Cellars, thats where cheese, meat and alcohol was kept back in the day. Well made clay soil cellar (depending on geographical region of course) could be made into a real fridge with ice blocks broughts from the mountains. Same method is used to this very day in various countries surrounding Kashmir mountains or Andes.
