After an epic few months hanging out in New Zealand it was time to Go! There was a definite chill in the air. The bilges were full of provisions and we were finally ready.
Leaving port and going offshore is a decision we don't take lightly. One that includes pouring over weather forecasts in the weeks preceding our departure. Analyzing wave heights, swell period, wind and gust maps. Planning for alternate routes and ports. There's a lot that goes into it. A lot of practice. Perhaps we were a bit out of practice having summered in New Zealand?
The passage from New Zealand to Fiji is one that includes a point of no return. A point where the only thing you can do is turn more downwind. And that is what we did. Our initial course had us stopping over in a place called Minerva Reef. After three days of bashing into waves with no end in sight and sailing angles that were getting tighter and tighter we pulled the trigger to skip beautiful Minerva reef. So hopefully this video gives you an idea of how wet and wild it can get out here. Yes, it's not super comfy but it can still be fun in it's own wierd, quirky way. Not to mention, it makes that first beer in that calm anchorage even sweeter!
Woot! we're back in the tropics!!!

Great story guys! We had an epic trip down the coast from the bay of Islands to Whangarei. 3-4m plus swells on the beam all the way, then hit 11.3 knots going down one into the harbour entrance. One gnarly trip! 13 hours of that was bad enough! Hope you get that hatch sorted soon.
    Cheers.

One of the most frustrating things watching many blogger sailing channels like yours and interestingly enough, usually all catamarans; is the remarkable absence of any discussion or comment on the vessel's sail plan during such rough weather crossings as this post portrays. How many reefs are in the main? is the main even up? are you simply running on a furled headsail? are you running directly downwind or angled? if the main isn't up, are you running a preventer or tying the boom down to stop the swinging? would trailing a small drogue have made the passage easier? As experienced large monohull sailers who have sailed the Pacific, South East Asia, PNG, South China Sea as well as circumnavigated Australia, we have only recently moved to the dark side and purchased a catamaran and do you think we can find such information? Lots of selfies and sunsets but rarely any informative discussion on rough weather passage making and what is actually happening to the vessel. Perhaps, we're missing the point and such channels are directed toward the armchair viewers rather than practitioners seeking to expand their sail handling skills. Just a thought...Fair winds.

Yikes, I was hurling chunks just watching this video. What a ride, eh? As DH said below, you really captured the lumpy (aka chunky) sea conditions on film. My vestibular system was red lined for sure. An audio / visual feast and cinematic tour de force. I know you'll enjoy Fiji as the people are *incredibly* nice, the weather is sublime, the water is warm, and the visibility is epic (I've been hearing that word so much this past year that I figured it was about time to use it). If time permits, check out Savusavu and the islands in the Koro Sea. Looking forward to your next adventure!

What type of self steering are you using? I want to sail the pacific (after I learn to sail) and have decided on a catamaran. However, I've read that the on board auto steering doesn't do well in rough weather. A "hydrovane" is recommended. On a cat though I am unsure where it would go. Monohulls have it on the back center. Perhaps the self steering you are using eliminates the need for a hydrovane.

If you can't see the horizon, try using a clear water bottle or glass half full of water.

Could be hard to "anchor" the bottle or glass down though ;)

I feel bad for you! So Sorry. I hope you get your sea legs one of these days... What a bummer.

Believe me this couple has strong sea legs.. This passage is just one of the toughest anywhere. Even the most seasoned sailor can get sick on this type of passage. The sea state is hard to capture on camera.
