  • Invasive species are something that should be taken very seriously. Even invasive species from the same planet, given different circumstances can lead to the eradication. In the events of Pitch Black, this is exactly what I believed. Given this creatures evolutionary biology, it appears that they always resided there. But what exactly are these things? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

    Riddick says "Not for me." Because the captain lady said that she'd die for her crew. He's basically saying that she shouldn't have died for his sake because he was a hardened criminal that didn't deserve to be saved at the expense of a good person.

      Riddick is, as we all can agree, a very cynical and pragmatic individual. That why it hurt him, when she was at her worst... she saved his life. When she had every reason not to. She still did it. He BELIVES she was stupid for doing so, he wouldn't have, but he knows she did it because she was, at her worst, a good person. And he hated that about her dying. Good people shouldn't die. She was the wrong person to die. And he... was thankful. And the only way to repay the favor was by justifying her action in saving his life by getting off that damn planet.
      And that means Riddick HAD to care. And that made him angry.

    Fun bit, Claudia Black (Jackie / the miner) was filming on Farscape at the same time. Both productions shared her.
    When Farscape would stop shooting, Claudia (in Farscape costume) was driven to the airport, loaded on a plane, and flown to where Pitch Black was being filmed.
    She would learn her lines and sleep on the flight. On set, she would shoot her scenes, be loaded back on the plane heading for the Farscape team (wearing her Pitch Black costume), learn her lines for Farscape on the way and sleep.
    Each set would clean the other's costume so it could be worn by her and she said half the time she had no idea where she was.

    There is a very similar thing with the black bass when it is introduced in rivers with no predators. The black bass eats at all levels: the adults eat large prey, the juveniles eat medium prey, down to te the newborn fishes eating insect-sized prey. TL:DR; they eat EVERY species of the area. There are lakes in Spain, where it was criminally introduced by individuals who wantd to fish it, where every insect, fish, frog, whatever that enters the lake from upstream is instantly eaten and the _only_ animal life left is black bass of different sizes, eating each other. _Exactly_ like in Pitch Black.

    Riddick is a monster, but his demeanor in this and later films show that, deep down, he wants to be a good guy. His life only took him down bad paths, so he never had the chance to grow in a positive way. When he tried to escape on his own (which he probably assumed any of them would do) only to get confronted by the pilot, he believed that she would do the same. Even after it becoming known that she was willing to dump the passengers to save the ship, the pilot refused and demanded that Riddick save every one.
    That seems to have struck a chord in him, and he willingly goes back to save the others. So when he gets wounded, and believes he should be left behind, the pilot comes to save him. Only this time, she dies in the process, horrifying him. He was appalled that someone so "good" died trying to save someone so beyond redemption like him. "She can't have died for me! Not for me!"
    It's an amazing line that shows what Riddick is deep down, and his growth through the movie.

    • @tdylan
      @tdylan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      @@DaRkLoRdZoRc I think the problem is that this movie was made with Riddick being one type of character but then Vin Diesel got full of himself and decided to use the character as a vessel to fulfill his lifelong Dungeons & Dragons fantasies. In Pitch Black Riddick was a human whose mother abandoned him as a newborn i.e. found in a dumpster with his umbilical cord still around his neck. That bad start led to him making bad choices/being a bad person. e.g. When Johns is trying to convince Riddick to kill the girl and drag her body behind the sled Johns said something to the effect of:
      "in war time medical doctors decided who lived and died. It's called "triage."
      Riddick replied "when I did it they kept calling it 'murder." Implying he had killed multiple people. There was ambiguity to the character but a part of what made his redemption arc work is that he probably really was a bad person. Again, he absolutely was going to leave them on the planet to die. Johns also told Fry Riddick knows how to fly a ship by sharing that Riddick cut the throat of the pilot of a ship that was taking him back to prison. Something we don't have to assume was done in self defense. Riddick will kill people and he will leave them to die. That's why it was so good when at the end of the movie he said "Riddick is dead. He died somewhere back on that planet." He no longer wanted to be Riddick because he knows Riddick is bad.
      Then Vin Diesel got the rights to the character and decided "Actually, it wasn't Riddick's mother that abandoned him. It was this Necro king guy that wanted to wipe out all of Riddick's race because Riddick is of a race of ultimate bad asses that are the only ones that can stop him. He killed every member of riddick's race by strangling them with their umbilical cords. The subsequent movies and mythos was all about jerking off Vin Diesel's ego.

  • @DanakarEndeel
    @DanakarEndeel หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Yeah, the "surgical shine job for 20 menthol cool" was just Riddick messing with 'Jack'. Afaik he developed that nightvision effect naturally and suddenly due to being an Furyan Alpha. He just made up the story that he gave a doctor in prison a pack of menthol cigarettes for 'shining' his eyes. Also because he couldn't explain why his eyes suddenly received innate nightvision (as he was just a baby on Furya back when a Necromonger commander razed his planet to the ground).
    If you play the first Riddick videogame, it provides more insight in how Riddick developed the ability very suddenly at some point after meeting the preacher.

Basically after the slam surgeon patched him up he was able to see in the dark, and started hearing voices in his head. As a result he was afraid he was going mad. This theory is from ages ago, but my friends and I kicked around the idea that the invasive species was sent there for study due to the ‘forever day’ of the world it would be easy for the researchers to simply head upwards of the population got too aggressive, but they hadn’t taken into account the eclipse and got themselves and their families eaten because they under underestimated their research subjects.

      IIRC there's a (very brief) explanation in Pitch Black that the settlement they find belonged to terraformers or something along those lines. Been years since I watched PB but I do specifically remember them commenting on the ruins they come across, and it's never in any way implied that the bioraptors were transplanted onto the planet from elsewhere. Furthermore, the bioraptors never show up in any of the subsequent CoR movies.

    • @Palemagpie
      @Palemagpie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohh that actually tracks with the bones of native fauna.
      After all if they'd naturally evolved on that planet chances are the environment wouldn't be so barren. Unsustainable populations self regulate.
      But an invasive species could and would nom all available meat sources.
      A real world example would be rats on small Carribbean islands during the age of sail.
      Many sailors found small tropical paradises. Only to return on later trips to find them completely barren.
      On a larger scale. This would also explain their unsustainable numbers if the planet had originally been incredibly lush with flora and fauna but the bioraptors disrupted the ecosystem. Leading to it's quick but near total decimation.
      Could also explain it still having an oxygen rich atmosphere with no visible plant or vegetation if it had had those things. But with them long dead, and the bioraptors propensity to tunnel and burrow destroying the root systems and causing desertification.
      Maybe the planet has a now non-renewable level of oxygen in the atmosphere.
      It all totally tracks as a hypothetical.

    She was not supposed to die for his sake. Riddick is a good person as clearly shown by him returning to save everyone, based off of her words. Her death temporarily broke him because when the going got tough, she showed herself to also be a good person.... unlike Yellowstone.

      I'd read that a bit differently - expressing the dynamics in simple terms like 'good' and 'evil' doesn't seem right here.
      Fry initially didn't want to die for the passengers during the landing but then came around to see them as people, not just cargo - and was willing to sacrifice herself to save them.
      Riddick found that 'interesting' - the will to sacrifice your life for another. But he did not consider himself worthy of that kind of sacrifice - not sure if he considered himself 'evil', but definitely he felt he was indebted to Fry after she sacrificed herself for him.
      We know that Riddick would leave people like that in the past, so why act different now?
      The only thing that comes to mind is respect for Fry's sacrifice, the feeling of being indebted, the moral obligation to pay the debt by completing what she was unable to because she sacrificed herself for him - the only way to achieve this would be to save the remaining passengers that she no longer could.
      Does that make him and overally 'good' person? Not necessarily. It feels more like a matter of personal code or honor that's more important than self-preservation in this particular case.

    • @grantpflum6844
      @grantpflum6844 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Well said. Though it has less to do with being good and more to do with being honorable. Riddick was respecting how she changed, was willing to die for her duty despite initially being willing to kill them to save herself. Riddick is a cynic. Pitch Black was such an amazing introduction for the Riddick character. He was a wildcard that kept you guessing right until the very end. You spent the whole movie waiting for him to screw everyone over, and it wasn't until years after the first watch that I realized he spent the whole movie waiting for them to screw him over. It's a way better movie than people give it credit for.
    Also, the "Not for me" line was because Riddick explicitly asked Fry before if she would die for THEM. He doesn't even see himself as a person, so he never expects anyone else to. No one would ever come back for him. Then she did, and got got for it. She was one of the very few genuinely good people Riddick had ever met, and she died helping someone who didn't deserve it. Again, the movie is better than it has any right to be.

    Riddick's "Not for me" statement was pretty simple to understand if you watched the whole movie and paid any attention....It has a lot to do with Captain Fry's whole character arc.
    In the beginning of the movie, during the crash sequence, Fry was releasing the rear compartments of the ship in order to try regaining control. When she got to passenger compartments she said: "I'm not dying for them", showing she was willing to purge anything, or anyone, if it helped her regain control, and survive.
    In another scene later on, Riddick tries to tempt Fry onto the escape ship, abandoning the last 2 passengers. Fry fights him, but Riddick inevitably comes out on top; literally. He asks her: "You'd die for them?" She eventually says," Goddamn it, Riddick. Yes, I would die for them. " Riddick takes his shades off and studies her for a moment, sees her determination, and simply says: "Interesting".
    In a scene a little bit later on Fry approaches an injured Riddick after he had gone off into the dark fighting multiple raptors. She grabs him and starts dragging him towards the ship and to try to encourage him says: C'mon Riddick, said I'd die for them. Not for you. Its only a few moments later when everything slows down and the audience hears a flesh slashing sound. The scene slows as both Fry and Riddick study each other and the audience tries to figure out who was just mortally wounded. A moment later Fry is snatched off into the night. Riddick, showing a moment of humanity says, in rage and horror: "Not for me!"
    He imploring Fry, or fate, maybe even god that it wasn't supposed to be this way as she wasn't supposed to die for him.

But if your vehicle is constructed in space and weight is not that big of an issue anymore, you would definitly add armor plating for such a vehicle if you don't have energy shields or something like that.

      Furyans aren't a different species. There is actually a pretty cool bit of lore on this, where early humanity in that universe realized that they would need to adapt to life off earth and so they developed some tech (probably bioengineering) to adapt humans to hostile environments. This created 4 "elder races" including the Furyans and Necromongers who were adapted to very hostile non-human environments (with Furya being the most extreme). They learned terraforming, so this practice stopped, and they started adapting planets to baseline humans rather than creating superhumans who could adapt to hostile environments.

    Also, the franchise has 2 live-action sequels (with a third in production) and an anime-esque direct sequel. There are also a few games that serve as prequels.
