Flashlights are a really good defense measure actually. A strobe in someone's face really fucks them up at night. I think you'd want something to follow that up after though, and I think it'd be nuts to go around the world with no actual gun. I wonder if they have one or two but don't show them for opsec though. A few items worth keeping for alternative use purposes: 1. Starter Fluid - comes in a spray can, works better than mace, and customs doesn't usually think twice about it. 2. A very obnoxious can of fluorescent spray paint - hot pink is great. Also works better than mace, makes a criminal easy to identify, and customs doesn't usually pay any attention to it. 3. A Bowling Pin - easier to swing than a baseball bat in cramped spaces, equally effective. Usually decorative and doesn't arouse suspicions. 4. A spear gun - though meant for underwater use, they can be used out of water, and don't typically draw too much attention from customs as they are commonly used for spear-fishing. It's a one-shot, and not terribly accurate out of water, but if it's you or them, you always choose you.
Without a gun you're just shinning a target for them to attack with their possible gun if it is a pirate. Most people hold a light straight in front of them. All around very bad places to get shot. Lol. Just aim at the light and fire. You end up a sitting duck if you think about it.

Most of us see it fit to be able to defend ourselves from them. Also, in the United States, unlike Europe, many of us live in more secluded areas prone to animal attacks from bears, coyotes, etc and also want to be able to defend our families from such cases.
Grates and bars: be careful for blocking fire exits. Have one from sleeping areas. Flare guns. Generally legal. Not fun to get shot with and has other good uses. You can always follow up with a fire extinguisher.

At one of his stops along the way, a knowing soul gave him a bag of nails. If I recall correctly, they were short nails with large heads. Much like roofing nails. Most US states have laws against brandishing weapons, I suspect that is true most places. Waving guns is almost the biggest cliche of a dangerous idiot. If you need to warn somebody off, verbal commands, loud noises and bright lights are the way to go. Act and explain your actions based on the safe operation of your vessel. “I observed a vessel approaching on a collision course and sounded a horn, fired flares and illuminated them with a light to warn them.” Any admiralty court is going to agree that hat that was proper. If that doesn’t work, it demonstrates your good faith when you act to defend yourself. If they then attempt to force boarding … 5) Who are you going to call? Help may be days away or corrupt/dangerous. But if you can’t explain it, don’t do it 6) Have a plan, drill the plan, act without hesitation. 7) Stay out of prison

There's some ridiculously bright flashlights by Emalent, Nitecore, Fenix, etc. Some are over 75k lumens. I have an Acebeam laser flashlight that is a weapon, also.
A flir camera will do but yes you will be asleep but its better then nothing.. and im pretty sure u can set up a auto alarm to warn u if a big object is nearing.

A few items worth keeping for alternative use purposes:
1. Starter Fluid - comes in a spray can, works better than mace, and customs doesn't usually think twice about it.
2. A very obnoxious can of fluorescent spray paint - hot pink is great. Also works better than mace, makes a criminal easy to identify, and customs doesn't usually pay any attention to it.
3. A Bowling Pin - easier to swing than a baseball bat in cramped spaces, equally effective. Usually decorative and doesn't arouse suspicions.
4. A spear gun - though meant for underwater use, they can be used out of water, and don't typically draw too much attention from customs as they are commonly used for spear-fishing. It's a one-shot, and not terribly accurate out of water, but if it's you or them, you always choose you.
double sided small spear gun (you get two shots) will also not attack scrutiny from port authorities. You can always have two "normal" size spear gun!

Most of us see it fit to be able to defend ourselves from them. Also, in the United States, unlike Europe, many of us live in more secluded areas prone to animal attacks from bears, coyotes, etc and also want to be able to defend our families from such cases.

Hey y'all. Enjoy your vids. On the subject of security, I recently read the book about the circumnavigation of Johnathan Slocum. At one of his stops along the way, a knowing soul gave him a bag of nails. If I recall correctly, they were short nails with large heads. Much like roofing nails. When he got the bad vibes feeling, he would scatter them on deck before he retired for the night. Most, if not all potential pirates at that time don't have or wear shoes. This tactic on at least two occasions alerted him and diverted a potentially dangerous encounter.

So why no guns onboard?
It is extremely illegal to carry a gun aboard in most countries around the world to the point of being charged of arms smuggling with penalties including life imprisonment or death by firing squad. As for many of the other arguments, we will highlight a comment by one of our followers:
I’m a policeman, so I personally am very capable/familiar with firearms, the great “guns on boats” debate is frustrating to me. Guns, fire extinguishers, OC spray, cutlasses (not just for pirate costumes anymore), gaffs, fishing rods (a segment of an offshore rod is basically a bull whip) etc are all just tools, not an integrated defensive strategy.
1) If you need a gun to be there, don’t go there for a pleasure trip.
2) Always have an exit plan. Very few manportable weapon are effective beyond a 1000 yards and when fired from a boat at sea, 100 yards. An effective plan should always be to have the least human impact to create mos the distance from the threat. A hole in a pirates hull or outboard is a small thing to explain away, but a hole in a pirates might be hard to explain to his cousin the police chief.
3) boats are legitimately full of sharp or dangerous things that serve non-dangerous purposes in skilled hands.
4) Weapons aren’t warning devices. Most US states have laws against brandishing weapons, I suspect that is true most places. Waving guns is almost the biggest cliche of a dangerous idiot. If you need to warn somebody off, verbal commands, loud noises and bright lights are the way to go. Act and explain your actions based on the safe operation of your vessel. “I observed a vessel approaching on a collision course and sounded a horn, fired flares and illuminated them with a light to warn them.” Any admiralty court is going to agree that hat that was proper. If that doesn’t work, it demonstrates your good faith when you act to defend yourself. If they then attempt to force boarding …
5) Who are you going to call? Help may be days away or corrupt/dangerous. But if you can’t explain it, don’t do it
6) Have a plan, drill the plan, act without hesitation.
7) Stay out of prison

I was thinking about installing a gopro and floodlight up the mast, bow and stern. Set up survellience screen at the nav desk in the cabin. Then you could flood the area around the boat with light when needed. ALSO, ELECTRIFY the boats rails and zap em as they attempt to board. Then, when all else fails, and they are coming for ya, doublebarrel. Done. No more threat.
