  • What is that precipitation crust in my saltwater storage bin? It's a common question among many reefers who store mixed saltwater, but do all salt mixes create precipitate-precipitation? Today on #BRStvInvestigates we find out!

    I’ve watched pretty much all your videos over the last 12 months, and feel like I’m at an unfair advantage because I haven’t set up my first saltwater tank yet

    Randy - I think a good test would have been to stir it up with the normal salt water mix and get a ICP-OES and NDOC test on it. To see if it alters the chemistry.

    U had me at pharmacudical, tried many of those salts, Hw reefer hard to mix, bright Wells was easy but had to mix for 24 hours, u should have tried Aquaforest reefer salt , really good also, I used the accru-Sea, great parameters, but only 4.5 gallons a package.?, also had stuff that never dissolved, tried four boxes before switching to tropic Marin pro, great great stuff!!

    Great test!
    You did miss one opportunity though. Before and after stage 3, you could have weighed each sediment cartridge in grams to get the weight of percipient and then divided it by weight of salt required to achieve 35 ppt. As far as moisture content is concerned, you bake the cartridge in an oven at 180F for 24 hours...hot enough to evaporate all the water out but cool enough to not combust anything.
    Finally, I wish you have included AquaForest Reef Salt

    I normally add a bit of artificial vinegar to the water before mixing. That prevents precipitation of the calcium.

    Could someone explain to me why they would use the Red Sea salts over the others? It doesn't seem to fair very well in any of the testing.

    Personally I only store RODI water
    I fill my bin over night to get the water to temperature and mix the salt the next morning to use that day
    Personally I find that the best method

      Same here. I always store any where from 15-25 gallons of rodi water at all times and when I need to make saltwater I just pump into my saltwater side and throw my heater thermometer and a maxijet in then come back and put my salt in when I get to 77/78 degrees. After my water change I always whip down the inside of my brute can completely dry so I’m ready for the next time. Zero problem with this. I use IO reef crystals.

    • @bradleyrhodes2820
      @bradleyrhodes2820 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I leave saltwater in my brute can with my pumps running at all time that’s when I get the brown build up over time. Noticed if I only turn on my pump( either my maxijet or my panworld 40px pump) for just a short period of time just to get the water moving once a day or so I don’t get that brown build up.

    Is there a video in the works to icp test the different salt mixes to show the levels they mix up to at 1.026 or 35ppt?

  • @cyclonecustom

    This is one of your best videos yet Randy. The testing using the eye chart and poker chips was a clever way to measure a difficult thing to measure. I was surprised that the Red Sea Blue didn't do better. I think I will be changing salt to the TMpro,. Where did you get those water tanks you used for the testing? I have one like it for my RO water. I'd like to buy another!

    very insightful 👍🏾... so if your planning to store saltwater go with synthetic salt unless your a mix it & use it type of ReefKeeper. I also only store RO/DI water. I only wish there were more salt brands included with this 1st round of analysis perhaps the 2nd will in the future?

    Right or wrong...I just don't see how using IO or Red Sea would even be an option for me at this point. I will stick with ESV from now on.

    I know this video is more pointed in the direction of people that do Auto water changes. I usually only store rodi water for ATO and to mix salt quickly to do a water change as needed.

    Would it be best to let the precipitation occur before using water mix? I mix red sea pro and keep a power head running in a 20 gal long on patio,and water is crystal clear...

  • @UnfilteredJustice
    @UnfilteredJustice 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use my salt right away (15-20 mins). IO I get stuff floating on the top and scoop it out. Blue Bucket I get a brown sand on the bottom. No idea what that is.

    I have a 100g poly container with a wide base and a rather small top, no way I'm cleaning that out with a scrub brush. That said, I just mixed up a 200G tank with Red Sea blue bucket and didn't have any precipitation on the bottom (completely empty tank) maybe it takes more time?

    So is it safe to do a water change with mixed saltwater that has some white buildup in the brute bin?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't be an issue at all. You may just want to check calcium and alkalinity to make sure that they haven't dropped due to precipitation.

    my friend sell a IO salt form 2014 production, it is ok to using it?

  • @Meldium
    @Meldium 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    May this be the main reason why when you have Cyano/Dino or battling with some sort of algae in the reef tank, that doing Water Changes "actually makes it worse" rather than fixing the problem? May this also be the reason why Filter Socks, Filter Pads or Roller Mats looks brownish even more frequently? (Other than food particulates)
    You may be into something else here BRStv. Very Interesting indeed.

  • @daycm1977

    What temperature was the water when the salt was added?

    • @daycm1977
      @daycm1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BRStv you may want to retest at 78 degrees. I've found red sea pro doesn't precipitate when the water is above 78 degrees. I used to have brown scaling in my mixing container then increased the temperature and found that I had result like tropic marine pro.

    Do all the testing on each newly prepared salt. Verify the component results. Recheck all the tests in 1 month, 2 months and 3 months. What component decreases and at what rate gives you what is being precipitated out. Just looking at crust build up and haziness won’t give the info most of us seek.
