hack for Genesis port with two missing elephants in the middle redrawn (Pyron, I guess), but they don't have an extra parallax scroll layer like in the arcade.

  • @gerv55
    @gerv55 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The snes version is missing some sprites as it's cpu was slower than that of the genesis. It's more obvious on some stages than others.

    • @kamranki
      @kamranki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you think that was the reason for missing sprites? Or maybe the devs just didnt want to put efforts where most people wouldn't notice it?

    I can tell you almost every difference between CPS1 and the Genesis & SNES ports (that weren't covered here):
    Japan(Ryu)=Genesis&SNES sky doesn't scroll, while it does in CPS1
    Japan(E Honda)=some objects to the left side of the tub are different in the ports, and water doesn't crest back and forth over the edge of the tub in the ports
    Brazil=sky doesn't scroll in Genesis, and for CE/Turbo, sky is sunset in CPS1, while still midday in ports
    USA(Guile)=all differences noted
    USA(Ken)=in world warrior, there are objects missing (specifically boxes) from the right side of the screen in SNES
    China=sprites for bicyclists were made bigger in CE/Turbo for CPS1, but not SNES, Genesis mucks up the colors
    USSR=this video didn't mention that the old man is missing in Genesis&SNES
    India=there are 6 elephants in CPS1, only 4 in Genesis/SNES
    USA(Balrog)=differences noted
    Spain=guitar players are missing in Genesis&SNES, the brick walls are missing from SNES, and the 2 flamenca dancers dresses are different colors from CPS1 in CE/Turbo
    Thailand(Sagat)=the palm tree in world warrior is missing in SNES version
    Thailand(M Bison)=some background characters are missing in Genesis&SNES

    @ravagingwolverine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love comparisons like this. I've compared the versions too. I like the Genesis/Mega Drive version most. It certainly is not perfect. SNES version has some music I just don't like. Sega version has the most background elements retained. I assume it's an issue of cart space and data size. The Sega versions have larger carts, but don't need all the music samples the SNES one needs. I suspect they cut out some unique background tiles to help save cart space.

    • @greensun1334
      @greensun1334 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both have missing details. Look at the moving clouds in Blanka's background or the scrolling Ryu's castle for example, in the SNES version both have extra scroll layers while in the Genesis version it's static. I like both versions, but the SNES has better SFX/samples (it's scratchy on Genesis). The music is a matter of flavour, on Genesis it sounds more harsh like the CPS original, while the SNES has more melodic sounding tracks. Like I said, both are great ports!

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greensun1334 That's fair. They both have cutbacks, for sure. The examples you gave take advantage of the extra scroll layer of the SNES. However, as background details go, I put more weight on the extra elements like the extra people in Guile's stage. Of course, none of those things affect gameplay. I'm not sure if that comes down to saving cart space or VRAM on SNES. Even back in 1993, the scratchy voices on the Genesis didn't bother me, but clearly they bother other people. The SNES voices are muffled which I always noticed. The PC Engine version has the best voices, and I have no complaint about it not having multiple sample overlap, which is actually accurate to the arcade. As for music, it is subjective. I love the original FM sound of the arcade. I prefer the overall sound of the music of the Genesis version. Some of the music on the SNES is excellent, though some of it strays too far from the arcade for my taste. But the biggest thing for me is I just can't stand the SNES version of Ken's music. I don't know what they were thinking when they rearranged that. And that is a complaint I have seen made by others, so it's not a unique issue on my part. But I agree with your final point, all of them, even the PC Engine version, are great ports in their own way.

    It says a lot about the design compromises of those old consoles. Sega went with high speed rendering and thus more animation frames. Nintendo went with an incressed colour pallet and so each individual frame was better drawn. It's hard to say who was right, guess it would have to be decided on a game by game basses.

    • @kamranki
      @kamranki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      More animation frames were present on some characters but only on the BETA version of Genesis. Final releases of both games feature exact identical animation frames for all characters. A quick look at sprite sheets will tel you that. I am pretty sure both systems could have handled more animation frames if Capcom had desired so.

    'Converted for 16-bits' I might be wrong, but wasn't the CPS1 (The arcade system board SF2 ran under) a 16-Bit system? Probably would have been better to have just said '16-bit Home consoles' as it really was the system resolutions and storage space that required the downgrade and redrawing of assets.
    That said, this really is interesting comparison! I think on the whole the SNES version looks the best, especially color-wise, but I think the Genesis version would play the best, wider resolution and six-button pad and all. (I've never played the Genesis version, and the SNES version only briefly)

    • @greensun1334
      @greensun1334 ปีที่แล้ว

      All three 16bit ports run in the same resolution mode of 256x224. Indeed, the CPS1 system is 16bit, but with a higher horizontal resolution (224x384), more colors in screen and a faster CPU.

    Snes had far better graphics and sound capabilities than Megadrive : it could display 256 colors out of 32768 whereas the MD could only display 64 colors to chose from 512. Hence the obvious visual differences in games that were on both platforms (just take a look at Mr. Nutz).
    As for the sound while the Snes did not reach cd quality it tended to close the gap and produced more realistic sounds for the instruments and voices. Now having 8-bit sounds has its charm too.

    I've always said that despite the SEGA version getting pounded mercilessly by nintendo fanboy sites and youtubers it pulls ahead in being more like the arcade original. OK fair enough the NInty had better sound chips and more colours but it felt... lacking compared to the SEGA version. No stage shows the difference more than Ryu's stage. The Ninty didn't have that little intro. The SEGA one did. All it needed was the correct walking animations on the sprites or the music change at an imminent KO and it would have been almost perfect.

They could've put a white guy like they did on the Sega, but I think at tiumes even back then, Capcom were lazy bastards and just scrapped the intro. Of course that intro is also not in the Japanese SFC version, and it was an early SNES release (remember how bad Final Fight was, and it near a launch title), so maybe Capcom weren't comfortable with the SFC/SNES hardware at that time.
      Another example is Power Instinct. Power Instinct on the Mega Drive had the arcade intro, but the SNES/SFC version didn't, but the sound was atrocious on the MD version, while the SFC/SNES version had better overall sound. Not to mention the MD and western SNES releases lacked the arcade endings for each character, but the SFC version actually retained everyone's endings.

      This is the whole problem with people watching TH-cam videos and then judging things as if they have played the game. The Mega Drive version plays great but you aren’t going to see that here. Same goes for Mortal Kombat

    What's sad is, all the comments about Genesis. A system 2 full years older than the snes. A system that was originally going to be the PlayStation before Nintendo fucked up. Yes a system that comes out AFTER a system SHOULD be more advanced. Stfu already! It still competed! And it beat like 2 or 3 other systems!

    The color changes were due to color palette changes to work on home consoles. The Arcade could display 520 colors at the same time...snes was 312, and Genesis was 64 but 128 with fancy program trickery.

      Sega Genesis has a better processor hence games with more action with little to no slowdown. Snes has a shit processor hence you don't see crazy action games on there and the ones that are there have slowdown.

      LAWL ! Just for information, the japanese coders hated the SNES. They prefered the Genesis, but since Nintendo was paying good the studios, they had to code on it ! In SF2 SNES you of course have animations removed, this is due to the weak processor, too slow to have all of them. On the opposite, the Genesis has a better and faster processor, and the VDP of the Genesis, is very flexible and can do lots of things. The only difference stands in the amount of colors the one and the other can display. The SNES can have more colors.

    • @kamranki
      @kamranki 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SNES could of course display more colors on-screen hence the reason for games often looking better. Also allowed for some really cool transparency effects like fog and smog.
