  • Well, “Billy the Kid” got one of the most short-lived colourful life as an outlaw, which ended when he was only 21, as he got shot in the dark by Garret. However, we also have Cherokee Bill, who was pushed into his death on gallows when he was just 20. Still, he was the Outlaw who got to have the Wittiest Last words even before death. You’re curious, right? So as I. Then, let’s find out the reason at the end of this video. But before that, let's hear the last words of the first outlaw on our list.

    My favorite 'last words of a condemned man' come from a different source than the wild west. It comes from the French Revolution when Thomas De Mahay was to guillotined. Upon reading his death warrant he arrogantly said "I see you have made three spelling mistakes." The guy had cojones.

    Entertaining. If you're not concerned about facts getting in the way. Billy the Kid wasn't killed in "Fort Summer," Tom O'Folliard didn't have trouble joining the Regulators as he and Charlie Bowdrie were 2 of the Kids best friends (the 3 are buried side by side), and the Kid's last words were: "Quien es? Quien es?" Kinda makes you question everything else after that beginning...

    Also some of Sam Bass‘ last words: “If a man knows anything, he ought to die with it in him.”
    “My mother always said that I would die with my shoes on.” - “Big Steve” Long’s last words after having asked to have his shoes removed before he was hanged.

    Not sure why Tom Horn is even mentioned in this story as an outlaw. He was not an outlaw. He actually had quite a background as a U.S. Army scout, lawman, and detective with the Pinkerton Agency. He didn't rob banks and trains. And he never killed a man that didn't need killing.
    And there was that time he assisted in the talks with Geronimo. Tom Horn spoke Apache and was the interpreter during the talks General Crook had with Geronimo, negotiating his surrender. Geronimo requested Horn at the talks, because Horn was the only white man Geronimo could trust to interpret correctly.
    Over 80 years later, in a mock modern-day trial, Tom Horn was acquitted of his charges for lack of evidence.
    He was framed during a botched confession by Joe LeFors. And Walter Stoll, the county prosecutor in the trial, was up for re-election. Who were the real criminals here?

    • @pearlcaster8287
      @pearlcaster8287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Horn was hanged for murder, despite the fact he was"commissioned" as an agent for the local cattlemen's interesta. They had no official authority to hire LEOs. The evidence against Horn was circumstantial but the prosecutor, the court officials, and the jury didn't care.

    • @pearlcaster8287
      @pearlcaster8287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "...never killed a man who didn't need killing...?" A 15 year old boy, shot from s sniper position at his home, needed killing? Tom Horn hung for murder 1. The cattlemen's group who hired him had no authority to hire LEOs and Horn wasn't a law officer. The evidence was circumstancial but fit Horn. His confession would be thrown out of court today, but not in the 19th century in a rural, ranchland.He was hung for murder. His work history had no effect upon a murder 1 trial.

      According to Pat Garrett. But he was trying to sell a book, so he had a story to sell. Factually, there are several lines of evidence that the Kid got away, Garrett shot a servant kid, then Garrett covered up the murder by claiming it was Billy and writing the 'definitive book' on Billy the Kid. FYI, Garrett was a known scoundrel with out of control gambling debt. And the person he shot that night was said to not even vaguely resemble Billy. Still, the reward was collected on Garrett's word alone. No body. No pictures. No collaborating witnesses that could also attest to anything other than the fact that Garrett had killed someone.

    The photo at 10:04 that was labeled Billy the Kid playing crochet, is one of the many images that appeared, which has no prominence, or validity, after the only known tin type of Billy the Kid, sold at an auction, for over two million dollars. At that time, there was a flood of this type of images appeared. The original tin type was owned by a family that knew Billy the Kid, & knew the Kid had paid a quarter to have the image taken. Pat Garrett, who was friends with the Kid, as well as being his executioner used the original image in his biography. The original image of Billy the Kid, which Pat Garrett himself verified, sold for over two million dollars. The last I heard, this unidentified image of two men playing crochet, is for sale for five million dollars. There is no way to ever verify the authenticity of this photo, short of finding the other person in the photo still alive, & having him verify, that was, indeed Billy the Kid. Facial recognition on old photos, where the images are not square on, or too far away to be clear, are ineffective. Does anyone have five million dollars they want to spend on an image that can't be authenticated & should never have been labeled Billy the Kid in this video? I wonder what other history was added, or they took liberty to misrepresent? Hmmmm!!

Also if their is one pic of Billy their can always be another. They can’t prove it was Billy, but like I said can they 100% guarantee it wasn’t? I don’t think so. She was called "Caliminty Jane " because the term 'calaminty" was a n eupheism for sylphilis. True or not, that's the reason for "caliminty" being attached to her.

    Billy the Kid was only ever indicted for four killings. 3 arguably in self defense. That is his total of known killings, although it is possible he could have killed as many as 9 but not likely. Not even close to 21. And he never reached that age. He most likely was murdered by Garrett at 19, but possibly 20 at the most.

    After Rufus Buck was hanged in 1896 a photograph of his mother was found in his cell. On the back, Buck had written a poem:
    I dreamt I was in heaven
    Among the angels fair;
    I’d near seen none so handsome,
    That twine in golden hair.
    They looked so neat and sang so sweet
    And play’d the golden harp.
    I was about to pick an angel out
    And take her to my heart.
    But the moment I began to plea
    I thought of you my love.
    There was none I’d seen so beautiful
    On earth or heaven above.

    This is not even true. Billy the Kid did not kill 21 men and his last words, if it was Billy that Garrett shot, were, “Quien es?” He spoke fluent Spanish and those he was hanging with at the time were all Spanish speakers. Garrett had to ask for confirmation as to who he’d killed because he wasn’t sure. The first two people that saw the body said, “that ain’t Billy.”
    You’re pretty sloppy with your research so I’m stopping there. The rest is probably wrong, too.

Tom Folliard (not "O'Folliard") was not a kid who kid who idolized Billy. He was older than BTK and had grudges against The House in Lincoln County. See the books by Fred Nolan on the Lincoln County War for more extremely well documented information.
