    Interesting info! As someone who's taken several statistics at the PhD level, I like how you guys actually plan out the experiments in a logical manner with CLEAR and SIMPLE questions that are TESTABLE (even statistically testable, if you wanted to), and are careful about not making inferences about the results outside of the context of the experiment (thought the time points should be represented as equally spaced). Obviously would be great to have tried different lots of each brand but that's expensive and uses a lot of materials.

    Thx for all of your videos( I think)!? Ever since I started watching, my life has changed. You can’t see the bottom of my pool because of the great algae growth in it. I have not mowed my lawn and have pile of letters from the HOA. My wife doesn’t even bother me to fix anything on the house any more, as a matter of fact, I haven’t seen her in nearly 2 weeks. I don’t know if that is because I stare in to my aquarium for hours on end, or she has moved out. I guess since I don’t have any money to go to dinner and a movie now or even want to. Yep I just looked, her closet is empty. The time I save now not having to wash her car, I can now spend making water changes. I am certain I will get fired if I leave early one more time from work because I have to see the new shipment of corals before anyone else can see them fresh out of the box. But, I have that covered, I already gave them my application to work there. Of course I will have to downsize my house and truck but get a bigger aquarium. I am hooked Thanks again. Lol
    P.S. if anyone has pictures of my wife please send to me, the corals I know have erased my memory.
    And baby if you happen to read this. I am just joking, I am not downsizing my truck

    Am I understanding this correctly, to do an auto water change unit, with a months worth of water, and daily water changes, I don’t have to heat it (I already believe this to be true, but I don’t have to keep mixing it beyond the first few hours? So initially mix it and let it sit stagnate while being used or do I keep mixing it all month? It sounds like mix and let sit?

  • @karennation3580
    @karennation3580 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow, I realize i have been possibly doing alot of things wrong. I have only stoped heating the ro water since summer since I live in florida but I just pour it straight in without testing the temp and red sea says mix at 65 degress which sounds insane to me! But does make me wonder if the water is much cooler than I though but doubtful since it is stored in a hot garage. Some of it is premixed or I have one ro container I leave in house so since I keep indoor temp about 78 it should be good. By the touch it feels good and occasionally I have checked the thermometer in tank. I use reef crystals by IO since its by far the cheapest but had no idea its so elevated. I knew it said elevated but I thought that was that the other mix was maybe fish only but 500 is pretty high. Could this be dangerous for my tank and corals? Wondering if I should switch. I dont dose and change water weeky and dont check calcium that often(but will now) seems its usually 440 or something and dkh is usually 9 .3 or 4. Should I keep the alk at exactly the same level, is it okay to vary a few points as long as its in the 9"s? Kind of new at this game!

    I have been using HW Marinemix for 4 month now since the new system received water. I tested alk, Cal and mag for the first time last week as I'm planning on trying some test corals soon. I was shocked to see alk was at 6dkh when my target was 9. I tested my saltwater mixing container and it tested at 6dkh. I dumped the water and started a new batch. It was spot on at 9dkh. I'm going to test every other day to find the drop off point. However I do believe HW Marinemix is dropping at some point. I have also found other threads confirming the same. I do use a strong power head and heater. Question if I had 10 gallons left of sw and added 30 gal of fresh water to the 10, then added salt could this be affecting the dkh and Cal? Cal was also low by 50ppm. 450 is what I should be getting but redsea found it at 400.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't done any testing in temps quite that cool, but we have no issues storing TM Pro Reef water at room temp (about 70 degrees). I doubt you'll see much, if any, precipitation at slightly lower temps though. Of course, if you wanted to know for sure, I would test alkalinity after it's fully mixed, then again after the saltwater is allowed to hit the 50's and 60's. If you get a drop, it's pretty safe to assume that there is some calcium/alkalinity precipitation going on.

    Once Coral Pro is added to a tank with high water movement and at 78 degrees F, will it start to precipitate in the tank just as it would in a storage container with a powerhead and heater? It seems like it would since the two factors which seem to cause precipitation, water movement and heat, exist in the display tank.

    So I wonder if the RS Coral Pro precipitates CA and alkalinity when heated to 77 degrees after 4-48 hours what happens to it once dumped into your tank? It's right at 77 degrees and a heck of a lot longer than 48hrs .

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on further testing as a part of this series, it seems like as long as you have constant heat and water circulation, precipitation can be avoided with the Red Sea salts.

      @@BRStv Thanks, appreciate your response. I'm pouring over these vids again since I'm thinking of switching salts to get a higher alkalinity. I've been using TM Pro for the past 9months since tank setup but the 7 dKh is lower than I want. The TM Classic may be my sweet spot. RS blue bucket seems to have too much of a mixing ritual.

      The easiest way to check is to test your calcium and alkalinity. If they're at normal levels for your salt mix, then you should be good to go.

      There isn't really a shelf life on salt mix as long as it's not all clumped up from moisture getting into the box or bucket.

    Okay if you're storing RO water for your top off and you're using say a 5 gallon bucket and it takes 2 weeks for you to run out is there anything you need to do to keep your RO water from building up phosphate or algae that might go into your main tank?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're storing fresh RO water (no salt), then we've found that storing without heat or circulation is just fine. We store about 100 gallons of freshwater this way at any given time.

    Its my understanding that additives in the salt mixes help with solubilization, this may explain the increase in dKH for some mixes. No problems here storing normal Ca/alk salt mixes for weeks :)

  • @adilmak4874

    For red sea blue bucket, 3 weeks looks stable - what do you think about 8 weeks? (I'm creating an ultra low maintenance tank with AWC so interested)

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We found the most stable storage from salts like Tropic Marin Pro and ESV B-Ionic salts, with little to know "crud" in the tank. Both Red Sea salts we tested did leave a precipitate crust during long term storage, meaning you will likely need to clean your salt storage bins more frequently than other salts.

    • @MrGarciaJr
      @MrGarciaJr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BRStv just made the switch to the blue bucket because of the low alkalinity in tropic Marin pro. I never even had the storage drop off in mind and on top of it leaves crud. Oh no. I guess I'll have to mix up salt weekly now.

    Wait... Uncirulated? Always heard to keep a wavemaker in the water if its mixed and I know that uncirulated saltwater gets slimy or at least the wavemaker and cords and the sides of the storage bin got slimy when my wavemaker came unplugged for a few days and had to throw it out, defietly afraid to use it if everything it touched was slimy! Are you saying we are not supposed to keep a wavemaker or sometype of circulation like pump or something in there?

    • @nekproductions3271
      @nekproductions3271 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BRStv Did you do a longer test - like weeks/months? I think you might be analyzing your data a bit incorrectly. Its true that for example the alkalinity is +- 0.5 DKH - but if this was truly 'random' variation due to testing - you would see a bumpy graph consistently ( like you do in some brands), as compared to some of the salts that have a constant rise or drop on the parameters. Likewise, there should be no salts that are 'flat'. One other thing - is that the way you change units on the graph (going from minutes - hours - weeks) without spreading out the time in the right proportion - it makes the graph potentially suggest something thats not 'real'. Thanks for the video btw - In general it does suggest there is little difference over time. If might also be interesting to know whether salt in a large tank (like 60 gallons) - is different than a smaller tank.

    Another variable in the equation is concentration of CO2 in the air and the gas exchange between air and water. I have experienced more extreme alkalinity reduction over time using both red sea coral pro and red sea blue bucket when stored at warmer temperatures without constant mixing.

    Again. For the millionth time. I've learned something new every day. Ive been using reef crystals for over a decade (was recommended by a fellow reefer from day one tank build). I never even once considered that salts could be so different and I've never tested a fresh batch of water other than TDS and salinity (i just trusted it i guess). My tank is and always has had awesome mag and alk reading needing little to no dosing whatsoever. Calcium however is regularly well over 500 in my tank though. Now I know that its due to it being 500 right off the bat (WHYYYYY WOULD ANYONE WANT THAT? lol) and my addition of kakl to keep the ph at 8.2 ish is whats causing it to be so high. Not to hijack the post but 1) is 525 simply too high for calcium in a mixed reef with some sps (the coral seem to be doing fin but could obv be better)? and 2) how hard is it to change salt brands without screwing up the tank?

      Not angry, just think it's kinda ridiculous for someone to be upset that BRS didn't test a product they don't even carry. BRS only sells products they feel will benefit their customers so there's probably a reason they don't carry Fritz. Some people have had success with Fritz, but many have also had problems. My previous comment was mostly directed at the other guy, not so much you.
